Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Sports

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sports. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sports|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Sports. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.

For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

The holding company is not-notable and fails WP:NCORP. The article is primarily content about the San Antonio Spurs, not the holding company, then a WP:SYNTHed-together reporting of the holding company's portfolio. Longhornsg (talk) 17:18, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Keep - sports teams holding companies often are notable. Doing a before search brings up many hits for the company. Mostly books related to sports management. But I agree, the article should be redone to be less focused on the Spurs. ロドリゲス恭子 (talk) 18:02, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Refbombed promotion for non notable individual. Lacks coverage in independent reliable sources. Many sources but most are by him instead of about him. A little bit of local interest puff but nothing significant. Awards are not major. duffbeerforme (talk) 07:59, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment. I have decided not to make a specific recommendation here. Yet. As, frankly, I wonder if I can leave aside the years of WP:COI and WP:REFBOMB concerns that I've struggled with on this title. And, perhaps, any !vote contribution from me may not be fully objective. However, I have long wondered whether WP:BASIC and WP:JOURNALIST and WP:NACADEMIC are met here. As, IMO, there is limited evidence that the subject has received significant coverage in multiple secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject. The sources (in the article and seemingly those that are available) are almost all either written by the subject (some about himself and others just things he has written generally), or by entities associated with the subject (university bio profiles, Huffington Post profile, news employer bio, etc), or are just trivial passing mentions. The only three sources, of which the subject is a primary topic and which are could be considered somewhat independent, are the three pieces in the local Clare Champion newspaper (from 2013, 2021 & 2022). And, personally, I'd question whether these are fully independent. Or whether these types of "local boy graduates" stories materially contribute to notability. Any more than this "former co-worker wrote autobiography" piece is strictly independent. Anyway. If I was confident that years of COI/REFBOMB/FV annoyance with this title weren't influencing my recommendation, I'd probably lean "delete". But, being perfectly frank and hopefully somewhat self-aware, I'm not convinced would be an entirely objective recommendation (based entirely on NBIO merit).... Guliolopez (talk) 11:37, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete This was a tricky one to try and assess. Ultimately I think notability is not there. There is some coverage but is it significant? I think not. Looking at the academic side, I don't think the research and published works are there yet. The awards are non-notable really and as for the references, most are published own works. It almost feels kind of WP:Auto even if it isn't. Coldupnorth (talk) 19:54, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment: This is a WP:PAID article. Owais Al Qarni has been paid by Anim on behalf of Shafiullah Al Munir.[2] --আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 20:11, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The editor has clearly mentioned this on their talk page, so that resolves part of the issue. The other part is that if someone has paid you to write an article, then as per WP:COI, new articles should go through the Articles for Creation process so they can be reviewed before being published, even if the editor holds NPP or autopatroller rights. That’s the part that remains a concern. Also, we should now focus on whether the subject genuinely meets the criteria for having a Wikipedia page. Charlie (talk) 15:48, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Non notable, fails WP:GNG. Most of the sources are interview masquerading as an article, i.e., directly quoting the subject or typical news i.e "Shafiullah Al Munir appointed Chairman of ...". I don’t see any substantial references. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the references are paid, especially considering the subject paid for this Wikipedia article. --আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 20:23, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment What the author describes as "sources covering him" with respect to various sports organizations, are almost all press releases ("has announced", "issued a notification", "announcement was officially made", a "press release" said, etc.). The few exceptions among the sports-related, such as [3], are not significant coverage of Munir. --Worldbruce (talk) 19:01, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Other sources discuss his failed political bid, divorce, imprisonment and torture, feud with another business magnate, and the collapse of his business. Some or all of that might make him notable, but surprise, surprise, there's no mention of any of it in the biography he paid for. We don't keep whitewashed paid bios that violate WP:NPOV. I would be willing to consider draftify if Owais Al Qarni wants to take another stab at writing a balanced article, and is willing to let it go through the AfC review process instead of just moving it back to mainspace himself. --Worldbruce (talk) 19:06, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - there are several articles that help establish notability such as 1, 2, 3 and 4. If there are issues with content then Draftity is an option.Darkm777 (talk) 18:46, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Umm... Three of those four links are to the same press release. An employer's press release about an appointment does not present an independent view of the appointee. They have every reason make the appointee look good and to promote them. The Dhaka Tribune article is independent, but is not significant coverage. About the most one could squeeze out of it would be two sentences: "Munir was appointed president of the Bangladesh Cycling Federation in May 2018. He resigned, citing ill health, on 2 March 2020". --Worldbruce (talk) 19:22, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The list of championships includes only 13 events, none of which have their own Wikipedia article. This leads me to believe the page may violate notability guidelines. I think it should be merged back into the main article, as it doesn't meet the criteria for a standalone page. However, given the heavy reliance on primary sources, there may be little, if any, content worth merging. Johnson524 06:14, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see how you can ever reach that conclusion. It is a World Championship formally recognised by the IOC recognised sporting body. To add to this it is the "Youth" World Championship on the same equipment as used in the Olympic Games hence a number of high profile sailors. All the content for this has been on wikipedia for a number of years in templates. As per a previously agreed policy with other editors who requested that the events side is not on the same page as the equipment these event pages for each title were created. The title definately meets the sports notability requirement although I doubt individual event do. I will work more on the referencing but even this is much better than the previous 10 years. I would say this page also demostrates the usefullness of wikipedia as the official website for the RS:X disappeared within 18 months of the equipment not being used as Olympic equipment. The event is no longer held. Yachty4000 (talk) 01:27, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There is only one example of WP:SIGCOV of this tech businessperson, this profile in the San Francisco Standard. The rest of the coverage is WP:TRIVIALMENTIONS (e.g. [15], [16], [17]), affiliated sources (e.g. [18]) or WP:PRIMARYSOURCES ([19], [20]). A mother cannot possibly be an independent source on her son, and independent sourcing is required for determining notability. I would ask that participants here refrain from casting WP:ASPERSIONS about personal attacks and actions not in the spirit of Wikipedia and stay focused on the subject's notability. Fails WP:NATHLETE. Ledbetter's professional career in European basketball was unremarkable and does not seem to have yielded coverage in German and Luxembourgish news. The currently listed sources are his entry in the Glenville State College Hall of Fame showering affiliated praise, a user comment from the DC Basketball Blog (not even the blog post itself), minor discussion of his single-game performance in The Glenville Mercury student newspaper, and a YouTube interview from the channel Alumni4life, a local varsity jackets retailer. While I found two other instances of Ledbetter's performance reported in the Glenville Mercury, neither instance bothered to mention his season-wide performance, much less broader commentary on him as an athlete/person. Being twice named to the First All-WVIAC Team is impressive, but for a NCAA Division II conference, that achievement seems below WP:NCOLLATH. ViridianPenguin🐧 (💬) 15:58, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep all. As expected, for Southeastern Conference Women's Basketball Freshman of the Year, I was easily able to find reliable secondary sources referencing each of the first 26 recipients of this award from 1984 through 2009 and added the references to the table here. As was the case with the Big East defensive player of the year, there was a plethora of choices from which I was able to select. You will note that many of the references are not simply published lists from press releases but stories that went beyond routine coverage. Also, coverage in newspapers outside the locality of the award winners was present. This is beyond the standard set by WP:NLIST, since each individual entry does not need to be notable. While I suspect the articles in this bulk nomination lack referencing to demonstrate their notability, it is the referencing that is lacking, not the notability. They deserve tags stating such, but they should not be deleted. There is little doubt that this will be the case for all the articles, which list the winners of major awards in power conferences that receive significant media coverage. The same is true of the recent deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball Defensive Player of the Year, which I discovered too late. There is no doubt in my mind that reliable secondary sources could be found for that as well, and the article should probably be resurrected. Taxman1913 (talk) 10:09, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not totally sure what to do with this one. There is some WP:SIGCOV, but almost all of it is speculative ("this French-Cambodian player might be the next Cambodian national team star" kind of stuff) or focused on the fact that his father is famous in Cambodia. I can hardly find anything about his career—he no longer plays for the Mallorca Academy and has trained with the Cambodia U23s but, for what I can gather, never actually played. He might play professionally in Cambodia now, but it's a bit unclear. I think this is a WP:TOOSOON, and this article should be draftified. If the AfD decides it should stay as is, fine, but I think this player is wholly unproven and only episodically notable. Also, at the very, very least, the article should be moved to "Loïc Chan". Fails to meet Wikipedia notability criteria. There is some very limited media coverage of McIlvogue's 2-year involvement with Livingston F.C. as a shareholder, but nothing remotely substantive enough to justify a biography - we'd need a lot more about his life in general, and/or more coverage of what his activities as a shareholder entailed. Note that even our Livingston F.C. article only mentions McIlvogue once in passing. Owning shares in something notable doesn't make the shareholder notable. • Very weak keep He didn't play his entire career in the lower leagues, in fact he played a good number of games in the second tier. (However Serbian First League is not a fully pro league like it says it is, in fact that league is semi-pro. Which also counts against some notability in my opinion.) I had a look at both articles and a lot of the citations between the two wiki's. I am somewhat confused about the, on loan for five seasons? I thought I read he was on loan for only two and then signed. There are a number of oddities with his career and the sources. Saying all this, with the amount of citations, they are pretty routine and some are really not acceptable in my opinion. However there is a build of them, and that builds up the story, along with it's oddities. I could have easily just said delete however my keep is very weak. Literally nothing even approaching non-trivial coverage, let alone GNG. The Serbian page is cobbled together from passing mentions and non-independent accounts from his own clubs. I would estimate there are no more than 15 non-quote/interview-based, prose sentences on him across all 25 sources that aren't from the federation/club, and that's even including the ineligible primary match recaps like

Except for before the break, when goalkeeper Trnić and Benjamin collided while chasing the ball, there was no excitement before the goals, which confirmed what the table shows – the inefficiency of both teams.

As soon as the second half started, the guests were left with a player less, the referee showed a red card to goalkeeper Trnić.

Then Admir Kecap entered the scene, who on three occasions had more than a reasonable chance, but Trnić managed to prevent the advantage of the home team.

    and routine transactional reports like

Trnić, who is 18 years old, spent the previous season in Partizan's branch Teleoptik.

there is also the youngster Jovan Trnić who is gaining experience in Teleoptik.

the contracts are for three years, and were signed by goalkeepers Jovan Trnić (1996) and Đorđe Vukanić (2000), as well as striker Nikola Nović (2000).

    1. @JoelleJay: "Let alone GNG" ? What do you mean? All articles must meet that guideline.
    2. @SportingFlyer: Please follow WP:CIVIL and refrain from using swear words. You could said you agree with source analysis that none of the references provided contain significant coverage, but don't start WP:JUSTNOTABLE argument.
    ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. Djalim ໒꒱˚。⋆ 15:20, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not making a WP:JUSTNOTABLE argument. Sources like this and this are normal coverage in Serbia - there's not a lot of feature stories about players, we have coverage detailing his entire career, he made almost 100 appearances and would be expected to be found in an encyclopedia of notable Serbian football players. The GNG requirement came about for sportspeople who had nothing written about them except for database entries. That is not the case at all for Trnić, who received media coverage pretty much every single time his team played, and there is absolutely no shortage of mentions or coverage of him. The only thing we are missing is what I call an "American-style feature article" like the ones small towns write about their otherwise entirely non-notable minor league baseball players, which is what Wikipedia seems to require now instead of common sense. SportingFlyer T·C 15:47, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
So we're supposed to exempt second-tier Serbian footballers from our global consensus requiring GNG and citation to a source of significant coverage because you agree Serbian newspapers don't give them significant coverage...? You linked to two routine transactional reports that are ubiquitous and typical for footballers anywhere in the world, that doesn't make that the normal extent of coverage for notable Serbian footballers, but if it is, that would just mean these subjects are not actually notable to wiki standards. We deprecated NFOOTY precisely because too often appearances in a given league did not correspond to GNG (and it sounds like his 37 second-tier apps wouldn't have even counted toward NFOOTY as it's not actually fully-professional).
Mentions in primary match reports do not count toward GNG or even BASIC, nor does the routine coverage of transactions that often comes directly from press releases. Building an article around those sources would violate our policies on PRIMARY and NPOV. JoelleJay (talk) 18:15, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You should interpret that sentence as "there isn't even one single secondary independent source providing more than passing mentions, let alone the multiple such sources required for GNG".
    I disagree with policing SF's swearing. JoelleJay (talk) 18:21, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Draftify. ESPN.nl is hardly an independent source, given their extensive contract and mixed finances with Eredivisie Media & Marketing and direct collaboration with the Eredivisie clubs. Eredivisie Media & Marketing CV was established by the Eredivisie clubs in 2008 to exploit their collective media and sponsorship rights. The company's first major achievement was the launch of the television channel Eredivisie Live, the first owned television channel by clubs in Europe. In 2012, FOX International Channels acquired a majority stake in EMM, and Eredivisie Live was renamed FOX Sports a year later. In 2019, The Walt Disney Company acquired the majority share. Since January 1, 2021, the television channel has been known as ESPN. With just the AD source I think it's reasonable to draftify until further coverage becomes available. Alexei Cherepanov Award (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)

In addition to being uncited, doing a brief search online produces no sources indicating WP:GNG, or secondary sources specifically covering the award outside of passing mentions. My search using the Russian name for the award "Премия Алексея Черепанова" only produced sources talking about players winning the award 1 or players arguing they should have won the award 2, both of which focus more on the players in question and neither about award itself. For these reasons, I unfortunately believe the article does not pass notability guidelines. Johnson524 03:42, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have added references for as many wins as I could, and tried to attribute them to a variety of primary and secondary sources (noting: the entirety of the list does not need to be documented in sources for notability, only that the grouping or set in general has been). I originally was following the general format for Ice Hockey awards as published at Calder Memorial Trophy, CHL Rookie of the Year, Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award, Emms Family Award, Jarmo Wasama Memorial Trophy, Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy, SHL Rookie of the Year, Sidney Crosby Trophy, etc., which did not include individual references for each win. I am also unsure of what sort of documentation beyond that you would like. Especially when factoring in a Western bias, you are not going to find numerous articles talking about the award itself – but that's the same with all of the other rookie awards listed above; you instead find articles talking about the players who won the award. The KHL is a top global ice hockey league and Rookie of the Year is one of the top, annual awards. I am just struggling to see how it differs from other leagues' awards, or even other awards from the KHL such as the Faith Towards Hockey Award. And I am not trying to invoke WP:PRECEDENT as we try to not let that dictate future decisions, but would it not fall under a standing WP:CON consensus?:–uncleben85 (talk) 13:35, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • The added sources did not change my opinion. Passing mentions of players winning an award do not contribute to GNG for the award. Neither do primary sources from the league, nor listings sports databases. It is best to merge this into the league. Flibirigit (talk) 15:50, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It wasn't rhetorical. It was a genuine ponderance! But agreed, it is outside of the scope of this AfD. My overall point is I made this article to the standards I knew from seeing similar articles. I have since tried to approve on that.–uncleben85 (talk) 19:56, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sports awards articles in general are very poorly written. Flibirigit (talk) 20:48, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Uncleben85: I was only looking to see if this article in particular met WP:GNG notability standards as part of the page review process. I suppose I could conduct a deep search into all the articles linked above as well, but I'm more of an inclusionst by nature, and try not to go on large deleting sprees if I can help it. That being said, if you or any other editors would like to argue for their inclusion or deletion from the encyclopedia I'll participate in the discussion. Johnson524 18:29, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Keep... While obviously not a great deal going on with this particular article, the basis of failed WP:NHOCKEY has got my attention and raises questions! Initial notability was gained under the stipulation of at least 200 regular season games at the 'second tier' levels. This 200 games played has been the common practice and basis for a considerable number of ice hockey articles. There is no significant coverage of this player that I found when doing a WP:BEFORE search. He still doesn't pass GNG. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 19:59, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Delete Not finding much significant coverage of the player in reliable sources. Significant coverage is only in a hockey blog. There is certainly difficulty in searching Hungarian sources, but thus far my search has been unsuccessful.
Here is a quick assessment of the sources in the article (note: I am relying on google translate for these). Not sure if this will change your mind @Flibirigit:
1,4,8,10,11,12 are from a hockey blog and are not reliable
2: About national team, not player. Reisz only mentioned in roster list.
3: Only appears in roster list
5: Routine game coverage mentioning Reisz goal
6: Routine game coverage that mentions Reisz
7: Page not found
9: Behind paywall; most likely source for establishing notability
13: Only appears in roster list
Given there is only one potentially reliable, in-depth source this article should be deleted as it doesn't meet WP:GNG or WP:ANYBIO. Anonrfjwhuikdzz (talk) 02:20, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Non notable kickboxer. This article initially appears notable but when you look deeper it doesn't meet WP:NKICK, WP:SPORTBASIC, WP:GNG (all sources are non-independent, no significant coverage). It also has a lot of promotional aspects such as: the name of his private non-notable company, the name of his children: "They have three children together: Sidney, Saryna, and Sterling", the entire sections "Early life", "Corporate career", "Personal life", passage like "conditioned and rehabilitated himself through hot yoga"? and majority of the "championships" entries are completely unsourced which indicates close connection with the subject, potential COI? The article looks likes a vanity page to promote the subject's business interests and self-published non-notable books. This article is as vanity and promotional as it gets.

In addition, the subject's main claim to fame, his victories in WKA, WKU or WAKO, dont't pass WP:NKICK guidelines. The subject has never fought outside of these amateur competitions in "Point Fighting" or "light contact Kick Boxing", and has never fought professional kickboxing (unlike Dragan Jovanović (kickboxer) for example who went on to fight Pro). According to WP:NKICK: Kickboxers who have an amateur background exclusively are not notable under this guideline unless they have been the subject examined in detail (more than a single paragraph) in several reliable third-party sources (at least four), excluding local publications. The subject has only been covered in local publications such as the subject's home city of Ottawa: inside ottawa valley.com. Which is filled with a total of 20+ spacing mistakes. Lekkha Moun (talk) 19:44, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment NKICK seems a tad strict. It wants "at least four" pieces of SIGCOV, excluding local? That's a higher bar than GNG.
~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 20:46, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I personally think the Kickboxing guidelines for amateur kickboxing athletes are extremely appropriate, because it should require a lot in order to be notable as an amateur. There are so many non-notable martial arts competitions out there where you can become a "world champion" with only a few participants per category, that's why quality SIGCOV has been requested. As for pro fighters, the guidelines are very flexible: "ranked in the world top-10". I would actually change it to Top 5. So if GNG is easier to pass, the subject should have an easier time passing GNG, but unfortunately doesn't. Lekkha Moun (talk) 08:50, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

As nicely as possible, I think this article is full of it. The sources are indeed real pages but when trying to check any of the claims in them they all lead in a circular manner back to pages controlled by the senkoukai. All of the supposed masters that he trained under are not pulling up any search results, even when I search for their names in Japanese. The same happens when I search for the organizations that recognized this particular style like International Bujutsu Karate Association. I will be honest that I can't read any of the sources that are not in English but what I have (not) seen in English and Japanese makes me doubt. Moritoriko (talk) 07:30, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The article on Senkoukai Karate is based on verifiable and reliable sources, many of which are from established news outlets. The subject has received significant coverage in independent publications, which supports its notability as per Wikipedia guidelines.
Here are some of the sources that confirm the authenticity and notability of Senkoukai Karate:
    - Telangana Today: “Hyderabad-based martial artist develops India's first independent karate style, Senkoukai Karate gains global recognition.”
    - Asian Community News: “Hanshi Shaswat Kumar becomes first Indian to earn 10th Dan black belt from Japan.”
    - Sakshi Epaper (multiple editions): Coverage of kata demonstrations, global recognition, and Indian leadership in martial arts.
    - Namasthe Telangana (NT News): Reported on global recognition of Senkoukai Karate.
    - IBKA Japan: Recognition of Senkoukai Karate is documented.
These articles are archived and available for verification.
The content has been written with neutrality and in accordance with Wikipedia’s content policies. I am open to improving the article further if required, but kindly consider retaining the page, as the subject is notable and reliably documented.

Thank you for your observations and concerns. I genuinely appreciate your interest in verifying the information. I would like to respectfully clarify a few important points and request that the article not be deleted, as it is based on verifiable facts and can be improved further as per Wikipedia’s standards.
1. Regarding the International Bujutsu Karate Association (IBKA):
While their official website is currently not active, the organization is legitimate and recognized in Japan. Here are their official contact details for verification:
Address: 064-0821 Kita 1-jo Nishi 22-3-18, Chuo-ku, Sapporo, MDC Omotesando Building, 2nd Floor
Tel: 011-215-9880
Handy: 090-9430-7668
Fax: 011-522-6960
Additionally, in this YouTube video, their official banner is clearly visible in the background:
Anyone is welcome to reach out to them directly to confirm their recognition of Senkoukai Karate.
2. Regarding the Japanese masters and recognition:
One of the senior Japanese masters is Hanshi Masaki Watanabe, Chairman of the World Executive Committee for Senkoukai Karate. While not all senior Japanese instructors have personal websites, you can verify Masaki Watanabe’s presence through these official platforms:
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/masaki.watanabe.karate
YouTube Shorts: Video 1, Video 2
He is also present on Facebook and other social platforms.
3. Regional language media coverage:
Multiple Indian news outlets such as Sakshi, Namasthe Telangana, Telangana Today, and Asian Community News have independently reported on Senkoukai Karate’s formation, recognition, and growth. If needed, I can help provide English translations or summaries of these non-English sources.
In conclusion, I respectfully request that this page not be deleted. The subject is notable, covered in reliable sources, and supported by international recognition. I remain fully committed to improving the article’s neutrality, citations, and structure as per Wikipedia guidelines.
Thank you again for your thoughtful consideration. MartialArtsStyles (talk) 00:59, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
1. I never doubted that the organization exists and it is indeed recognized as a corporation, I can't find anything about it being recognized as anything other than a local practice place in Sapporo.
2. Again, I don't doubt that he is a real person, just his qualifications to declare something notable.
3. To determine notability for Wikipedia it is important to have non-interview articles, and because you are a CoI editor unfortunately the burden of proof is even higher.
In America it is relatively easy to found a school of some branch of martial arts and then contact any one of several organizations to "certify" it as a real thing but that doesn't make it notable. Moritoriko (talk) 07:16, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I completely agree with user Moritoriko, I have also been trying for the past month to review their references, claims and citations since the Senkoukai instructor started vandalising a bunch of different martial arts pages such as 100-man kumite, Comparison of karate styles, and Full contact karate (You can see this in the revision history). Everything returns back to Senkoukai managed pages when checking, also the newspaper articles they keep adding could very easily just be paid promotional article coverage which they all seem to be written by Shashwat Kumar or someone linked to him.
I agree that this article should be deleted as soon as possible, also if you go on the Facebook page for World Senkoukai Karate Organisation he is even using the Wikipedia article for Senkoukai for advertising.
Below pulled from his Facebook.

Following my above comment I would like to vote Delete for the Senkoukai article. NottinghamNinja (talk) 01:40, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to respectfully respond to the concerns raised above.
With due regard to the contributors, I believe we must maintain the principle that Wikipedia articles are judged based on their content and references, not on assumptions about the intentions or identities of the editors.
If tomorrow, someone creates a page about any lesser-known but verifiable organization and provides references — and those references meet the basic notability and verifiability criteria — should the article be deleted just because the editor may be linked to the organization? That would be a slippery slope and would set a problematic precedent.
In this case:
If there are references from independent media sources, even if small, they should be evaluated on their reliability and independence, not presumed to be "paid" without concrete proof.
If any editor has added inappropriate promotion across unrelated articles, that specific behavior should be handled through page protection or user warnings/blocks — not by punishing the subject of the article itself.
The organization or its founder should not be penalized simply because someone else (even if affiliated) has referenced the Wikipedia page on social media. Wikipedia is a public platform — anyone can quote it, but that doesn’t make the article itself promotional.
If there are genuinely verifiable, third-party sources that establish the organization's notability — even in regional or martial arts contexts — the article deserves improvement, not deletion.
Let's please focus on the quality of the sources and content, not on assumptions or personal affiliations. If specific references are not meeting standards, we can replace or tag them — deletion should be a last resort, not a first response.
Thank you. MartialArtsStyles (talk) 07:10, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to clarify an important point — deleting a Wikipedia article solely on the suspicion that the news coverage might be "paid" is not appropriate and goes against the principles of neutrality and verifiability that Wikipedia stands for.
If the news sources used in the article are registered media outlets, regularly publish content, and follow even basic journalistic standards, then they should be treated as reliable sources unless there is solid proof to the contrary.
Even if someone has doubts, they are always free to contact the news organization directly to verify the nature of the coverage. But until such confirmation is obtained, removing the article based on speculation is unfair and sets a problematic precedent.
Wikipedia’s policy is clear — if the content is verifiable and backed by independent, reliable sources, it should be considered acceptable regardless of how well-known the subject is.
Therefore, I respectfully request that this discussion stay focused on the quality of the sources rather than unverified assumptions. If any source is genuinely unreliable, we can replace it. But deletion should be a last resort, not the first step.
Thank you. MartialArtsStyles (talk) 07:17, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Dear NottinghamNinja,
With due respect, I would like to say that mistakes are a part of being human, and mistakes can — and should — be corrected through constructive collaboration, not through deletion.
Let me share a specific example:
You once changed the meaning of Senkoukai Kata on the article, but unfortunately, that edit was factually incorrect. The name "Senkoukai Kata" was actually proposed by Takayuki Asami, a Japanese Karate Master, as part of the Senkoukai system.
So when such a change is made in good faith, but turns out to be inaccurate — should the entire article be deleted because of it? Or should it be corrected?
Surely, we agree that it would not be fair for one person’s unintentional mistake to lead to punishment for someone else’s work, or for an entire tradition to be erased.
My sincere request is:
Please do not recommend deletion of the Senkoukai article. Instead, let's work together to improve it — by correcting content, adding reliable sources, and removing anything promotional if needed.
This is how Wikipedia grows — not by removing emerging knowledge, but by refining it.
Thank you for your understanding. MartialArtsStyles (talk) 07:29, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Wikipedia Team,
I sincerely wish to say that I am facing difficulty in writing in the proper style and language required for Wikipedia. Because of this, there are some issues in my article.
I kindly request your help in improving my draft. I promise to follow all Wikipedia rules and provide only verified and truthful information, with references from reliable newspapers and sources.
Please guide me through this process.
Thank you 🙏 MartialArtsStyles (talk) 07:39, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't matter about any other page, that is called "whatabout-ism".
The presumption of "paid" that Mr. Ninja is referring to is because of the tone and content of the article, and possibly the unfortunate tendency to find articles like that in other similar publications.
And there is precedent for the subject of articles being blocked in some way due to persistent abuse of adding things that are not notable to Wikipedia.
Now, going through the sources that you have claimed show notability:
1. epaper.kothaswaram: The about us page on the website is blank, the contact us page just shows 1 guy's name, there is no indication this is a fact checked paper with editorial oversight, the kinds of things needed to show that a source is trusted.
2. Asian Community News: The article is credited to "ACN correspondent" which is usually not a good sign when evaluating sources. This organization looks much better than the first one though. I can actually read this one and the tone is a bit heavy handed which is part of why it appears suspect.
3. Telenaga Today: Now this is actually a decent looking source but it is an interview so it doesn't contribute to notability.
4. same as 3. Like actually the same article as 3, I don't know why it is used instead of 3.
5. Very similar to 1. I am not seeing indications it is a reliable source.
6. same as 5, neither of these are very long so even with being reliable I don't think they are in-depth.
7. Similar problems to above sources, there isn't an author listed and other things lacking to show reliability as a source.
8. The same article as 7. I may not be able to read this but I can still pattern match. It says the same thing.
9. The exact same article as 6. Are you just puffing up the number of sources? And this source doesn't include the names for the kata which it is being used as a source for.
Now that I have spent the time going through all of these sources, the onus is now on you to show how I might be wrong or to show other sources that are reliable and demonstrate the notability of this organization. Moritoriko (talk) 07:54, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Moritoriko,
Thank you for taking the time to go through the sources in such detail and for sharing your analysis so thoroughly. I genuinely appreciate your commitment to upholding Wikipedia’s reliability and quality standards — your effort reflects a deep respect for the platform’s integrity.
Your comments have helped me better understand the areas where the current sources may fall short, especially regarding editorial oversight, named authorship, article tone, and duplication of content. I acknowledge that some of the sources, particularly [1], [5], and [6], may not meet the threshold of WP:RS.
In terms of WP:NOTABILITY, my intention is to establish it through independent, in-depth, and secondary sources that genuinely reflect the organization’s standing and impact. While interviews like the one in Telangana Today may not directly establish notability, I included them as part of a broader context to show media interest — though I understand this alone is insufficient.
Based on your feedback, I will revisit the list and work towards gathering more robust, well-established sources — preferably from recognized publications with editorial standards and independent analysis.
If you happen to know of any direction or standards that might help identify such sources better, I’d truly appreciate your guidance. My intent here is not promotional in any way — only to ensure that if the subject is truly notable, it is represented fairly and within policy on Wikipedia.
Thank you again for your thoughtful feedback. It’s genuinely helpful and very much appreciated.
With respect,
User:MartialArtsStyles MartialArtsStyles (talk) 08:22, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello respected editors,
I humbly request that the Senkoukai page not be deleted at this time.
I fully respect Wikipedia’s notability, verifiability, and reliable sourcing policies (WP:N, WP:V, WP:RS). I understand that the current references may not have fully met those standards. However, I am actively working on collecting stronger and more reputable sources, including well-known national newspapers like The Times of India, The Hindu, and other independent, fact-checked publications.
These upcoming sources will offer in-depth, third-party coverage of Senkoukai’s history, activities, and recognition, which I believe will help establish the subject’s encyclopedic notability.
All I respectfully ask is a little more time to improve the article and bring it into full compliance with Wikipedia’s content guidelines. I have no intention of promotional editing—my only goal is to ensure that if the subject is truly notable, it is represented fairly, neutrally, and policy-compliantly.
Please consider pausing the deletion temporarily so I can make the necessary improvements. I am fully open to guidance and collaboration with fellow editors to meet the required standards.
Thank you very much for your time and understanding.
Respectfully,
User:MartialArtsStyles MartialArtsStyles (talk) 08:36, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
In terms of Senkoukai being its own style of martial art I think it is too in its infancy and not notable enough yet to warrant its own article. It doesn't appear to have multiple clubs training in it.
From what I have seen it just looks like basic Shotokan, I haven't seen any of the 10 unique Kata's either, the person who runs it is a self promoted 10th Dan and appears to be only in his early 30's.
I don't believe this warrants it's own article as of yet, maybe later down the line in about 15 years if it grows to be a common style, but not yet, it seems only to be set up for promotional purposes. NottinghamNinja (talk) 10:17, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Also the fact that they have linked the wikipedia page on Facebook is a major red flag which should push towards deletion of the article.
There are styles I am aware of which are far larger that don't have their own articles yet, such as Go-Kan-Ryu style which was founded in 1984, that style is commonly referred to as a fraudulent school within the martial arts community and I would also agree, but the size of it is huge and practiced heavily in Australia, the UK, across Europe and in the USA yet they do not have an article.
Another style I am aware of is Tetsudo, that doesn't have an article but is its own style respectively even with a unique uniform. NottinghamNinja (talk) 16:09, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, SNG can be changed at any time by consensus. A few years ago sports notability criteria were significantly changed when participation criteria were removed. In fact, some sports were removed completely from WP:NSPORT. Papaursa (talk) 16:39, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Rickyc123: You can't just delete an article because the parameters have now changed for Notability. – This is actually a very common thing. Notability guidelines are often updated for a reason, and if an article doesn't meet whatever new guidelines are established (or GNG if the SNG is removed), then it's perfectly reasonable to nominate an article for deletion. Regional-level NASCAR driver with no championship wins. Fails to meet WP:NMOTORSPORT or WP:WikiProject NASCAR/Standards. Citations are database entries and an obit. Nothing better found on search. — Moriwen (talk) 19:12, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Am I seeing the same as you? All I see is that the keywords Jerry + Bowers yield 10,707 matches when restricted to Idaho newspapers. The same keywords, incidentally, yield 1,860,588 hits across the whole collection, of which 12,678 are in England. Unsurprising since there are many people named Bowers who will be mentioned in articles also mentioning people named Jerry in English language newspapers, but why would we think any of those are about this person? If all we have is a search tally then we have no sources yet. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 07:10, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

OK, so which of these are not just news reports but secondary sources? And all I see when doing that, is the Idaho Statemsan, which would count as one source if any of these are secondary. Again, we need to go on more than a search results list. Could we find a few sources showing more than one newspaper, and more than straight news reports? Thanks.

Thanks for these. The first of these significantly covers him, in an article occasioned by his climb towards a national NASCAR circuit placement. By the third article, written 2 years later, his dreams, it seems, have become a reality. Now these are all in one paper, the Idaho Statesman, and primarily written by the same correspondent: Ray Giffin. The Idaho Statesman is the daily newspaper of Boise, Idaho. We are told he went to school in Meridian Idaho, which is an adjacent conurbation to Boise, so the greater Boise area. This is local interest coverage, although it is significant.
GNG requires significant coverage in multiple independent reliable and secondary sources. Multiple articles in a single source like this will count as a single source for GNG. This is especially relevant when the source is of a local nature. So - is there anything else? Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 22:09, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Subject does not quite pass WP:SPORTCRIT and a cursory search did not yield anything useful. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 16:41, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thfeeder (talk) 04:56, 17 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Thfeeder I’m sorry, but your !vote is baseless in terms of policy as it applies to notability, which is what I am questioning in the first place. You’re telling me I do not have competence in Japanese but you’re not bringing any source to justify your stance. If you are competent, please bring the sources and let us evaluate, that is what AfD is about, not to caste aspersions indirectly. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 05:56, 17 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Draftify - I am going to mostly agree with HumanBodyPiloter5 here. It may well be borderline, but we are not at GNG on the sourcing presented so far. The reports that he will participate in FIA is routine announcements of the kind that every racer will get. These are not independent of the subject, because the announcement is not independent, regardless of who repeats it. It is technically primary news reporting, and also excluded on that basis. This can't be used to demonstrate notability on its own. If we accepted this then all F4 drivers would be automatically notable, and there is no consensus for that. So what we need are sources that independently cover the subject. It may also be WP:TOOSOON in that he is much more likely to be notable should he win races. Is there a suitable redirect target? If there is no suitable redirect, then I would suggest we draftify this new page (and this is my !vote for now). We have no evidence of notability, but we have at least the possibility that a deep search in Japanese searches will yield more, and also that he may do well and thus see more coverage. Equally, a very real possibility there are no better sources right now. But if the page creator of this new page can find sources, they could submit through AFC when they have been found. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 08:30, 17 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Draftify Seems new to the game and has not received significant coverage. May indeed be WP:TOOSOON. Ramos1990 (talk) 05:00, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Relisting comment: For the record, there's no ban on nominating subjects where there might be sourcing in a language you don't read, and no obligation to do a full, in-depth search before nominating an article for deletion. Please focus on the sources, thank you.

Relisting comment: There is an epidemic of Relisting going on at AFD these days do to widely different arguments being put forward and a general decline in numbers of editors participating in deletion discussions but I'm going to relist here because otherwise I see No Consensus and I don't think that result would make anyone satisfied especially editors who are voicing support for draftification. A source analysis can be helpful to get a discussion back on track after several weeks.

  • Comment - Source assessment by Sirfurboy - per the relist comment, here is my analysis of the sources we have. Reading the sources deeply, and especially the first two, I believe there may be reason to expect race wins will follow, and thus more publicity, and thus draftification may be in order. I note the merge suggestion by DCsansei, but think that merge there would put undue information on that page. However a redirect to there, preserving this page history in a redirect that can be overwritten should he become notable, is a perfectly good WP:ATD.
  1. Motorsport - An article about the page subject profiling him and occasioned by the announcement that he will participate in the French F4. Now this is routine coverage of any new driver. They will gain a profile, put out by the team, and published in the appropriate press, when a new driver starts. It stands to reason that they will do this as part of their publicity, but this would only demonstrate notability if, in fact, all drivers are notable. They are not, and that is a consensus view. So what is wrong with the specific source? It is news (primary) and it is publicity put out by the team, so not independent. Red XN
  2. Autosport - News report that he won the racing school Suzuka scholarship. This demonstrates he shows promise, but it is not itself any kind of major race win. Rather it shows that he will get a place as a driver. Where it does not meet GNG is that this is a primary source: it is news reporting of his gaining a scholarship. WP:PRIMARYNEWS has guidance. People are not notable simply for gaining scholarships. Red XN
  3. Chunichi Shimbun - A passing mention. No SIGCOV. Red XN
  4. Jsports - This is an interview, and interviews are not independent and are primary. WP:IV has guidance. The occasion of an interview can be indicative, however. Thus, looking at this one, why is he interviewed? The piece says he aims to be a champion in the full race for the first time in two years this season. It is an interview of a hopeful. We could only accept this as in any way indicative of notability if all drivers are automatically notable. Red XN
Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 08:28, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for taking time to look at the sources yourself. I, of course, support draftifying the article and redirecting the title as suggested as that makes sense. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 10:05, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: Draft would not be my choice, given the source analysis above and what I couldn't find... No strong objection if it does go that way. There might be Japanese sources that come up. Oaktree b (talk) 13:12, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Imdeadinside12 Negative. I said it would be a better option to make a seperate article than continue The Undisputed Era one as tha would be original resarch. Lemonademan22 (talk) 19:40, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Imdeadinside12 I do not know. I didn't nominate the article for deletion. You would have to ask the nominator that question. Lemonademan22 (talk) 22:14, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
like Lemonademan22 said i think it would be best to keep it a seperate article than continue the UE one since that would be original research but we can easily merge this with the UE when a reliable source says otherwise. Imdeadinside12 (talk) 01:39, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Short-lived faction with little to no significance. Members no longer affiliated according to AEW roster website and probably would not be brought back. BinaryBrainBug (talk) 22:24, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There are shorter articles with less significance. This faction technically has not even disbanded, two of the "former" members are wrestling on the same team in a match tonight. All of the former members (except one who works full time in Japan) are still active in AEW. This article shouldn't be anywhere near deletion. SwitchMIX (talk) 22:33, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
