This is the talk page for Miniapolis (who is proud to be a Wikipedia editor) and is in fond memory of Corinne, one of WP's very best copyeditors. Although I can be reached by email, I prefer keeping discussions on-wiki as much as possible. Due to time constraints, I no longer accept direct copyedit requests; please list articles requiring copyediting for GAN, FAC and the like on the Guild of Copy Editors request page (and consider pitching in with the GOCE, which can always use more help!) Since I take the occasional wikibreak, feel free to undo any administrative action I've taken as you see fit.

inline skates

[edit]

Thanks for leaving a copy-edit template on inline skates. But it's not clear what you think needs immediate attention. Perhaps you have not looked at the history page of this article. I've been rewriting this article for months almost everyday. There is plenty left to fix. Namely everything below the "diameter and profile" subsection. I am going to remove that copy-edit template for now. I invite you to post your ideas on the Talk page to get started helping with this rewrite. See my frequent updates on the Talk page as well. You'll find the plan for eventual splitting when done. Cheers. Fred Hsu (talk) 01:15, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Fred Hsu. I tagged the page as one of many with typos which were listed on Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Database Report. If the specific issues ("soulplates", "soulplates", "soulplate", "shell.A", "soulplate", "soulplate", "soulplate", "soulplate", "soulplates"; I presume that "soulplate" should be "soleplate") aren't corrected, the page will just show up again on next month's report. {{Copy edit}} isn't a badge of shame :-). Thanks for your help and all the best, Miniapolis 01:46, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. I see. "soulplate" is in fact correct. It was derived from "sole plate". But the extreme skating folks liked the word "soul". Let me look into how to make this not get flagged again. This made-up word is cited. But I need to figure out how to get this into the lexicon that the report uses. Thanks! Fred Hsu (talk) 01:52, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry about it; I'll inform Beland (who compiles the report) that soulplate is a technical term, and "shell.A" has apparently been fixed with the addition of a space. All the best, Miniapolis 01:57, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I now understand why Beland made this edit a few day ago. They created a redirect page for "soulplate", and wikilinked an occurrence of "soulplate" from the Inline Skates article this way, to Aggressive inline skating#Hardware. Will this make the report ignore this word next time? Thanks again. Fred Hsu (talk) 02:01, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Beland just wikilinked the term and will probably create an exception for it on moss so it doesn't get flagged. All the best, Miniapolis 02:08, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's correct; moss derives its lexicon from the list of Wikipedia articles (including redirects) and Wiktionary entries. This should also help anyone trying to figure out what this word means. -- Beland (talk) 03:41, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Dark mode problems

[edit]

FYI, when replying to the above discussion, the reply box had black text on dark grey background, which made it very hard to see what I was typing. This is because I use Wikipedia in dark mode, and this page sets a dark background color regardless of mode. Suggestions for fixes are made at m:Recommendations for night mode compatibility on Wikimedia wikis. -- Beland (talk) 03:44, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I couldn't find that page, Beland, and I edit the source code; there's no reply box. Do you use Visual Editor? Good luck and all the best, Miniapolis 20:36, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Were you having trouble finding [1]?
I do not use the visual editor, but I do click the "Reply" button. -- Beland (talk) 20:46, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, sorry, I should have used mw: not m:, as in mw:Recommendations for night mode compatibility on Wikimedia wikis. Depending on what you are trying to achieve, the problem might be solved with something like "color:var(--color-emphasized); background:(--background-color-neutral-subtle);" in the CSS of the main div, instead of the hard-coded values. There's a full selection of mode-dependent colors at [2]. -- Beland (talk) 20:58, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I finally found the page, and didn't know (still don't) that I had a problem. My skin is Legacy Vector (2010), and I don't have a "Reply" button; I have an "edit" link next to each section header, which I click to reply – it takes me to the edit window. You're the first person who's mentioned a problem, but I may have to tweak the CSS for this page. Thanks and all the best, Miniapolis 22:44, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I use the current default skin, Vector 2022. Dark mode is definitely in use by only a minority at the moment, as it's still in Beta and has to be explicitly opted into even if one's operating system or web browser is already set to dark mode. I'm taking the opportunity to fix or at least notify authors about every dark mode problem I see so that when it comes out of beta and more people start using it by default, there won't be a lot of broken functionality and a flood of complaints. 8) Anyway, thanks for looking into this! -- Beland (talk) 22:55, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I changed it to what you suggested ("color:var(--color-emphasized); background:(--background-color-neutral-subtle);"), and it's fine. Thanks for making me learn something new! All the best, Miniapolis 23:31, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hurray, that's much better! Thanks again! -- Beland (talk) 23:43, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Eurovision Song Contest 1984

[edit]

Would you mind explaining why you believe Eurovision Song Contest 1984 is in need of a copy-edit? I have worked hard on this article to bring it up to GA status, and is currently pending review, and personally I do not believe adding the copy-edit tag is justified here. Of course I'm open to feedback, and if you see any particular issues with the article please let me know. However for now I have removed the copy-edit tag, as I do not want anything to jeapordise the GA review, which could start at any minute, and any clean-up tags could lead to a quick fail. Sims2aholic8 (talk) 08:48, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sims2aholic8, the page was flagged by moss as containing several typos which should be easy to fix; some GA reviewers are fussier than others. Miniapolis 20:32, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks for that. Appreciate the candour, I will look into this and it should be an easy fix. :) Sims2aholic8 (talk) 21:56, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Keatley Creek Archaeological Site

[edit]

I chose this article as my first 'major edit' for the GOCE, and firstly think I need to ask you to delete Keatley Creek archaeological site and move my edit there. I was wary of getting into an edit war about this but believe my prospective opponent is no longer active! Thanks. AndrewTeal (talk) 06:10, 14 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help, but you marked a major edit (removal of content) as minor. We don't delete entire articles and replace them with edits. I don't know who your "prospective opponent" is from the page history, but this is a collaborative project and we don't have "opponents". You changed the number of pit houses; although you don't have to cite that in the lead, you need to do so when the change appears in the body. Everything in the lead has to be in the body.
