Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Italy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Italy. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Italy|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Italy. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Europe.

Declined PROD; GNG Fail. Google Searches turn up nothing, and the only two mentions I was able to find of him in the archives of L'Unita (whose archives are free) are in passing or as an effective statistic. TadejM says it is notable but with only one cite on the Italian article I am not sure Chidgk1 (talk) 15:54, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep. Istria has a sizable Italian population. These names are used in the areas with the Italian minority and are commonly mentioned in their media. The Italian Wikipedia provides several citations for them. --TadejM my talk 18:05, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep – Italian Wikipedia has more than one citation. I think you may have missed them as they as separate from the "Bibliografia" section. Because of both the history of Italians in Istria, and the current modern significance of the names, Italian exonyms for places in Istria is a notable topic, and a list is not inappropriate. – Ike Lek (talk) 22:45, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete: Fails WP:NOTDICT. There are some exonym articles that are encyclopedic, such as Chinese exonyms, but that article contains well-sourced contextual information and mostly restricts the list to exonyms that have received secondary coverage. The Italian version of this article appears to rely mainly on primary sources. Helpful Raccoon (talk) 03:22, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
To be clear: Wikipedia:Stand-alone lists states Some other, non-glossary lists of words can also yield an encyclopedic page, such as List of English words containing Q not followed by U, the condition being that reliable secondary sources for the topic can be cited. (emphasis mine) Helpful Raccoon (talk) 03:54, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And even with secondary sources, there's still a WP:NOTDICT argument against having exhaustive lists of exonyms. Helpful Raccoon (talk) 04:39, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Retracting this; a list of toponyms seems less crazy than I originally thought, assuming that sources exist, even though it would be quite large. It could be eventually merged into one or more general lists such as List of locations in Istria County. Helpful Raccoon (talk) 07:05, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Coming back to this, I find myself reconsidering whether these names are truly exonyms at all, as many have official status and are used locally by ethnic Italians. If the page isn't even about true exonyms, this changes things significantly. – Ike Lek (talk) 05:15, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think they are actually endonyms.[5] --TadejM my talk 11:05, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Comment the same is true for the region of Dalmatia and a similar article (List of Italian exonyms in Dalmatia) was recently deleted by PROD. IF the outcome of this AfD is anything other than delete, then the same should apply to that list. Giuliotf (talk) 18:48, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted redirect without improvement. Searches did not turn up enough in-depth coverage from independent, reliable sources to support meeting WP:GNG. Onel5969 TT me 20:08, 12 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep First of all, I've created the page and after a while "User:Onel5969" redirected page despite this notable content. If the internet was widespread in 1979, there would have been more online resources like the 2009 Mediterranean Games. Are we to say that an article is not noteworthy simply because of technological backwardness? Old newspaper archives are invaluable resources for sports organizations and difficult to access unless they have been transferred online. However, when the same information is checked from newspaper sources in different countries, there is no doubt about the accuracy of the information. I used four fundamental newspaper archives for 1979 Mediterranean Games. Slovenian Delo and Primorski dnevnik, Spanish El Mundo Deportivo, and Serbian Borba. These four newspaper archives can be accessed free and online. Unfortunately, I'm currently having problems accessing these newspaper archives, but I think it can be solved in time because 3 months ago these archives were active and I remember I used these sources last summer. For this reason, I cannot provide in-line references, otherwise I can create almost the same article like them: Water polo at the 1979 Mediterranean Games and Basketball at the 1979 Mediterranean Games. Because, there is quite a lot of content related to the Mediterranean Games in the sports pages of the relevant newspapers dated September 1979. If the 1979 Mediterranean Games are noteworthy, I don't think there can be any doubt that the sports of these games are noteworthy. If the sports of the Mediterranean Games are not noteworthy, I can throw away my research in the newspaper archives. The Mediterranean Games are no different from the Asian Games or the Pan-American Games. Because there are many articles on sports such as Sepak takraw at the 1990 Asian Games, which is not a widespread sport, but I'm surprised that the notability of a sport such as rugby, which is widely popular around the world, is questioned in an international sports event where countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea compete.
  • All in all, I think it would be very unfair if this page is deleted because I can't provide in-line references or because the newspaper archive links are temporarily not working. However, please feel free to delete it if it will not be noteworthy just because it is rugby, even though I can footnote the relevant sources score by score as a result of the discussion here. You can even delete the other 3 rugby pages in the Mediterranean Games (in here. I would also like to ask for suggestions for other sports articles such as water polo because I don't want to spend hours adding information for a team sport other than football, basketball and volleyball if it will be deleted like this.

I've removed the sources of this article because they weren't related to the article itself. The page should now be deleted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JacktheBrown (talkcontribs) 23:06, 12 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, it makes no sense to keep two very similar articles; either delete the gianduiotto page (with only one source, which refers to Nutella (?)) or merge it with gianduja. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JacktheBrown (talkcontribs) 22:09, 12 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete - Only two non-trivial, independent pieces could be located. The only English-language hit is a single paragraph in a Guardian travel puff piece. Such routine/trivial mentions do not constitute the “significant coverage” required.Dahawk04 Talk 💬 23:22, 12 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note: This discussion has been included in the deletion sorting lists for the following topics: Food and drink and Italy. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 23:24, 12 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - Searching just one paper, La Stampa, on Google via "site:lastampa.it "gianduiotto"" finds plenty of coverage. More can be found in my sandbox, where I'm currently researching gianduja (chocolate). It may be good to merge the two pages, but hopefully such a discussion can be delayed until I finish digging up all relevant sources. Rollinginhisgrave (talk | contributions) 02:47, 13 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
All cited material is routine or tangential:
    • Oxford Companion to Sugar & Sweets – ~150 words inside the broader gianduja entry.
    • Kopp, Lebovitz, Roden – one-paragraph mentions in general chocolate guides.
    • Padovani Mondo Nutella – incidental, not independent of industry.
    • La Stampa hits – festival blurbs & shop promos; routine local news.
None amount to the “significant coverage in reliable, independent sources” demanded by WP:GNG. Suitable as citations within Gianduja (chocolate), but not enough for a standalone page. Dahawk04 Talk 💬 13:32, 13 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Putting aside discussions of the other sources, three La Stampa hits that contribute to GNG are [8][9][10]. I picked these off the first page of Google, none are close to "festival blurbs & shop promos; routine local news", they are all in depth discussions of industry and history, with significant discussion that is about gianduiotto rather than gianduja generally. I'll note per [11] that "the gianduiotto praline was the first chocolate ever to be individually wrapped."
Dahawk04, if you would like, when I've finished the research and added sources, would you like me to notify you and you can more fully evaluate whether coverage is insufficient? There is WP:NORUSH for merging. Rollinginhisgrave (talk | contributions) 13:55, 13 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Keep These are very famous chocolates in Italy, originating from Turin, the Italian wiki article has many more sources, on top of that the CNN travel article that was recently added to the page and also this French article [1] show that they have received in depth coverage outside of Turin local news. I believe it clearly fails WP:NCORP. This is the closest thing to SIGCOV I can find (though, ironically, not used in the article at all), but other than that it appears to be entirely trivial or not fulfilling WP:CORPDEPTH. Notability is not inherited from a company's games. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 08:23, 2 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I've found some other useful articles. [12] [13] [14] [15][16]. Are they helping? Thank you EneaCirce (talk) 15:38, 2 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The repubblica/italian.tech article looks on the edge of the criteria. Generally, 3 sources in-line with the guidelines are necessary. IgelRM (talk) 09:40, 5 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - Please see this discussion for further context. Noteworth bits include the article creator having a WP:COI and generally getting advice and getting some general advice that this probably isn't meeting WP:GNG or WP:CORPDEPTH, neither of which prevented the draft getting published apparently. Sergecross73 msg me 17:04, 2 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if the notability criteria for companies is stricter than the games they produced, given that they have their own notability criteria, but not for games. Or maybe its just that they don't really write about the company and focus on games instead. I'm surprised that it even went thru AfC and expected that reviewers should accept drafts that have a good change to not be nominated for (or survive an) AfD. I've been a reviewer since the start of the year. JuniperChill (talk) 10:36, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say the criteria are exactly the same for companies and their games. NCORP is just a specific way of applying GNG, making it more clear what is and isn't significant coverage. The issue is that games are more notable than companies, because most companies only matter in a rather geographically confined area or employ a very small amount of people, whereas the games are distributed globally and get the coverage that entails. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 13:00, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
