Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Sports

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sports. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sports|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Sports. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.

For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

Darren Walsh (tennis) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

This tennis player never played an ATP Tour level, Grand Slam or Davis Cup match, there are no references on this article and when I searched I found only very brief, passing mentions usually in results lists and one story on the University of Bath website about his doubles partner which mentioned they played together but nothing substantial about him. I therefore believe this article fails GNG and SIGCOV guidelines and should be deleted. I would have Prodded it but a check of the edit history reveals it was Prodded in 2015 and deProdded using what I think are now defunct criteria. Anxioustoavoid (talk) 12:47, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The Challenger doubles title is of a high enough level to meet WP:NTENNIS. My search for sources has found a small bio at [1], but his relatively common name is polluting my search results with entries about other people. IffyChat -- 13:43, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I may be missing something (and I apologise if I am) but the link goes to a diary style article about an under 14s event that, yes mentions Mr Walsh, but is written by one of his fellow 14 year old teammates. Also having a common name does not give you a pass to say the article should exist. How about adding the word tennis to your search? I did so and, as I stated, discovered routine match results and the aforementioned university story about his doubles partner. Anxioustoavoid (talk) 15:37, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That source I found has a few biographical details in the bottom right which si more than you get from a lot of WP:ROUTINE coverage. I haven't !voted yet as you opened this AfD only a few hours ago and I want to spend more time looking for sources. IffyChat -- 15:44, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete agree with the nominator that there is a lack of significant coverage to establish notability as most mentions are brief. Note that WP:NTENNIS is saying that people who reach achieve in one of the 5 categories listedare likely to have coverage that meets notability guidelines, not that the achievement itself indicates notability.
Anonrfjwhuikdzz (talk) 15:07, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And, as a comment, I'm not convinced winning a challenger tournament is a good indicator of whether significant, non-routine coverage would exist for a player.Anonrfjwhuikdzz (talk) 15:09, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Tag team that lasted a year. Chief problem is WP:GNG: main sources are database entries, with a WP:BEFORE check pulling up nothing substantial. Two books are cited with this article: one page from an overview of WWE wrestling in the 80s (Shields: inaccessible on Google Books, but it would be hard to argue significant coverage from a single page overviewing an era of pro wrestling), and another broad book covering the history of pro wrestling. Nothing standalone is the concern with these cites. /over.throws/ 16:18, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious notability (WP:NCORP/WP:GNG). The article has no footnotes, there is a list of possible sources in 'Further reading' but no indication they mention this organization. My BEFORE fails to find anything except a few passing mentions (like in this academic article, which is reliable but WP:SIGCOV is an issue - passing mentions in two sentences are not good enough, I fear); maybe there are sources in Japanese but ja wiki article is no better than ours. This is about to be deleted from pl wiki (where we recently cleaned a bunch of articles on non-notable Polish akido organizations that nobody except themselves have noticed). Cho Hee-soo (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

I have conducted a WP:BEFORE search to assess the notability of this article. I searched in Google, Naver News, and English-language Korean news sources including The Korea Herald, Yonhap News, and KBS World using both English ("Cho Hee-soo rhythmic gymnast") and Korean ("조희수 리듬체조") keywords.

The only results available are routine coverage from sports result listings and minor announcements in domestic outlets. There are no significant independent sources that offer in-depth coverage or analysis of the subject.

According to WP:NSPORTS (Wikipedia:Notability for sportspeople), an athlete is presumed notable if they have "received significant coverage in multiple, reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject." Cho Hee-soo has not met this threshold. The article does not demonstrate lasting impact or significant coverage beyond simple event participation.

Therefore, I believe this article does not meet Wikipedia's general notability guideline (WP:GNG) nor the specific guideline for athletes (WP:NSPORTS) and should be deleted. Jeong seolah (talk) 06:10, 4 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete I have found no sources indicating the Austria team for the Fed cup/Billie Jean King cup is or has been notable. There is routine coverage of their results from certain years, but I have not found anything else. Merely claiming it is a notable BJK team does not make it so, there needs to be sources to meet general notability.
Anonrfjwhuikdzz (talk) 00:12, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, you asked for sources, here's some: [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13]. Is that enough for you? IffyChat -- 10:30, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
None of these sources seem to be more than coverage of the team's results or their hopes for the Fed Cup/BJK cup. In my opinion, these would fall under routine coverage as it's pretty common for teams/players to be interviewed before, during, and after tournaments. I don't think these sources establish notability per WP:NSPORT or WP:ROUTINE. Anonrfjwhuikdzz (talk) 22:41, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That is what you're going to get for sports teams. If there's consistent year round coverage of their performance/team composition, that should go towards notability. I'd struggle to find many sources even for Austria national football team that wouldn't meet some definition of routine. Jevansen (talk) 23:02, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Article on an individual that appears to have might have played a single season of professional lacrosse, though it isn't clear he actually ever played. Sourcing is all either non-independent profiles or statistical outlines, with one local news outlet on his transfer from Syracuse to Georgetown. • Weak Keep. This in-depth story in The Philadelphia Inquirer along with this and this from Syracuse.com is probably sufficient for GNG. BeanieFan11 (talk) 17:07, 25 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
In this particular case, I think those sources are fairly Run-of-the-Mill coverage. Local newspapers also cover high school and college athletes, in every city and town, there are several high schools and colleges and papers that cover them; inevitably, these athletes will receive coverage.
The Inquirer and the Syracuse.com are both major news outlets, but they also serve as local news, which does make this a little less cut and dry than it otherwise would be. All of these sources, though, are simply profiles of a local high school (in the case of the Inquirer), or collegiate (in the case of the Syracuse.com sources) athlete, without much of a context outside of local interest. A quick perusal of both shows that these sorts of profiles happen daily, sometimes multiple times daily. Using these three sources to establish notability would mean that there are quite literally thousands of similar cases where non-notable high school or collegiate athletes would now meet the notability threshold for an article, just based on coverage in the Inquirer and Syracuse.com.
Finally, to quote the WP:ATHLETE guideline: The guidelines on this page are intended to reflect the fact that sports figures are likely to meet Wikipedia's basic standards of inclusion if they have achieved success in a major international competition at the highest level. In this case, the subject appears to have only played a single season of professional lacrosse, with almost no coverage of this beyond a stats page. The coverage on his participation in a collegiate championship is limited to a single page commenting on his social media posts. nf utvol (talk) 13:31, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
ROTM is an essay; whether there's "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject" is all that matters here. And in this case, he does meet that, with in-depth stories in The Inquirer and Syracuse.com. The significant coverage on the subject does not need to be regarding something that you subjectively deem of greater than "local interest" in order to count as significant coverage. You say that this would allow for "quite literally thousands of similar cases where non-notable high school or collegiate athletes would now meet the notability threshold for an article" – however, the difference here is that the subject also competed professionally at, what I believe is, the highest-level of lacrosse (i.e. he's not just some random local college player like you're making him out to be). Lastly, the ATHLETE "guidelines" are just a garbled mess that few still rely on. Note that NSPORT includes nothing talking about lacrosse, thus even the greatest lacrosse player of all time would still fail it. BeanieFan11 (talk) 14:36, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
After doing a little more digging it isn't clear that Kahoe ever actually played a regular season game of professional lacrosse. According to the stats page linked in the article, he was drafted by the Boston Blazers in 2009 but never played a game. Then, according to Lacrosse All Stars (which I'm not sure is a RS anyway), he was drafted by the Florida Launch in 2013, but I can't find anything at all that indicates he ever played a single game with them beyond playing on their practice squad in 2017. This, in my view, means that whatever time he may have spent in MLL/PLL/NLL does not serve to add to his notability. nf utvol (talk) 15:09, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if he never played in the MLL/PLL/NLL, that makes the case weaker, though he still arguably meets GNG. BeanieFan11 (talk) 15:36, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep Super 8 T20 Cup was much more selective than the National T20 Cup, had T20 status, and was the precursor of the Pakistan Super League. Pakistani publications regularly covered it while the event was ongoing ([23], [24], [25], [26]), and I'm sure there must be some offline coverage of it in almanacs. Since Wikipedia also functions as an almanac (WP:5P1), we must cover T20 matches as part of our almanac coverage.
The tournament was definitely notable, but I'm not sure about the individual seasons that were not nominated. In any case, the matches held in those seasons shoulde be part of our almanac coverage. You could request a merge and renaming of those seasons so that they resemble maybe in the form of 2011 season in Pakistani cricket, and so on, and add those matches there, but it is not for WP:AFD to decide. Please initiate a WP:RFC on WP:CRIC, so that all members are on the same page and we do not have selective purges due to the lack of WP:AFD participation. How exactly? You cite WP:OSE, which states, "The nature of Wikipedia means that you cannot make a convincing argument based solely on whether other articles do or do not exist..." Neither of us were making arguments on the grounds of "...whether other articles do or do not exist...", but were instead arguing in support of a Keep based in part on WP:5P1. @Veldsenk might have more to add? Craig Ritter is a lineman never played a down of NFL football, and he barely played much of any other professional football. He played in five games in the 1995 CFL season for the Memphis Mad Dogs, per another source, and was briefly a starter on their O-line, and he played arena football. But there's no significant coverage of him at all—and I scoured the Orange County, Phoenix, Memphis, and other papers for it. That's a WP:GNG failure. There are more than enough sources, including multiple non-local article features about Momo, which were all linked in the first AfD nomination and many of which are re-linked above. More than enough to pass WP:SIGCOV. FlipandFlopped 01:43, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Coment. Yeah, "keep" probably remains the right result in our notability universe where the existence of SIGCOV is the touchstone rather than tangible on-field accomplishments. This was a player who showed great promise, thus drawing SIGCOV, but his career was cut short by injury before major on-field accomplishments panned out at the collegiate level. Previously soft-deleted for lack of notability. I doubt the topic has since become notable. Janhrach (talk) 13:39, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep – Eren Legend meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines due to his recognized impact in the bodybuilding community. He has been featured in reputable fitness magazines and websites, with coverage from independent sources discussing his achievements and training insights. His involvement in bodybuilding competitions and contributions to fitness culture further support his notability. Deleting the article would remove a relevant figure from the fitness community, and the existing sources substantiate his presence in the field. Therefore, I believe the article should be kept at least a Biography stubs. Lukadon (talk) 03:14, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The subject fails both WP:NKICK and WP:MMA. The article has atrocious citations. I checked all of them and removed 95% of them. What is left are fight results with only his name mention, no significant coverage. As much as I love that the subject is a Lethwei coach, the award by Lethwei World itself is not sufficient enough to justify the standalone article. I cannot find any significant coverage about the subject, fails WP:GNG. Here is a brief analysis of the citations:

  • Keep Super 8 T20 Cup was much more selective than the National T20 Cup, had T20 status, and was the precursor of the Pakistan Super League. Pakistani publications regularly covered it while the event was ongoing ([30], [31], [32], [33]), and I'm sure there must be some offline coverage of it in almanacs.
Veldsenk (talk) 12:17, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep, the point about the almanac is a good one from Veldsenk. This article also is notable when factoring Pakistani sources in addition. Which is permissible. Iljhgtn (talk) 02:55, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Veldsenk and Iljhgtn: see WP:OSE, which is an argument to avoid in afd, but that's what you're doing here. Vestrian24Bio 15:02, 6 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Iljhgtn (talk) 17:47, 6 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
"We already act like an almanac for international cricket matches" - which is part WP:OSE.

None of the sources in the article seem to provide WP:SIGCOV, and I was unable to find any on Google or newspaper archives such as Newspapers.com, Delpher, Archief Eemland, Stadsarchief Rotterdam, and Gallica. I did find some mentions like 1 and 2 using an abbreviation of his name ("T. van Zwieteren"), but nothing substantive. Another Dutch referee (albeit with much more international experience) from the same era, Raphaël van Praag, was recently kept after multiple in-depth sources were found using these same archives, so maybe someone else has more luck. JTtheOG (talk) 21:36, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Barr Theo, Let'srun, and Clara A. Djalim, with the extra sources, can we settle for a keep? gidonb (talk) 17:09, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as a historically important referee, by WP:NEXIST and by the WP:GNG that is fully met. Theo van Zwieteren passed away in 1962, so no BLP concerns apply. The article was created by Barr Theo based on his historical significance, and that assessment holds.
I was recently pointed to this article by the creator and made several corrections—his date of birth, for example, was off by a day. This followed my overhaul of an article on Raphaël van Praag, a distant cousin I had never heard of before. Van Praag, who was also a gifted communicator, became Holland’s favorite son in Belgian soccer management. He left the field forever just before much of our family was exterminated.
Van Zwieteren’s international experience extended beyond the Netherlands, in international games, and during his residence in Hamburg. That, too, is worth exploring. The sources cited are from Delpher, which aggregates historical Dutch newspapers. This is the correct search string. For the Rotterdam region, I also check the Schiedam-based Krantenkijker, though it often yields less than Delpher.

These are sources that by themselves provide SIGCOV:

These are sources from which SIGCOV can be pieced together, a legitimate approach for historically important professionals (see the subsequent list):

These are sources that state Van Zwieteren's importance as a referee:

More than sufficient for me to a keep. Svartner (talk) 08:26, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi User:Clariniie! I can take that. The last four sources are not in depth. These sources are significant because they talk to the importance of Van Zwieteren, i.e. the sources are important in a category other than SIGCOV. The first two sources are SIGCOV and the next four sources contribute toward SIGCOV. gidonb (talk) 18:15, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Gidonb: I'm pretty sure the first SIGCOV link you posted is the incorrect one as it consists of one sentence of coverage and is a duplicate of the Rotterdamsch Nieuwsblad link below it. Cheers, JTtheOG (talk) 18:27, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a bit unsure of this one, as he played mainly in the 1990s and had a rather long career, but in all four related languages, I could only find this, which is hardly WP:SIGCOV. I could find literally nothing else—hardly even a mention of his existence. The article has also been a stub for going on 10 years now. I figured that it would be worth putting it up for discussion here, as it doesn't appear as though this article is improvable without seeking out physical archives for information—and even then it's not guaranteed. Contested PROD. Amateur team with no relevance in Brazilian football, having not played in any competition in which it has achieved sporting merit. Most of the sources present do not demonstrate WP:CONTINUED coverage, only mentioning the curiosity that the club has an anarchist theme. Blatant fails in WP:GNG and WP:MILL since there are countless amateur teams in Brazil with their own themes. Svartner (talk) 08:04, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Does not pass GNG. The player appears only in databases. No sport achievements, he played only in lower German tiers. FromCzech (talk) 09:53, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • The club references aren't independent though, which was my main point. Which of the sources in the German article do you consider usable for our article, even if not necessarily SIGCOV? Robby.is.on (talk) 11:17, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • I remind what GNG says, that SIGCOV is not a guarantee that a subject merits its own page. His greatest sporting achievements are single season in the 3rd highest German league (during which he contributed to his team's relegation to the 4th league) and an unsuccessful trial at a second league club (as dewiki says). Common sense does not see this as something that should have an entry in an encyclopedia. FromCzech (talk) 08:48, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There are no decent sources for this that I saw, certainly no reliable/acceptable ones, and none are included in the article, which is just a bunch of OR. Drmies (talk) 04:58, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Note: This discussion has been included in the deletion sorting lists for the following topics: Martial arts and China. WCQuidditch 05:28, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • I checked under the purported Chinese name. The Chinese book of C# programming, using a martial arts computer game as an example, that turned up early in the results was not a source. But it was in amongst page after page of books with scantily clad manga figures on the covers that were definitely not sources. I don't know what you have stumbled upon, Drmies, but the books results tell me that it is fantasy and not reality. Yes, I bloody well am judging said books by their covers.

Checking the article talk page I see that people have challenged this for being video game manual fantasy since 2006. Checking the edit history I see that it has been variously sourced to Everything2, and exemplifed by counterfactuals such as the Kill Bill movie series and — Yes. — by anime. The zh:流星錘] article has just two discoverable sources: ISBN 7500060874 I have no access to, although from the citation in that article it seems that it is as suspect a source as the only source cited in this article back in its 2005 incarnation, and ISBN 9789866712210 is explicitly a book of fantasy weapons from a Taiwanese publisher of fantasy books.

So it looks like Wikipedia has been promoting fantasy as fact for 20 years, again.

    Uncle G (talk) 09:52, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

To add to this: I checked out the images. One is a picture created by a user who appears to be as historical arms enthusiast. The others stem from Flickr, where a private collector named Gary Todd has uploaded images of his collection.
Considering that Todd apparently owns a whole pile of these weapons, you'd think we would have at least one image from a museum collection and/or verified by a historian.
Now there are apparently real historical illustrations of this weapon: https://theravenswoodacademy.com/new-page-69
Not that that by itself would be sufficient for an article. Cortador (talk) 11:20, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

My search for sources has found a small bio at [55], but his relatively common name is polluting my search results with entries about other people.

  • Delete agree with the nominator that there is a lack of significant coverage to establish notability as most mentions are brief.
Alright, you asked for sources, here's some: [56] [57] [58] [59] [60] [61] [62].

They do not have any incidents like the "Curtain Call" by the Kliq. They only teamed once onscreen in a Survivor Series match in 1995, apparently called "The Darkside", unlike The Kliq who had The Outsiders going to WCW, nWo and DX.

Short title reigns and tag team of the year is not good enough. For example, Kane and X-Pac, Kofi Kingston and R-Truth does not and should not have articles even though they were champions and won the award. Most of the content in this article seems excessive. The most significant part is their matches with America's Most Wanted and LAX, but that is summarized well in both men's articles. • Keep based on WP:NEXIST. I expanded the article with a few new WP:RS sources I found the day before it was nominated. Zambia is a notoriously difficult country to research, and there is broadly speaking a systemic bias against African countries and people that affects the level of coverage available to us. Subject was the top marathon runner from his country so coverage should exist in Zambian newspaper sources from the era as soon as they are available to us. --Habst (talk) 15:52, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per WP:BASIC. The article is already a stub anyway, and the subject performed at an international level (and top of his country) and covered in reliable sources. Although the coverage is not significant, pulled together, they demonstrate notability, and at the very least, passed our BASIC test. I do agree with Habst about getting sources for some African countries especially for the older generation whose achievements would have been covered in their local press but have not been digitized yet for the internet age, and only available in their local archives. I experienced a similar problem many years ago when researching a particular individual and had to make a personal visit to the local archive and the media house's archive. This is why I'm always more lenient when it concerns much older African figures because most of the local African coverage at the time have not been digitised yet. Some of these African media houses (especially older ones) are aware of this and are working to digitize them with the limited resources they have, but just not fast enough. I'm therefore more sympathetic to the older generation who contributed a lot but have not been recognised due to these technical issues. However, for younger African generation, I'm less lenient because they are part of the internet age and getting coverage shouldn't be difficult. Tamsier (talk) 17:39, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Redirect to Zambia at the 1980 Summer Olympics#Athletics. It seems we are all agreed that there is insufficient sources to meet GNG/BASIC. Tamsier cites BASIC, but by saying the coverage is "not significant", it is evident that we do not, in fact, reach BASIC, which states it is met where the subject received significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject. What we have clearly falls short for several reasons. An IAR case is being made that sources may exist in undigitised newspaper archives. Setting aside that any such coverage may well be primary, and thus excluded from notability considerations, there is a question as to whether any credence be given to the possibility of such sourcing in establishing notability for article retention. I agree that non English sources, and African sources can be troublesome to locate, but the flaw in the IAR argument is this: if the sources are simply unavailable to any editor, then no editor can write this page. They cannot write it unless and until sources become available, and so we are in the same position as someone we think should be covered, but about whom no sources have yet been published. It does not improve the encyclopaedia to retain an unwritable sub-stub about someone who may or may not meet notability requirements. The Redirect ATD retains the page history, for whatever it's worth. Notability is not met, the artcle can't be written. Deletion is appropriate but a redirect ATD is a suitable alternative. I think the WP:NEXIST case is strong for this subject, with achievements going far beyond just "participation" but qualifying in four events across three different major international competitions. Malawi is a notoriously difficult country to research, and every single one of the newspapers in Malawi are all either not accessible at all, or do not have online archives going back to the 1980s when Mwausegha was most prominent. Should someone search even one of these daily papers in the 1980s and find nothing on Mwausegha, I would happily retract my !vote. But evidence from similar AfDs shows that Olympians of Mwausegha's caliber tend to have coverage available when we can actually access the relevant archives. --Habst (talk) 00:32, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There's a few details on this AfD that make this subject a better NEXIST candidate than most other athlete biographies. Subject qualified for the Olympics in two different events, and set three national records that still stand throughout her career. We have data from three different independently-compiled WP:RS describing a career over nine years, far longer than most other Olympians. And most importantly, the Central African Republic newspapers which would have covered the subject have not been checked because their archives are not available online:
  • Be Afrika: No online archive
  • Centrafrique Presse: Earliest online archive is from February 2008
  • Le Citoyen: Archive here only covers some months from 1999 and 2000, it's worth a look but is only available to CRL member institutions
  • Le Confident: No online archive
  • Le Democrate: No online archive found
  • E Le Songo: No online archive found
  • Echo de Centrafrique: No online archive found
Because the most likely avenues for coverage have not not been checked, there is a systemic bias against African countries, and the RS and WP:V info we do have is indicative of notability, a keep decision would be justified. --Habst (talk) 16:26, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Please familiarize yourself with WP:NOTABILITY, WP:NATHLETE, WP:RELIABLE, WP:PRIMARY/WP:SECONDARY, WP:INDEPENDENT, and WP:DUE.
A source existing does not make the source notable, nor does it make it reliable. Wikipedia prioritizes reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject.
This page is primarily built on primary sources not independent of the author, or which do not provide any semblance of notability such as the direct links to event placements and her personal details. Primary sources are okay in some circumstances, but in this case all that would be left in early life is a link to her own page cited to a claim that she was born in Ontario. Career beginnings section is exclusively cited to primary sources. So far there is nothing to suggest this person is notable as an athlete, just that their athletic profile exists. If someone made a page for me and cited my USChess profile, that would not make me notable as a chess player - what would is if reliable secondary sources discuss my play.
The 'women's rights advocate' claim is sourced to a Megyn Kelly appearance. Megyn Kelly's show - and syndicated television news generally speaking - is not a reliable source.
The activism section is sourced to a vimeo video by the subject, rebel news (not a reliable source [78]), a link to assembly minutes (Primary source); and then a citelist of a podcast, two WP:UNDUE blogposts, and a link to a primary source from an anti trans advocacy group.
So now we get to the Controversy section.

Hutchinson gained attention after being removed from the "Resilient London: Meet Your Neighbours" exhibit at Museum London, Ontario, due to her comments on transgender athletes.

This claim is cited to 7 sources. CBC News (mostly reliable with the caveat that it's state funded), Reduxx (a hate blog), another blog, the New York Post (Unreliable per WP:NYPOST), a local affiliate of NBC which does not actually contribute to the claim but rather is just a primary source for the comments themselves, London Free Press (A local newspaper), GB news (unreliable, and would be deprecated if it was cited more [79]), and Fox news (unreliable WP:FOXNEWS).
We then have an accidental double cite of the same CBC news article, Newsweek (used to be reliable, but now isn't WP:NEWSWEEK), True North (definitely an unreliable news source and I'm happy to take that to WP:RSN if you want confirmation). We then have Fox News again, Daily Citizen (an anti LGBT advocacy group, not a news source), true north again, and then Fox News a third time. Next is a triplet of sources, the first to a blogpost, the second to Sportskeeda - which I have never heard of but I will assume for the benefit of the doubt that it is fine, and Outkick (which is under FOX News). Outkick again, and the earlier local newspaper from her home town.
The personal life snippet about alcoholism is sourced to Gamesday London (sports section of the earlier local paper) and CTV which is fine.
So after all of that, we are left with:
A single CBC article and potentially a Sportskeeda article covering her comments and the aftermath, and the CTV article about her alcoholism.
That's 2, possibly 3, reliable secondary sources at best to provide notability. This is a local interest story picked up by anti trans advocates, but she is not even notable for that relative to other figures like Riley Gaines. This person does not meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines, and Wikipedia is WP:NOTNEWS. Relm (talk) 13:30, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

He's listed on page 16 (Arabic is read right to left), page 17 is the one with the adverts, next to pictures of athletics. I don't know enough Arabic to translate but I think surely due to the OCR issues we've discussed even one relevant match in the woefully incomplete archive.org collection is a very telling sign that there's good coverage out there. --Habst (talk) 23:35, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Arabic is read right to left, but in that case it is page 2. The Internet Archive numbers left to right and seems to reorder the pages thus, so the page is 17. No matter. I have also noticed a discrepancy in the Internet Archive numbering if you search for a word on a page. It seems to be off by one, so I expect that is where the confusion came in. I'll take a closer look at page 2/17 or whatever it is. :) Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 09:06, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
So the article in question is titled "The national athletics team begins its camp today" and tells us "The national athletics team begins its training camp and leaves the country today for Al-Asab." The page subject is one of 22 names listed. This is a passing mention and not SIGCOV. We would expect he would show up in a few such listings but that does not speak to encyclopaedic notability. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 09:17, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I still disagree about the paging, archive.org says "p16" when you search for the name. Before I found this match I wouldn't expect that Al-Rabeeah would show up in any such listings at all, given that I've searched for dozens of Middle Eastern historical athletes at AfD recently and most have little to no online presence. Given the OCR issues discussed in archive.org texts, I think that this one match is indicative of further coverage that we simply aren't equipped to find yet as non-Arabic speakers. --Habst (talk) 15:43, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that archive.org tells you it is 16 when you search text on the page. That is what I said about being off by one, and I really don't think it matters. We found the mention. Keep. We have so much WP:V info about this subject from WP:RS documenting a career spanning more than six years, which is why I expanded the article to include some of that info I found. There is without a doubt more coverage in Equatoguinean sources, but the sad reality is the vast majority of those sources are only available in physical media for the time being. To prove this, I went through all the publications at List of newspapers in Equatorial Guinea and checked (keeping in mind the subject's career peaked around 2003 to 2008):
  • El Ebano: Archives only go back to August 2020
  • Ahora EG: Archives only go to March 2019 (click the "next" button until the end)
  • La Gaceta: Archives only go to February 2023
  • La Nacion: Could not find an online archive
  • La Opinion: Archives only go to September 2016
  • El Tiempo: Could not find an online archive
  • La Verdad: Archives only go to July 2014
  • La voz del pueblo: Could not find an online archive
  • Diario Rombe: Established in 2012
So, we don't have access to a single Equatoguinean newspaper from the subject's time period, when we know he was regarded as "the nation's best" according to American media. I am also convinced by User:Tamsier's argument in Special:Diff/1284809145 that there is a systemic bias against African countries broadly, and we should take that into account when evaluating the accessibility of sources. --Habst (talk) 01:47, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It is primary for the race and little - if anything - to write an article from. There are 43 words about the page subject. It is not SIGCOV, but it says, in full, it would have taken a career- best from Equitorial Guinea's Reginaldo Micha Ndong. "Reggie" clocked 11.47sec at the last World Championships when only 16. He is his country's finest but yesterday's 11.27sec was yards short of putting our Mark out of the afternoon. We need someone to be writing about the subject, not just mentioning that he ran in a race. Leaning delete here, but let's see if anything else can come to light. Also, is there a suitable redirect target? Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 19:56, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Without comment on the rest, order of suitable redirect targets for Olympians should always be:
    1. <country> at the <year> Summer Olympics for one-time Olympians
    2. If not mentioned or country page does not exist, link to only Olympic event results article
    3. If multiple events / Olympics, pick the event results article the subject finished best at

So for this case it would be Equatorial Guinea at the 2008 Summer Olympics. --Habst (talk) 20:54, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that. I'll keep looking a bit longer for sources before entering a !vote. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 21:46, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. From my experience in writing an article on a recent Equatoguinean Olympian, it appears that the country gives a good deal of coverage to their prominent athletes. In this case, he was known as "the best" in Equatorial Guinea per American British media. That the American British media somehow knows he was regarded as Number 1 in Equatorial Guinea indicates that there would be coverage in Equatorial Guinea of him. Remember that not one Equatoguinean newspaper has been searched, since no archives are accessible to us. Yet we still know that he was very accomplished in his country and regarded as the best. Further, the pretty decent expansion of the article arguably satisfies WP:NBASIC, which notes that If the depth of coverage in any given source is not substantial, then multiple independent sources may be combined to demonstrate notability. However, I think this should also be an instance where WP:COMMONSENSE should be used and we should admit that the odds the number one athlete in a nation would not have coverage -- when we know they give decent coverage to their top athletes and nothing has been searched -- is so very slim that a strict application of the rules would not be helpful to the encyclopedia. BeanieFan11 (talk) 22:16, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The Sunday Telegraph is British, not American. "He is his country's finest" implies that he was the runner with the fastest current times for his country at that point. It was speaking in the context of a single race and not necessarily as an all time great. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 22:25, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
How can someone be the "his country's finest" in only a single race? You can be a nation's "best performer", maybe, but I don't think that wording fits and I don't think that interpretation of the text is accurate. Considering the newspaper went into his race results from a year past, I think there is some more general proclamation being made here. --Habst (talk) 15:45, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I said fastest current times (plural), leading to his selection to compete in that race. He is the country's finest because he is there. Nothing in that article, occasioned by a report of the British interest in it, can be used to infer that he was the finest ever for his country. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 19:26, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep, I found a source I think is SIGCOV on the subject in Al Qabas, page 23 here: [85] Unfortunately the OCR is horrendous, but this is the translation of the first part of the article with DeepL proving it provides coverage on the subject: "2 Alah Shah 5 the athletics machine in the tournament and came asp the stakes which was established in 1913 160 Q 166 and also beat the Mexican injury winning mare Razza Aa Aa Dai Ci and is located at the center of the center of the r Aa Aa Aa 16-7 and Ali Al Anzushefi Akim defeat and against 7 wins in the race Der Baksar Baksar III in Azmi, Turkey for the third Madjaba Madad III. He had difficulty exchanging punches in the Yarmouk heptathlon here on Wednesday...." Given that it's an exact name match and talking about hurdles, it's definitely about the subject.
This paper is from 1980, which would mean the subject was only 16-17 when being written about by a major national paper here. We know from WP:RS that he continued to improve for at least four years following that (likely more considering we don't have good Arab Championships coverage) including a PB in 1983, which is far more than we know about most other Kuwaiti Olympians from the era. Due to the source and WP:NEXIST, I think a keep decision would be justified. --Habst (talk) 00:39, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
One other thing I'd bring up is, considering the poor OCR quality, how many hits in Al Qabas or other newspapers about the subject are we missing just because his name was transcribed by a computer incorrectly? Having an Arabic speaker to help search for variations or common scannos of the name would help a lot. --Habst (talk) 00:42, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Where are you getting that translation from? and based on what? Page 23 of that issue is not about athletics at all, although four youth athletes are mentioned on page 24, so I thought this might be the article you are looking at, but I cannot see anything there that would match the above translation. I downloaded the full OCR text for the issue here [86] but there is no mention of the page subject. No Mubarek. No Yarmouk. No Epsom or any of the other likely words there. The strangeness of the OCR would likely be caused by the lines of an adjacent article becoming mixed with the lines of this article, so it would be easy enough (or at least possible) to find and read the article correctly if we knew where it was, but it doesn't seem to be where you say. What I can say is that the youth report on page 24 falls in the realm of WP:YOUNGATH. It is also a news report of results, and so a primary source, and it is not SIGCOV. We need much better than this, and this is not really evidence of any significant coverage. To be clear, I can find coverage of this nature in old newspapers about me - and I am sure as heck not notable for my sporting prowess. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 12:54, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind, I found it. Naji Abdullah Mubarak gets 27 words in the second column of the report I was looking in (remember to read from the right), second bullet from the bottom. He was competing in heptathlon, his jump reached 91cm but then he ran into difficulties. As I thought, the above OCR mess is caused by running across the columns of the report, so it is mixing various reports together there. "Sasdol", for instance, is from the next column, so shouldn't be there. In any case, not SIGCOV, and a primary source regarding a youth event. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 15:45, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
27 words, assuming your read of the Al Qabas paper is correct which we can't really verify as neither of us are Arabic speakers, is still pretty substantial in the context of the extremely sparse coverage of the Arab world that archive.org provides. --Habst (talk) 15:47, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Craig Ritter is a lineman never played a down of NFL football, and he barely played much of any other professional football. He played in five games in the 1995 CFL season for the Memphis Mad Dogs, per another source, and was briefly a starter on their O-line, and he played arena football.

Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 07:26, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Habst. I am mindful of two facts: 1) the subject is African, and as many of us know, most African sources (specifically older RS) have not been digitised yet and made available online, but are available offline at local archives e.g. national records and local libraries. 2) Due to the age of the subject and the era he participated in sports at an international level and setting a personal best, he would have been covered in the local press of Liberia, and accessing those old newspapers which aren't available online would demonstrate notability. Just because we can't find sources online does not necessarily mean a subject is not notable. It goes against our ethics on ADL for a nominator to dictate to the community which guidlines they should not invoke in their rationale/votes. The database sources cited are international, with huge budgets, and have an online archive as well as offline. I would not expect the same for a local African newspaper especially at that time, and long before the internet age as we know it today. The very fact that the subject is on their database - and took part at an international level, and set a personal best and national record, demonstrate some notability. Arguing that the subject is not notable is one thing. Arguing that they are not notable because one can't find online sources is something else. WP:NEXIST is very clear on that, and it is a fundamental part of our policies as well prevent potential systematic bias for the reasons I've outlined above. Tamsier (talk) 21:22, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. There is a requirement that athlete articles cite a source of SIGCOV in addition to the subject meeting GNG. NEXIST has less, and less recent, community consensus and anyway doesn't even apply when notability is challenged. Pure database sources are explicitly excluded from counting towards notability and appearing on them is 100% irrelevant. JoelleJay (talk) 15:27, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@JoelleJay, NEXIST can still seldom apply when notability is challenged per the text of the guideline, "However, once an article's notability has been challenged, merely asserting that unspecified sources exist is seldom persuasive".
Database sources can of course contribute to notability if they evidence that SIGCOV exists; for an extreme example, a database entry saying "X athlete was covered in Y newspaper" could be considered even if the article from Y newspaper wasn't accessible to us. So database entries saying that a subject achieved something newsworthy could be notability-indicating by the same thought process.
For biographies in general, there is no requirement that sourcing be cited in the article; only that it exists. The recent shift that you reference is actually away from subject-specific guidelines in general including WP:SPORTCRIT, which should help the case for this article because then we can rely on the more subject-neutral WP:N and NEXIST. --Habst (talk) 16:04, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Pure database sources do not count towards notability. Unspecified sources do not count towards notability.
The guideline for biographies explicitly states: Sports biographies must include at least one reference to a source providing significant coverage of the subject. Meeting this requirement alone does not indicate notability, but it does indicate that there are likely sufficient sources to meet the GNG (general notability guideline).
You are deliberately mischaracterizing the practical outcome of NSPORTS2022, which has had continuous overwhelming support as evidenced by the thousands of sportsperson articles deleted on that basis. JoelleJay (talk) 16:22, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If a database sources indicates that SIGCOV exists somewhere with specificity, it can be used to count towards notability per WP:NEXIST. This applies to any type of source, actually, and not just database sources.
I agree with NSPORTS2022 to the extent that it deprecates subject-specific notability guidelines such as the one you quoted in WP:SPORTCRIT, and I don't see how this is a mischaracterization.
I have great respect for your contributions, and I hope that you can treat me with the same good faith that I treat you as we're both trying to improve the encyclopedia. Saying I'm "deliberately" mischaracterizing something that's complex and can be interpreted in different ways is, in my opinion, not extending good faith. If you disagree with the characterization, then please dispute that instead of making personal comments. --Habst (talk) 18:22, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Redirect to Liberia at the 1972 Summer Olympics: Subject does not appear to meet the notability guidelines due to a lack of WP:SIGCOV. WP:SPORTSBASIC requires at least one piece of significant coverage in the article, and currently there is zero. We just can't assume who the local media would and would not have covered when determining whether to keep any WP:BLP. Redirect as a WP:ATD, which will preserve the page history in the event coverage can be found. Let'srun (talk) 23:00, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Redirect to Liberia at the 1972 Summer Olympics: There is no evidence offered of sources to pass WP:NSPORT/WP:GNG, only the usual waves at WP:NEXIST by keep !voters, which are unconvincing in the absence of actual sources to evaluate. Of course sources might exist in physical archives, but NEXIST does not give us carte blanche to maintain non-compliant articles in mainspace on that possibility. At any rate, redirecting will preserve the page history should future qualifying sources be found. Dclemens1971 (talk) 14:14, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Declined prod with reason "subject meets WP:NATH as a cross country national champion". I'm not sure if this relates to WP:NATH #4 "Have won their country's senior national championship, with the exception of those who have never been ranked in the top 60 on the IAAF world leading list at the end of a given calendar year". There isn't enough evidence that he is in the top 60 IAAF for cross country. All sources are databases and fails WP:SPORTSCRIT. LibStar (talk) 23:21, 30 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

What's always been more important was the general notability guideline, which can be met in a variety of ways including by WP:NEXIST. The case for NEXIST for this subject is strong, as the top Sudanese representative around the world in several disciplines over a multi-year period in the 1970s. I've looked and couldn't find prose-based coverage yet, but I would expect to find articles in physical Sudanese newspapers of the era, which could be accessible to us via a Wikipedian in Sudan. --Habst (talk) 12:58, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Making the global final on its own isn't enough to make the subject notable if he doesn't already have in-depth coverage from multiple independent reliable sources. A google search doesn't yield any coverage of him, though perhaps he is gaining local coverage in China as a result of making a global final in his home country. KnowledgeIsPower9281 (talk) 23:52, 22 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The SINA article goes far beyond the subject's participation at the world championships, going in detail about his life since age 11. Subject also has a long history of notable performance before the World Champs this year going back over nine years, as detailed in the article. Subject is at the peak of his career and was only one second off the Chinese record, and I would expect that several more pieces in will be written about him following the 2025 Diamond League season which begins in China this year. Based on his regional medals I think there's definitely more than what I've found – Google is banned in China so I feel like a fool trying to search his name on Google and expecting relevant results, but even given that major caveat I think we've been able to construct a WP:BASIC-compliant article so far. --Habst (talk) 14:49, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, that article is indeed very good...I can't let the predicting the future slide, though – we have to decide now whether he is notable based on sources that exist now, and the state of the article is irrelevant to his notability. No, I completely disagree; the current version of the article does not establish notability. None of the citations in the article are significant enough to count towards the GNG. We have one (1) source with significant coverage and it's not included in the article yet, putting us very far from a WP:HEY. Still no-one has been able to explain how a 14th-place finish meets any NATH criterion. And, to my astonishment, not even Cunard was able to find more sources. I am unstriking my delete !vote. Toadspike [Talk] 21:51, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate your comments even when we disagree. If you're referring to the SINA article above, that actually is included in the article now. NATH has always been subordinate to the general notability guideline, which can be met in a variety of ways including by WP:NEXIST. What is the reason we would expect Cunard to have found more sources? --Habst (talk) 12:39, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: at the very worst, the outcome should be draftify which is the preferred outcome when a person who looks somewhat/semi-notable might become even more notable in the next 6 months. That means until 1 October 2025, covering the entire 2025 season in the sport of athletics. Geschichte (talk) 08:41, 30 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Draftify per Geschichte. We are not at GNG yet. GNG requires multiple reliable secondary sources with independent and significant coverage. What was there before did not meet these criteria as discussed. Habst added 3 sources, but two are from the same outlet [119] and thus count as one for GNG (and that is without going into detail of the other criteria for the source, such as whether the coverage is independent), and the other source is very much a passing mention. But the passing mention is of what this Chinese outlet sees as a future hope. Although we don't keep pages that don't meet GNG, Geschichte is right to flag that this one may become notable next season. Incubating the article in draft space is an acceptable WP:ATD.
