Administrators' newsletter – January 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2018).

Guideline and policy news

  1. G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
  2. R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
  3. G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.

Technical news

  • Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
  1. At least 8 characters in length
  2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
  3. Different from their username
User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
  • Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
  • {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
  • Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Guideline and policy news

  • A request for comment is currently open to reevaluate the activity requirements for administrators.
  • Administrators who are blocked have the technical ability to block the administrator who blocked their own account. A recent request for comment has amended the blocking policy to clarify that this ability should only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as account compromises, where there is a clear and immediate need.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus in favor of deprecating The Sun as a permissible reference, and creating an edit filter to warn users who attempt to cite it.

Technical news

  • A discussion regarding an overhaul of the format and appearance of Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is in progress (permalink). The proposed changes will make it easier to create requests for those who are not using Twinkle. The workflow for administrators at this venue will largely be unchanged. Additionally, there are plans to archive requests similar to how it is done at WP:PERM, where historical records are kept so that prior requests can more easily be searched for.

Miscellaneous

  • Voting in the 2019 Steward elections will begin on 08 February 2019, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 28 February 2019, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
  • A new IRC bot is available that allows you to subscribe to notifications when specific filters are tripped. This requires that your IRC handle be identified.

Your username

It's a bit odd, by your username apparently is in violation of our policies. I might be wrong, but I and many others view all cap users as a representatives of a specific organization. I'm however aware that you were editing under this name for 2 years, and perhaps nobody raised a concern, but let me know if you won't mind to change a username since its very confusing for me and many others. Thanks.--Biografer (talk) 18:21, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

@Biografer: Thank you for pointing it out. According to the article, however, the Free Trade Area of the Americas is a proposed trade agreement, not an organization. - ZLEA Talk\Contribs 18:31, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
Hmmm, what does FTAA have to do with your username?--Biografer (talk) 18:37, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
The french abbreviation is ZLÉA. - ZLEA Talk\Contribs 18:39, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
Ah, ok. Not that I demand on the username change, but I don't think it will be only me who will see a problem with it in a near future. And yes, while it is maybe not an organization, it still might fall into username violation. For example, you might be a person who proposed the agreement, that automatically will result in COI. :(--Biografer (talk) 18:48, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
I understand what you're trying to say, but my username does have something to do with me, if it's changed, it will most likely be minor. - ZLEA Talk\Contribs 19:03, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

Talk to us about talking

Trizek (WMF) 15:08, 21 February 2019 (UTC)

Is the name that is there the correct one? It's not, according to this page, but maybe I misunderstood. I am concerned, though, that no reference is provided, so people can basically say what they want. ubiquity (talk) 21:06, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

I'm sorry if what I reverted was not vandalism. If you can source the name, there should be no more confusion in the future. - ZLEA Talk\Contribs 21:15, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

Please participate to the talk pages consultation

Hello

Our team at the Wikimedia Foundation is working on a project to improve the ease-of-use and productivity of wiki talk pages. As a Teahouse host, I can imagine you’ve run into challenges explaining talk pages to first-time participants.

We want all contributors to be able to talk to each other on the wikis – to ask questions, to resolve differences, to organize projects and to make decisions. Communication is essential for the depth and quality of our content, and the health of our communities. We're currently leading a global consultation on how to improve talk pages, and we're looking for people that can report on their experiences using (or helping other people to use) wiki talk pages. We'd like to invite you to participate in the consultation, and invite new users to join too.

We thank you in advance for your participation and your help.

Pending changes reviewer granted

Hello. Your account has been granted the "pending changes reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on pages protected by pending changes. The list of articles awaiting review is located at Special:PendingChanges, while the list of articles that have pending changes protection turned on is located at Special:StablePages.

Being granted reviewer rights neither grants you status nor changes how you can edit articles. If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.

Half dime

I suggest the half dime should not be lumped in with the Nickel, in the same way that the three-cent nickel and the three-cent silver are not lumped together, and neither are the regular dollar coin and the gold dollar. In fact, the half dime is usually listed as an odd denomination/obsolete coin. --Enterlousy (talk) 20:45, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

Ok, thanks. - ZLEA Talk\Contribs 20:51, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

Obsolete denominations

I personally would keep the two-cent billon, three-cent bronze, stella, and half union in for the same logic that the 100,000 dollar bill is listed. Both those pattern coins and the $100,000 bill were never actually released for circulation, the only difference is that the $100,000 bill is currently illegal to own. --Enterlousy (talk) 04:39, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

Enterlousy A better idea would be to include them in a Cancelled denominations of the US dollar page. - ZLEA Talk\Contribs 13:36, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
Good idea. --Enterlousy (talk) 15:59, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
I've started the page in my sandbox at User:ZLEA/sandbox/Cancelled denominations of United States currency. - ZLEA Talk\Contribs 16:03, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
I see that you already started the page, nevermind. - ZLEA Talk\Contribs 16:06, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

Half union

Should the Panama Pacific Exposition version of the half union be added into the table in Obsolete denominations of United States currency? --Enterlousy (talk) 16:12, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

No, that coin was not meant for circulation, and even today, US commemorative coins are minted in otherwise obsolete denominations of $5 and $10. - ZLEA Talk\Contribs 16:43, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

18:05, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

Appreciate your work on pattern coins/Cancelled denominations of United States currency! Enterlousy (talk) 15:26, 26 March 2019 (UTC)

Vandalism

ZLEA, you have signed as vandalism an article edition made by me, the reencarnation of president Kennedy.

If you are near Spain, Zaragoza, you can invite me to a children burger king menu and talk directly about the article and the fact.

With love...

Reincarnation is not accepted by a majority of the general public, nor is it scientifically proven. Wikipedia is written from a neutral point of view, and is religion neutral. - ZLEA T\C 18:08, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

I had done this because I thought that perhaps you had changed the coloring based on metalic content of the coin - since the coin is predominately gold (85%), I had assumed that the background coloring should be the same as for the other gold coins.

In any event, I liked the identification of the gold coins in the table by the use of a yellow background. I had spend a few weeks earlier this year 'fixing' this page - basically reformatting the table to be consistent. I did not make a lot of content changes, except if I saw some errors, or omissions, but even then I am sure that I did not get everything.

I am a coin collector, since 1968 when I started at 10 years old. I liked this page (Modern US Commemorative coins) since that is one of my main areas of concentration with my collection and I liked the Wikipedia article sine it had most of the info I relied on.

In any case, I did not want to 're-change' the background color - when I was 'fixing' the table formatting, I had not even considered using background colors as an option to make perusing the table easier - I thought the idea was very good and had assumed that the specific coloring on that coin was an oversight/mistake.

Hopefully I got this to you properly - my first attempt at contacting an author.

I see that you are an "aviation buff" (I think). I am retired from US government service - all 36 years with the FAA, but not in an operations/air traffic capacity.

Thank you.

Esad58 I see what you are saying about differentiating compositions with colored templates, but that is not what the templates are meant for. The templates are used to show what color the coin actually is, for example, some cupronickel coins are grey or silver in color, although they are mostly copper, so Template:Coin-silver-color is used. In the case of the Breast Cancer Awareness half eagle, while it still is mostly gold, it has a pinkish-brown color, and Template:Coin-copper-color would more suitable for the coin. According to your philosophy for color template use, the modern dime, quarter, and half dollar should be given a copper color, as they are all mostly copper. - ZLEA T\C 17:29, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

apologies.....

hey ZLEA - sorry for starting a new topic, I'm not real fluent with wiki meta stuff - couldn't see how to reply. Anyway, I agree with your template coloring philosophy - I just wasn't aware that there was a template available - like I said, I'm not real fluent. And I really didn't think thru the coin composition being the basis for the coloring. In any event, I really do like the background coloring differentiation. Now that I know that there is a template, I will use that to continue building on the commemorative coins tables. I'm a cut/copy/paste kind of person, so at least the tables going forward will be consistent.

thank! Ernie Esad58 (talk) 18:05, 31 March 2019 (UTC) (hopefully I signed my post properly lol)

No worries, and I agree that the pink color on the table does not accurately represent the true coin color. - ZLEA T\C 18:22, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

Another Believer Your welcome. I'm not sure if you plan on creating stubs for all US commemoratives, but if you do, the 2018 WWI dollar coin article should probably cover the commemorative medals that were issued commemorating the branches of the military that were active during the conflict. - ZLEA T\C 21:39, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

Inclusion of "medals" in Modern United States commemorative coins article

I see that medals are now being included in the "Modern United States commemorative coins" article. For example, the World War I Centennial medals for 2018, among others. By definition, this article is for US commemorative coins - a coin having a face value - medals do not. The mint has been issuing medals for many years now, mostly bronze (I had purchased a dozen or so a few years back but decided not to collect these). WHile these medals do commemorate things, people, events, they should not be part of this coins page, but probably should be in a separate article dedicated to medals only.

Hope this makes sense. Thank you.

Ernie Esad58 (talk) 03:50, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

Esad58 That is a good idea, however, as you will see at the US Mint's official website, most of the medals issued by the mint are Congressional medals. The First Spouse medals are already covered in Presidential $1 Coin Program. I think that the best way to approach inclusion of medals is to have a separate article for Congressional medals, and include others in Early United States commemorative coins and Modern United States commemorative coins. If you feel that medals should not be included in a coin article, perhaps the articles could be moved to Early/Modern United States commemorative coins and medals. - ZLEA T\C 11:20, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

re: Inclusion of "medals" in Modern United States commemorative coins article

Hey. Sorry, I couldn't figure out how to reply to your reply. Anyway, I like your suggestion about renaming the article to "Modern United States commemorative coins and medals" - probably a lot easier than having separate articles. Maybe instead of separating out all the Congressional medals from what the mint calls "list medals", include all of them in the article, but keep the coins separate from the medals. Thanks again.

Ernie Esad58 (talk) 02:00, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

Esad58 The problem with adding a lot of commemorative medals is that each one adds length to the article, which already has a lot of length after my recent table restructure and addition of non-traditional commemorative coins and medals. I am currently thinking of ways to solve the problem, and thehe best solution I can think of is to split the article by decade. If we do this, then there would be plenty of space to include Congressional medals.
Your thoughts? - ZLEA T\C 13:08, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
I was about to start adding the Congressional medals to the lists in my sandbox, but found that all of them are on sale to this day. This poses a problem as the tables are currently structured for coins/medals that are available for a limited time. As there are no plans to end sales of any of the Congressional medals, the mintage figures may never be known.
There may be a work-around for this problem, though. If the tables are re-structured to include the dates that the coins/medals became available, the mintage could remain blank or N/A without giving the appearance if being incomplete. - ZLEA T\C 14:16, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

Your editnotice and signature user pages

Hi ZLEA! I was looking at some edit filter logs and I noticed that an IP had added vandalism to some of your user pages (such as the pages I listed in the title). The IP user even created a user page in your user space (it was here) that I deleted per G3. I went ahead and added indefinite edit and move semi-protection to both of these pages in order to stop any future vandalism like this. I didn't see any recent vandalism to your main user page, so I left it be. If you'd like me to add protection to it, just respond and let me know (please make sure to ping me in your reply) and I'll be happy to do so. I figured I'd leave you a message and let you know about the protection I added to those pages. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:48, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

Oshwah Thanks for letting me know. I'm not too worried about my main userpage. However, I believe that User:ZLEA/Userboxes and User:ZLEA/Wikiproject userboxes, which I use as templates on my main userpage, are more susceptible to vandalism. I revert any edits to those pages that were not done by me (unless the edits fix a broken userbox or are reverts of vandalism). - ZLEA T\C 13:54, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
I've applied semi-protection to both of those userbox pages for you. You shouldn't have any more trouble with vandalism on either one of them, but if you do - let me know and I'll be happy to take care of it. ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:57, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

Vandalism?

Hello. I noticed the level 4 vandalism template you left for 43.248.55.145 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). I don't think that these changes fit the Wikipedia definition of vandalism at all. It's curious, as the same IP received an accidental level 4 warning for some completely acceptable edits only yesterday. Might this be a mistake, too? BlackcurrantTea (talk) 09:07, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

BlackcurrantTea You might be right, it might not be vandalism. The reason I reverted and warned them is because the article is on my watchlist and the edit appeared to be malicious. I wasn't sure, though, so I looked at the IP's talk page and found this. - ZLEA T\C 11:58, 2 June 2019 (UTC)
There's that, yes. But I'd say it merits a {{Uw-columns}}, {{Uw-disruptive2}} or {{Uw-disruptive3}}, and save the level 4 warnings for things like replacing sections of a BLP with swear words. (Perhaps I'm too lenient.) I'd put that particular change and many of their other edits I looked at in the fidgety gnome category: not terribly important, not very noticeable, and the editor may have had a few too many cups of coffee. Based on the edits I looked at, though, I'd say they're WP:HERE, and mean well. BlackcurrantTea (talk) 12:57, 2 June 2019 (UTC)
BlackcurrantTea You're probably right, I've been known to revert good faith edits thinking they were vandalism. - ZLEA T\C 13:13, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

US Commemorative Coins Articles

Hi @ZLEA:

I am interested in learning your work about commemorative coins. I have two questions for you:

1. How do you determine 1954 vs 1980 to be the split point of "Early" and "Modern". I ask this because I think it's interesting and important, but I like to learn your thinking process. What I would guess is the dissolution of Brettonwood System happens in the 70s marks the different meaning of US dollars (anchored to the metal gold) before and after(not anchored to the metal gold)~. Is that the main reason?

2. Why there is a gap between 1954 and 1980?

Thank you! Xinbenlv (talk) 23:34, 5 June 2019 (UTC)

Xinbenlv, president Eisenhower had ended the US Mint's commemorative coin program in 1954 for several reasons, with the most important being lack of interest from coin collectors, which meant that the mint was losing money. The program was continued in 1982, with no "traditional" commemoratives being issued in between (coins commemorating the bicentennial of the United States were produced in 1975 and 1976, but these are not considered traditional commemoratives as they were released into circulation).
The removal of the gold standard had nothing to do with the end of the early series or the start of the new series. However, it did allow for gold commemoratives to be minted again. The mintage of gold commemorative coins was prohibited after president Roosevelt ordered the recall of federal gold in 1933. This order was reversed in 1974 with the passage of Pub. L. 93–373. - ZLEA T\C 00:26, 6 June 2019 (UTC)
@ZLEA: that's good to know. Since you mentioned in the Modern article that 1982 resumes mintage of commemorative coin, maybe it's also a good idea to mention in the "Early" article the fact that US ceased to mintage commemorative coin in 1954, in the "Early" article so readers could better understand the end of an era? Xinbenlv (talk) 00:31, 6 June 2019 (UTC)
Xinbenlv That is a good idea, but when I split both the early and modern articles by decade, there will be no need, as the new articles will be lists. The main article will be United States commemorative coin, which will contain all that information.
The new lists are in my sandbox at User:ZLEA/sandbox/List of United States commemorative coins and medals (1800s), (1900s), (1910s), (1920s), (1930s), (1940s), (1950s), (1970s), (1980s), (1990s), (2000s), (2010s), (2020s). - ZLEA T\C 00:46, 6 June 2019 (UTC)

US commemorative coin templates and articles

Wow. What a great job of putting these together. Came to heap thanks on you, and to mention I've added the autocollapse code on the templates, have put all of them on United States commemorative coins, and that the 1970s-1980s template isn't linked. These templates provide a nice roadmap and the amount of work that went into the articles deserves a standing ovation. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 01:59, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

I suggest renaming the 2000 dollar coin mule error article to 2000 Sacagawea dollar – Washington quarter dollar mule (similar to the name used in this source). I find the current title confusing, as it appears to describe a coin with a denomination of 2000 dollars. —BarrelProof (talk) 19:46, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

Done Although I changed the en dash to a standard dash as the en dash is not found on most english keyboards. - ZLEA T\C 20:23, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
Although many people aren't so familiar with it, Wikipedia's Manual of Style prescribes the WP:ENDASH when appropriate. A redirect can be used from the form with a hyphen, but a hyphen seems incorrect to me. I also changed "quarter dollar" to "quarter" to be more concise. I also edited a related template and a related article. I hope you don't mind these changes – I understand that your opinion on some of this probably differs from mine. —BarrelProof (talk) 20:29, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

Washington quarters

I saw that you did not like my change of Template:Coinage (United States) to describe the newer quarters series as different obverse designs of Washington quarters (although that is how they are described in that article). But would you mind if I changed the date range of Washington quarters from "1932–1998" to "1932–present"? The article about them says that the current quarters are Washington quarters, which matches the common sense of anyone who looks at them. —BarrelProof (talk) 23:04, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

BarrelProof Something you might want to think about is that if all Washington quarter reverse series' are placed into parentheses, half of the links to quarter articles would be in parentheses. In 2 years, the current program will end, and the mint will adopt a new design (that is if a new commemorative program isn't launched). I would suggest changing the "Washington quarter" link label to "Washington Eagle-reverse quarter" (or something similar) with the current date range. - ZLEA T\C 23:37, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! MusikAnimal talk 00:46, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

Editing News #1—July 2019

Did you know?

Did you know that you can use the visual editor on a mobile device?

Every article has a pencil icon at the top. Tap on the pencil icon to start editing.

Edit Cards

Toolbar with menu opened

This is what the new Edit Cards for editing links in the mobile visual editor look like. You can try the prototype here: 📲 Try Edit Cards.

Welcome back to the Editing newsletter.

Since the last newsletter, the team has released two new features for the mobile visual editor and has started developing three more. All of this work is part of the team's goal to make editing on mobile web simpler.

Before talking about the team's recent releases, we have a question for you:

Are you willing to try a new way to add and change links?

If you are interested, we would value your input! You can try this new link tool in the mobile visual editor on a separate wiki.

Follow these instructions and share your experience:

📲 Try Edit Cards.

Recent releases

The mobile visual editor is a simpler editing tool, for smartphones and tablets using the mobile site. The Editing team has recently launched two new features to improve the mobile visual editor:

  1. Section editing
    • The purpose is to help contributors focus on their edits.
    • The team studied this with an A/B test. This test showed that contributors who could use section editing were 1% more likely to publish the edits they started than people with only full-page editing.
  2. Loading overlay
    • The purpose is to smooth the transition between reading and editing.

Section editing and the new loading overlay are now available to everyone using the mobile visual editor.

New and active projects

This is a list of our most active projects. Watch these pages to learn about project updates and to share your input on new designs, prototypes and research findings.

  • Edit cards: This is a clearer way to add and edit links, citations, images, templates, etc. in articles. You can try this feature now. Go here to see how: 📲Try Edit Cards.
  • Mobile toolbar refresh: This project will learn if contributors are more successful when the editing tools are easier to recognize.
  • Mobile visual editor availability: This A/B test asks: Are newer contributors more successful if they use the mobile visual editor? We are collaborating with 20 Wikipedias to answer this question.
  • Usability improvements: This project will make the mobile visual editor easier to use.  The goal is to let contributors stay focused on editing and to feel more confident in the editing tools.

Looking ahead

  • Wikimania: Several members of the Editing Team will be attending Wikimania in August 2019. They will lead a session about mobile editing in the Community Growth space. Talk to them about how editing can be improved.
  • Talk Pages: In the coming months, the Editing Team will begin improving talk pages and communication on the wikis.

Learning more

The VisualEditor on mobile is a good place to learn more about the projects we are working on. The team wants to talk with you about anything related to editing. If you have something to say or ask, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

Miscellaneous

  • Following a research project on masking IP addresses, the Foundation is starting a new project to improve the privacy of IP editors. The result of this project may significantly change administrative and counter-vandalism workflows. The project is in the very early stages of discussions and there is no concrete plan yet. Admins and the broader community are encouraged to leave feedback on the talk page.
  • The new page reviewer right is bundled with the admin tool set. Many admins regularly help out at Special:NewPagesFeed, but they may not be aware of improvements, changes, and new tools for the Curation system. Stay up to date by subscribing here to the NPP newsletter that appears every two months, and/or putting the reviewers' talk page on your watchlist.

Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.

Thank you for your informative new article on the United States Mint Set. I wonder if the article should actually be titled "United States Uncirculated Coin Set" because that seems to be the most commonly used name in recent years, though I am not an expert in this matter.

Nimitz Incident

Hi ZLEA. You left a message on an anonymous page about USS Nimitz UFO incident. I'm a longtime user who was editing anonymously, and I did in fact explain my edit in the talk page, but Rob110178 (sigmabot III) reverted both the edit and the explanation. I've repeated both as myself. DJ Clayworth (talk) 14:36, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

DJ Clayworth Thank you for letting me know. To prevent situations like this in the future, I recommend that you leave an edit summary for all non-minor edits. - ZLEA T\C 17:27, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
I kind of assumed that explaining in the talk page would be enough. But I'll try to leave an edit summary too. DJ Clayworth (talk) 15:59, 22 August 2019 (UTC)
DJ Clayworth In that case, you should leave a link to the talk page revision in which you explain the edit you are about to make. Your edit summary should look something like "See [link to revision]". - ZLEA T\C 19:20, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

An infobox for historical currencies

Could you purpose for the creation of an infobox for historical currencies to the WikiProject Numismatics? It already exists on many other Wikipedia's and it would allow for more parameters to be created for obsolete currencies which the current currency infobox doesn't provide for. --Donald Trung (talk) 08:33, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Donald Trung That's a great idea, I will look into it when I have the time. Could you provide an example of an article on another Wikipedia that uses a historical currency infobox? - ZLEA T\C 12:49, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
My bad, I just looked at "w:nl:Vietnamese văn" and "w:nl:Nederlandse gulden" and they use the standard infobox for all currencies. However, the Dutch infobox has way more parameters for historical currencies such as preceding and succeeding currencies (something which is currently often done at the bottom of pages here, but could be used in the main "top infobox"). Plus the current infobox has a date of introduction but no parameter for a date of abolition. I think that the lack of these parameters is the main reason why many historical currencies don't have infoboxes. And those that do like "Reichsmark" or "Soviet ruble" don't show reasons for their abolition or the exact date.
I think that a potential historical infobox currency should have all the same parameters or that the existing infobox should have these added to it. --Donald Trung (talk) 12:57, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
Donald Trung I will work on adding the parameters in template's sandbox. - ZLEA T\C 13:11, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
Actually, those parameters already exist as "replaced", "replaced by", "Date of withdrawal". - ZLEA T\C 13:17, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
Donald Trung I've added those parameters to the Reichsmark article. - ZLEA T\C 13:32, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, it's odd that it is so rarely used. Have a nice weekend. --Donald Trung (talk) 14:18, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
It's not the first time I've discovered "lost" parameters in infoboxes. - ZLEA T\C 14:21, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Editing News #2 – Mobile editing and talk pages – October 2019

Read this in another languageSubscription list for this multilingual newsletter

Inside this newsletter, the Editing team talks about their work on the mobile visual editor, on the new talk pages project, and at Wikimania 2019.

Help

What talk page interactions do you remember? Is it a story about how someone helped you to learn something new? Is it a story about how someone helped you get involved in a group? Something else? Whatever your story is, we want to hear it!

Please tell us a story about how you used a talk page. Please share a link to a memorable discussion, or describe it on the talk page for this project. The team would value your examples. These examples will help everyone develop a shared understanding of what this project should support and encourage.

Talk Pages

The Talk Pages Consultation was a global consultation to define better tools for wiki communication. From February through June 2019, more than 500 volunteers on 20 wikis, across 15 languages and multiple projects, came together with members of the Foundation to create a product direction for a set of discussion tools. The Phase 2 Report of the Talk Page Consultation was published in August. It summarizes the product direction the team has started to work on, which you can read more about here: Talk Page Project project page.

The team needs and wants your help at this early stage. They are starting to develop the first idea. Please add your name to the "Getting involved" section of the project page, if you would like to hear about opportunities to participate.

Mobile visual editor

The Editing team is trying to make it simpler to edit on mobile devices. The team is changing the visual editor on mobile. If you have something to say about editing on a mobile device, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

What happens when you click on a link. The new Edit Card is bigger and has more options for editing links.
The editing toolbar is changing in the mobile visual editor. The old system had two different toolbars. Now, all the buttons are together. Tell the team what you think about the new toolbar.
  • In September, the Editing team updated the mobile visual editor's editing toolbar. Anyone could see these changes in the mobile visual editor.
    • One toolbar: All of the editing tools are located in one toolbar. Previously, the toolbar changed when you clicked on different things.
    • New navigation: The buttons for moving forward and backward in the edit flow have changed.
    • Seamless switching: an improved workflow for switching between the visual and wikitext modes.
  • Feedback: You can try the refreshed toolbar by opening the mobile VisualEditor on a smartphone. Please post your feedback on the Toolbar feedback talk page.

Wikimania

The Editing Team attended Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. They led a session on the mobile visual editor and a session on the new talk pages project. They tested two new features in the mobile visual editor with contributors. You can read more about what the team did and learned in the team's report on Wikimania 2019.

Looking ahead

  • Talk Pages Project: The team is thinking about the first set of proposed changes. The team will be working with a few communities to pilot those changes. The best way to stay informed is by adding your username to the list on the project page: Getting involved.
  • Testing the mobile visual editor as the default: The Editing team plans to post results before the end of the calendar year. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: VisualEditor as mobile default project page.

2019 US Banknote Contest

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

US Banknote Contest

Thanks for your hard work organizing the US Banknote Contest. I look over the contest rules and it doesn't mention the laws regarding the copying of US currency outlined in the Counterfeit Detection Act of 1992. I'm just concerned you're going to get a lot of people scanning US currency and uploading it to the Commons, which I don't believe is legal. Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 00:04, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

Magnolia677 Thanks for your concern, but uploading scans of US banknotes is perfectly legal as the intent is not fraudulent. See c:Template:PD-USGov-money for more information. - ZLEA T\C 13:44, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
My understanding is it's "perfectly legal" so long as the person scanning the currency abides by the conditions listed in the template. However, these conditions weren't listed on the contest page. Magnolia677 (talk) 17:25, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
Magnolia677 I'm not sure they need to be, as uploading banknote images to Commons is not fraudulent. Additionally, the three conditions listed in the template only apply to printed copies of banknotes, not digital scans. - ZLEA T\C 17:39, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

/* A-36A Mustang (NA-97) */

ZLEA?

Is this how I communicate with you.

I found your message about the A-36A Mustang being called the "Apache," which it was NEVER called by anyone, except for post-WWII writers who knew NOTHING about history of the whole "Mustang Family" that started with NA-73X and ended with the P-51H (although it's "out of alphabetical order," this also includes the P-51K.

I have multiple documents that beyond ANY shadow of a doubt, are on "my side" (it's not really my side...it's the side of actual history).

I read your bio and by 2002, I was already a pilot and had been a warbird enthusiast, photographer and writer of a number of warbird articles on AeroNews-dot-Net (ANN).

I have a recent A-36A article at www.thehangardeck.com that supported my A-36A stance, as far as the name. It came out in April. Strangely enough, by the time it came out, the Historical Archivist at Boeing, Michael Lombardi (who'd sent me documents on other aspects of the whole "Mustang Family," on other occasions) sent me two scans, neither of which I needed to prove my point, but will ABSOLUTELY "nail-down" the official name for the A-36A as "MUSTANG."

I will be most happy to supply you with both North American Aviation documentation and USAAF documentation (at least two document scan from each of them).

I can also help show how the only "Apache" that ever existed in the NAA "Mustang Family" of aircraft was on the NA-91 - the aircraft with the two 20 mm cannons in each wing. It was called "Apache" from the latter part of 1941 until July 13, 1942 (see, I have proof of an exact date), when it, and EVERY NAA aircraft that looked like a P-51 Mustang fighter was to be named "Mustang." That date, you'll note, is BEFORE the first A-36A was built. Will that do?

I even convinced the National Museum of the U. S. Air Force in Dayton, OH to change their signage for the A-36A on display there. Look it up on their website. They also changed their web pages on the A-36A. The DO mention that it has been called "Apache" (only post-War) and "Invader" (that nickname was ACTUALLY used by the pilots & groundcrew of the A-36As flown by the 27th Fighter-Bomber Group in North Africa in WWII...they even petitioned NAA and the USAAF to have the name officially changed to "Invader," but we both know that this name was already given to Douglas' A-26 Light-Medium Bomber/Attack Aircraft, so, naturally, they were turned down. Mustang is what it was from day one until the last one flew operations in WWII.

Thank you.

Mustangtmg You don't need to prove to me that the A-36 was nicknamed "Mustang" and not "Apache". However, most sources state that you are incorrect. You will need to cite whatever sources you have that "prove" that ALL the other sources are incorrect. - ZLEA T\C 16:00, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

ZLEA...

This Wikipedia "Talk" page is confusing at best...

Can you please email me at mustangtmg@yahoo.com

I can function better in an email format.

I promise to be respectful, which goes without saying.

I do NOT understand how this "messaging" or "talking" (whatEVER) works.

Apparently, unless I'm misunderstanding what you wrote on 12 Nov 2019, you're saying that even though I can prove BEYOND A SHADOW OF A DOUBT, that the A-36A was never, EVER called "Apache" that since most sources say that it is "Apache," that you, and I guess Wikipedia, have NO desire to be correct. If this the case, then why does it even exist?

I apparently know my "Mustangology" better than most folks out there who purport to be "experts." I would like to try to communicate with you via email, because honestly, this function of Wikipedia is clunkier than the old "Message Boards" that we had 20 years before you were even born.

You have nothing to fear by emailing me, or looking me up on Facebook. You'll find that I'm a well-respected person, having retired from the practice of Hospital Pharmacy after over 45 years and have been a WWII aviation aficionado since the middle 1950s...that's probably before your parents were born.

So email me at mustangtmg@yahoo.com (I've had that email address since LAST Century).

I'll look for something from you on my email and if I get nothing, I'll work my way back to this "wonky" Talk thing and see if you've communicated with me that way.

We need to get the TRUTH out there, and just because 99 out of 100 folks say "Apache" to one who says "Mustang," that does NOT make the 99 correct, does it?

And we all agree that "Invader" was an unofficial nickname given to the A-36A Mustangs that they flew/maintained in the Italian Campaign of WWII, but that was a "field" name and was official only for the Douglas A-26 Invader, a plane that made its first flight while the A-36A was being designed, and a few months before the first A-36A even came out of the NAA factory. Check it out, then explain your intransigence on agreeing on the name. I had to learn the correct name for the A-36A (BTW, that was the only model ever built and there was no aircraft designated as an "XA-36" prototype ... the kinda-sorta prototype was an NA-83, RAF Serial Number "AM118" that the dive brakes, strengthened wing, pylons for bombs or external fuel tanks, plumbing for the external fuel tanks, etc) too, because I thought it was "Apache" for years, then "Invader," and then I started my own research on it and for sure it is and always WAS "Mustang."

Thanks and have a good day.

Mustangtmg I suggest you read this guide on talk pages, especially this section, before you reply. I know that talk pages can be confusing to new users, but you will get the hang of it eventually. I cannot email you for reasons I cannot disclose, so this is the only way I can get in touch with you.
Unfortunately, determining what version of history is "correct" on Wikipedia is done by establishing consensus. This is due to the fact that multiple sources exist that contradict each other, and it is the Wikipedia community's job do determine which version is most likely correct based on the sources provided. Currently, consensus is that the name of the A-36 was "Apache" based on the sources available to us.
Something I would like to point out is that your "proof" appears to be original research, which, unfortunately, is not accepted as a reliable source. If I am wrong, and you have a source/sources that specifically state that the official name of the A-36 was in fact "Mustang" and not "Apache", you may bring it up at Talk:North American A-36 Apache and request that the A-36 page be moved. Otherwise, it may be better to publish a book on the A-36 based on your knowledge, and in the future, your book could be used as a source in the article.
Wikipedians do desire to be correct, but that is not always easy as ANYONE can claim to be an expert. I agree, if 99% of people make the same mistake, it is still a mistake. However, the mistake cannot be corrected without reliable/irrefutable proof that it is a mistake. - ZLEA T\C 18:04, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

Good day or Good night, ZLEA.

I guess that by telling you,"I give up," it looks like I feel defeated. WRONG! I feel vindicated. Indeed, anywhere on the Internet in late 2019 that is so arcane as to be unusable by normal people, can just sit there and stew in its ignorance (and I mean "ignorance" in its actual definition...just as if I said, "I am ignorant of the governmental system of Fiji or New Guinea," that does not mean that I'm dumb or uneducated - BTW, I'm neither - it means that I do NOT understand the ins-and-outs of something. Not understanding a foreign nation's way of governing itself is not the issue here ... I will just "back out" of the A-36A discussion and let the folks who trust what they read in Wikipedia as being "the Gospel truth," be wrong on this point.

I'm outta here. Mustangtmg (talk) 01:28, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!
