Coordinator Nomination

[edit]

Just a friendly reminder that this is the deadline day for nomination statements - unless you post one a day or so late as I have done in the past two years. You are no doubt aware of this but as I see no statement from you yet I am getting anxious about the absence of a statement from you. Thus, I add this note. Donner60 (talk) 10:03, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the timely reminder!!! I have posted a nomination statement today. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:42, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I left a note for Matarisvan. He has not been online since then. It appears that he became somewhat inactive rather abruptly over the past several weeks. He had only 3 edits in August and 11 this month, all but two on September 11. I see no note on his user page or talk page. But we have all seen some users' activity levels drop entirely or almost entirely over a long period without much if any explanation from them. I suppose, if he doesn't file even a late statement, he could be co-opted if he returns to active use and wants to still be a coordinator. As far as I can tell, he has made good contributions to the project over the last year. Donner60 (talk) 23:18, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
He has made no reply to my talk page but has posted a "no" in the standing for re-election table on the coordinator election page. Donner60 (talk) 00:49, 17 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I updated the coordinator election page. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 01:09, 17 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Donner60 and @Hawkeye7: Hi guys, I enrolled for my Masters program in August, and I had not expected it would be so consuming of my time and energy. I have resumed editing now, and my focus is on updating WPMH FAs to current standards (mostly sfn refs) and adding these FAs to new Featured Topics. I will try to join the November Drive, but I cannot commit until I achieve some of the above goals. Also, I will surely put up my candidacy for the next coordinator election. Also, if there is a possibility of being co-opted as Donner60 posted above, I would like to try. Cheers Matarisvan (talk) 12:41, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

About cleaning up article history templates

[edit]

Hey Hawkeye7! I've noticed that FACBot folds relevant talk page banners into {{Article history}} when it updates them. I feel like this functionality would also be very useful to have as a script that editors can run browser-side (banner blindness can be a real issue on some talk pages). I know very little JavaScript and no Perl, so would creating this script be something you're interested in? If not, I would appreciate it if you could point me to the relevant code you wrote for FACBot so I can try my hand at adapting it. Let me know what you think! TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 19:25, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You can clone the code with git from https://gitlab.wikimedia.org/toolforge-repos/milhistbot.git. The relevant Perl module is in the MilHist/ArticleHistory.pm module. However, it was written to run as part of a bot, rather than from the browser-side. We would need to think about how to implement it. It could be completely written in Javascript, which would be ideal, but neither of us has that much Javascript knowledge (which is why I write the bots in Perl and C#). What I could do is provide it as a web service that implements it, and then call it from Javascript. That would be much simpler. Your thoughts appreciated. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:25, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies for the delay, it's a busy week for me. Thanks for directing me to the relevant code. Please don't feel any obligation to work on this, by the way; it's not exactly a high priority. If there are other things you would rather get to, I'll workshop a solution on my own time. However, if you think it wouldn't be too much trouble, the external service you mentioned would also be greatly appreciated! If the wikitext is being processed by an external service, a script might not even be needed as long as it provides the result to be copied and pasted. I suppose it comes down to whatever is easier: a script or making a GUI on Toolforge. TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 04:47, 28 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you today for Otto Hahn, about Otto Hahn "the German chemist who was awarded the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of nuclear fission. Today Hahn is something of a divisive figure. A century ago, there was much less of a distinction between chemistry and physics. Hahn was involved early in the chemistry of radioactive substances. Their presence could be detected from their radioactivity, and their unique half lives. Unfortunately, most of the new elements he discovered turned out to be isotopes, a concept that had not been invented when he began. He also had to deal with a lot of disapproval from more traditional chemists, for whom chemistry involved substances you could see, and smell and taste. Early on he formed a professional relationship with a physicist, Lise Meitner. Among his generation, he was regarded as progressive in his attitudes towards women, even a feminist. But women like Meitner still considered him a male chauvinist pig, and their historians have been much less reticent about publicly calling him one. After World War II, his cause was to resurrect the reputation of German science, which had been tarnished (to say the least) in the Nazi period. In this role, he sought publicity and downplayed uncomfortable truths."! - I have a FAC open again, in case of interest. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:56, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Missing detail

[edit]

Here, when you were asked to provide more information about the 1951 shooting of Otto Hahn, you did so, but did not mention where the information came from.

Could you please remedy this omission? Thank you. DS (talk) 16:26, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It is covered by footnote 163. " One evening in October 1951, as he was opening the door of his house, he was shot in the back by a man described as a disgruntled inventor, who wished to draw attention to the neglect of his ideas by established scientists." Hawkeye7 (discuss) 19:33, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I followed the reference but mistook the abstract for the full article. Might be useful to include an {rp} in your references to indicate page number? DS (talk) 20:20, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It already says "Spence, pp. 300-301". Hawkeye7 (discuss) 22:17, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Project POSTAR was the first space experiment created entirely by members of the Boy Scouts of America. On September 12, 1992, Space Shuttle Endeavour mission STS-47 carried 10 Get Away Special (GAS) canisters. Amongst these GAS cansisters was G-102 sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America's Exploring Division in cooperation with the TRW Systems Integration Group, Fairfax, Virginia. The project was named Project POSTAR. (The name was a combination of the words "Post" and "Star").

Space Shuttle Enterprise

The Space Shuttle Enterprise (OV-101) was the first orbiter built in the Space Shuttle program. Designed for atmospheric test flights, it lacked both engines and a heat shield, making it unable to go to space. Rolled out on 17 September 1976, it was initially named Constitution, but was renamed following a large letter-writing campaign from Trekkies. Unlike its eponym, the USS Enterprise from the original Star Trek series, OV-101 never achieved spaceflight; originally intended to be refitted to become the second space-rated orbiter after Columbia, changes to the design of the Space Shuttle made it both simpler and cheaper to instead construct a new shuttle, Challenger, around a test article. It was later considered for refitting following the Challenger disaster, but it was instead decided to build a replacement, Endeavour, out of spare parts from the construction of Discovery and Atlantis.

Enterprise flew a total of five times, from 12 August to 26 October, 1977. It was then flown to Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, where it was placed into the Saturn V dynamic test stand for the Mated Vertical Ground Vibration Testing, in order to test the Space Shuttle's launch stack. It was then used for a variety of fit checks at Kennedy Space Center and Vandenberg Air Force Base, between which it toured Europe and North America, including a showing at the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition. It was then moved to the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum on 18 November 1985. It was then moved to its present location aboard the USS Intrepid museum ship on 12 December 2011.

FACbot talk page notifications

[edit]

Hi -- I know you've been updating FACbot; this edit is an error. Easy to revert, but I thought you'd want to be aware. It doesn't seem to have done it to any other subpages of mine for some reason. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 01:40, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I take it that you mean that it refers to you as "Mike Christie/Reference library"? I will investigate... The Bot had trouble with this article; it wasn't expecting that an article would get all the way to featured without being tagged by a single project. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 01:48, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It did correctly notify me on my talk page, but it also notified me on this subpage -- which is linked in my signature, and I now realize that's probably why it posted there. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 02:05, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that is why. It goes through the nominators line looking for users. It determines that a link refers to a user if it is refers to the User namespace. Unfortunately, that includes your library subpage. (It skipped your talk page and contributions because they were not in the User namespace.) So I am going to tell it to ignore links that include a slash. That should resolve the problem. My apologies. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 02:58, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No need to apologize. I had similar problems with ChristieBot in handling GA notifications and there are still some edge cases that I don't think it deals with correctly. Anyway, thanks for fixing it. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 03:08, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

FACBot

[edit]

Hi. Something seems amiss with the bot, I think. Look at Talk:Frank Hague, see how you can see the "article milestones" and "identified" link the the FAC nomination page?

You can't see them on the recently promoted Talk:Lope Martín and Talk:Assassination of Lord Mountbatten; it just shows that they're FA. Just thought I'd let you know. MisawaSakura (talk) 20:36, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. The Bot had an issue with pages lacking an ArticleHistory template. The problem has been resolved, and I have updated these two pages. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 23:38, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! MisawaSakura (talk) 23:44, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question about article class rating

[edit]

Hi Hawkeye7. According to the talk page of the Milhist bot, you're its owner. I had a question. In 2021, the bot rated the article Battōtai (song) as start-class, saying it didn't meet the "Coverage and accuracy" criterion. Do you know what that criterion is, and how I can see if the page now meets that? Best wishes, Tenchi irezaru chouteki zo (talk) 13:50, 31 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The Bot uses Liftwing to determine the "Coverage and accuracy" criterion. So it is based on whether it looks like a B class article. I ran it again, and Liftwing thinks the current version looks like a C class article. Sometimes, articles are small by their nature. If you disagree with a bot assessment, you can take an article to Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Requests and a human will look at it. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 21:36, 31 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
