Is the concept of notability required because of limitations to server capacity?

At present, Wikipedia's servers (presumably) do not have the capacity to function as a repository of all past and present human knowledge. As such, the concept of "notability" is required in order to prioritize the use of Wikipedia's storage capacity. The potential exists, however, for Wikipedia to morph, one day, into just such a repository of all information. At that time, would "notability" be needed? Hello, Pyraminxsolver. There is no problem with server capacity, and concerns about server capacity have no impact on content decisions. I suggest that you read WP:Notability#Why we have these requirements for an explanation of how notability interacts with our three core content policies, which are Verifiability, the Neutral point of view and No original research. These interrelated policies and guidelines have enabled us to create the world's greatest encyclopedia, a top ten website that gets billions of pageviews per month, and to offer it to readers worldwide for free. No; @Pyraminxsolver: Thanks for thinking about this, but it's a matter of human capacity, not machine capacity. Thousands of Wikipedians use our WP:Watchlist to watch out for vandalism and stupidity. Anyone can edit, right? Unfortunately, the billions of people who have Internet access include people who don't understand, and those having dishonest intent. With only thousands of us to watch millions of articles, it can be difficult to keep up; I've already spent a few hours at it just today. This is not the only reason, but it's an important one. There have been online encyclopedias that had no notability bar, and they soon filled with advertisements, political promotion, and thoughtless rants. So, like other websites, we want to be able to do the thing we do, and for us that's an encyclopedia that is reasonably accurate, neutral, and even somewhat fair. If someone wants to operate a repository of all information, that sounds like a splendid thing for someone else to do but Wikipedia isn't trying to be everything; we have certain goals and let others handle other good things. Blocked from editing (especially from pages I myself created/uploaded)

Almost all of my Wikipedia input has been accomplished via smartphone.

My prior smartphone malfunctioned and has been replaced. As I attempt to edit Wikipedia text using my replacement smartphone, I'm being blocked - especially from pages I myself created.

Yesterday, I attempted doing my Wikipedia editing utilizing a public-library internet computer, but found myself blocked there too.

Hi Paynethymaya. If you can clarify things a bit, then perhaps it will be easier for someone to help you figure this out. Since you've posted above using the "Paynethymaya" account, that account hasn't been WP:BLOCKed per se from editing Wikipedia. Are you perhaps trying to edit using another account? If you're able to log in to your "Paynethymaya" account, then you should be able to edit articles, unless there are some technical restrictions (e.g. page protection) in place to prevent you from doing so. If you're trying to log in from an IP address that has been blocked, then its quite possible that the IP has been blocked for reasons completely unrelated to you. For example, if you're trying to log in from an open proxy or using a VPN, then there's a good chance that IP address has been globally blocked as a preventive measure against abuse. The same could've happened in the case of a publicly accessible computer (e.g. one at a library) because of a past history of serious abuse from that IP address. In general, though, IP address tend not to be blocked all that much except when absolutely necessary as explained in WP:BLOCK#IP address blocks because such blocks can aeffect a very large number of users. Moreover, I don't think which smart phone your using matters much as long as the IP address your phone is using hasn't been blocked for some reason. Notability via a single source

Hi Teahouse. I just came across St. George's School (Vancouver) and noticed the quality of the article was pretty low. It mainly relies on primary sources, so I looked for secondary ones. Outside of a handful that mention the school in passing, the only thing I found was Saints: The Story of St. George's School for Boys. The fact that a book was published about this school tells me it is likely notable. But let's say someone tracks down this book and rewrites the article using information from it rather than the primary sources; that's not good either, right? Generally multiple secondary sources are needed to establish notability. I was considering opening an AfD for this article, but now that I know this book exists I'm not sure how to proceed. The link you post above says that the book was published by Mitchell Press. I searched for that name and quickly arrived at mitchellpress.com. Mitchell Press in 1979 may have been different from Mitchell Press in 2022; but FWIW the latter is described in the website (and particularly near the foot of this page) as a Canadian company that handles printing and related business. If you have material more or less ready for a book and pay Mitchell to print and bind it, Mitchell will print and bind it. And the reason why I looked this up is that back in the days before sleepy little used bookstores mostly went out of business, they'd frequently have piles of (somniferous) school histories from obscure publishers (if not the schools themselves), and presumably compiled by alumni for alumni. A school may be notable, but to me this isn't demonstrated by the mere existence of a book about it. NB this particular book may be quite unusually good, and gratefully read by people who've never been to the school; and the school may be notable too: I haven't investigated. -- Hoary (talk) 08:29, 8 November 2022 (UTC)

Notability review (for re-submission)

Hi editors, there was a discussion about eligibility of sources for the draft on Draft:Bluebell Group to meet NCORP requirements. After some hesitation from one reviewer, the article was declined in July 2021. Since then, the company has been noted in more articles.

Below are five selected articles that I believe meet NCORP requirements (they are from independent news outlets and analyse the company within the wider industry for at least 2 paragraphs). Could someone kindly advise whether these indeed might qualify, and if I may resubmit the entry at this stage? Thank you for your guidance.

Kuru Footwear Resolution (Support or Oppose)

Prior discussion on this Draft got archived without a resolution. Please see here. I have taken the recommendation of all involved and revised to reduce anything promotional. I have also removed the medical claims and changed it so that it says which publications have stated the benefit of the shoes. In addition, changed the all CAPS spellings to lowercase. Could we please have just a Support or Oppose vote? Support means the page is OK now to go live. @Theroadislong I would really appropriate if you can post some specific reasons as to why? Have you checked the prior discussion? Several people have agreed that it can be improved and it just sounded promotional. No one has yet raised an issue with provided citations. I have now improved the article, so it needs another look. Many people raised issues with the citations, I was one of them. This article inherently makes medical claims, and the sources do not meet the required WP:MEDRS standard. Attributing the claims does not fix that problem. MrOllie (talk) 19:41, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
The medical claims have been removed and revised. It is now just saying "According to publications..." and what they have stated. There is no medical claim anymore. Plus a shoe that is made for better walking conditions and health is hardly a medical claim. It is not a pill or medication. It has been rated in top 10 of walking shoes or shoes that help certain health conditions on multiple notable publications which also have Wikipedia pages, so they are coming from reliable publications. If what you say was the case, then many other shoe pages on Wikipedia should be removed that make similar shoes. Downinit9 (talk) 20:02, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
That is where you are wrong. Literally EVERY claim that would have a direct impact on human health or the practice of medicine REQUIRES sourcing that meets WP:MEDRS claims. Even if it is the case, there are supporting sources from Wired, Men's Health, Well+Good, Footwear News, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, ABC, Self. all of which are credible publications with Wiki pages. Downinit9 (talk) 20:36, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
I looked at a few of those, but they were short mentions in listicles '18 best shoes for bunions' and so on. They don't meet WP:CORPDEPTH. Trivial mentions of the company aren't enough. - MrOllie (talk) 21:10, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
There are many other articles that are more in depth. These are pretty indepth: WIRED, University of Utah, HEALTHLINE, SUGGEST, inquirer (3 paragraphs), Salt Lake Tribune, theislandnow (6 paragraphs) and Footwear News has 4 articles, 4 articles together combined makes it significant coverage. You seem pretty focused on arguing here that the draft is notable, but this is not a venue that can help you with that at all. Discussion here is not going to overrule the AFC reviewers and make your draft into an article. One final piece of feedback: in the future (on whatever topic you write about next, this one is a lost cause), you should take a hard look at your sources and excise all the stuff that is trivial coverage or obviously closely based on a press release. To elaborate the point of WP:MEDRS: it’s not just WP:MEDRS, it’s also an interaction with WP:UNDUE.
Magic Stone (tm) cures cancer - clear medical claim, and disallowed per MEDRS unless exceptional sourcing is provided.
Magic Stone (tm) cures cancer, according to X, Y and Z - technically not a medical claim (it is a claim about what X, Y and Z say). However, is it due weight to mention X, Y and Z’s opinion on the matter? I would argue no unless those are sources that one could cite for MEDRS matters. Otherwise, we are just bypassing MEDRS via attribution-laundering. It is pretty obvious that the general reader is more interested of whether the "cure cancer" part is likely to be true than by who claimed it was, and that a barrage of authoritative figures saying it works is the same as a Wikipedia-voice statement to that effect. (The current sentence in the draft is Several publications such as (...) have stated the benefits of the shoes in regards to (...).)
Of course, there are situations where X says (medical claim) is acceptable - either when MEDRS-level sources disagree and we need to present the dispute, or where the claiming itself is the interesting fact (e.g. "faith healer X claimed to cure cancer by voodoo, and was sued for false advertising"). Using the auto citation button

I'm currently trying to make an article on the genus Archangelia, yet I can't seem to be getting any result from the auto-citation machine when I try to input this citation into it https://www.researchgate.net/publication/336319358_UPPER_PRECAMBRIAN_AND_CAMBRIAN_PALAEONTOLOGY_OF_THE_EAST-EUROPEAN_PLATFORM_CONTRIBUTION_OF_THE_SOV1ET-POLISH_WORKING_GROUP_ON_THE_PRECAMBR1AN-CAMBR1AN_BOUNDARY_PROBLEM, is there anything wrong that I'm doing? @Rugoconites Tenuirugosus The citation bots are not infallible and in this case you'll have to create the citation "by hand" using the template {{cite book}}, filling in the standard parameters as listed on the template page. major article revision space

Through the talk page, I agreed to work with another editor to major revise the Matthew Bullock entry. In reading about sandboxes, which I planned to use for the re-write, I read on a page I cannot now locate that Sandboxes should not be used for major edits of existing articles due to the possibility of mis direction to that page during searches. You should be able to avoid that problem by editing one chunk at a time, which is recommended anyway, to avoid conflicting with other edits in the article space that may occur in the meantime. Robots operated by Google and the like are asked not to index sandbox pages, so a regular search via Google or similar should not lead anyone to any sandbox page. (Search robots can't be compelled to stay away, but most will stay away.) So you can forget about the particular worry that you express above. If editing "one chunk at a time" (which Pyrrho recommends and which indeed is often a good idea) cramps you -- perhaps because you hope to implement a change that will affect many sections, or you want to rearrange content -- feel free to do so in a sandbox: yours or your collaborator's, but of course not Wikipedia's all-are-welcome sandbox. -- Hoary (talk) 23:51, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

If you're doing this, whether alone or in collaboration, you might want to put the {{under construction}} template in the article. This does not prevent people reading and even editing it, but it gives notice that something is in progress. ColinFine (talk) 11:19, 8 November 2022 (UTC)
Reading the link, it looks like my two options are {{under construction}} and {{in use}} both of which are for short term tagging during a period of major editing. Podcasting as a reliable source.

Here is the question I want to ask all of you:

Are all podcasts a reliable source?

I wanted to ask that because I hardly see people citing podcasts as a source in articles they edit.

And I'm sure that news media organization does podcasting.

As a general rule podcasts are considered to be usable under the same circumstances as op-eds or blogs - if its showrunners are subject-matter experts and the podcast is focused on their area of expertise. If the podcast is an interview with the subject (which usually is), then it would be considered a primary source and cannot be used. I'm not sure what further information you are asking for, IP user. The format of a source is pretty well irrelevant, whether it is text, video, or audio. What matters is who published it. If it was published by an organization with a reputation for editorial control and fact-checking, then it is probably a reliable source. If it was published by the subject of the article, or somebody closely associated with the subject, it is probably reliable, but not indepedent, so can be used only for limited kinds of information. If it was self-published by a recognized authority as Jeske said, it can probably be used. Otherwise, no. ColinFine (talk) 20:37, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
Does that mean that I should cite podcasts as a source, if I want to edit articles to add information in each topic like culture, tourism, politics, history, science, comedy, geography, popular music, and health? Blogs are almost never considered reliable, they are user generated content without editorial oversight. Please see WP:RSSELF as blogs and many podcasts will fit in this category. McMatter (talk)/(contrib) 21:17, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

Perhaps because comedy doesn't pretend to be a reliable source of information? There may be facts buried within a comedy routine, but much of it will be (and should be) made up, and even things that a speaker claims as fact will not necessarily have been fact-checked. I suppose a comedy podcast could be a source for a claim that a certain person was in a particle podcast, or said a particular thing; but if there is no independent source saying this, does it belong in an article? It's very difficult to give you other specific examples. We've described to you what makes a source reliable and told you the actual format of a source is not greatly relevant to determining its reliability. Notability issue with Draft article

  • @Cinemaha: You might be able to make the case that WP:FILMMAKER #3 is satisfied here. That hinges on whether Manasanamaha is a "significant or well-known work" under the meaning of the guideline. (I genuinely do not know the answer.)
A more productive approach would be to find sources about Deepak (not his film). However, you do not need more references; you need good references, that satisfy all three criteria listed at WP:GNG: (1) significant coverage, (2) reliable, (3) independent. For instance, [1] is an interview with the subject, and therefore not independent.

@TheJusticeBear, I'm sorry you've had a rather rough time of it - often people learn the hard way that writing a decent Wikipedia article is much more difficult than it looks, and our standards have risen over the years, so many articles exist that would probably not be accepted today. Few people want to go around doing cleanup work, unfortunately. I'd like to add more details to Mayim's page about the work and/or partnerships she has done or is doing with many different organizations but for at least one, and I'm pretty sure there were a couple more, all I could find was a quote from her on the organizations site. I mucked up an AFD - I don't want to cause chaos - can someone help me (or simply) complete the request

Michael Bruce (musician) is mentioned in the very first sentence of Alice Cooper (band). He is mentioned in the fourth sentence of the biography of Alice Cooper, the band leader. Congratulations on writing what is becoming a best seller, Maganolla. When it becomes a best seller, it's likely that somebody will create an article, of their own volition. There's no need to attempt to speed up this process. (Indeed, any attempt to speed it up is very likely to backfire.) Wikipedia does not recommend attempting autobiography (see WP:AUTO, and it has "articles," not "author pages." If in time you become well known and written about, someone else may draft and submit an article about you. There is a process for requesting an article be written about a topic, but that rarely works. With certain exceptions, you can delete content from your own Talk page. The assumption is that you have read the content and see no reason to keep it. If this is about New System of Musical Theory, then you have indeed published it. Presumably you clicked a red link, which takes you straight to creating the article. If you wanted to create a draft instead, you could have typed "Draft:New System of Musical Theory" in the search box, and clicked the link in The page Draft:New System of Musical Theory does not exist. Is it a good habit to ping people when replying to them on talk pages?

Users don't get a notification when someone replies to their comment unless the edits meets the special criteria. Unless they check the talk page again they won't know that someone replied. Should pinging be used more liberally? Frogging101 (talk) 20:42, 8 November 2022 (UTC)

Translating English articles into Spanish

Does anyone know how to publish pages in Spanish or does anyone know of a good Spanish Wikipedia editor? We have translated Shelley Jackson's page into Spanish, and we would like to publish it in the Spanish Wikipedia. Can anyone help us to do this? We are new editors. An important thing to remember when trying to do something like this is that each Wikipedia project has its own separate policies and guidelines as determined by the members of that project's respective community. Since English Wikipedia is the largest of the various language Wikipedia projects, many other projects have adopted or modified English Wikipedia's policies and guidelines; however, there still might be some big and important differences. Most of the Wikipedias seem to highly discourage WP:MACHINETRANSLATIONs and there may also be differences in how articles (including citations) are expected to be formatted and otherwise written. The only way to know for sure what differences exist between Spanish and English Wikipedia would be to ask at Spanish Wikipedia. If your Spanish is pretty good, you should be able to do so without too much difficulty; however, you shouldn't automatically expect the users of Spanish Wikipedia to be able to help you in English. Some might be able to, but you should assume you're going to nned to somewhat understand Spanish if you're planning on creating or editing content on Spanish Wikipedia. how to write an article about a company or an industrial product without being biased or sounding like an advertisement? It is really a hard thing. Hi 每天都想睡觉的口天吴. Are you somehow connected to the company (or industrial product) you're trying to create an article about? In general, creating a Wikipedia article from scratch is a pretty hard thing for anyone, let alone a new user such as yourself, to do since there's lots of Wikipedia policies and guidelines related to how articles are expected to be written. However, creating an article can be especially hard when you're somehow connected to the subject you're trying to write about since it can be hard to neutrally write about such subject no matter how hard you might try. There's really no trick or secret skill to creating articles other than perhaps gaining a greater familiarity with how Wikipedia articles are expected to be written, and the only way to do that is to gain more experience at Wikipedia editing. So, instead of trying to create an article right now, maybe it would be better for you to try an improve some of the more than six million articles that have already been created per WP:CONTRIBUTE. Many articles are in need of improvement and one way to learn about how articles are expected to be written is to try and fix and improve existing articles. This gives you a chance to see how other more experienced editors apply Wikipedia's various policies and guidelines as well as what types of things are generally considered OK. Your job as an editor (on any topic), is to summarize WP:RS independent of the company, and if there are none/too few, write about something else. WP:GNG is your first hurdle. If you conclude "Yeah, I have those sources, no problem!", move on to WP:YFA.

A Wikipedia article summarizes what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about the topic, showing how it meets Wikipedia's special definition of notability(like a notable company). Image use

I am editing a Wiki article on nuclear emulsion that would be greatly improved by adding an image of one of the principal creators of that scientific device: namely Marietta Blau. She is the subject of a Wiki article that contains exactly the image I wish to use. The image is 'available' in Wiki Commons as File:Marietta Blau.jpg, but the file has been created with the restriction that 'It is only being used to illustrate the article in question', thus rendering it unavailable to any other Wiki article. The most obvious way to fix this would be for me to directly edit the File:Marietta Blau.jpg spec, to add my Wiki article to the list of allowed articles, and to adjust the wording accordingly. I attempted to contact the file's creator but got no response. How should I proceed? I should add that I did attempt to add the file unmodified to my article only to discover, as I expected, that it was quickly removed by a vigilant Wiki-bot. Hello, Reculet, and welcome to the Teahouse. First, note that the file File:Marietta Blau.jpg is not on Commons, but has been uploaded directly to English Wikipedia. This is because Commons accepts only free content, which the image is not.
The policy governing the use of non-free images in English Wikipedia is the Non-free content criteria. It is perfectly possible to use a non-free image in more than one article, but each use requires a separate justification according to those criteria. It does not seem to me that using it in nuclear emulsion would meet criterion 8: Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding, but if you disagree, you may make a case (perhaps on Talk:Nuclear emulsion. Unless you can achieve consensus that that use of the image would meet all the criteria, then I'm afraid there is no way of using the image in that article.
There is a picture of her on Commons (at C:File:Marietta Blau Picture.jpg), but I'm about to challenge that, because I think it has been cropped from the picture in en-wiki, and illegally uploaded as "own work". ColinFine (talk) 12:30, 9 November 2022 (UTC)

Draft Submission

The draft was declined on October 4th. The next day, you resubmitted it without changing much. If you simply resubmitted it without fixing any of the issues, why should another reviewer spend time on it?
That being said, I somewhat disagree with the message left by the reviewer Greenman. Don’t get me wrong, the draft is promotional and the decline was correct. However, promotional tone can usually be fixed.
A more pressing issue is that the company may not be "notable" (in Wikipedia’s sense of the term). If so, no amount of work on the draft will help. It would be useless to polish the draft to eliminate promotional tone, only to have the draft declined for lack of notability, which cannot be fixed inside Wikipedia.
Go find the three best sources you can that show the company is notable (in the special meaning linked above) and list them here, we will tell you if it’s plausible that the company is notable. TigraanClick here for my talk page ("private" contact) 16:06, 8 November 2022 (UTC)

[3] is an interview. It may not be formatted as a series of questions and answers, but a large amount of the text is direct quotes, and much of the rest is clearly information that the company provided itself. As such, it is not an independent source. [4] suffers from exactly the same problems.
[5] is a better source overall. It is clear that the author of that article did more research than one interview. Unfortunately, the amount of article that is devoted to SeamlessHR is very low - it verifies that the company exists and raised a series A round, but that’s it. Therefore, it fails due to lack of significant coverage.

I'm afraid there's no way to tell. Drafts that are obviously not acceptable are easy, so they tend to get declined or rejected quickly. Drafts whose references are obviously of high quality (not too many references, to well-known reliable sources, and with titles that suggest they may be independent, rather than interviews or press releases) may get picked up relatively quickly. But drafts with a large number of sources of very mixed quality, and drafts whose sources are not in English, may take longer, until a reviewer is motivated to pick them up and spend the time on them. I was looking for events to write about and found the West Palm Beach Wendy's shooting. It was deleted in 2008 for lack of long-standing notability, but I found two sources from 2017 and 2018 that discuss the attack in detail. Surely this meets WP:NEVENT? @MelatoninEmbryo: You can probably ask for a WP:REFUND of the deleted article to draft space, modify it as needed to reflect more recent coverage, and submit it at WP:AFC. The second source is IMO a strong argument to accept such an article, per WP:PERSISTENCE.
In any case, do not bring the case to WP:DRV (the "appeal" place for AfDs) - the AfD was probably decided correctly based on the sources available at the time, but it does not preclude recreation with newer sources. Manual of Style question regarding a brand

For the company IMEC (Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre), it should be capitalised like that, correct?

According to their about page, it's officially 'imec'.

MOS:CAMELCASE indicates "use: Time, Kiss, Asus, Sony Mobile. (Capitalize GEICO, IBM, as acronyms/initialisms.) avoid: TIME, KISS, ASUS, SONY Mobile", so it would fit in the acronyms category, right? Not like adidas being written as Adidas (which in that case it would be written as 'Imec')?

You can use the {{Userbox}} template to easily make userboxes. The documentation of that template shows what the different parameters are used for. In the visual editor you can insert the template by clicking on "insert" and then "template". You may also be interested to know that an article about her was created in 2020, but it had grossly inadequate sourcing and as such was converted into a redirect to the article on Carl Sandburg.

Hi! As a long term project, I want to take the Eschede train disaster there. But to make the right start, I want to choose the best sources from the beginning. I could not find what exactly a "high quality RS" is. I assume it would be books or academic articles, but are there any requirements for a publisher? Hello, PhotographyEdits. You should read Verifiability and Reliable sources, both of which discuss this matter. When evaluating a source, you need to look into the reputation and credibility of the book or article, as well as the author, the publication and the publisher. The reputation of the publisher is definitely important. For example, books published by university presses or publishing houses specializing in academic literature are often preferable to books by general interest publishers that may be prone to sensationalism or promotion of fringe theories. Currently, I see that the most used reference is a segment of the US TV show Seconds from Disaster, which may have the benefit of being accessible for English language speakers. I very much doubt that is among the best sources for a featured article on this train wreck. You will need to familiarize yourself with the range of literature and rely on the best books and journal articles, which are likely to be in German. Cullen328 (talk) 18:48, 8 November 2022 (UTC)

@Cullen328 Yes, I don't think the Seconds from Disaster is a good source either, so I want to remove that one. And the books that I could find were indeed in German, which I already added to the further reading section. But my question still is: how do I evaluate those books. Is an academic publisher like Springer always good enough for WP:FA? Some German publishers are relatively unknown and have no online information about their reliability. Can they be trusted? PhotographyEdits, I would not say that a book published by Springer is always the best source, but it is an indication of reliability. If the publisher is lesser known, then you need to examine the qualifications of the author. If little is known about the author or the publisher and the book is has not been reviewed, then that particular book is probably not one that you want to rely on. "Template:Listen" not working properly

I'm attempting to place relevant music files on the article Piano Sonata No. 9 (Mozart), however only one of the files shows up. I copied the code directly from the article Piano Sonata No. 8 (Mozart), where it shows all the files perfectly. Checking the "Template:Listen" page, none of the formatting seems wrong, so I'm not sure how to fix this.

adding url references to an article

I am working on an article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiloh_Baptist_Church_(Alexandria,_Virginia), having problems with the references. The reference [1] refers to a URL link, and goes down to Citations as expected. When clicked on, the citation does not link to the actual reference in the references section. @ATM622: If they don't have their own standalone articles, they need not be linked at all. If the tournaments are not notable, they don't need to be referenced. (And if the tournaments don't already have their own Wikipedia articles, that might signify non-notability, or it might just mean nobody has written an article about them.) But yes, if you feel they are needed, you can convert them to references. These references can be used to verify statements, but if they are not significant coverage and not notable tournaments, they will not confer notability on Mizzi the way Wikipedia defines it. I will convert to references because there is no way that they can be verified otherwise. Also these are primary and official sources of data and are useful to the avid chess reader, because through them one can find the detail about the opponents, and sometimes there are links to the games themselves, enriching the biography. I'm not exactly sure where to ask this, but I'm wanting to create an article on someone named "Tom BetGeorge" (no I"m not at all associated with him or paid by him) who I discovered through Youtube. A quick search using WP:RSSE returns a bunch of sources mentioning him (and even some articles specifically about him), however I"m not entirely sure if he's notable since I'm a bit unfamiliar with how notability is determined for a BLP. First, your draft was Declined, not Rejected. The latter means that the reviewer saw no potential. You have worked on improving the draft. While general advice is gain experience before attempting a new article, the latter is not forbidden. Auto-confirmed (>4 days, >10 edits) does give permission to skip AfD AfC and create an article in mainspace, but that path is recommended only for experienced editors. Your earliest contributions were made just one week ago, so you can't be talking about your own user talk page. Elsewhere, no, you may not delete talk page sections. Why not just leave them be? It's normally better that a person gets plenty of experience improving Wikipedia articles before attempting to improve Wikipedia's workings -- but if there's some particular talk page that is unusually problematic, do please point to it. -- Hoary (talk) 06:35, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

Hello 56independent. I don't know of any link regarding expanding stub articles, but when I do so I follow the same rules as when creating a new article, as outlined in Help:Your first article. New information has to come from reliable sources, and be presented in a neutral style. Help:Referencing for beginners and Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources may be of help when collecting good reference sources needed for the expansion. I also find it helpful to read numerous good Wikipedia articles about similar topics, to get a better idea of what is generally included in such articles. I hope this is of help to you. Warren Beatty, Shirley MacLaine and A. A. MacLeod

Both the articles Warren Beatty and Shirley MacLaine mention their uncle A. A. MacLeod but while the Beatty article has "Canadian politician" the MacLaine article has "a Communist member of the Ontario legislature in the 1940s". I'm wondering if the details should be added to the former or deleted from the latter. While neither article mentions MacLeod again his includes "Both Beatty and MacLaine have referred to the MacLeods as a major influence on their own liberal political philosophy. One of Beatty's biographers has commented that his aunt and uncle were "the private inspiration" behind his portrait of Louise Bryant and John Reed in his 1981 film Reds." so perhaps both should.

Incidentally, the MacLaine article refers to MacLeod as "her mother's brother-in-law" while the Beatty article has "uncle by marriage". MacLeod's article describes his wife as the sister of their mother. Mcljlm (talk) 18:54, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

I don't believe that the two actors' articles referring to the same aspects of their lives is problematic. A member of a legislature in Ontario is indisputably a Canadian politician, as Ontario is in Canada and a legislature is the forum in which politicians enact legislation. Both are true. The brother-in-law of one's mother is an uncle, the relationship to which is established through the mother's own marriage, and is therefore an uncle, but not of direct blood, rather "by marriage". Both are equivalent to each other. Likewise if your mother's sister (it must be a sister) marries a man, that man is your uncle by marriage (the sister remains a full blood aunt) as well as being your mother's own brother-in-law and, conversely, your the brother-in-law himself has a wife, the original sister, who is the sister of the two subjects' own mother, i.e. Beatty's and MacLaine's mother. It all makes logical sense. The merit of not amending such texts to be seemingly formulaic is (a) it doesn't actually need doing; (b) it lends credence to the "individual contributors" idea that is (c) core to the WP project. It starts by saying that this is "an e-commerce logistics company in Singapore that provides same day delivery services by connecting users via an online delivery platform". This isn't how you'd describe it to a friend; because if you did, they might wonder what drugs you were on but anyway their eyes would glaze over and they'd start to doze off. The problem is, it's bullshit, phrased not to inform, but merely to impress. Myles Moylan

I want to add a Findagrave link to Myles Moylan's page to support my claim that he was born in Tuam, Co Galway. I know that Findagrave is not usually acceptable but I have connected Myles to his parents (who were married and buried in Tuam)and three brothers. I have attached records and newspaper cuttings which make it difficult to believe that he could have been born in America. I have had many arguments about Myles Moylan's birthplace and I won't pretend to understand why a newspaper article or an article in an historical journal isn't enough to prove a point. That's an interesting question, @BuffyO'B. You're certainly able to. If you genuinely think it meets the rules laid out for external links (or if you're convinced it would improve Wikipedia and want to ignore all rules), you should be able to add it without fear of serious consequences. When I started researching Myles Moylan I would have been delighted to have been presented with the documents that I have uploaded to Findagrave but if the documents/newspaper articles are not acceptable as sources then I suppose an external link carrying these documents is hardly acceptable. If you go to the following link, it will take you to John Moylan, brother of Myles. I cannot add photos to Myles's profile. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/169515151/john-moylan You will find an article dated 22nd July 1876 ( a few weeks after the Battle of the Little Bighorn) that was published in the Tuam Herald, a Co Galway loocal paper, which is in operation since 1838. Myles is quite clearly connected to Tuam through his late brother John and nephews. An article from the Evening Mail, Stockton, Calif dated 19th April, 1901 connects Myles to a cousin John. It states quite clearly that they haven't met in sixty years since they left Ireland.
If you follow through to Thomas E Moylan (brother of John and Myles) you will find a small piece from the West Newbury Messenger where a visit by Myles to his brother Thomas is recorded.
The Journal of the Old Tuam Society published an article about the Moylans of Tuam, mainly about Myles and his nephew Brother Michael Titus, 5th Superior of the Christian Brothers. Hi BuffyO'B I apologize in advance if I'm misunderstanding something about your original post, but it sounds like you did your own research on this matter and then uploaded what you find out to Findagrave. If that's really the case, then you would be essentially citing yourself which means you would need to be considered a reliable source per WP:SPS. If you're basing your research on what you found in reliable secondary sources then it would seem better to simply cite those sources instead of your interpretation of those sources. Unless you're a well-established and recognized as reliable source on such matters, your interpretations are going to be considered WP:OR. I have difficulty with what is considered original research. I uploaded the census return for 1855 and original enlistment record for 1857 to Findagrave. I know that neither are acceptable to Wiki. The newspaper reports are surely not original research, but you need a subscription to access them. That's why I snipped them and uploaded them to Findagrave, so that other researchers could access them. I couldn't upload the article in the Journal of the Old Tuam Society. Apart from being lengthy, it's under copyright. It really doesn't matter in the long run. Researchers will gravitate towards Myles's Findagrave page anyway and find the trail and it'll be clear to them that he was a Tuam man. A census return is not really "original research", but it would almost certainly considered a WP:PRIMARYSOURCE and could only be used in certain ways. Original research would be if you cited the census return as a source and then add your own interpretation of it. What you would need to find are reliable WP:SECONDARYSOURCES that interpret the return and then cite them. As for needing a subscription to vuew a source, that's OK per WP:PAYWALL as long as the source is considered reliable per WP:RS and used in proper WP:RSCONTEXT; in other words, a source doesn't need to be freely available online or even available online at all as long as it's published and relatively accessible. The fact that someone may have to pay money to view the source makes assessing it a bit harder, but it doesn't make it impossible. Finally, uploading clippings to Findagrave or some other website often runs into problems as explained in WP:CONVENIENCE, unless it can be clearly determined that the source has not been altered in anyway. An online archive like Newspapers.com or the Wayback Machine is essentially one very big pool of convenience links, but usually these links can be used to verify that the archived content is as it was when originally first published. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:13, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

The Tuam Herald report dated July 22nd, 1876 is available on Irishnewsarchives.com. It was turned down because it was inconclusive - there could be two Myles Moylans, one from Tuam and one from Amesbury, MA. The others newspaper clippings are available on Newspapers.com. I can't remember what was wrong with them.
Nobody can access the Moylan article from the Journal of the Old Tuam Society unless they buy a copy.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this. If not, please point me in the right direction. I came across ISRAEL21c - not much on the page. I dug around and it was created by someone who was banned for sockpuppetry. He actually created over 600 pages. Whats the correct process for dealing with these? Page number in a pdf of a journal

Hello Teahouse, I've tried finding the answer to this question but had no luck so I'm bringing it here. Is there a preference or a guideline to what page number I should use when referencing a pdf of a scholarly journal? As a specific example, I am trying to reference The Florida Historical Quarterly (direct link: http://palmm.digital.flvc.org/islandora/object/ucf%3A22393). I would go further than Sungodtemple. The essential part of a citation is information that will allow a reader first to evaluate whether it is likely to be worth looking at, and secondly to find the source if they wish to. A link to an online source is a convenience for the reader, not an essential part of the citation. I need help with some really advanced esoteric Wiki syntax

The article United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics has an endnote ({{efn}}) encoded in the lead regarding the inability of one of the US flagbearers to appear at the opening ceremony. The end-note appears embedded within the "Ice hockey:Women's tournament" section, just below the "Group play" table. Tracking this down, I find that the problem is that the Group Play table has been transcluded from the Ice hockey at the 2022 Winter Olympics – Women's tournament article, and the table there is created by {{invoke}}'ing a module called "Sports table". The Sports table module has parameters to generate end notes for the table, but apparently this syntax is also capturing the end note that was written in the article lead, creating an end note for the table having nothing to do with the table. I am adept enough at Wiki-syntax to diagnose the problem, but nowhere near adept enough to correct it. Can someone here direct me to a resource who might be able to correct this? Thanks!!! hi ip user! unless you're working on a article where it makes sense to have an emoji to display a graphical representation of these characters as an example like articles related to Unicode or Emoji, not really. usually in other pages, these characters can be mentioned using text ("the purple heart emoji" instead of just the character itself 💜 directly, which may not display in older computers).

How would I go about uploading the correspondence that gave permission and uploading the image itself? @Etriusus: It seems unlikely that any new image of Big Stan (drill rig) would be allowed under Wikipedia's non-free content use policy per WP:FREER because (1) a freely licensed photo of the rig already seems to exist as File:Mobile drill rig in Wyoming, 2006.jpg and (2) a new photo of the rig could be taken by someone and released under an acceptable free license. Non-free photos of structures or equipment such as this are generally not allowed when the structure is still standing or the equipment is still being used in publicly accessible areas and capable of being photographed. So, this means you will either (1) need to take a photo of the Big Stan yourself and upload it under an acceptable free license or (2) find someone who has already taken such a photo or agrees to take such a photo and get them to give their consent for their photo to be uploaded under such a license. If you want to use a photo from the "Kevin and Ruth" website and whomever runs the website actually took the photo themselves, you will need to follow the instructions in the "COM:VRT" page that Madeline linked to above. @Marchjuly I think you misunderstand my question. The image on Big Stan (drill rig) is not that of the Big Stan drill rig, but rather a relatively similar model, per the caption. I have spoken with Kevin directly and he has agreed to release the image to the commons, in fact he sent me a few images. My question was just what template would be appropriate on commons since these are not my images, even though most of them have never been released online. @Etriusus: I think you misunderstood my reply; I stated a freely licensed photo of the rig already seems to exist as .... This was to take into account that the photo in question isn't one of "Big Stan", but perhaps I should've made that more clear. What you need to have Kevin undestand is that he isn't just releasing his photos to Commons or Wikipedia; rather, he's just using Commons to essentially make versions of them "freely" available forever for anyone in the world to download and reuse at anytime in pretty much any way they please (including commercial and derivative use) without needing to directly contact Kevin each time they want to do so. He's not transferring his copyright ownership to anyone, he's just making it much easier for others to reuse his work under some not really very restrictive conditions.
If you explain all of this to Kevin and he's OK with that, then ideally he should uploaded the files himself to Commons using c:Commons:Wikimedia VRT release generator with their original c:COM:EXIF data whenever possible. He just needs to follow the guidance at each step of the upload process so that his copyright ownership can be verified. If, on the other hand, he doesn't want to do that and would rather have you upload the file for him instead, then you're going to need to use c:COM:UPLOAD to upload the image. Since the photo's aren't your c:COM:Own work, you're going to then need to have Kevin send a c:COM:CONSENT email to c:COM:VRT for verification purposes.
Since Kevin is going to need to include the name of the file you've uploaded as well as the type of copyright license he wants to use for the file in his CONSENT email, you probably should discuss these things with him before uploading anything and ask him to wait until the file's been uploaded before sending any emails. In addtion, you should try and use the license he decides upon when you're prompted to pick a license when you upload the file. The email Kevin sends in will be assessed and verified by a VRT member, and the VRT member will take care of everything else if the email is OK. @LFJunaidAhmed If you look at almost any article on a scientific topic on Wikipedia, you'll see that it is indeed often based on research papers published in peer-reviewed journals but usually we prefer WP:Secondary sources, so that means review papers, not a single piece of WP:Primary research. In addition, for articles making any sort of medical claim, we need even more reliable sources, as discussed at WP:MEDRS. Whatever the source, anything we write in Wikipedia has to use our own wording (unless directly quoting) to avoid issues of copyright infringement or plagiarism. It would be very unusual for a single research paper on a new topic to reach our guideline for notability but you may find cases where such poor sourcing has slipped through in the past. When you do try to create a new article, I suggest you use the WP:AFC process so as to get advice on avoiding the main pitfalls. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:54, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

I'm afraid that what you've written in your sandbox has no potential to become a Wikipedia article and should not be moved to article space (which is what you're asking to be done here). Wikipedia articles are about notable subjects, ones that have received a lot of attention from news organizations, scholars and the like. This small YouTube channel is not going to qualify. Also, since you picked a username which is the same as the channel name, I'm afraid you've also broken our username policy. Hey, I'm a relatively novice editor, so I'm not sure who I should contact about this - I noticed that the links to DDHQ on 2022 HoR race prediction tables all seem to be wrong, and link to the generic 'Decision desk' Wiki page. I manually fixed the ones for Alaska and Maine, but I'm not sure if there's an automatic/better way to fix this. Example - go here, and the DDHQ link goes to Decision desk instead of Decision Desk HQ.

You blanked their userpage, which is generally off-limits, then personally attacked them ("Fuck you fat bitch") without a second thought (if you bothered to give more of a glance at the edit history, you'd see that another user actually deleted the majority of your work). They listed the reasons in their edit summaries. I understand the frustration with your work being deleted, but WP:AGF - attacking other editors and putting them down isn't allowed here, especially with a response as vehement as yours. Continuing that behavior is sure to get you blocked.
Additionally, this line on your userpage ("Who i hate on wiki is Audrey.m.horn") reminds me of other people's userpages when I edited FANDOM, rigorously listing their on-wiki relationships and who they're friends with and hate.   3. If you are still interested in having those texts be incorporated into the article, follow Dan's suggestions and do the appropriate formatting and citations.

But all of the citations I've included contain significant coverage (they are interviews and features on the subject, not "passing mentions") in independent and reliable sources. @Ss prod here is a list full of most popular publishers and which ones are okay to use. Also, interviews are generally avoided since that is usually the subject talking about themself. In the case of this article, I only used interviews to give a source to a simple fact (ie, premiere location, etc) and in each case the fact was established by the writer of the article and not by the subject. I am still curious why one article was allowed and another denied, outside of the conflict of interest issue (which I do understand). The article was rejected based on its citations, not the conflict, when similar citations have been approved. Can anyone clarify this for me? I know I'm new here, but I think the Shim article feels well sourced, and I think it's important to keep room for the new generation of filmmakers, especially those who are BIPOC and women who are often left out of these spaces. I'm sorry that my bringing up the Shim article in contrast with the one I am submitting may lead to added obstacles for him. Why I mentioned it is because I'm confused about the interview issue when the citation isn't used to establish the opinions of the subject but to establish those of the interviewER, and in Shim's article, this citation was OK. My suspicion is that you want to write about your own experience and conclusions. Solo notability

Last year I created a draft page for American YouTuber and singer Draft:Gabi DeMartino who is the 1/2 of the duo Niki and Gabi. Unfortunately the draft has been declined several times because "she's not notable enough as a solo artist". She released more music individually than she did when she was a part of the duo, was featured in one of the most-watched music video in YouTube within 24 hours, opened for German artist Zedd, signed to Roc Nation for music management and has done so many other stuff to identify as a solo artist but her single did not rank high on a recognized chart. I do not think that either the Buzzfeed or the Insider articles are really significant coverage of DeMartino. If they are the best case for notability that can be made, even if we did consider them significant coverage I would be concerned about whether this was an article on a living person based on a single event. Your draft contains lots of sources, but it's not at all clear to me which of them actually count towards notability – generally a draft having lots of questionable sources does not help it get accepted at AfC: it's much better to have a smaller number of sources which all clearly count towards notability. Get my article published - How to improve references?

I wrote the following article (Sandbox), but Wikipedia declined its publication: User:LRExpertsen/sandbox

It is about LatamReady, a solution provider company of Oracle NetSuite ERP.

Wikipedia declined it because the references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia Article. In the message, they say the sources don't have 1)in-depth, 2)reliable, 3)secondary, or 4)independent.

However, I edited the article by adding new well-known references such as New York Times and The Guardian, but Wikipedia rejected the article.

Hello, LRExpertsen, and welcome to the Teahouse. Your first problem is that it is not clear what your article is about: is it about LatamReady or about Oracle NetSuite ERP? Also, I can't actually tell from your draft whether NetSuite ERP is a product of LatamReady, or a system that LatamReady provides access to. I notice that we have an article on NetSuite, that you haven't actually linked to. What is the relationship between LatamReady and that company?
Your other problem is that you are focussing on just one of the three criteria for sources: that of being reliable. The other two are independence, and significant coverage. Two of your four sources do not mention LatamReady at all, and are useless for establishing it as notable. I suspect that the WSJ one does not either, but I can't read it as I am not a subscriber. And the Spanish source seems to be based on an interview, so it is not independent. Remember that Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources.
I also need to ask, do you have a connection with LatamReady? When somebody creates an account, and immediately embarks on the incredibly difficult task of creating an article, they very often have a connection with the subject. If you have, you should read about conflict of interest, and if you are in any way employed by the company, you must read about paid editing and make the necessarily declarations. Wikibd23, if your sources are of high quality for demonstrating notability, you only need two or three of them. However, your sources must support everything written in your article, so your sources may number more than that. @KP070707 After a brief skim, you should remove words such as "famous" (see WP:WTW). Also, citations should come after punctuation. Broadly speaking, the article does come off a tad promotional, so I would advise rewriting the article as if you were a completely neutral observer, just stating the facts. If you mean the boxes that appear above the edit window, (these are called edit notices) yes, although doing so requires admin privileges (see Template:editnotice), with the exception of pages in the user/user talk namespace, which can be custommized by creating a page named Full Page Name including Namespace prefix/Editnotice. There exist articles about previous seasons, for example 2022 Indian Premier League. If it is valid to have an article about a season that has not yet started (a real concern) then your short article can be improved by being modeled after the other articles. I did not state nor imply that there is a copyright infringement problem. Copying from one Wikipedia article to another is allowed as long as there is attribution in the edit summary. And my understanding is that if an editor is copying content they created from one article to another that copying attribution is desired but not required. If I have this wrong, perhaps other editors will comment. The intention of my second comment - which should have been made more clear - is that I disagree with the value of a 2023 article for each team in the IPL versus adding updating content to the existing articles. Hi Mcljlm. The citation error was due to you (I'm assuming it was you) trying to use add a url address for the |website= parameter. You should use the name of the website instead. I don't understand Hebrew; so I simply replaced the url you added with "gov.il". If you know the name of the website, you should use that instead. Another thing I noticed is that you're citing non-English websites as sources. While this is allowed as explained in WP:NONENGLISH, it can be confusing to readers sometime since they're reading English Wikipedia and, thus. expecting sources written in English. Many governmental websites have multi-language versions and you should cite the English version of the source if one exists whenever possible. If no such page exists or the source in the original language is preferred, you can still make things a bit easier by using the parameters |script-title=, |title=, |language=, and |trans-title=. Most of the documentation pages for the more widely used citation templates like {{cite web}} have examples on how to use these parameters, and it's not too complicated to figure out. The |script-title= parameter is particularly useful when the source being cited uses a non-Latin script like Hebrew does because it helps with MOS:ACCESSIBILITY. In such cases, the |title= parameter should be used for the Romanized version of the source's title, with the |trans-title= parameter then being used for the English translation of the source's title. The |language= parameter is just the two-letter code for the source language. I reformatted one of the citations you added using these parameter (I left the |title= parameter empty because I don't read Hebrew), and it would be big help if you could go back and finish the citation I started and then also clean up the rest in the same way. Finally, I also noticed that the |page= parameters for some of the citations seem to have dates added to them instead of page numbers. The date the source was published should be added to the |date= parameter, and the page of the source being cited is what should be added to the |page= parameter. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:48, 12 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks Marchjuly. Are you saying I should have entered gov.il as the website name rather than https://www.gov.il? I didn't use Central Elections Committee as the website name since the CEC is only a government department as its home page URL https://www.gov.il/en/departments/central-elections-committee/govil-landing-page indicates and its name doesn't always appear in its webpages (see below). Would it be preferable to gov.il despite that?
I'm not sure why you say I'm citing non-English websites. I cited the English-language page https://www.gov.il/BlobFolder/guide/candidates-lists-25/en/candidates_candidates_lists.pdf which I accessed from the hyperlink Names of the Candidates in the 25th Knesset Elections at the foot of https://www.gov.il/en/Departments/Guides/candidates-lists-25 (it's actually there twice), en indicating it's the English version. ​The reason you were seeing this type of citation error was because the url address www.gov.il had been added for the |website= parameter of the {{cite web}} template that was used for the citation. I replaced that with "gov.il" because I didn't know what the name of the website was. Ideally, if the website has a name you would add that name for the website parameter. For example, if you were citing a Washington Post article, you would add "Washington Post" or maybe even "Washington Post.com" as the website and not the url address www.washingtonpost.com. As the non-English citations, I mistakenly assumed that you had added them, but they were actually added by someone else; so, my apologies for that. If, however, you're able to understand Hebrew, then perhaps you can help clean up the citations to non-English sources. Dealing with the Hebrew citations will need a lot of work. Most are to CEC pages which appear to exist only in Hebrew listing individual lists. The citation I added is a document which theoretically includes the candidates on all the lists but also include the names of candidates submitted who aren't on the final lists. The others are to Hebrew news sites (neither necessarily the most appropriate). Most of the names mentioned in the article may be in the lists published by English-language sites (which would be preferable to Hebrew CEC pages but it'll take time to find them.

Future productions

I'm not super familiar with guidelines surrounding media that has yet to be released. I think that WP:NFF and WP:CRYSTAL suggest that Wikipedia pages can be created for soon to be released productions if it has been confirmed by reliable sources that the show has already undergone a major phase of production. And of course, there must be reliable secondary sources that demonstrate notability. I was working on Draft:Quiet Part Loud and I was wondering whether I should move it to mainspace or wait a few days until November 15. I don't want to run into the hassle of someone else writing the page in mainspace and having to figure out how or what to merge, but I don't want to move it to mainspace prematurely either. One of my article nominated for delete

I noticed that an administrator requested to delete an article name Ridoyanul Hoq. Because as a creator, I moved the article directly from the draft space to the main space, and he also said that the references are from the blog site. Although this article was reviewed by 2 administrators before. I respect his opinion, but one thing to note here is that: while moving the article from the draft to the main space with mobile, I didn't see the option like WP:AFC and the references are not of any blog site. I have told about this on his talk page, but he is not replying. What should I do? I don't know too much about Wikipedia policies. How make a page title italicized (DISPLAYTITLE not working)

I am creating a taxonomy article and I want it to be italicized. I referred to the DISPLAYTITLE function and it is giving error: 'unsupported character {'. Could someone give a working example of DISPLAYTITLE and point out what was going wrong? Also, how can I edit the title of articles (I didn't italicize some other article titles)? Meeting Notability/Significance Requirements & Reliable Sources

I was interested in adding a page for the song "Sex Dwarf" by Soft Cell, from the Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret album. I felt the track alone has generated enough controversy to be note-worthy, such as its music video being banned in the UK, being covered by Nine Inch Nails, etc. I've read the Wikipedia:Notability (music) article but wanted to seek more opinions.

My main reason for hesitating was the lack of proper sources--the song's controversy is mentioned in BBC documentaries about Soft Cell (like in the Young Guns: Go for It series) but those same documentaries also feature interviews with Marc Almond and Dave Ball where they discuss the song/music video. Apologies if similar questions are asked often, basically just looking for input on if this is a viable topic for a separate page and if so, are there any recommendations for sources? @Yalocalgaynoah, The Vice piece seems objective enough in parts that you should be able to use it as a source for some of your article. It's kind of a review and partly a memoir, if I read it correctly. writing a biography

I want to write a bio of a well known commercial artist who is deceased. Is it correct that every fact, such as his employers, places of residence, and so on, must be publicly documented? Some of the information I have is from personal knowledge, such as that he was a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts. Can I not write that because it isn't documented? That is correct, yes. If you know something personally, that is original research and is not allowed on Wikipedia. Look for reliable sources that contain the information, and make sure there are sources establishing notability as well or else the article can't be written at all. Given that in the end, content needs to be verified by references, finding valid refs before diving into content is good advice. And there is no "owning" of articles. Once an article is created, anyone can edit it, as long as the new content is true, relevant and referenced. For any existing article, click on "View history" to see the editing history. Renaming John Henry Peyton to John Howe Peyton

Before my wrist surgery (and although the very competent local genealogist was out sick that day), I started a new article about a long-dead Prince William County, Virginia delegate whom I thought was named John Henry Peyton, per a post-2000 published Peyton family genealogy at that library (which unfortunately did not give his birth and death dates). I expected to write a second article about his cousin (both sharing the same paternal grandfather) John Howe Peyton, who served in the Virginia Senate representing Augusta and Rockbridge counties significantly to the west a couple of decades later. However, when the genealogist got back, he pointed me to a family biography available on Project Gutenberg which demonstrated that John Howe Peyton actually held both legislative positions. So I revised the article briefly one-handed to include the correct refs and mention the confusion. For what it's worth, while that long-ago published family biography does not meet modern research standards (i.e. gets both dates of legislative service slightly wrong), the wikipedia article's title needs to be changed to meet the revised infobox and contents generally. I'm still trying to track down John Henry Peyton's vital statistics (his index entry in the recent Washington family genealogy incorrectly cites 2 pages or missing genealogical entries and the Virginia Historical Society library/archive has no index entry for him), but it's clear to me he doesn't otherwise meet wikipedia's notability standards. On the other hand, John Howe Peyton does meet those criteria, and I plan to work on the article when the genealogy library opens Saturday, even if still typing one-handed. Thanks for your help. Then yesterday evening's changes got stuck/lost in a display driver update, and today proved a bit crazier than I had expected. As for notability, all members of state legislatures meet wikipedia's guideline. I understand they're not as sexy as rock band members or professional athletes, but figuring out who they were is important for historians. For Virginia legislators of previous centuries the genealogy is important, for this was an oligarchy. Then there are the quirks, like "forgetting" those who freed slaves, opposed slavery or for decades after the Civil War (a/k/a War between the States) were Republicans.Jweaver28 (talk) 01:18, 12 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi Schminnte. It has been reviewed as you say so it allows indexing by external search engines but we don't control when it happens. It's up to each search engine to detect the page and see it can be indexed. Some search engines may watch our edit logs and detect it if any edit is made after the review (there are currently none) but I don't promise anything. Finding sources on an article

Are books/articles and their authors given names and surnames in external links, bibliographies and further reading sections supposed to be mentioned in specific order? @Mcljlm Good question. Some attempt at logical order would seem reasonable. I see no guidance at WP:EL. MOS:FURTHER says "usually alphabetized". In External links it seems logical that an item from a person/organisation directly connected to an article's subject should precede items totally unconnected. I try to include an item's original publication date {probably from being a retired librarian and archivist} and sometimes wonder if that should affect a list's order.

Problems editing a discography and adding a new title.

"Calypso" is the "B" side to John Denver's single "I'm Sorry" and peaked at position #2 in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1975. What do you think makes a really good article?

I'm sure that there are many excellent math(s) related articles, but they'd be a lot easier to read if only I studied math(s) at university. ¶ Articles would be slightly more enjoyable if their creators avoided certain ponderous de facto conventions of Wikipedia writing. One among many: It seems that most writers will avoid saying that a building is on a road, river, etc when they can instead say that it's located on that road, river, etc. (And they always can.) This is a good question, CactiStaccingCrane. I think it comes down to stakes: Who (or what community) is invested in the subject, why does it matter to them, and if the subject were slightly different, what would that mean for them or for us? These don't need to be explicitly addressed, especially the last one, but it's a question of uniqueness and importance. Looking at some random articles: William Rehnquist's lead says he is remembered as an important Chief Justice who changed the landscape of American law; Stage pin connector says it is a standard cable type for theatrical lighting in North America; Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi says his four sons are simultaneously present in all three Legislative forums, which is a record. Those articles all demonstrate that their subjects have unique, ongoing (or recent) importance. One of 'my' articles, Astri Aasen, has not been important in several decades, but I mention a scholarship in her name to illustrate her enduring value to Norwegian art, whether or not that is of great value. Not all articles have ongoing or recent importance, and that's fine, but for those that do, I find that to be part of why I read them and why I enjoy them. Urve (talk) 18:49, 13 November 2022 (UTC)

So digital inclusion means ensuring the benefits of the internet and digital technologies are available to everyone. Digitally-excluded people can lack skills, confidence and motivation, along with having limited or no access to equipment and connectivity. And for women that means very little economic opportunity.

Sometimes IMDb has the same content as Wikipedia; as IMDb is user-generated and has no visible history, it is impossible to easily know which came first. Hello Thegibuspyro. I've used IMDB for clues to help improve articles about actors. If IMDB states an actor was in several well-known films I then start looking for published film reviews or movie reference books for a reliable source to show the person was indeed in the film. Karenthewriter makes an excellent point that also applies to other websites that are not themselves reliable sources for use on Wikipedia. This includes fan sites, hobbyist sites, blogs and sites like Quora and Reddit. These sites may say that something is factual and may mention an actual reliable source that can be cited, although you need to read that source first. Hello, KhinMoTi. Unless you are certain that the book or newspaper is in the public domain, then it would be a copyright violation to upload scans. This usually requires that the newspaper or book was published over 95 years ago. But it is not necessary that a reliable source be online in order to use it as a reference. Just cite the complete bibliographic information. For a book, that would be the author, the book title, the year of publication, the publisher, the page numbers, and the ISBN number. If you use Template: Cite book, you can also include a relevant quotation of a sentence or two, as well as a link to the appropriate Google Books page. Cullen328 (talk) 18:58, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
While these above answers are quite correct, there may be another option for online links. Newspapers.com. Generally speaking, wikipedians who qualify may obtain newspapers.com access at no cost through the fully searchable The Wikipedia Library and be able to create, modify, and link clippings from the thousands of newspapers available. Based on a cursory look at User:KhinMoTi's profile, they may well qualify for access to the library. Hello once again. I created another article, Nigel Boddice which has been reviewed as C class. I have two questions: 1. I have added significant amounts of detail more than when it was reviewed, so when or how does it get rereviewed? 2. How much difference would I have to include to get to B class, or even A class/GA? @Schminnte Up to "B", these ratings are informal, and anyone who feels they understand the relevant guidance, in this case Wikipedia:WikiProject_United_Kingdom/Assessment#Quality_scale, can change the "This article has been rated as". For B class, there are six criteria that need to be met. The process for reviewing these criteria is informal and can be done by any editor. To get the article to a WP:GA, you have to get your article reviewed formally by another editor. A-class is not used much these days, but it is supposed to be given via a formal review process by the Wikiproject the article falls under. Cleanman, issues like "missing or empty title" are easy to deal with. But Draft:Alex Lane has a more serious problem. To establish that he's notable enough to warrant a Wikipedia article, you'll need to find and cite several reliable independent published sources with extensive discussion of him, and base the draft on what they say. The draft cites only two sources, and they tell us very little about him. That he is "up-and-coming" suggests that there may not yet be any acceptable sources. Please remember that what you are doing is not "creating a wiki page for" Lane but writing a neutral encyclopaedia article about him. Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. Neither of your current references says more than a few words about Lane. (The Filmthreats one says more about one of his films, but you are trying to write an article about him, not about Within). Cleanman, as you have told us that you are Lane's assistant, you are contravening Wikipedia's terms of service by continuing to edit without first making the mandatory formal declaration of your status as a paid editor (See that link for how to do so). If you continue editing without making the declaration, you are likely to find your account blocked.
Once you have made the declaration, your first and only priority in working on your draft should be finding at least three sources, each one of which is simultaneously reliably published, independent of Lane, and contains significant coverage of him (see those links for exaplanations of what they mean). If you cannot find at least three or more such sources, then every bit of work you do on the draft will be wasted effort, because it will never be accepted into Wikipedia. Introducing my parents/family to being a wikipedian

Hello! i have been a wikipedian for a while now and it's fun but my parents don't know yet, they use WP but don't like the editing aspect, my brother uses it the most and once said he would never have the guts to edit WP articles in case he makes a mistake, and my other brother doesn't think much of what he calls "wikifolk", he would be the hardest.


What would be a good way introduce WP maintainence to my parents? maybe sending them the WP:CANTBREAKIT? how do i explain to them that's its not all new articles and major edits? that you are free to fix any little mistake you see and revert vandalism? i'm a photog and my parents do know that so maybe i should introduce them to the commons first.


Or should i just straight up tell them i patrol and edit WP?

You may wish to tell them you edit, although not necessarily tell them the pages or your username? @Noilaedi: Surely there are subjects that interest you academically, professionally, or as a hobby. Look at some articles on those subjects. If you see vandalism, fix it. If you see a claim that needs a citation, find a reliable source and cite it. If you see spelling errors or grammar errors, or you can rephrase the prose in a more compelling (but neutral) way, then change it. Make small changes to start out. If a topic that interests you doesn't have an article, then go to WP:AFC and start one in draft space. It appears to be intended for examples of Category:Hypothetical technology. A better name may be Category:Hypothetical electrical components. Yeah I was unsure about the name, too. "Hypothetical" seems better than "Non-invented" as it is also parallel with this other category you just mentioned. I currently know two pages which fit in this category(whichever its name is): Trancitor and Memristor. Both have been theoretically deduced but not invented, yet. Farooq, don't forget to add appropriate parent categories to this category before you are done. Categories on Wikipedia are nested within larger, less specific categories to form a hierarchy and it also demonstrates relationships so that this category doesn't remain isolated. Within fitting within the category structure, it's unlikely that anyone will come across it or knows how it relates to similar categories (whatever those might be!). Liz Read! But source [[rfc:9110]] renders as rfc:9110, an external link to https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc9110

Controversial Reddit communities

r/sex should be added there. I asked properly with age and details about how to have sex as a gay-bisexual men with other men as a bottom and it was automoderated to be removed, and after getting it appealed by messaging a subreddit mod, an anonymous mod perma banned me and made any excuses to not allow my post to be posted in their subreddit because there was no 'women' involved and 'only men having sex with other men' topics.

No one has ever told anyone about r/sex being homophobic. Try searching "gay men", "gay", "male vibrators", and "pegging" no less than two years. Hello, Jamkressa, and welcome to the Teahouse Freely licensed pictures of the subjects of articles are always welcome, and as Sarrail says, you can upload them to Commons. Please make sure that they are free to reuse: if you took them yourself, then you have the legal power to donate them as required, but if they are not your personal photos, then the copyright owner is the only one who can make that donation, and they should upload the pictures themselves, or follow the procedure in donating copyright materials. Despite what Sarrail said, it is very unlikely that a non-free picture will meet the criteria in the NFCC and be accepted by Wikipedia.
The fact that you said you were "tasked" to do this indicates that you have a connection with the church - I assume it is Church Body of Christ - Filipinista. If that is so, you need to read about editing with a conflict of interest, and you should stop editing that article directly. If you are in any way employed by the church, then you are a paid editor, and you must make the formal declarations required (see that link for the details). This is the most urgent thing you must do.
Once you have done that, there is another thing that is much much more important than uploading pictures. The article has essentially no sources. (It has one, but that says nothing about the Church, just that it has registered with the SEC). At present, the article does nothing to establish that the Church meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, which depends not on what it is or does, but on what has been published about it by people unconnected with it. I have had a quick look, and failed to find any independent sources at all, but I have only looked in English. What somebody needs to do, in order for the article to remain in Wikipedia, is to find several sources wholly unconnected with the Church, that write about it in some depth. (These may be in Cebuano, if there are no English sources). If there are no such sources, then the article should be deleted. If you find suitable sources, Then you should make edit requests on the article's talk page for these sources to be added.
The article will probably then need to be rewritten to be based on what the sources say: Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. Is it allowed to have 2 user accounts? I have 1 user account that I use for the english wikipedia and 1 user account that I use for the norwegian wikipedia. I never mix the 2 accounts. Reference questions

Hi all. Apologies -- I'm totally new to Wikipedia. Been trying to put together an article in my Sandbox and it was not accepted when submitted -- the reason was that the references "do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject". I'm thinking (hoping) that the basis for this is that the most appropriate references I created are not "reliable" because I can't seem to create links to the articles in the original publication Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly -- a professional publication that is only available online via subscription. I suppose I could create images of the articles that I could share somehow, but they are copyrighted material, so I'm not sure how to proceed. @Henry01301: Thanks for your question, and thanks for taking the matter of sourcing your article seriously. Obviously it is good to have a link to an online version of a source where possible, but it is not required. Where the source is behind a paywall, there are a couple of options open to you. If you can actually get a URL, but it requires subscription, then you can mark it as such: see the description at Template:Cite_journal#Subscription_or_registration_required. The other alternative is just to not have a link. This is often the case when citing a book, for example. The source still needs to be reliable, independent of the subject, and give significant coverage of the source.--Gronk Oz (talk) 21:40, 12 November 2022 (UTC)
@Henry01301: Looking over the article, which is at Draft:Wendy Sibbison, it is coming along nicely, especially for your first article. It still needs to be edited for tone. At the moment, it is written in quite a promotional way: for example, the opening sentence says that she "carved out a specialty in appellate litigation" instead of simply saying that she specializes in appellate litigation. Similarly, beware of statements like she is "likely the first to [do something]" unless a reliable source says that she is likely the first; it is not up to Wikipedia to make a judgement on matters like that. Hello. That entirely depends on your notability, and if you can avoid a Conflict of Interest. In most cases, unfortunately the answer is no, due to Advertising, COI, and Un-Neutrality. No. Wikipedia article subjects must be notable in some regard. The guidelines are clear. If you believe you are notable according to these guidelines, there are procedures you can use to request an article be written here and here, but you will not be allowed to write it yourself due to the conflict of interest (well, you're allowed, but once someone else notices the conflict it will be reverted quickly). Current sources

How do I find more non-contemporary sources for Rawson Stovall, an article I am working on? As far as I know, the only source backing up his main assertion to notability, which is that he was the first syndicated video game reviewer in the US, ( I have added plenty of references, though, so he easily meets GNG) that isn't primarily based on an interview is the PC Gamer source. @Gemmasalomon – Before your draft gets sent to the mainspace (that is, the article space where any reader can see it) its subject needs to be notable. The general notability guideline states that articles require significant coverage in multiple, reliable sources that are independent of the subject. Your draft is mostly sourced to IMDb, which unfortunately is classified as generally unreliable here. You do have a citation to The Sydney Morning Herald—but alas, it only covers that she won an award. It looks like the sources need to be more reliable… see Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources for a general list of reliable and unreliable sources. Draft Rejected

I keep getting declined on this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Troy_Guard and I don't understand why. He is a notable figure, the facts are supported by reputable third parties, all sources are "from "magazines, journals, and news coverage (not opinions) from mainstream newspapers." per the Wikipedia guidelines. I am basing my submission off another notable Denver chef of similar renown, Lon Symensma, and cannot see any difference in the two submissions, yet I keep getting rejected. Please help. I'll look at one sentence. That first endeavor has, over time, turned into TAG Restaurant Group, a successful restaurant company housing all of Guard's concepts, including quick-casual, better bowls Bubu; modern Mexican Los Chingones (with sister fast casual concept Little Chingones); breakfast spot HashTAG; and neighborhood bistro FNG. "Concept" seems to mean "restaurant chain". I guess that "quick-casual" and "fast casual" mean "fast food" or "short order", but "better bowls" just mystifies me. "Sister" seems to mean "similar" or just "another". I don't know how a "neighborhood bistro" differs from a regular bistro. Nothing like this appears in the (feeble) article Lon Symensma. H.O.R.G. - notable enough?

I've found a subject that I think would be good for a brief article. I've made several edits to existing articles, but this would be my first new article, so I'm very excited at the prospect! It's certainly not the most important topic in the world, but it's been written about in at least three published, reputable media sources, as well as being heavily cited in an article published in a peer reviewed journal of medicine.

H.O.R.G. conducts pseudo-satirical research and classification of various types of bread clips. I would contend that it's a notable subject due to it being an intersection of methodologically rigorous scientific parody and unintended practical use. Additionally, if bread clips are considered notable enough to have their own Wikipedia article, it seems like H.O.R.G. ought to qualify as well.

HORG is a research enterprise whose taxonomic and other achievements have long impressed me. But you may be confusing (A) notability with (B) what Wikipedia calls "notability". The latter welcomes vast quantities of trivia (dresses, fictional guns, etc); taxonomic accomplishments, not so much. How do Renumbering in a simple wikitable?

Today, I added a village into List of villages in Nakodar tehsil. Since it was #47 alphabetically, I had to manually re-number from there to #147. Very time-consuming. Is there a better or easier way to do this? JoeNMLC (talk) 19:24, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi JoeNMLC. {{Row numbers}} can be used but it's messy, works poorly with some tools like VisualEditor, and you first have to convert an existing table to use it. In your example I would actually remove the numbers unless they are used as designations in official documents or something like that. Pinging Premeditated Chaos who made the list. Who cares whether Dhaliwal is number 47 in an alphabetical list of selected villages written in English? It isn't even an official or large language of the area. The only use I can think of is being able to easily see the total number of villages but listing 147 numbers to provide one number is too much. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:24, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi User:PrimeHunter, tonight a did ce, chg wikitable to numbered div col with rules / solves problem of manual numbers in wikitable. While looking at List of villages in Bhojpur district as an example, I uncovered a bug with the "Div col|colwidth=15em|rules=yes". For rules=Yes, the rules do not display. @JoeNMLC: I'm not a fan of the list solution. The numbers still seem useless. The table could have been made sortable by population with one word (change wikitable to wikitable sortable). A list cannot be sortable. If further data like List of villages in Vazhapadi taluk is added then a list is poorly formatted compared to a table. The population already lacks vertical alignment. It's not so important currently but it does make it harder to spot large villages. Lists work better when there is only one piece of data. A good thing about the list is that you can have multiple columns when screen width allows it. Template parameters are usually case sensitive and {{div col}} does not claim to support Yes so it's not a bug to only support the documented yes. Some templates use the more fancy {{Yesno}} to support many forms of input but it's not required. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:50, 15 November 2022 (UTC)

What should I do with this redirect issue?

Last month, a new article called Activities of Daily Living was created, which replaced a redirect to Activities of daily living. Links to the latter, such as this template (before I fixed it), now go to the article about the book.

@Frogging101: The most appropriate thing to do may be to add a disambiguating hatnote to each article, which I have just done. Alternately, the novel could have a disambiguation in the title, such as Activities of Daily Living (novel), but I think that's unnecessary with the hatnotes.
