Hello, and happy New Year and all
Hi, and thought (or didn't think) that you may be interested in the Stopping thought page which I rescued from a prod. The concept seems a major one in meditation, yoga (especially Raja yoga) and other practices, and is a no-brainer (somewhat literally) as a major stop along most spiritual or consciousness pathways. The article was an orphan, so not very well seen or attended, and looks to provide a good foundation to build on. Randy Kryn (talk) 14:15, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- I'll keep an eye on it. It'd obviously be more defensible outside the non-action world of Zen if it had a few citations. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:18, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- Of course, and search engines have some to offer (as well as those mentioned in External links). I'll play with it a bit, and hopefully others will edit as well. Since it was prodded maybe it'll be nommed for deletion, which is actually where a lot of improvement usually occurs for a potentially large topic which currently contains few refs. Randy Kryn (talk) 14:27, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- Well, this should be worth saving, and the matter will be beyond doubt if there are three or more decent book reviews, which there certainly should be. That's more than I can say for the tardigrades on the moon thingy, which really does need to be redirected. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:39, 8 January 2025 (UTC)

Gnathostomatha and Rhipidistia in the internal vertebrate phylogeny
Hi – thanks for all your work on the vertebrate article (and many other articles, apparently)!
I noticed that in the internal phylogeny tree the lines labeled “(jawed)” and “(lungs)" aren’t labelled with links to the corresponding groups (Gnathostomata and Rhipidistia, respectively), unlike all the other lines. Since you obviously put a lot of thought into this, I looked for the corresponding edits to understand the reason, but I couldn’t see one. (You removed the Gnathostomata label in this edit and added the Rhipidistia label as an invisible comment in this one.) I can see that those lines have particularly short labels and would use up more space with those long labels, but to my mind that would be well worth it in order to make the tree completely labelled – otherwise people are bound to wonder, like I did, what’s different about those lines and whether there’s no name for those groups. (If you agree, I’ll be happy to make the edit.) Joriki (talk) 07:21, 18 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks. Width is a critical limit especially on the small screens that half our readers are now using, so I chose to label the main clades; the labels have gradually got more numerous, as (ahem) pressure to label more and more creeps up on the diagram. I've added links and abbrev. labels which I hope works for you; we can't go on making trees wider and wider. Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:54, 18 January 2025 (UTC)

What do you think of the "Skeptical response" paragraph? - Everything to do with the subtle body attracts a large amount of cultish and uncritical writing. Wikipedia is required to be neutral, so anywhere it discusses material of this kind, it is obliged to present the skeptical side as well. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:53, 7 February 2025 (UTC)

Wikipedia and newbies
Per this essay, do you think Wikipedia has improved with its treatment of new users, especially with spaces like the Teahouse? — 🌙Eclipse (she/they/all neos • talk • edits) 16:33, 17 February 2025 (UTC)
- Yes I do: good people are trying their best to help. The drift of the essay is however in a different direction, that of nudging people into doing the right thing simply because the structure takes them that way. Wikipedia is still resolutely stuck with an antique technology at its core - edit a text using a text editor - rather than manipulating structured objects in a framework that knows that structure is the thing. Theme of duty in The Lord of the Rings
Hullo! Thank you for your great articles about Middle-earth! What do you think about such topic as "Duty (and betrayal?) in The Lord of the Rings" (or, wider, in Tolkien works)? Duty and loalty is very important for many heroes: Aragorn, Boromir, Faramir, Éowyn, Beregond, Frodo, Sam and so on. Oath-keeping is essential for Théoden ("Oaths ye have taken: now fulfil them all, to lord and land and league of friendship"), while oath-breaking and betrayal leads to devastating consequences (Saruman, Gollum, Dead Men in the Paths of the Dead). Duty, loalty, oath-keeping, honour was very important for medieval knights and for Tolkien heroes. Or do you think this topic has already been covered in the articles? —Corwin of Amber (talk) 07:46, 19 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, thank you! It is a possible topic, I think. It is covered to an extent in Faramir#Medieval knight - there's even a diagram of "allegiances and betrayals" - cited to Jane Chance's book Tolkien's Art: 'A Mythology for England'. Chance also compares the two young hobbits and their two "good and bad Germanic lords Théoden and Denethor", in Pippin Took#Analysis. If that's what you have in mind, then the title should be "Allegiance in LOTR" (spelt out) or maybe "Feudal allegiance in LOTR". Other scholars have touched on the theme, so it ought to be possible to get an article together. "Duty" would be wider - there is a strong duty on the nine members of the Company of the Ring, but that would require different emphasis and sourcing, as the bond there is friendship rather than oath. Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:02, 19 February 2025 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Clypeus (disambiguation)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Clypeus (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because
- it is a disambiguation page which either
- disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
- disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
- it is a redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" whose target is neither a disambiguation page nor page that has a disambiguation-like function.
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. ASUKITE 16:36, 21 February 2025 (UTC)

Hello Chiswick Chap. I was reading through Cereal yesterday coming from the grain/cereal discussion, when I found this sentence: The strategies developed by the Green Revolution, including mechanized tilling, monoculture, nitrogen fertilizers, and breeding of new strains of seeds
. It seems to me that the subject (strategies) has no predicate: "developed" is a past participle used as an adjective, and "including" is a present participle. Yoga Sutras question
@Chiswick Chap I saw you are editing on Yoga Sutras also, and had a quick question. Do you know which verse is this (in Yoga Sutras of Patanjali#Book_III: Vibhuti Pada) - "The text warns (III.38) that these powers can become an obstacle to the yogi who seeks liberation." It is not III.38, and III.37 mentioned obstacle for samadhi and not liberation. Asteramellus (talk) 21:24, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
- Asteramellus - it is 3:38 as usually numbered, but the numbering does vary by one (or two) verses in some systems. The verse indeed says samadhi; this is variously translated and interpreted; if it means nirbija samadhi as e.g. Swami Satchidananda states, that is equivalent to liberation. GA for bean
I am not prepared to start a GA review of Bean, but I am suggesting that for the nutrition subsection, rather than one example, you create a table for several types of dried beans, using https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/food-search?type=Foundation&SFFoodCategory=Legumes%20and%20Legume%20Products as a reference. I would not go to the trouble of listing all of the minerals, nor what percentage of US Daily Values those represent. David notMD (talk) 10:19, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, I'm not sure that for a group article it even makes sense to have such a section. Chiswick Chap (talk) 11:40, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
- I agree that not having any content about nutrition would work. However, if you want to have minimal content that broadly covers beans, that ref will allow a statement that dry beans are 21-25% protein by weight, protein content being the nutrient most people are curious about. David notMD (talk) 15:44, 24 February 2025 (UTC)

Bulbinella rossii
Hi Chiswick Chap. It's been a month since we last comunicated and things have been relaxed but decided to pick up editing at the end of the month to work on the Bulbinella rossii article. Which in my opinion was much more enjoyable to write than the Pittosporum kirkii article. I thought this topic would be of interest to you. Let me know if you'd like to review it. It's fine if you would prefer not to or prefer to focus on other articles at present but I'd happily appreciate any fixes to the prose, grammar and sentence structure. Cheers. Saw your tomato-comment
The original quote looked like so:
"When contributors can’t come to agreement quickly on a controversial topic—say, whether a tomato is a vegetable or a fruit—then they hash it out on the talk page, where a dispute resolution mechanism referred to as a “request for comment” may be initiated."
so I thought it was close enough. I won't fight for it. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:11, 18 March 2025 (UTC)

Concerns about Legolas
Hiya! I've been reading some of your Tolkien stuff recently because it's super well written and incredibly interesting, and I came across Legolas and grew a bit concerned over its content. Unlike other Tolkien content you've improved, he doesn't really have much in the way of analysis, themes, etc present in his article, especially when compared to other Tolkien character articles (Such as Nazgûl, Gollum, or even something like Balrog or Gandalf). While conception and creation information is valuable for a character, I do not believe the subject is meeting Wikipedia:GACR 3a for being broad in its coverage, as it fails to address the character's lasting impact or analysis, even among Tolkien scholars. I'm also not quite sure if the conception info is even conception info, as much of it is analysis of Legolas's character, which if true would then make the 3a deficiency now focus on Legolas's lack of developmental information.
I was considering putting this up for GAR, but I decided that it would be more helpful to just let you know directly about this. I feel Legolas isn't really meeting the GA standards at present for comprehensiveness, and could very well be expanded in order to do so. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 12:23, 19 March 2025 (UTC)
- OK, I'll take a look. I would point out that the character is certainly notable given the amount of attention Legolas got with the Jackson films; and that scholars have been less interested in him that in some other characters, basically because there isn't so much to say about a nice example of elf-ness than about evil. I've added a paragraph about Legolas and reconciliation with the Dwarves, in the person of Gimli; and rearranged the article to show that we have in fact three paragraphs of Analysis already, so we're well clear of GAR territory, to be honest. For future reference, I certainly agree that it's not right to fire the GAR gun without thinking first, indeed it would have been quite inappropriate in this case. Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:07, 19 March 2025 (UTC)
- Yeah, I don't doubt the character's notability at all. Thank you for the work on the article! Given your Tolkien expertise, I trust your rationale on Legolas, and I very much agree that the article's current state should be well beyond GAR territory, as you say, and should stave off any future attempts permanently, which was a major concern of mine when I brought it up. Apologies about the inconvenience, and thank you again! Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 16:23, 19 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks! That's great. I've found another angle, too, just now. Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:28, 19 March 2025 (UTC)

Why are you still worried about slashes in br tags?
I'm curious why you made this edit. The last time I saw people concerned about closing slashes in br tags, it was because the syntax highlighter gadget didn't like unclosed br tags, but that problem was fixed more than two years ago. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:04, 28 March 2025 (UTC)
- Jonesey: The unslashed br tags still cause problems today in Firefox, maybe in several other browsers too, so no, it hasn't been fixed. Chiswick Chap (talk) 17:06, 28 March 2025 (UTC)
- Please link to an example page. I use Firefox. What is the problem that unslashed tags cause for you? If the problem is that the syntax highlighter gadget does not highlight properly, it looks like you have not added the necessary lines to your common.js file. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:18, 28 March 2025 (UTC)
- Um, thanks, but that fix works only for users who have installed it ... bit like telling Earthlings that they should have known about the planned destruction of their planet because this had been prominently displayed on Betelgeuse ... Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:32, 28 March 2025 (UTC)
- You'll like the bypass. In addition, your edit linked above, which didn't change anything useful, bothered everyone who has that page on their watchlist because you refrain to make a quick change to your .cs file, which is easily accessible in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying "Beware of the Leopard". Any editor who enables the syntax highlighter gadget and who finds the br tag stuff annoying can find and enable this same quick fix, readily available on the gadget's help page. Better and more focused photo
Please help me in understanding that in what way the photograph which I uploaded was not clear in description? You undo my edit with this comment. The photograph being used to represent the pupil in 'Goat' is not well focused, so I thought it will be good to use a better focused one. You can compare both the photographs. I am always ready to learn and flexible. Please help me understand. Thanks and regards.
- Just my opinion, having edited the article a bit; the new image made the eye look quite horrible for some reason; perhaps the extreme close-up and the illumination and reflections have caused it to give an otherworldly effect not at all present in the previous image. Whatever it is, the pupil, iris, and 'almond' region of the eye all look really strange with multi-coloured patterns. I see there are multiple images of goat eyes on Commons; we could always choose another one if you think the current one is inadequate, but I'd say it does the very simple job needed here just as it should. Review circles question
Hello; do you happen to know: For those who use the review circles page, I imagine they see their nomination reviewed much sooner, right? Maybe I should also ask the creator of review circles. I am asking because we should mention this benefit on the instructions page. Prhartcom (talk) 22:27, 14 April 2025 (UTC)
- That's the only advantage, yes. The price is the random nature of the assignment of article to review: I had to review an article on some sport of which I knew nothing, with no familiarity with its literature. I did my best; maybe on a topic like that, knowledge doesn't help much, but on literature or biology it is very necessary. So for the instructions page? I'd say "You may see your article reviewed sooner, but you may have to review an article outside your expertise, and your article may be inexpertly reviewed." (or something similar for balance; the "sooner" on its own would be too close to propaganda). Chiswick Chap (talk) 06:18, 15 April 2025 (UTC)
So, uh...
Just thought I'd let you know that, a while ago, the anon you've been reverting threatened to report anyone who dared to remove their edits to ANI; obviously I did not want to go ahead and poke the bear in spite of their warnings, so, there's that. - It's very tidy, nice work.
- 'See also' goes before 'References'.
- There's obviously quite a bit of overlap with wood and tree.
- I was expecting to see a mention of secondary thickening.
- For some reason the 'See also' list appears in full with numbering in the ToC, odd.
- I assume you're going to use it to replace Trunk (botany) which is on the same topic. Chiswick Chap (talk) 05:58, 19 April 2025 (UTC)

You said that you are simply stating the facts regarding whether or not LotR is "one of the best books" or "one of the best fantasy books" ever written, but how is the latter a fact while the former is untrue? To me, the specification of "fantasy" simply muddies the waters unnecessarily. The article for Crime and Punishment does not say it's "one of the greatest crime novels ever written." It simply says that it's one of the greatest novels ever written, and it uses thegreatestbooks.org to prove that claim (it's current placement is at 16). By specifying the genre, the suggestion is that the book is only the best *within the specific genre being talked about* and perhaps not one of the best books in general. It's the same with LotR. That same website used to prove C+P's legitimacy has LotR listed in the top 10 literary works of all time. That in itself would show that it is indeed one of the greatest books ever written, and not simply one of the best *fantasy* books ever written. Again, how is only the latter a "simple fact"? LoverofBooks101 (talk) 07:05, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
- Ah, I see these are your first two edits, so welcome to Wikipedia. FFR, going to an editor's talk page directly about such a minor matter as a word or two might be thought somewhat aggressive if coming from a more experienced editor, but never mind now. On your comments: WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS isn't an argument: many articles are poorly-written or deficient in one way or another. Recall please that if a hundred million people know that the novel is a fantasy, then several billion potential readers do not. Wikipedia is written for a general audience, not for fans. The fact that it is a fantasy is a core detail, and it is extremely well-attested. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:10, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
- The opening sentence of the article states that it's a fantasy novel. I agree that it's an important detail, but it's a detail that is given almost immediately. Are you mostly talking about people that might read the article out-of-order? LoverofBooks101 (talk) 07:18, 25 April 2025 (UTC)

New message to Chiswick Chap
First of all, sorry that I probably ended up making the gender fiasco more of a headache rather than less like I wanted.
Secondly—for some reason I'm curious, what's British English exactly about Early in his life, Tolkien, taught by his mother, made many sketches and paintings from life. Is it the use of made? Remsense ‥ 论 05:56, 26 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you. Yes, that's part of it. The wrong direction involves longer words, more circumlocutory phrases, and a diction that pauses where Brits continue, and stumbles on where we pause. Chiswick Chap (talk) 05:59, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

[1]. No, she didn't say it. There is no word "avoid" or "avoiding" in her text. Could you explain yourself? Corwin of Amber (talk) 15:40, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
- Gosh, there's really no need for that sort of abruptness, nor for insisting that we use an author's exact words, especially given that we are explicitly required to paraphrase. The article says quite clearly that in her view Tolkien preferred to say "company", not "fellowship" and the article describes her reasons for that opinion. If you have a better word than "avoid" for the mention of "fellow", no problem, but that's the drift of the article, indeed it's close to its central point really. I've added the qualification "for the Nine Walkers", as MJ observes correctly that Tolkien uses the looser term "fellow" in other contexts "for good and bad creatures alike". Hope that meets your concerns. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 17:51, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

- Sorry, I should have said that I've added a bit to the article, and that this is probably sufficient as an outline. Improvements would basically consist in summarizing more reviews from reliable sources; we can't really just describe the book in an article about the author. A separate book article would require multiple reviews, and I wouldn't advise someone in your position to attempt such a thing as you have a professional conflict of interest. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:02, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
Poem layout
If User:Verbarson/sandbox3 is of any help, use as much of it as you like. It is a bit clumsy, using a separate slice of the poetry image for each line. I haven't quite got the text translation to line up, nor managed to draw the border around the outside without borders between each line. -- Verbarson talkedits 18:01, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
- I already put 7 line-files in a table in the article. It works. If you feel the need to tweak it further, go ahead, cautiously. Ah, I see your approach instead dynamically crops the image, 7 times. That works too. Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:02, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
- I don't like the horizontal rules between each line; it breaks up what is a continuous composition, in a way that feels more disruptive than the line breaks. But I couldn't find a combination of wikitable and CSS markup that kept only the outer and header cell borders. -- Verbarson talkedits 19:16, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
- No, we don't want lines. With HTML it is certainly possible to select any borders one wishes. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:20, 3 July 2025 (UTC)

- Hello. I'm wondering why you would change the name of the category, it seemed fine. You extend the term 'modern' to deep into the 19th century. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 04:55, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- Because until the modern era with mass audiences, a "guru" was a teacher with one pupil, and the guru-shishya relationship was intensely private: there is no continuity between the modern many-followers sort of guru, and the guru-shishya tradition that preceded it for perhaps 2,000 years. Chiswick Chap (talk) 04:58, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, not enough of a difference to object.

This does remind me to get back to the Raja Yoga uppercasing. It does stand out among the various yoga forms, as it encompasses them all. N-grams are pretty conclusive as well. Do you fully object to that or see it as a viable option? Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 05:05, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- Wikipedia policy basically forbids SHOUTING and the existence of N-grams does no more than demonstrating that there are people, probably in India, who are devoted to their gurus and prepared to shout about them, typographically and otherwise. That does not mean we should do so, indeed it means we should not. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 05:08, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- ? The title 'Raja Yoga' is not shouting, it is a standard Wikipedia title. What uppercasing does is correctly denote that Raja Yoga is a proper name and is widely recognized as a proper name (unlike the other forms of yoga which do not have such a clear casing preference). Will get back to this later though. Randy Kryn (talk) 05:19, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- "RAJA YOGA" is what I mean by shouting. The term "Raja Yoga" is ancient, going all the way back to Patanjali; its use as a proper name is recent and at best confusing. Wikipedia cannot endorse the expropriation of a standard term for a single group; the most we can do is note that such usage exists. Chiswick Chap (talk) 05:23, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- We had much this exact same shouting part of the conversation, almost word for word, a little while ago. As we disagree on this one, and uppercasing seems to me to be the way to go, maybe an RM? I'll sign off for now. Randy Kryn (talk) 05:27, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- Randy Kryn: It is not that we disagree and have equally valid opinions; rather, the Wikipedia article already correctly describes the multiple traditions with different usages and histories, and shows with plenty of reliably-cited evidence that several of these usages remain current. The account is not broken and does not need to be mended. That is not an opinion, but what the evidence verifiably shows to anyone who cares to check the sources. The N-gram concurs that there are multiple usages, by the way. An RM would be wholly inappropriate in the circumstances. Chiswick Chap (talk) 05:30, 4 July 2025 (UTC)

Banana
Thinking of the effort that you put in on Banana, I was wondering if you had followed the changes to the article early in June. Just picking on one result of that, the first paragraph of the subsection "Ancient spread" (From New Guinea, cultivated bananas spread westward into Island Southeast Asia through proximity (not migrations)...... the staple domesticated crops of the Austronesian peoples and were spread via their ancient seaborne migrations and ancient maritime trading routes into Oceania, Africa, South Asia, and Indochina.
bold added.)
This paragraph is supported by three references. Looking at the extent to which these support the article saying that the banana was spread by Austronesians, particularly into Africa, these references do not support the article content. The first, (Denham, T. (2011). Early Agriculture and Plant Domestication in New Guinea and Island Southeast Asia. Current Anthropology. https://doi.org/0011-3204/2011/52S4-0015$10.00) is notable for using language like "pre-Austronesian time frame" and makes no mention of Austronesians being responsible for the movement of the banana to Africa. The second (Perrier et al) does make just one mention of "...may be associated with the migrations of Austronesian language speakers" – but that is associated with hybridisation and other genetic events, not translocation to Africa, and the word "may" is used, which is not certain enough for Wikipedia's certainty on the point. The third reference makes mention of the Austronesians, but does not make any conclusion about them taking the banana to Africa prior to their settlement of Madagascar c. 600 AD. For any prior translocations from Island Southeast Asia, no ethnic or language group is mentioned in its involvement, just the geographic source: "insular Southeast Asian".
I am not sure what the through proximity (not migrations)
bit is trying to say. None of the references use this sort of language, they are silent on the mechanism.
Normally I would add some {{failed verification}}s to the article and explain on the article talk page. However, from past experience, that would produce a vitriolic response from the editor involved, so I am not sure that my involvement would actually help the matter. By highlighting here, you can, if you wish, take a look at it and make up your own mind on the issues, then act as you see fit. If you decide to leave the matter alone, I may come back to it at another time, but not when I am working on the reading for another subject for an unrelated group of articles.
I have not looked in detail at the other edits early in June. It takes quite a while to demonstrate a failed verification. You might have a subject knowledge that gives you some short-cuts to checking that activity.

- Noted, thanks. A bit of watch and wait is probably the best policy. The whole subject of Domesticated plants and animals of Austronesia is a difficult one. Undoubtedly, Austronesians are notable for their maritime migration, when they took crop and animal species with them. The problem is that earlier inhabitants of Island Southeast Asia also had maritime technology and moved crop and animal species before Austronesian speakers left Taiwan. Added to that, the original theories of Peter Bellwood on the "Austronesian package" have turned out to be overly simplistic. Anyway, I will keep my eye on the subject and help where I can. Sorry, I wasn't clear about the Tolkien edit
Hi, I just re-removed the "but" phrase from One Ring but realized as soon as I had made the change that my edit summary left out the most important point: in this case the citation is of a primary source, Tolkien's letters, so since it's not a direct quote any editorial inference drawn from it would be original research. I feel my summary didn't adequately justify the reversion so I just wanted to clarify that. Thanks, UrielAcosta (talk) 15:45, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, but no, it exactly is not my inference, but that of the scholars I have named, cited, and summarised. This is the opposite of OR. Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:17, 22 July 2025 (UTC)

Recent Tolkien studies articles
No idea if you have access to these or have already seen them, but Aragorn, Sovereignty, and Mortality in Tolkien’s Mythic Historiography may be of interest. I am not sure what to make of it or the author's other recent publications (“In the Black Abyss There Appeared a Single Eye”: The Gaze and Self-Fragmentation in The Lord of the Rings and “It Shall Be Set in Imperishable Crystal”: A Representation of Hair Memorabilia in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings). I think it is safe to say that people are not running out of things to say! (I will try and find some good sources for what I said on that article talk page yesterday and today.) Invitation to good article review circle
Hi Chiswick Chap, I am inviting previous participants of a good article review circle to nominate another article for a circle. As you know, GARC is an excellent way to get a good article nomination reviewed more quickly and help reduce the backlog at WP:GAN. I hope you will consider participating again, and happy editing! Z1720 (talk) 19:27, 9 August 2025 (UTC)
- No thanks, one gets no choice in what to review, so it's pure shotgun wedding. Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:16, 9 August 2025 (UTC)
- Totally understand. One idea might be to occasionally look at the nominated articles at GARC and, if there's something that interests you, request in your nomination to review that specific article. Thank you for participating in a previous circle and happy editing. Z1720 (talk) 20:21, 9 August 2025 (UTC)

Regarding my edits that were reverted
So I saw that you reverted my edit on fish and you said this: "rv, not ambiguous and extremely unlikely to be confused". I have a few questions about this: Is "rv" a slang term/abbreviation for reverted? How is it not ambiguous and extremely unlikely to be confused since fiqh looks like the word fish but only for the q to be replaced with an s and some people could possibly misread fiqh as fish (When I first saw the word fiqh, I misread it as fish) DiscoveringMysteries03 (talk) 19:07, 13 August 2025 (UTC)
- "Rv" is indeed a common abbreviation for "revert"; it is not slang. A mere typo or hasty misreading is not in itself sufficient to create ambiguity; readers will quickly note their error if there's nothing more to it than that. The hatnote is meant for words that are commonly muddled together. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:10, 13 August 2025 (UTC)
- What do you mean by "A mere typo or hasty misreading is not in itself sufficient to create ambiguity; readers will quickly note their error if there's nothing more to it than that. The hatnote is meant for words that are commonly muddled together."? I'm still confused and I'm mainly not accustomed to reading and writing/typing complex and fancy words. DiscoveringMysteries03 (talk) 19:14, 13 August 2025 (UTC)
- My words are very simple, read them again. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:16, 13 August 2025 (UTC)
- What I meant by that is that I'm not familiar with reading words like "mere", "hasty", and "muddled". But I am quite familiar with "sufficient", as it means "enough". DiscoveringMysteries03 (talk) 19:19, 13 August 2025 (UTC)

I was just adding someone to my list of possible future articles and I spotted that Angela Harding had gone from red link to blue! Thanks for creating her article, probably well overdue. I seem to see her work all over the place (OK, perhaps I go to a lot of National Trust etc gift shops - I spotted a batch of her works in the shop at the Bowes Museum just recently).
I've added a couple of the sources I found. She probably needs a list of publications with publisher and isbn: I might add that some time. I wasn't sure how best to word the half-published quartet of seasonal books: her website only lists spring and summer ... ah, I see Amazon has all 4 listed, Autumn published tomorrow and winter in November. I'll tweak that text again. PamD 09:11, 27 August 2025 (UTC)

Women in Green's 9th Edit-a-thon

Hello Chiswick Chap:
WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Editathon event in October 2025!
Running from October 1 to 31, 2025, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) editathon event with the theme What Women Do! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 different occupations or professions (or broader roles in society) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.
We hope to see you there!

Re: GA discussion
Thanks for your input on the talk page. I think you might have misunderstood why I pinged you. The OP recently failed an article for being too short in their opinion. You have a lot of experience working with short articles as a reviewer, which is why I asked for your input. Anyway, it's probably moot now, but thanks for showing up. Viriditas (talk) 20:30, 4 October 2025 (UTC)
- Viriditas: Thanks for thinking of me, even if I don't consider myself anything other than a fumbling reviewer. I certainly find short articles inherently problematic qua GA. There is always a feeling that something (such as the things I mentioned over there) may be missing; and the suspicion that someone may be gaming the system. Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:34, 5 October 2025 (UTC)
- Always good to hear from you. Are you familiar with M. Scott Peck at all? I recently discovered that his Christian psychology concept of "militant ignorance" shares a lot in common with some forms of Buddhist apologetics. Ideally, I would want to write a separate, more secular article on the idea of militant ignorance, but it's pretty esoteric. Let me know if the idea rings any bells and you can point me in the right direction. Peck's writings were 50 years ahead of his time and remind me a lot of E. Graham Howe. They both seemed to pursuing the same ideas from different angles. Viriditas (talk) 23:01, 5 October 2025 (UTC)
- Esoteric indeed. I heard his name, and of Road, but that's about it. Seems like good stuff, good luck with the project! Chiswick Chap (talk) 01:07, 6 October 2025 (UTC)

Advice for researching insects
Hi! I wanted to ask you for some advice in regards to researching and improving insect articles, since you've improved a lot of heavy hitters, including the Dragonfly article. I wanted to do some work on the Eight-spotted skimmer article, but am unsure of where to start on sourcing and standards for these kinds of articles. Any help would be appreciated on where to start for something like this, even if it's just pointing me to the right resources, I'd greatly appreciate it. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 21:57, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- I've mainly done groups, which are well supported in textbooks. Individual species are documented in scientific papers (use Google Scholar), and to a limited extent in field guides. Species articles need a description, taxonomy, distribution, and if possible a little bit on their life-cycle, ecology, and any sort of folklore, though there's no point repeating standard dragonfly life-cycle etc really. A few clear photos and a map are desirable. Hope this helps! Chiswick Chap (talk) 00:13, 7 October 2025 (UTC)

One observation
The website/newspaper point got me thinking. The difference between a website and newspaper is getting ever thinner. If a print newspaper puts a story on a website, is it still a newspaper or is it now a website? Where I live practically no one gets a print newspaper anymore. Just a thought; I get your point but I'm also not so sure an article pulled from a website should be considered a newspaper anymore. Similarly if an organization takes a photo of a printed newspaper from the pre internet days and puts it on the internet, is it a news source or a web source? Just thinking here. MisawaSakura (talk) 14:52, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
- The 'paper' thing is of course just a technology, now largely replaced by bits. News is mainly consumed via the Internet, so a news site is the modern version of a newspaper, and rightly handled with "cite news". All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:55, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
- Not sure I agree with that. To me if it's on a website, it's a web source, not a newspaper. But no worries. I was just thinking on the idea. Best wishes. MisawaSakura (talk) 15:53, 11 October 2025 (UTC)

Including excerpt in Uprooted (novel)
In the summary of your edit adding back the quote in Uprooted (novel), you say that this use is encyclopedic and that it gives encyclopedia readers a specific idea of the nature of the work so the rest of the text makes sense in its context.
I'm not sure what you mean by "so the rest of the text makes sense in its context", but I have to disagree with this. First, the use isn't encyclopedic, because it doesn't appear in encyclopedias. That is, standalone quotes in articles about books don't appear either in other encyclopedias or in other articles in Wikipedia.
But also, it makes the article worse, not better. There's nothing noteworthy about the style of the book, so including the excerpt just wastes a reader's time and puzzles them.
Why do you think this book, unlike all the other books on Wikipedia, deserves a quotebox? Danbloch (talk) 04:36, 23 October 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for discussing. I do not understand why you even begin to find the quote problematic, as a quotation is permitted under fair use both within the law and within Wikipedia. On context, the style and content of the book is directly illustrated in the quote. On being encyclopedic, this is notoriously vague in discussions, as everyone has their own view, and paper books have limitations that electronic encyclopedias do not. There are of course quotations in thousands of articles of all kinds, and there is no reason whatever why book articles should be forbidden them. The assertion that it makes the article worse is simply absurd: you are here arguing that a reader who can see what is being written about is less well informed than one who cannot, which is plainly false. On "nothing noteworthy about the style", you are missing the straightforward point that by presenting a sample, the reader is enabled to judge for themselves, rather than having a presumably all-knowing editor know better than them what is good for them; you are imagining that one style is more "noteworthy" than another, which is bizarre; and you are assuming that a style even needs to be noteworthy for a quotation to be helpful, which is simply false, as seeing what style (and other attributes of the text) is employed is in itself informative. On wasting the reader's time, no reader has ever been troubled by a quote box: the format instantly indicates "here is a side box, read me only if you are interested", so no, the format explicitly enables the reader to choose to read it or not, just as readers can choose to read just the lead and not the body, and so on. Your final question is plainly rhetorical, not expecting any answer; I don't accept the premise that books never use quotations as that's simply ridiculous, and as I've just said, putting the quotation in a box is helpful in itself to those readers who just want the conclusions, not the evidence, as well as to those with a few moments more time who want both. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:36, 23 October 2025 (UTC)
- Sorry, no. There's no chance of us reaching common ground on this so I'll move the discussion to the talk page.
- To address a couple of your statements, I'm troubled by this quote box, so your claim that no reader has ever been troubled by a quote box is clearly wrong. And my last question was not rhetorical, so things which are plain to you may not be true. Danbloch (talk) 02:56, 24 October 2025 (UTC)
- So we each think the other mistaken. By "reader" I do mean normal visitor, people who come to Wikipedia to read for information i.e. not including people who spend their time editing. I will say one thing: you are arguing from WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, the "a million flies can't be wrong eating poo" argument, which is neither good sense nor Wikipedia policy. Chiswick Chap (talk) 04:20, 24 October 2025 (UTC)

- Bgsu98: It feels nightmarish, and it's hoovering up far too much of my time. Do you think the bee and bumblebee edits were AI? Some of them were certainly pretty awful. AI detection
We're using Pangram.com, an AI detection service that seems to be by far the best of what's available (according to the research Sage did into the topic). We're running student edits above a certain threshold through it, and sending them an email asking them not to paste content from LLMs into Wikipedia. If they do it more than once, we're supposed to involve their instructors. There are some false positives, and we've adjusted what we run through their detector to avoid some of the obvious things. But it's decent.
(You can do 5 blocks of I think 400 words per day for free if you create an account with them. I can also do some checks for you if you email me.) Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:44, 23 October 2025 (UTC)
- User:Chiswick Chap: I ran Anoxic microsites in soil through Pangram and it also returned a find of 100% AI generated. However, I ran some of the responses on the user's talk page through, and they came back 100% human generated. I don't know what's going on with the bee articles. It looks like the user tried to merge content from Bees and toxic chemicals. User:Ian (Wiki Ed): The user has also created this article – Elmet s.l.u – but I am out of credits for the day to use Pangram. Bgsu98 (Talk) 22:42, 23 October 2025 (UTC)

- Hi, I see you've done a good bit of work on the article. It seems to be well-constructed and properly cited. The article only has 2 images, which seems very few: at least they cover the tree's habit, leaves, and fruits. Can we find images of the flowers? Bark? And what about a pic of a Bonsai of the species? And I'd certainly want a pic of Dasyscyphella longistipitata. Could we construct a map of distribution within Japan? I'm not sure why F. ferruginea is a dab link, either. I think the article is basically in good shape now, and should be an easy GA. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:43, 25 October 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the input! I made my own distro map, added in bark (winter) and bonsai. I can't find a free image of Dasyscyphella longistipitata or a good one of flowers--there really isn't room for them anyway. It'll be on GAN in a few minutes and we'll see what happens. I just sent Quercus crispula to GAN. Beech
Beech -- would you like to work together on this to get it to FA? I see you recently got it to GA. MisawaSakura (talk) 00:38, 30 October 2025 (UTC)
- MisawaSakura, I'm happy to stand on the sidelines and answer the occasional question as best I may, but I don't have the time to do an FA myself just now. I assume you're aware that FAC takes a month of quite intensive effort, and that's not counting the preparation and polishing that is needed beforehand. The "comprehensive" criterion is quite different from GAN's "main points"; for me it's a moot point how an article of only some thousands of words can comprehensively cover any topic on which whole books have been written, but some effort has to be made to address the content of any reasonably recent book, such as Richard Mabey's Beechcombings. In addition, every citation has to be immaculately presented. Good luck with the project! Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:30, 30 October 2025 (UTC)

Trolls
Hello! Just wanted to ask for a bit of clarification on the removal of the members info from the infobox; I am sure I am the one who is mistaken in including it, I'd just like to clarify it. The Hobbit obviously does have a very different tone to other Legendarium content but it's meant to be part of that same continuity. I know it is framed as Tolkien's translation of Bilbo's Red Book, and thus information can be unreliable, but the three trolls are seen in The Lord of the Rings by the Hobbits and Aragorn as well. Is it the English names which are the issue? Sorry to bother you, just wanted to ask so I don't repeat the same mistake in the future. Paccyd33 (talk) 13:15, 27 November 2025 (UTC)
- No worries: I don't think you did anything wrong, but it's an unusual case. Tolkien's trolls are rather sharply discontinuous between TH and LOTR. In TH they speak, they sound like English working class, indeed Cockneys; they live like tramps in the woods and steal sheep and mainly squabble amongst themselves; and they seem to be entirely independent of any lords and masters. In LOTR they are silent, definitely Sauron's enslaved warriors, and unquestionably on the side of evil. Shippey is good on all this. The 3 TH trolls reappear, dead, in LOTR, and have nothing in common with the trolls who feature later in battle.
The reason for the sharp discontinuity is Tolkien's moral dilemma, where he realised that by making the Trolls speak he was enabling them to have a moral sense, in which case they surely had souls ... which was problematic for the Catholic Tolkien. The article explains the matter in detail! Enjoy it. Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:07, 27 November 2025 (UTC)
- Just read them; very interesting stuff. So, the infobox should not have the 3 trolls from The Hobbit listed as members due to the incongruity with the wider Legendarium? Paccyd33 (talk) 13:57, 29 November 2025 (UTC)
- I see what you're thinking. I guess that just listing the 3 TH trolls is ok: it's certainly less of an issue than trying to state general rules for trolldom when they're included as they'd then be exceptions. Better, I think, is to include them (after all, they're certainly Middle-earth) and to stay away from inferring any general rules, which after all is pretty close to editorialising. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:01, 29 November 2025 (UTC)
