Speedy renaming and merging

[edit]

If the category and desired change do not match one of the criteria mentioned in C2, do not list it here. Instead, list it in the main CFD section.

If you are in any doubt as to whether it qualifies, do not list it here.

Use the following format on a new line at the beginning of the list:

* :Category:old name to :Category:new name – Reason ~~~~

If the current name should be redirected rather than deleted, use:

* REDIRECT :Category:old name to :Category:new name – Reason ~~~~

To note that human action is required, e.g. updating a template that populates the category, use:

* NO BOTS :Category:old name to :Category:new name – Reason ~~~~

Remember to tag the category page with:

A request may be completed if it is more than 48 hours old; that is, if the time stamp shown is earlier than 15:11, 30 May 2025 (UTC). Currently, there are 52 open requests (refresh).

Current requests

[edit]

Please add new requests at the top of the list, preferably with a link to the parent category (in case of C2C) or relevant article (in case of C2D).

Opposed requests

 • Adam of Macedonia is in Category:Prehistory of North Macedonia. I've noticed both categories I listed are further categorized with Greece-specific subcats, and started off as such (before older renaming). But they cannot have a wide-scope name and a smaller-scope content. If they are functionally Greece-specific categories (and that's what they are) their name needs to reflect that. NEW NOMINATIONS

[edit]

Category:Actors of Latin American descent

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: This only contains categories for specific countries and continents. I don't think that this is very helpful for navigation SMasonGarrison 13:13, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Hamas most wanted playing cards

[edit]
Convert Category:Hamas most wanted playing cards to article Hamas most wanted playing cards
Convert Category:Most-wanted Iraqi playing cards to article Most-wanted Iraqi playing cards
Nominator's rationale: I don't think that being featured on "Most-wanted Iraqi playing cards" or "Hamas most wanted playing cards" is a defining feature for individuals being featured. It seems more like a product, akin to baseball cards. I think that these are better served as lists. I happy to be convinced otherwise, but this seems like a classic categories aren't lists. SMasonGarrison 13:07, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Years and decades in pre-existing Romania

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: merge, isolated and mostly single-article categories, this is not helpful for navigation. This nomination does not contain any 19th-century categories. In a later nomination I will propose to merge those to decades rather than to centuries. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:53, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Ambassadors of Aragon

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: merge, only one article in this category, this is not helpful for navigation. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:21, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:1500th anniversary of Kyiv

Category:Activists from Akita Prefecture

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Category with just one entry. No need for merging. Lost in Quebec (talk) 09:04, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Aragon

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: rename for consistency with parent Category:People from the Crown of Aragon. The Kingdom of Aragon was just one of the crown lands of the Crown of Aragon and for categorization it is not meaningful (or maintainable) to make a distinction between the Crown and the Kingdom. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:57, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Comment. If renamed, can we leave redirects to help with template maintenance? It'll make it easier to transition the category. SMasonGarrison 13:14, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: rename and disambiguate, the header says that it is for maritime navigators (not for flight navigators) but editors who categorize do not have to visit this page and may easily add flight navigators. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:13, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Early colonists in America

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: merge, "early" is quite vague and in practice this category has been populated with 17th-century people, which makes the two categories coincide in purpose. One may wonder if the name of the target is well chosen, but let's leave that for a different discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:30, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:English male characters in soap operas

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: This is an overly specific category - most of the articles are located in the English subcategory with very few in the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish subcategories. This category has led to a lot of fictional characters being allocated the wrong category and has made the process harder, so I am proposing a merge (if someone could please add Category:Scottish male characters in soap operas, Category:Northern Irish male characters in soap operas and Category:Welsh male characters in soap operas to this discussion I would be extremely grateful). History of Transylvania by period

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: split, aligning periodization with other countries and regions, without arbitrary intermediate cutoffs. Category:Jewish-American gangs

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Functionally the same as Category:Jewish-American organized crime, which is associated with the topic's main article Jewish-American organized crime and includes coverage of gangs (including subcat Category: Jewish American gangsters]] Longhornsg (talk) 00:55, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Do not change Looking at the gang parent categories and the organized crime parent categories finds they are different in general, and the Jewish categories are no different than the rest of ethnic categories here. Looking at the child categories and articles here just confirms this. No special treatment is warranted here. Hmains (talk) 01:49, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What is "special treatment"? How are the two categories different? Longhornsg (talk) 02:09, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
the special treatment is that it would then fit into the current gang parent category: Category:European-American gangs and its parents. This is about gangs and it belongs into the gangs category tree. Thanks Hmains (talk) 00:03, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:North Carolina State University articles missing geocoordinate data

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Empty maintenance category from a project with <200 articles (most of which are biographies that don't need coordinates). Even if the project becomes active again, these maintenance categories are unlikely to be needed - there's unlikely to be any significant number of additional articles needing coordinates. Category:Popes of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria

Category:Buildings and structures in Sweden by municipality

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: To reduce the number of levels of Category:Buildings and structures in Sweden to Category:Buildings and structures in Sweden by county and Category:Buildings and structures in Sweden by city. The nominated categories are often sparsely populated as most buildings and structures are in a populated place. Category:Buildings and structures in Sweden by city is more developed than this category tree. Eventual champion elimination seasons

[edit]

These categories run contrary to the guideline sections WP:NONDEF:

a defining characteristic is one that reliable, secondary sources commonly and consistently define, in prose, the subject as having.

if the characteristic would not be appropriate to mention in the lead section of an article (regardless of whether it is currently mentioned in the lead), it is probably not defining.

and WP:TRIVIALCAT:

Avoid categorizing topics by characteristics that are unrelated or wholly peripheral to the topic's notability.

Nominating for deletion. Left guide (talk) 00:11, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This is to categorize teams that were eliminated by eventual champions.
In addition, this is part of franchise histories, and the only sources are, of course, the leagues' histories. These categories would get multiple teams. Mario662629 (talk) 00:26, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

the only sources are, of course, the leagues' histories.

Are there independent sources that provide serious treatment of this concept? Editorial decisions on Wikipedia are generally based more on the weight of what independent sources say, and less on what organizations (such as sports leagues) say about themselves and their connected activities. Category:Redundant infobox title param

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: This category is used to track unnecessary uses of title and name parameters in infoboxes, yet it is only utilized by a small number of comics-related infoboxes:
As the category's description says, "If the page is moved or merged the title needs to be re-added to the infobox." Because of this, there should be no reason to mark these usages as "redundant", as the duplicated information is perfectly acceptable, as it is with all other infoboxes. ~ Eejit43 (talk) 20:34, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:16th-century Canadian people

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Category for a single person, on a characteristic that wasn't even applicable to her. The person here was an Inuit woman from Baffin Island, which is certainly in Canada now but was not part of Canada as it existed within her lifetime -- and since France didn't actually start sending any real number of settlers to Canada until 1608, there really isn't anybody else who could be refiled here in lieu. So we don't need this for just one person from a place that didn't even become part of Canada until almost 300 years after her death.
Upmerging not needed, as she's already in other appropriate subcategories of Category:16th-century North American people. Bearcat (talk) 18:02, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Band frontmen

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Category not usefully defining of its contents, as it's effectively indiscriminate and virtually unmaintainable. "Frontman" is not a defined role in its own right, but is just sometimes used by music writers as an alternative to repeating the word "singer" over and over again, and thus there isn't a functional distinction between being the "frontman" and being the "singer". So essentially, this should contain every single person who is or was the lead singer of any band at all -- but just 14 (now 20) people have actually been filed here, and it's painfully easy to think of hundreds upon thousands of other obvious notables who've been overlooked.
Update: Roger Daltrey, Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell, David Gilmour and Tom Petty, the exact five people I specifically named as oversights in the original version of this nomination statement, just conveniently happen to have been added to this category after I mentioned them here, without any real further effort to add any of the other several thousand band frontmen that I didn't specifically call attention to — besides those five, the only other new entry that's been added at all is Kurt Cobain. But since two of the five I did call attention to were Vedder and Cornell, that doesn't prove that the creator's actually making an effort to properly populate this with all of its potential entries, and just proves that they went "oh yeah Seattle grunge bands whoops bye".
And we've also seen (and gotten bogged down in) more than one iteration of the argument that even a "solo" artist is technically also the "frontman" of an eponymously-named "band" of session musicians (e.g. the time somebody tried to create an article about "Natalie Imbruglia (band)" as a separate topic from Natalie Imbruglia the person), not to mention the fact that even singers in bands often also release solo recordings separately from their day jobs and/or go solo after the band breaks up too — so it doesn't even cleanly distinguish between singers in bands versus solo artists either.
We have a longstanding consensus that we don't categorize singers for the distinction between "lead singer" and "backing singer" -- since any singer can be a lead vocalist on some recordings and a backing vocalist on others, it's an utterly useless distinction -- but this is effectively just "Lead singers" by another name, and thus doesn't escape that consensus. Children's books set in early modern history

Nominator's rationale: merge, mostly one- or two-article categories, which is not helpful for navigation. After 1600 some articles are possibly already in a fiction by year category which necessitates a manual merge. The 1770s and 1780s should also be manually merged to the other target because most articles are already in Category:Children's books set during the American Revolutionary War. Nominator's rationale: Extremely specific - whilst the British and English female character templates have 100s of pages, the Welsh, Northern Irish and Scottish ones only have a few, and the British and English ones seem to be used interchangeably, so I believe the NI, Welsh, English and Scottish ones should be merged (not all of the categories obviously, just "female characters in soap operas". Category:Public Research Organisations in New Zealand

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: As there are 4 "Public Research Organisations" in New Zealand, the category will at most contain 4 articles plus 1 eponymous one, only 2 of which currently exist. Gjs238 (talk) 22:52, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for letting me know about the discussion @Gjs238. I'm not wedded to having the category but I made it because we have one for Crown Research Institutes, which are being replaced by PROs. The research institutes category contains a number of different types of organisation - individual labs, institutes at universities, CRIs and PROs, which I think is quite messy and difficult to navigate if you don't already know what these things are (there's also a lot of existing and historical orgs with Wp pages missing from the category, which I've put on my to do list to address). So having a subcat for the things we can cleanly delineate (like CRIs and PROs) made sense to me.
Also noting that three PROs currently exist - the third is being rebranded from a reorganised Institute of Environmental Science and Research. I hadn't added the category to that page yet as I was hoping for more info to come out that would help me decide if it should be dealt with as a section on the existing page, or if the reorganisation is drastic enough to merit a new organisational page (I've added the cat now, though, for what it's worth). We know at the moment that this current government plans four PROs but there is no reason to suspect that the number wouldn't change in the future.
I don't hang out in category discussions much so will leave the decision up to you, but thought these considerations might be useful. For future reference, what's the minimum number of pages for a viable category? DrThneed (talk) 23:30, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:American political activists

Nominator's rationale: Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't activism always political? I don't understand the distinction here. This also applies to everything in Category:Political activists by nationality -- I can list them all out if needed. Prezbo (talk) 11:21, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose: Political activist and three other redirects with "political" in the name all lead to activism, which could imply what the nominator is suggesting. However, the activism article does distinguish political activism as a specific method of activism, which leads me to believe that no, activism isn't always political. On top of that, both American political activists and American activists have hundreds of entries, and the other subcats of Political activists by nationality have dozens more, so there's valuable diffusion done here. Category:Communists oppose the Chinese Communist Party

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Clearly mistitled new category (perhaps "Communists who oppose..."?), but irredeemable due to its binary nature. For example, Japanese Communist Party has been added to the category, but a cursory glance of that article indicates that there are both pro- and anti- sentiments towards the Chinese Communist Party. This appears to be WP:POV-pushing. Dorsetonian (talk) 11:11, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Keep. There are certainly people who are communists and who are against the CCP, and they are relatively minor among the communists (especially the Leninist line), so they need to be classified individually. In addition, when it comes to the description or use of categories in articles usually related to existing political parties, the most emphasis is placed on the 'present'. Medieval Romanian nobility

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: split, as Romania is anachronistic. Wallachia and Moldavia merged to Romania in the 19th century. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:33, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
 • Oppose under the nominator's rationale, figures like Litovoi or Bărbat being "Wallachian" is anachronistic, while Transylvanian figures like Gelou do not fit in the proposed merge. The current category reflects the ethnic background of the nobility and the national historiography of which they are interest. Super Ψ Dro 09:26, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
"Vlach" is an exonym encompassing multiple ethnic groups. In such a category would also fit Nikoulitzas Delphinas, who is more commonly discussed in academia regarding the Aromanian ethnic group, or Ivanko (boyar), to whom attributing a precise ethnicity would probably be controversial. In any case, with a "Vlach" category we would be just recreating the nominated category, but with a broader and more vague scope. I consider it superior to group together figures with a clear shared ethnic background and common coverage in the national historiography of a country. The figures I mentioned in my first comment are relevant because they undoubtedly fit in the category even if it hasn't been added to their articles. Furthermore, the use of "Romanian" is not anachronistic as it refers to the Romanian ethnic group here. We also have Category:Slovak nobility for figures that lived in a period when there was no Slovak state for the same reason, as well as Category:Slovene nobility.
If the nominated category is considered problematic, it could just be merged to Category:Romanian nobility. Super Ψ Dro 12:19, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
 • With establishments specifically the current consensus seems to be that if the subject still exists today then the article can be listed in an establishment of today's country. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:03, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
