Questionable AWB edit

[edit]

What was this edit for? It looks like it did nothing to the rendered page, a violation of the AWB rules. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:38, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Jonesey95Deleted the second space after ISBN in the run-on, which I believe to be part of the "Apply general fixes". And yes, pretty minor, if you choose to revert, go ahead.Naraht (talk) 14:44, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:AWBRULES, rule 4. Please edit with more care. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:03, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Jonesey95Fair. I will try to do so. It does lead to the question as to *why* AWB can be run with the various skip options on minor changes able to be turned off. But doesn't make it less needed to be watched. Naraht (talk) 15:06, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

TRACS article, History section

[edit]

Hello Naraht! Just following up to see if you noticed my ping on the TRACS Talk page? I was looking to see if you had any additional feedback on my proposed TRACS History section. Again, thanks for all your help so far with improving the page! Andy at TRACS (talk) 18:07, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again! Checking in to see if you saw my answer to your question on the TRACS Talk page? Thanks Andy at TRACS (talk) 19:45, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Andy at TRACS Yes, I did, but got distracted. I'll try to get it this weekend. Since this is more complex, I'm probably going to just make larger changes related to this myself on the article and then we can go from there.Naraht (talk) 20:09, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Naraht: Thanks! Let me know if you have questions. Andy at TRACS (talk) 20:23, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Naraht: Good day, if there is anything I can answer or provide you to assist in making the larger or more complex changes, please let me know! I truly appreciate your time and efforts! Have a great day.
Andy at TRACS Don't think so, but thank you for bugging me.Naraht (talk) 23:11, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Your 'specify for autolink' edits

[edit]

Hi Naraht. I'd reviewed some of your recent edits to the "Type" parameter in the infoboxes, switching from Wikilinks to the words "Social Fraternity", etc. In the case of Ceres, which is legally a women's fraternity, it may create confusion for those who do not know that some of the women's groups use that term. Is there an option to include a template parameter redirect where these few dozen women's fraternities can be called maybe "Social Fraternity (women's)" ?

Noting also how the Type parameter works for Service fraternities, instead of the bare word "Service" it should include the word "Fraternity". It's just clearer that way. Jax MN (talk) 01:16, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Jax MNI messed up on Ceres. It should have been Social Fraternity or Social Women's Fraternity. I'll fix. And as for Service, I think both Service and Service Fraternity will be displayed as the same. Fraternity and Sorority are specified for social because they'll link to different pages. And please push back on Template talk:Infobox fraternity as to what the preferred term to actually be typed. Whatever is first for a group is the preferred, I guess.Naraht (talk) 01:21, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Extraction issue

[edit]

I found a PDF history of Phi Alpha Delta that lists of all chapters (law school, alumnni/gradaute, and pre-law chapters). However, the lists are in alphabetical order by school name, rather than the chapter name or charter date. This data should be perfect for a drop into Excel so that it can be sorted correctly before creating an article. However, I have been unable to extract the data in its rows, despite that fact that it is clearly in rows in the PDF. Can you take a look and see if you can figure out how to make this work? These lists are too long to manually create IMO. Here is a link to the PDF, with the lists being on pages 195-206. Thanks. Also, just realized we live near each other--I am a couple of house away from D.C. in the valley of Virginia. Rublamb (talk) 17:51, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Rublamb If it helps identify where I am, Connecticut Avenue and Georgia Avenue eventually cross about 7 miles north of the DC line. I can walk to that crossing from my house.
The PDF is particularly wierd in that if you try to copy a chunk from that section, the partial pages (200 & 203), grab everything from one column before moving to the next while all of the full pages grab rows. I'll see what I can do. Oddly, my Linux environment and vi may prove more useful. At worst, I expect comma delimited, which we can make what we want. What order do you want? We also have a lot of information on the changes of names and locations in the area around 114.
Rublamb Initial pull of the law school chapters at User:Naraht/PDD1. Let me know how you want it massaged. May need a slightly different tack on the other ones. I have my corporate version of Excel, so all of the bells and whistles on bringing it in, once I had the tabs in the appropriate places.Naraht (talk) 02:44, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank goodness you could get it to work! I would like to sort into charter date order. I had not noticed the crazy format of the college names. I guess we can use text to column (at the comma) and concatenate to reassemble in the correct format? Rublamb (talk) 03:04, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
First time I did it, I had it in charter date order. I deliberately sliced off the City/State at the hyphen. Not sure much can be done by the editor to put the school names back together like "Bridgeport, University of, School of Law". I reordered it, check now.Naraht (talk) 03:26, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for getting into charter order. Yeah, since not all college names have the unusual format, my suggestion above will not work. But fixing a few names is nothing compared to manually entering the data. Rublamb (talk) 03:32, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Date templates? Rublamb (talk) 03:41, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You mean dts? Already there. when I put it into excel, I made the format for the dates {{\d\t\s|yyyy|mm|dd}} which dropped them in correctly. :)Naraht (talk) 03:44, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

List of Greek organizations on campuses

[edit]

Hi @Naraht, hope you are doing well. I have a question for you. I recently had an edit deleted from the SUNY Oswego page where I had listed the greek organizations on campus. The user who deleted the edit said "Most Wikipedia editors agree that rote listings of Greek institutions are not helpful if there is no sourcing from outside the college's or university's homepage or the fraternity's own circle." Are you aware of editors agreeing on this? He had some other points but that statement raised my interest. If you're interested you can take a look at it [[1]]. Hi, I provided several citations to prove the notability of this album. Examples are online shows they have performed on like KEXP and the documentary movie made about the lead singer, Strange Negotiations. It is also notable for being the origin point of the group. There are already eight other Pedro the Lion albums that were decided to be notable and therefore listed on Wikipedia. Mukilman (talk) 03:32, 10 July 2025 (UTC) Mukilman (talk) 03:30, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Mukilman Strange Negotiations should be used as a reference, rather than using phrasing like "As you can tell on this performance". I don't see individual notability, which would require three references at least as good as the review of the 12/20 performance. I'd use It's Hard to Find a Friend as a guide, especially having three reviews of the album. I'm not saying that the article about that Album is great in terms of references, but I think it represents the minimum needed.Naraht (talk) 03:46, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

TRACS article: Notable Proponents of Creation Science

[edit]

Dear Naraht, I hope you don't mind me replying to your question not relating to improving the TRACS article here.

The Creation Science movement arose in the mid-twentieth century; none of the persons listed on the next two pages earned their doctoral degrees from any Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS) member institutions, but from a comprehensive university, almost always public. Founders and current popular advocate:

Henry M. Morris, Ph.D. - Often called the "father of the modern Creation Science movement," Henry M. Morris co-authored the influential book, The Genesis Flood, in 1961. He also founded the Institute for Creation Research (ICR). Morris earned his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Rice University in 1939 and his master's (1948) and Ph.D. (1950) in hydraulic engineering from the University of Minnesota.

Duane Gish, Ph.D. - Duane Gish was a prolific speaker and debater for the Creation Science movement, often engaging in public debates against evolutionary scientists. He was a vice president at the Institute for Creation Research (ICR) and a co-founder of the Creation Research Society. Gish received his B.S. in chemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1953.

Ken Ham is the founder and CEO of the creationist ministry Answers in Genesis (AiG), which operates the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter theme park. While he is not known for scientific research, he is a major figure in the movement due to his apologetics and evangelism efforts. Ham has a bachelor's degree in applied science from the Queensland Institute of Technology and a diploma of education from the University of Queensland, both in Australia.

Andy at TRACS Far better here. I should have asked on your page rather than the Article talk page. Some comments on some of the schools/people that don't tend to fit the pattern (Most *certainly* do).
1) For Bergman, Columbia Pacific University seems like a school that *would* have considered TRACS as an option if it had existed at the time. And it is unclear to me from this an other things on the web whether he received a PhD from anywhere else.
2) Loma Linda University, I'm not sure if that school counts as secular or comprehensive.
3) For Agard, is University of Toranto a mispelling of Toronto or some other school?
Also, on another topic, I'm actually surprised there isn't an article on TRACS at creationwiki.orgNaraht (talk) 14:28, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Reference Changes

[edit]

Hello Naraht! I noticed that you are actively changing the references in the Hands of the Cause article. I suppose that must be Wikipedia’s requirement. However, I am puzzled. Would you please share the reason and how it is done, so I might be able to do it myself and save you all the work? Thank you.Bineshgardi (talk) 03:40, 21 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

BineshgardiYou aren't doing anything wrong, it just happens that some tweeks for improvement can be done. While Special Booksearch can be used (and annoyingly can be easier in visual editing), the ISBN template not only calls it, it allows for additional flexibility including having the template automatically generate an entry in a category if the ISBN is wrong and can also handle ISSN values for magazines. It should not display that differently. Also, similar advantages occur when the ISBN is inside a cite book or cite web rather than using the ISBN template directly. I also use a fairly powerful tool AutoWikiBrowser for doing that on dozens of pages.
Another improvement that I'm going to start doing by hand is to merge refs. the article has a *lot* of references that are taken from the same book, just with different pages. Using the template:rp and merging refs will help with that. I'll start it out tonight and try to advance it tomorrow..Naraht (talk) 04:35, 21 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Naraht! Do you think I could use the template:rp. I haven't done it before but I think I can learn. However, since I am not in your position, I'm wondering if the template is available to me too? Bineshgardi (talk) 17:49, 25 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely. While I have some Userrights that a new user won't, using templates isn't affected. You can take a look at the template:rp page for help. If you are using the Visual Editor, let me know, I can walk you through on that. And most of the Userrights just are bigger mops. :) Let me know if you want me to take a look at your changes.Naraht (talk) 18:11, 25 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That is very encouraging, Naraht. Thanks! I will check out the template and see how it works. If I get to a dead end, I might get back to you.): Your offer to walk me through, and also, your active merging of the references in the article are much appreciated. /I\ Bineshgardi (talk) 18:33, 25 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Really broken search situation

[edit]

I don't know why your unanswered post was archived to Wikipedia:Help desk/Archive 71#Really broken search situation. There is no carriage return in the string. The problem is that your search insource:/Charter date and range/ fraternity has a double space in "date and" while using insource:/.../ which makes an exact match on every character (actually a regex search, see H:INSOURCE) and finds no page with the double space. For me, the top of the seach results page says: "Showing results for fraternitys. No results found for insource:/Charter date and range/ fraternity." Perfoming a similar search instead is normal when no result is found. "next 20" gives the next results on the same similar search. I don't know preciseluy how the similar search is chosen but it's the same for everybody and unrelated to whether you have made that search before. There are many results on insource:"Charter date and range" fraternity which uses quotation marks and not regex so the double space is ignored. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:01, 27 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Changshi. When you were adding content to the page, you added duplicate arguments to a template which can cause issues with how the template is rendered. Missing crests

[edit]

Naraht, did you / would you create a tracking category that shows both missing "crest" and missing "member badge" parameters? One of Fran's contacts, named Christopher Walker, is a pin collector with a vast trove of photos. I've linked him in to the missing badge param, and suspect that he will be able to provide many photos -- crests, member badges, pledge pins and possibly flags. He hasn't yet been a Project participant, but is very interested, and sees us as allies in his own work (as does Fran). I'd first been communicating with him about Black Badge, and his response was exceptional. Loads of information. Pinging Rublamb too.

As to badges, I know that a good substitution could be the list of pages missing the image_size param, but a direct category tracker for the two optional crest params would be preferable. We also may be able to tap into Christopher's list of pledge pins. I've begun a conversation with him about how to upload and license his photos, and what the copyright police require. This should clear the way for a host of article improvements. Jax MN (talk) 00:15, 29 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I will have to double check, but I believe I set these to be findable by using petscan for articles with infoboxfrat and a photo request on their talkpage. At least, I went through a flagged all that have no COA or Crest image with the photo request tag. We have yet to resolve the issue of badge images being used for COA/Crest fields in terms of reporting; that will involve either a third field option for the main photo and manually moving badge photos to the new field OR committing to moving badge photos to the badge field and leaving the main photo field empty. Rublamb (talk) 00:44, 29 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, petscan still works for this. See https://petscan.wmcloud.org/?psid=39356563 Rublamb (talk) 00:49, 29 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Jax MN given what Rublamb has indicated, is this still needed and do you need a combined category, or one for each?Naraht (talk) 17:31, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think this is good for now. Christopher and I have been talking, and he has been sending some of the research tools the pin collectors use. For example, a Baird's index (Excel sheets) listing and cross-referencing all organizations. I'll let you know. With him, and another source I just found, we may have a small subproject to upload badge JPGs for many groups. Jax MN (talk) 07:34, 3 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's great. Are these photos that can be added to Wikicommons? Rublamb (talk) 07:37, 3 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Either Commons or English Wiki. Jax MN (talk) 20:12, 3 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

ISBN template

[edit]

Hello, I note that you are using AWB to add {{ISBN}} where needed. Could I suggest that you also use {{Format ISBN}} as well. The syntax is

{{ISBN|{{Format ISBN|unformatted ISBN}}}}

which will change

9781501169717

to

{{ISBN|978-1-5011-6971-7}}

(At least, it will after AnomieBOT works its magic)

Regards --Lexiconaut (talk) 02:44, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

LexiconautHmm. I thought the appropriate bot was smart enough to format anything unformatted in ISBN. Let me take a look at my AWB to see if I can change it so a match that doesn't have hyphens at all would have Format ISBN substituted instead. Unfortunately, getting it so that a partial format 978-1234567890 ends up as Format ISBN instead would be difficult. I guess the question is what is the disadvantage of *always* using format ISBN, will the bot change it to standard ISBN without change if it is correctly formatted?Naraht (talk) 12:39, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
LexiconautNow that I've looked at it, I realized that you use format ISBN inside of ISBN. I've got AWB on my home computer rather than here, I'll do some experiments in the next few days and ask you if they have been changed appropriately.Naraht (talk) 12:43, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It would be great if {{cite}} templates formatted ISBNs, but I've no idea if that can or will happen. {{Format ISBN}} will correctly format an ISBN that already includes incorrect or incomplete hyphens, so both 978-1501169717 and 97-8-1-5-0-1169717 will be formatted to 978-1-5011-6971-7. If the ISBN is already correctly formatted, {{Format ISBN}} will have no effect. Regards --Lexiconaut (talk) 16:43, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Lexiconaut changing the cases where blahblahSpecial:booksourceblah9780123456789 to {{ISBN|{{Format ISBN|9870123456789}}}} isn't going to be tough, it is the ones where it is stuck inside a cite that are going to be more interesting. Looks like I get to learn how to do subst. :)Naraht (talk) 17:42, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Lexiconaut . I've added this change to the Find and replaces in AWB. Example is Dorothee Schlegel under publications. My question is why shouldn't a bot (since it seems too large for AWB) go through and change *every* {{ISBN|9780123456789}} to {{ISBN|{{Format ISBN}}}} in all of en wikipedia? there are several structures of numbers that are known to not be correct. 13 straight digits, 10 straight digits, 978-(10 digits), 979-(10 digits).Naraht (talk) 03:18, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That is a great question and I've no idea why not. We could change all instances of <ref>9780123456789</ref> to {{ISBN|{{Format ISBN|9780123456789}}}} as well. --Lexiconaut (talk) 03:41, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Lexiconaut Someone at WP:VPI pointed me to Wikipedia:Village_pump_(policy)/Archive_188#RfC:_Standardizing_ISBN_formatting_(and_an_end_to_editwarring_about_it). So there is officially no standardization. Doesn't stop me from adding it to the changes from Booksearch, but does mean no global effort.Naraht (talk) 20:18, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, that's a lot of talk about a few digits and hyphens! --Lexiconaut (talk) 01:20, 21 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Populating category

[edit]

I saw that a category you created, Category:Student organizations established in 1945 has not been used on more than one page. According to the guideline Wikipedia:Categorization, categories should be populated with multiple articles. Please help by adding other articles to the categories you create. You can take a look at the categorization FAQ. Please populate the categories you make with more than one page. SMasonGarrison 05:00, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
