ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:34, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of states with limited recognition, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Free association. Speedy deletion nomination of Earl Mayberry Johnson

[edit]

Hello JSwift49,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Earl Mayberry Johnson for deletion, because it's a redirect from an article title to a namespace that's not for articles.

If you don't want Earl Mayberry Johnson to be deleted, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed! Unfortunately, it has not been accepted because it included copyrighted content, which is not permitted on Wikipedia. You are welcome to write an article on the subject, but please do not use copyrighted work. RPSkokie (talk) 14:43, 6 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Egypt men's national ice hockey team requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, such as at Articles for deletion. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Hi. I'm reverted the redirection and move because I'm not quite sure what you were trying to do there. Could you please clarify? Thanks. InfiniteNexus (talk) 00:17, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sure I just saw the draft and since it was basically the same as an existing article I thought I'd move it to a useful redirect (and make the number of draft pages smaller). JSwift49 00:20, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying. Drafts are automatically deleted after six months of inactivity, per WP:G13, so there's really no need to do that. If you redirect a draft, automatic deletion will no longer happen. InfiniteNexus (talk) 15:33, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Promising Draft

[edit]

Thank you. I thought that was how the Draft process worked, but you gave me assurance. I was thinking it was getting close to the "6 months". And I appreciate the sentiment of suggesting that the article is promising, as well as some relief.

It has been an unusual experience. I found a number of witnesses to the community, but they are of advance age, if they haven't passed already, so there is always the tension of knowing none of what they can tell me is RS.

I hope to score a 1960's aerial photo in the next few months.

IveGoneAway (talk) 22:38, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Of course. I mark things as promising if I want them to be preserved in case of being abandoned. It's good stuff. JSwift49 22:40, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Informed Sources band

[edit]

They don't belong in the Informed Sources disambiguation page right now because they aren't mentioned in any article. But I see that there is a paper about them used as a reference in Philadelphia punk scene. If you think they deserve a mention in that article, then write something about them there, using that source (or others). You could then reasonably add "Informed Sources, 1980s band in the Philadelphia punk scene" to the disambiguation page. PamD 15:15, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much! JSwift49 16:45, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JSwift49, I left a comment for you on the draft but the message didn't automatically post here due to an edit conflict. I actually suggest that you post notes on drafts you submit pointing to sources that show notability (three is often recommended) especially if there are several sources to help reviewers. S0091 (talk) 16:54, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Will do from now on, thank you. JSwift49 16:56, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You can actually do it at the top of the draft, where the AfC comments are posted. I fear if you do it on the draft's talk page reviewers will not know to look unless one specifically asked you do so (like I just did). A simple "sources 1, 2 and 3 show it meets XXX notability guideline" or something like that will do. I think it will also help to give you better feedback if declined because ideally a reviewer will state why those sources do not establish notability. As it stands now it appears you have many more declines than accepts which indicates you have not yet got a handle on notability. At the end of the day, reviewers are trying to assess if an article/draft would be kept if nominated for WP:AFD so you might want to start looking at AfD discussions (even better participating) and you might find WP:OUTCOMES helpful. S0091 (talk) 17:26, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I honestly would agree with you declining it, even though he is notable on YouTube he doesn't seem to have much independent focused coverage. The drafts I submitted yesterday are mostly ones that haven't been considered in a while (and that I sometimes make minor fixes to). JSwift49 17:35, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If the sources do not support notability then please do not resubmit them because all that does is waste everyone's time, including yours and volunteer's time is Wikipedia's most precious asset. Also be aware editors do keep topics in draft space for years that are not ready as they wait for sources to support notability or they have time to do the necessary research. I know of at least a couple editors who have hundreds of drafts they monitor. What you can do perhaps instead is if you think the topic is WP:TOOSOON (might be notable one day but not yet) or believe the topic is notable but you do not have the knowledge/time/access to sources to sufficiently improve them is tag them with the {{Promising draft}} template which prevents them from G13 deletion for at least a year and adds them to Category:Promising draft articles. Please know I give you this advice as a fellow editor who appreciates what you are trying to do so do not be discouraged but be more focused on the "bang for the buck" so to speak and aligns with your interests. I hope this makes sense. S0091 (talk) 18:12, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok! I will do promising drafts. I just didn’t want these articles to get auto deleted. JSwift49 18:17, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
G13 goes by the last edit by a human so even a dummy edit (like a adding space) extends it out six months from that edit. If you improve it to meet notability or are otherwise sure it does (bad decline or never submitted for review, etc.) don't hesitate to move to it to mainspace. If you think it is borderline (maybe notable?...eh, need another eye), feel free to submit it for review but do state which sources you think support notability. I have use all these mechanisms. If you are ever unsure what to do, you are welcome to ask at the Teahouse or at my talk page. S0091 (talk) 18:45, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! So you’re saying if it’s obviously notable and I thoroughly review it I can directly publish to main without submitting for AFC? JSwift49 18:49, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sure! It will still be reviewed by an WP:NPP reviewer and if they think it does not meet notability (or has some other major issue) mostly likely they will move it back to draft so the issue(s) can be resolved. If resolved, it can be moved back to mainspace without AfC review or if unsure it is resolved submitted to AfC review. The worst action NPP can take is nominating it for WP:AFD so the community can come to consensus where you will be able to make your case as to how it meets notability, be silent in the matter and let others decide, propose an alternative to deletion or agree that in hindsight it does not meet notability. I mean, you don't want many articles to be fall into these categories, just like you don't many to be AfC declined as that can lead to sanctions. S0091 (talk) 19:16, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great- I will focus on that then. It seems a more effective use of my time to fix up articles and directly submit them vs. creating more of a backlog in AfC. JSwift49 19:18, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

User:JSwift49 - I have accepted the draft for the species, but it appears to be the same as the article that you created last year on the genus. Since the genus is monotypic, my thinking at this point is to redirect the genus to the species, so that if any new species are identified, a genus stub can be written to identify both species. Plethora of promising drafts

[edit]

Hi again, I noticed you worked on/moved quite a few of @FloridaArmy's drafts I had marked as promising a while back (thanks!!) but there are many, many more unmarked. You can find them here (over 1,400). In addition, there is a list of potential articles at User:FloridaArmy/Missing Pieces (some might already be drafts, some not). FloridaArmy is one of Wikipedia's most prolific article creators but they are currently under a restriction so they have go through AfC and are limited to how many they can submit. However, generally, most often the topics are notable, it sometimes just takes some digging for sources and I know FA appreciates any help help they can get. Also, don't forget you have access to the WP:Wikipedia Library. S0091 (talk) 17:44, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, appreciate it. I was more looking to fix up and streamline the promising drafts section, so I think I'll continue with that for now! But will keep this in mind for later. JSwift49 18:37, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
