New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

[edit]

Hello JSFarman,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • If you're interested in instant messaging and chat rooms, please join us on the New Page Patrol Discord, where you can ask for help and live chat with other patrollers.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.
  • To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

[edit]

Hello JSFarman,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • There is live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.
  • To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

[edit]

Hello JSFarman,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Hi JSFarman,

thank you for your feedback on the artcile https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:A%C3%AFssa_Aggoune

After working with a senior editor in the help desk/ live help we did more research with the senior editor and we found the sources which fits the notability requirement. We also removed the broken links and added more links showing coverage of the cases aggoune has been involved in and journalists confirming who he is and what he does and more links as below:

Please note that the blog article is from City Hall watch, a very well known government Watchdog in Vancouver and the senior editor confirmed this would be acceptable because that writer is established and reliably considered an expert. The other sources are from very established news outlets, including the Globe and mail, the Vancouver Sun, CBC, Radio Canada, CTNews, Global TV etc...

thank you again for helping with this article! Aïssa 93 390 (talk) 19:28, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JSFarman,
Can you please help me with this ?
thank you very much! Aïssa 93 390 (talk) 23:36, 7 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Aïssa 93 390. Sorry for the delayed response; I meant to take a look when you left your last message. I have been very distracted. I think he will meet notability (although I disagree on City Hall Watch). I'll leave it for another reviewer to assess. JSFarman (talk) 08:45, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi JSFarman,
i just made the required changes and i agree with you that now he will meet notability. Could you please review my changes ?
thank you so much for your help with this ! Aïssa 93 390 (talk) 20:18, 20 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi JSFarman,
I made the required changes and i also run this individual on Chat GPT, DeepSeek and Grok and they all confirmed notability and that this individual qualifies for a Wikipedia article. I think the only thing left is that it must be written in a way a senior editor would write it and i have tried to do so to the best of my ability. Would you please have a quick read of the changes and let me know if it can be validated? In your last message you agreed that the individual would meet notability so it is just a matter of the formatting at this point. Please help me, i am trying my best here to learn how to contribute to the online encyclopedia. thank you JSFarman! Aïssa 93 390 (talk) 18:57, 8 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Aïssa 93 390. Using LLM is not a great solution. The references are often misinterpreted, and mistakes are frequently made. The issue I see with the article at this point is related to structure. Give this a read. You need to start with a declarative statement about why they are notable -- why are they in Wikipedia? -- based on what has been reported, and build the article from there. I have the article on my watch list and will keep an eye out for your changes and will work on it when I have some time. Thanks for persevering. JSFarman (talk) 01:52, 9 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @JSFarman Thank you for your response, i appreciate your help with this. I really want to get this right and understand how to become a good editor. I have read the link you shared with me and it contains a ton of great information, thank you for that!
Where i am struggling to understand is :
How do i express the exceptional work this individual has done ( for exemple: a regular joe winning against a multi billionaire corporation and also, a "non-lawyer" regular man winning against numerous high level lawyers in court etc...) but how do i express this while avoiding promoting the subject? i think this is where i am really struggling because i am trying not to promote the subject while explaining his accomplishment for the community and for all renters in Vancouver and across Canada. It is well documented in the news articles i provided as reference (Vancouver Sun, Globe and mail, CBC Radio Canada etc...) Thank you again for your help JSFarman ! Aïssa 93 390 (talk) 17:34, 9 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @JSFarman
I hope you are well and healthy!
I have some time off work now to rectify what needs to be modified and to learn how to be a better editor.
Would you please help me get this done properly please?
Thank you so much!
Steve Aïssa 93 390 (talk) 17:17, 22 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Steve. I just went through your references again, and did some additional searching, and while all of the good he has done has been documented, I have been unable to find coverage that provides the extensive specific coverage required to meet Wikipedia's inclusion criteria. Interviews are not considered independent, although if an interview is accompanied by substantial editorial specifically about Aggoune it will go towards meeting the general notability criteria.
I wish I could be more helpful. I expect that he will continue to generate press coverage as his career unfolds. In the interim perhaps you could work on the structure of the article; give this a read! You can also learn more (while improving Wikipedia) via the task center. Happy holidays (and happy to help with the article in the future). JSFarman (talk) 20:09, 23 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @JSFarman
Thank you for your message and Merry Christmas to you and your family!
I am confused about your latest message because you had told me in July that he would meet notability, i had also spoken with a senior editor in the help desk/ live help who did more research and the senior editor had confirmed he would meet notability - the issue was mostly about the way to write the article which is what i need help with - would you please help with this ? it would make a wonderful christmas gift and help me understand how can i be better, i have been trying for half a year now!
Thank you again @JSFarman! Aïssa 93 390 (talk) 19:01, 25 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Cite Unseen September 2025 updates

[edit]

Hello! Thank you for using Cite Unseen. We are excited to share details about a big update we just deployed. With grant support from Wikimedia CH, we've added several new features, including a citation filtering dashboard, settings dialog, support for localization, and the ability to easily suggest domain categorizations. Cite Unseen now also lives on Meta Wiki, as part of our effort to serve all Wikimedia projects. Our source lists are now also on Meta-Wiki, where they can be collaboratively edited by the community.

Please see our newsletter on Meta-Wiki for full details. If you have feature ideas, notice any issues with our new updates, or have any questions, please get in touch via our project talk page. Thank you!

From SuperHamster and SuperGrey, 05:43, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This message was sent via global message delivery. You received this message as you've been identified as a user of Cite Unseen. If you are not a Cite Unseen user, or otherwise don't want to receive updates in the future, you can remove yourself from our mailing list here.

SuperHamster and User:SuperGrey! I love it! It is really helpful for patrolling/reviewing.
Is it possible to somehow note that a reference is used to support content created via LLM? I keep running into hallucinations (which may be intentional). I also forget to check for AI, but that is another issue altogether. Thank you! Julie JSFarman (talk) 17:06, 16 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the kind words! To clarify, is the request to tag websites that are basically publishing AI-generated content with little to no oversight (i.e. AI slop)? I'm thinkig of, for example, the websites that NewsGuard identified as AI-generated news. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 18:35, 16 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly. JSFarman (talk) 19:12, 16 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Noted! Great idea. I'll see what we can do here (hopefully we can lean on some existing lists of these sort of sites). ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 04:50, 18 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
SuperHamster! I just found the "suggest categories" tool!!! I am inordinately excited. Thank you! JSFarman (talk) 04:31, 19 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yay! Suggestions are very welcome :) ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 01:29, 22 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Correction request to Elizabeth Matthews page

Hi JSFarman, First I want to disclose that I work with ASCAP. I'm messaging to request a simple correction to ASCAP CEO Elizabeth Matthews' page. The page states that she has been CEO since 2018. In fact, she has been ASCAP CEO since 2015, which is verified by the sources that are footnoted in the copy! Would you be able to make this edit on the page? Thank you! Hello! Voting in the 2025 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 1 December 2025. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2025 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:35, 18 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Inappropriate edits to Sarah Hurwitz page

[edit]

Certainly some of the new comments on the Sarah Hurwitz page were inappropriate, but most of them were well-sourced journalism. IMO, you should revert your edits, or at least find a way to edit without deleting everything. Is there a standard way to push this dispute to a broader audience? Also see the talk page on Sarah Hurwitz, as I think you skipped over basic due process. Rybu (talk) 21:50, 22 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I disagree that the references used were acceptable. This has not been covered by media outlets that the community considers reliable. The editor used self-published sources: two tweets from InfoLib News, and a YouTube clip via Ahmed Shihab-Eldin (that does not interpet her comments as the editor did). The only source that is not self-published is a similarly misinterpreted ref from the arguably reliable Middle East Eye. There was significant WP:SYNTHESIS and the POV was not neutral, as evidenced by the IP editor's antisemitic comments. I encourage you to read Hurwitz' verbatim quote in its entirely.
That said, you can get more eyes on the issue via a request for comment. Thanks for your message. Sincerely! I appreciate it. JSFarman (talk) 23:00, 22 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Antisemitism is anything you don't like. Her comments were ridiculously racist and Jewish supremacist but you took it upon yourself to hide them ~2025-35606-05 (talk) 13:43, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, it appears I didn't have to do anything more. Rybu (talk) 19:15, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No. An editor requested that the controversy be included in the article, suggested the language, and used valid references. I added it to the article verbatim. JSFarman (talk) 20:08, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Articles for Creation backlog drive

[edit]

Hello JSFarman:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive in December!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than half a month of outstanding reviews from the current 2+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 December 2025 through 31 December 2025.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 3000 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 06:07, 23 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Opinion on the draft

[edit]

Hey! I was wondering if you could take a look at this draft and help assess whether it meets the general notability criteria, when you get a minute. I’ve been discussing it with an editor who is interested in law-related topics on their talk page here. User talk:Niafied#Comment on the draft.

I usually work on drafts about women in the industry, but this subject stood out. I attended an event at the Google Ventures office where he was a speaker, and I was surprised to find no existing Wikipedia page when I tried to learn more about the speaker. He is also a headline speaker for major Fortune magazine conferences, so the coverage is clearly not routine. I’ve been evaluating what company-related background is appropriate to include in the founder’s biography. The company is being described by mainstream outlets as one of the hottest AI startups in the world and has secured some of the largest funding rounds this year.

Thanks in advance! WestwoodHights573 (talk) 05:09, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The writing is great and the tone is perfect, but I think only Financial Times and Fortune are ironclad. Anything bylined "contributor" in Forbes is not considered reliable, interviews are not considered independent, and Insider publications are not generally considered reliable. The Information could be fine but I can't get past the paywall. Content related to funding is usually run-of-the-mill; it is almost always based on press releases, and every company that raises money issues press releases. Double whammy, because the underlying source is not independent.
Cite Unseen analyzes the references (without weighing specificity of the coverage or its independence as follows. (If you are unfamiliar with Cite Unseen, info is here. It's a great tool.)
Total 19 citations
2 generally reliable
1 no consensus
5 marginally reliable
2 generally unreliable
2 news
9 unknown links
Perennial sources is a great resource for consensus related to sources.
I would trim the content related to the company. The more about Harvey, the less valid the argument that Weinberg is independently notable becomes.
This is all just my opinion! Of course. Nonetheless, I hope it is helpful. JSFarman (talk) 18:43, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @JSFarman! Thank you so much for your feedback! I did not know there is such a useful tool for citations. I tried to activate it now, but I am a bit confused with instructions. I will try to figure out how to activate it for my account. I used your suggested Perennial sources list.
I removed the Forbes article, but kept the 30 under 30 page, because he was on the editorial list.
The Observer pieces should be considered reliable, as per the note here, WP:THEGUARDIAN, it is part of the Guardian.
As to the WP:TECHCRUNCH, I think those are rs, because they were written by the editor in chief of Tech Crunch, and not a contributor.
Source 12 is WP:BLOOMBERG, written by the senior reporter. There is also WP:NBC, source 13. It is the conversation with the founder as video, followed by an article.
I kept one paragraph about Harvey’s funding because it is directly relevant. His career is centered on the company, and after reviewing other founder pages, including Zuckerberg’s, where there is a substantial section on Facebook, I used that structure as a guiding example. I consolidated the list to 16 sources, and none of them are press releases related to the funding. I would prefer not to remove the remaining sources, as they come from mainstream media and all provide material information about the subject.
Do you think I can move the draft into main space at this stage? I am thinking to copy the source assessment and leave it on the talk page for reference. WestwoodHights573 (talk) 19:21, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Mark Zuckerberg's article should not be your guiding example! Use a less exalted CEO like Tony Xu. Re: the funding, it's not that the cite is a press release, it's that it's based on a press release. (Check the content of the ref you are using against the press release that was issued but it's your call.) Bloomberg is fine if it provides extensive coverage specifically about the subject of the article. Re the other sources referred to above, you are better than I am with policy. If you think the draft should be in the main space, put it in the main space. No need to address his notability on the talk page. (Add it to the AfD if the article is nominated for deletion or the talk page if it is tagged for notability.) JSFarman (talk) 20:28, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for sharing! Doordash founder is a perfect example. There has actually been a fake Doordash founder with a Wikipedia page, with a fake Harvard MBA, whose page I took to the AfD just a few weeks ago. It was crazy! WestwoodHights573 (talk) 20:39, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That is hilarious! Amazing coincidence. JSFarman (talk) 21:55, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

New pages patrol January–February 2026 Backlog drive

[edit]
January–February 2026 Backlog Drive | New pages patrol

New Pages Patrol is hosting a one-time, two-month experimental backlog drive aimed at reducing the backlog. This will be a combo drive: both articles and redirects will earn points.

  • The drive will run from 1 January to 28 February 2026.
  • The drive is divided into two phases. Participants may take part in either phase or across both phases, depending on availability.
  • Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled during the drive.
  • Two-month drive-exclusive barnstars will be awarded to eligible participants.
  • Each article review earns 1 point, while each redirect review earns 0.2 points.
  • Streak awards will be granted based on consistently meeting weekly point thresholds.
  • Barnstars will also be awarded for re-reviewing articles previously reviewed by other patrollers during the drive.
  • Interested in participating? Sign up here.

Lord Blakie

[edit]

Hi, unfortunately I can’t use ProQuest and I don’t have access to a library (although I doubt the ones near me will have information on a person from Trinidad), I also did try to use JSTOR but when I was using it, it kept crashing so I decided I would try another time. Mwen Sé Kéyòl Translator-a (talk) 09:34, 28 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Also he wasn’t really a pioneer of a certain style, his music was similar to Kitchener’s, Lord Melody and other calypsonians (who do have their own articles), however his music did usually include his iconic laugh, or the use of steel pan drums. Hi Mwen Sé Kéyòl Translator-a (talk). I'll look for sources when I have a chance, but it seems like (based on the descriptions in books) he was at the very least influential? Still! I know nothing about calypso.
Re: libraries, many have digital systems that return analog results. (When you have 500 edits you can access the Wikipedia Library. I'll keep my eye on the article and add sources when I can. Thanks for introducing me Lord Blakie. JSFarman (talk) 17:43, 28 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Your welcome, I tried the library but I think one of the criteria is too low for me to use. He was influential during the 60s Calypso scene, and I am a fan of his music, I’d say he was the fourth-fifth most popular Calypsonian (but I’m not entirely sure how the ratings were back in the day, I wasn’t alive). Thanks for the help Mwen Sé Kéyòl Translator-a (talk) 18:51, 28 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
