Can you please adjust your message template so that it does not contain a closing /small tag on a new line, as shown in this edit? The message above caused a syntax error on every page that it was delivered to. The MassMessage page should have told you that you had a Linter syntax error in your message, and that you should fix it before you send it. Feel free to contact me if you get that error message and do not know how to fix it. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:27, 29 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Jonesey95. Hey, sorry about that. I'd be happy to fix the error if I could sort out what to do. Here is the original invitation. But I don't see what should be deleted. Would you please do it? Thanks. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:37, 29 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Like this (it was done for you). I have put in a request to have a kind editor fix all of the messages that have been delivered. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:49, 30 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
In the future, please try to ensure that all <big>...</big> and <small>...</small> tags start and end on the same line, with no manual line breaks. These two tags, if I can get technical for a moment, are called "inline" tags, which means they can't be used to wrap multiple lines of text. We have bots and scripts cleaning up old WIR newsletters, which have many instances of <big>...</big> tags wrapping multiple lines. These issues were only brought to light a few years ago, and we are working through a backlog of millions of errors, of which the ones in the WIR newsletters are a tiny drop. I am available to provide help if you need it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 11:22, 30 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense Jonesey95. Sorry for the inconvenience to you and the editors who are fixing Women in Red's Oct 2025 and previous months' newsletters. I've notified the others who send out MassMessages here, plus added instructions here. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:13, 30 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

October music

[edit]
story · music · places

My story today is about a woman and her husband who played Bach's Sonatina for us (Rheingau Musik Festival, long ago) on an upright piano, and it made me cry, and I still remember. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:53, 1 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Carl Nielsen (FA by four colleagues, not me) is remembered on the main page! My story on the Germany National holiday is a song calling to trust the new ways, written shortly before the events leading to reunification. I saw a lovely Mozart opera production yesterday, in case of interest. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:19, 3 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

A completely different opera today, - there are youtubes of all three acts of the 100-year-old opera with a young Abbado. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:22, 4 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Just read Claudio's biography; glad to learn about him. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:36, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Hope you read about the singer as well ;) - A good story for a Sunday: Martin Neary conducting Purcell. I also uploaded File:Cat coming, Ehrenbach.jpg, - take your pick ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:33, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
A good story for Monday, about a mezzo as a thinking person, DYK? - see also video. (The nomination wasn't by me, which probably helped.) I didn't see her, but the Carmen production at the Bastille Opéra that she was in last. - I took a pic of the cat in prettier surroundings a few days later, but think the gutter has its own charm ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:40, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Gutter: I highly agree! Wonderful framing with the paint directly behind. Cat: tomorrow. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:59, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I'm advertising: Happy birthday, Margaret Medlyn! (I found the article - not by me - when searching for someone whose birthday is today.) - I took a cat pic, as you know best --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:05, 7 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Happy 50th birthday, Alain Altinoglu!) - I let the video begin with a closeup of the octobass ;) Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:07, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am proud to have brought two performing women to the main page. Sadly, death kept both from performing more, one sooner, the other much later. If you have little time just listen to the one who died young and see if it touches you (in today's story, - I don't want to sprinkle youtube links outside my user pages). Latest pics from a day to the opera in Frankfurt, and afterwards (because train service is only once an hour) a lovely stroll along the Main river with illumination and the moon reflected. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:37, 12 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
quince
Some gorgeous photos (e.g., Dreikönigskirche Frankfurt at night across Main, moon also reflected). The quince one flooded me with memories of my favorite rakia, the one made from this fruit. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:56, 13 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am sad that I had to bring two more people there. At least the video in my story is cute, made for children. - And I uploaded the other cat, - I mean the same in prettier surroundings, almost too pretty. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:01, 14 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
wow, are you fast! - thank you for another cat presentation! - marked to be sung "Happily" --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:29, 15 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My latest: Roberta Alexander, - listen. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:23, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Can't believe that Toshio Hosokawa is 70 already. - Gorgeous cat! Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:09, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for my silence. I don't have it in me to chat yet. If you're unaware, moments after the COT, including me walked off the stage at WCNA, a gunman walked onto it threatening suicide. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:40, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for my ignorance. Yes, I knew, but forgot that you were there. - Today Sequenza III on Luciano Berio's centenary. Once you feel like it you can listen with the score or to the first performer, Cathy Berberian (link in the work's article), - I couldn't decide ;) - Thank you for the pensive cat! I loved it so much that I looked up who took pic: you. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:14, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I cropped it (as I do all my cats-of-the-day, but someone else took the photo. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:27, 25 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I missed that ;) - Elsa Reger on her birthday --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:17, 25 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
299 years ago, a Bach cantata was first performed --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:10, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Am catching up. Very interested in Toshio Hosokawa, and I istened to his "Voiceless Voice in Hiroshima" --Rosiestep (talk) 12:37, 28 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for listening. Benita Valente was my story today, and I added a pic from La Scala to my talk. Gilda was one of Valente's (rather few) roles, - nice match. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:18, 29 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
300 years ago: another one, Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild, BWV 79, on the occasion for which it was written, Reformation Day - it's not only Halloween today. You are invited to the peer reviews for another candidate. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:15, 31 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from SupermarketCake (00:02, 6 October 2025)

[edit]

Hi Rosie -

After making some minor edits on the Thursday Murder Club (series) page, I realized that there wasn't an article for the latest book in the series. I started writing it in my sandbox and wanted your advice on whether it's ready to be published. And should I have first asked if the article could/should be written? (It seemed like a logical new article, but not sure if there is a protocol for new books...?)

Thanks in advance! --SupermarketCake (talk) 00:02, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, SupermarketCake. It's nice to hear from you. I've reviewed the page you've been editing, Thursday Murder Club (series) and the draft article in your sandbox. In my opinion, the draft article meets the Notability (books) requirements, so I think it's fine to continue making progress on it, and when you feel it's ready, move it to mainspace (or I can help you with that, if you wish). As to whether you should ask first if the article could/should be written: no need, as long as you have read/understand the applicable notability policy on the subject (check out the blue box in the WP:N page for a list of notability topic guidelines, which includes the one for books). That said, no harm in asking if you wish. The best place to ask the question would be the WikiProject associated with the topic -- in this case, WikiProject Books. Note, there are >2,000 WikiProjects on EN-WP, and they are an excellent way to develop relationships with other editors who work on topics that you want to write about (some are more active than others).
P.S. When writing on someone's talkpage, it's helpful to wikilink what you're referencing (like I've done in my reply to you). --Rosiestep (talk) 14:44, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much!
And I will definitely wikilink in my next message. I wrote this note from a link on my page to message my mentor—instead of directly on your talk page—and didn't see an icon to do that. I might have missed it, but is there also be a shorthand way to do it via the keyboard?
Thanks again. SupermarketCake (talk) 15:15, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi SupermarketCake. Yup, there is "shorthand". Using the keyboard, type two square brackets ([[]]) around the thing you are referencing. Info/Instructions here: Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:22, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Aha! Thanks! 🙏🏼 SupermarketCake (talk) 15:25, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi. What should I do? --Setter44 (talk) 10:19, 7 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Setter44 and welcome to Wikipedia. The short answer to your question is: edit Wikipedia! I see that you have started doing so, by adding wikilinks (which is very helpful!). I just left a welcome message on your talkpage with further information for newcomers. It expands on my answer as to what you can do. Happy editing! --Rosiestep (talk) 14:49, 7 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Arbitration

  • After a motion, arbitration enforcement page protections no longer need to be logged in the AELOG. A bot now automatically posts protections at WP:AELOG/P. To facilitate this bot, protection summaries must include a link to the relevant CT page (e.g. [[WP:CT/BLP]]), and you will receive talk page reminders if you forget to specify the contentious topic but otherwise indicate it is an AE action.

Question from Jmurray1285 (21:08, 8 October 2025)

[edit]

Hi Rosiestep, I've actually got two questions. First, is it alright to cut and paste content from one WP article into another or is that plagiarism? Second, assuming that is allowed, is it considered best practice or is it better to not have similar content in more than one article? --Jmurray1285 (talk) 21:08, 8 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jmurray1285. Great questions.
  1. It's okay to copy sentences/paragraphs from one EN-WP article into another; here's info and instructions, plus how to assure attribution. For example, I do this with biographies when John's biography has info about his siblings and I want to add the same info into his sister's biography. Remember to include the reference.
  2. It's okay to cut and paste content, known as splitting, from one EN-WP article into an existing EN-WP article, or to form a new article; here's the info/instructions, plus how to assure attribution. For example, I split out Pre-independence schools in Kenya from Education in Kenya. Remember to include the references.
  3. It's also okay to translate sentences/paragraphs/whole article from one language Wikipedia into EN-WP; here's info/instructions, plus how to assure attribution. Remember to double-check the references and include them.
If you follow the instructions in each of these situations, then it isn't plagiarism. As for is it a best practice? Yes; it's absolutely okay. If you want help (or another set of eyes) the first time you're ready to implement one of these, okay to ping me. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:52, 8 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Mr Pibble (01:14, 10 October 2025)

[edit]

How can I receive medals on Wikipedia --Mr Pibble (talk) 01:15, 10 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mr Pibble and welcome to Wikipedia. Barnstars (that's the Wikipedia word for "medals") are handed out by volunteer editors, people like you and me, for any number of reasons, mostly based on editing. Check out the different types of barnstars here, which describe various things editors might do, which might lead to receiving a barnstar. Some other award types are listed here and some "personal user awards" are listed here. Perhaps this will inspire you to want to give someone a barnstar or award, as anyone can do so! --Rosiestep (talk) 12:01, 10 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Can I apply for wikepedia medals? --Mr Pibble (talk) 04:12, 13 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mr Pibble. As I mentioned before, there are no Wikipedia "medals", per se, but there are Wikipedia "barnstars". I'm unaware of a process to apply for a barnstar. That said, there's this thing called, The Wikipedia Adventure, which does give out some fun stuff as you play along, if I remember correctly. Maybe try your that? --Rosiestep (talk) 14:35, 13 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from TechInfoGuide (18:07, 10 October 2025)

[edit]

Hi, I want to create a Wikipedia page for Your Number Guaranteed Inc., but right now I only have sources from the company’s website and social media. Would I be eligible to create the page, or should I wait until there are independent sources? Thanks. --TechInfoGuide (talk) 18:07, 10 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) If you are professionally or personally related to this company, I highly recommend that you do NOT create a page about them, by WP:COI. You are required to declare your relationship to that company if you decide to create the page. If there are no independent, reliable sources, that usually means that the subject does not meet the WP:GNG guidelines, and do not qualify for an article. monkeysmashingkeyboards (talk) 18:15, 10 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from SyedaQandeel (16:24, 13 October 2025)

[edit]

Hello, I'm working on updating the Enrique Iglesias article with information about his children's names (Lucy Iglesias, Nicolas Iglesias, and Mary Iglesias), and I have citations from reliable sources to support these additions. However, my edits were reverted twice with concerns about lacking proper citations, even though I did include sources. Could you please advise me on the best way to format and present such edits to avoid reversions? Specifically:

Should I use inline citations with {{cite}} templates for this type of personal information? What would be considered the most reliable source types for verifying children's names of public figures? Is there a specific edit summary format I should use when adding BLP information to help editors understand that reliable sources were consulted? Would it help to discuss this change on the article's talk page first before making the edit?

I want to ensure my contributions meet Wikipedia's standards while providing accurate, verifiable information. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! --SyedaQandeel (talk) 16:24, 13 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SyedaQandeel and welcome to Wikipedia. As EI's children are not notable, please follow this guidance, which was previously provided to you here. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:49, 13 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

What is recommended when choosing topics to edit? --Esther Kiragu (talk) 06:39, 15 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Esther Kiragu and welcome to Wikipedia. I don't know that there is a recommendation for topics to edit; it's your choice. Many topics, for example, those within the scope of WikiProject Medicine and WikiProject Books have their own guidelines related to editing articles within the topic area. So you might check out the ones that are within your interest area; lists of WikiProjects here: Category:WikiProjects.
There are a lot of articles in this category, Category:Articles needing attention, which would benefit from gnome-ish types of edits.
Also, I left a welcome message on your talkpage with some links for newcomers. --Rosiestep (talk) 11:47, 15 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Warrior23456 (11:09, 17 October 2025)

[edit]

What can I do in this situation ?Answer if you are free enough. Edit warring edit It is important to note that outside of the limited administrative context, a "stable version" or "status quo version" is an informal concept that carries no weight whatsoever, and it should never be invoked as an argument in a content dispute. Maintaining a stable version is, by itself, not a valid reason to revert or dispute edits, and should never be used as a justification to engage in edit warring. Stable versions are not superior or preferred to disputed edits in any way; boldly making changes to articles is encouraged as a matter of policy, and obstructing good faith edits for the sake of preserving "stable" content or page revisions is a form of disruptive editing. Editors involved in content disputes or edit wars should focus on resolving the dispute rather than preserving the stable version of a page, and the decision to temporarily preserve the stable version for the purposes of deescalating a dispute may only be made by an uninvolved administrator. "" "I read this and experienced that an editor is using this tactic and using a disputed stable in which he himself is involved.@EarthDude:.The stable is disputed and he is using his authority to always revert the changes by all users."" Non-ECP editors are not allowed to edit or discuss (except for making non-controversial edit requests) articles related to South Asian social groups, broadly construed, as well as Indian military history, broadly construed, as per WP:CT/SASG and WP:CT/SA respectively. As such, you are neither allowed to edit the article nor are you allowed to discuss anything at the talk page which is not a non-controversial edit request. — EarthDude (wanna talk?) 11:23, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

how do i make my draft live --Alisongeary (talk) 14:32, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alisongeary and welcome to Wikipedia. I've reviewed the page you drafted: Floreon. Here's info on how to shift an article from draft space to mainspace: WP:DRAFTMOVE. In advance of moving a draft article, make sure it's appropriate to do so (so that the move doesn't get reverted). For example, be sure you understand whether that company is a valid subject for a separate Wikipedia article dedicated solely to it (see here), and that major facts, e.g., awards, have an inline citation. I've also left a welcome message on your talkpage with additional information for newcomers. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:36, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

My WikiConference North America experience

[edit]

After multiple flight delays, I finally got home at 2am this morning. I wasn't planning to write about the weekend on my talkpage, but I did a double-take on the photo I just put at the top -my "cat of the day"- and it made me recognize the feelings that are brewing and that I want to share a few words as an acknowledgement of what happened.

The cat in the photo is getting some sun, while lying in a dark place. I think that describes how some/many/most/all of us who were at WCNA on Friday morning are feeling now... enjoying the light while some part of us is still in darkness.

With calmness and remarkable resilience, we made it through an experience no one should have to experience. As the news broke out, a friend wrote to check up on me: "Crazy world. We just want to write an encyclopedia." Dear friend, amen to that. Acknowledging that a lot of you have have written to me in the various channels we share. Thank you for caring and for being so supportive. It truly means a lot to me. I'll take a walk this sunny morning and when I get back home, I'll keep writing. I hope you do, too. -- Rosiestep (talk) 17:24, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia access down 8%

[edit]

As you are interested in AI, Rosie, you might like to take a look at this analysis by Marshall Miller who tells us that "we are seeing declines in human pageviews on Wikipedia over the past few months, amounting to a decrease of roughly 8% as compared to the same months in 2024-" The only consolation is that much if not most of the information retrieved by AI robots has originated in Wikipedia. I don't know if there's very much we can do about this except to widely publicize the advantages of accessing Wikipedia directly.--Ipigott (talk) 14:21, 21 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Ipigott. Coincidentally, I met with Marshall at WikiConference North America and he told me this was coming. Selena Deckelman also addressed the decline during one of the sessions so I got to hear a bit more about the work that the WMF is doing to address it. At the same time, the wiki community/communities should definitely be doing some deep thinking about the issue, too. I hope that one outcome of my ongoing research would be one way (of hopefully many) that could improve on the downward trend. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:06, 21 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
There's an interesting, fairly optimistic leader by Elaine Moore in today's Financial Times. To read the article, search for Financial Times Where does Wikipedia go.--Ipigott (talk) 08:00, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pointing me to it. Happy to see Charles and Mike quoted. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:23, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps we should devote more effort to emphasizing the reliability factor, also on Women in Red. We could do this by adding details to some of our essays and also by drafting suitable tips for upcoming newsletters. In parallel, we could try to describe how AI can be used constructively to improve the quality of our articles, for example by drawing on your own interest in expanding biography leads. What do you think?--Ipigott (talk) 16:37, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ipigott, Yes indeed, WP:Verifiability is a key component of Wikipedia, so whenever we can talk about it (I include it in my presentations), we should. And yes, adding it to our essays (I lack bandwidth), our upcoming newsletters (November? December? January?), and even our WiR talkpage. My research is still underway with expanding biography leads, but once it's done, yes, there, too. Again, thank you for being so forward-thinking on this. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:27, 25 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I've adapted Rule 4 (Cite everything) in our Ten Simple Rules with "As verifiability is increasingly important as AI evolves, there should be no less than three independent reliable sources for each biography, including at least one source for each paragraph." This could also be used as a tip but perhaps the formulation could be improved.--Ipigott (talk) 14:24, 25 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ipigott, I think it's perfect as is. :) --Rosiestep (talk) 14:26, 25 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
In this connection, some good points are made in Wikipedia has a competitor. The development of Grokipedia is probably worth monitoring quite carefully, especially in relation to the validity of the references found by AI rather than by human contributors. In connection with Women in Red, the Musk-based approach to "woke"-related items and presentations probably deserves special attention.--Ipigott (talk) 17:00, 29 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. Thankfully, lots of active Wikimedians around the world and the Wikimedia Foundation, are keeping a close eye. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:12, 29 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Buv16 (14:18, 27 October 2025)

[edit]

How do I do embeds and links and formatting and whatnot??? I have no experience with coding/software whatsoever and this is all incredibly intimidating --Buv16 (talk) 14:18, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Buv16 and welcome to Wikipedia. I just left a welcome message on your talkpage with a small list of helpful links for newcomers. This will help you get started... no coding/software experience required. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:14, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from KatlanmisKulak (12:38, 28 October 2025)

[edit]

Hello How does a contribution in sandbox gets to a published contribution? --KatlanmisKulak (talk) 12:38, 28 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi KatlanmisKulak and welcome to Wikipedia! I took a quick look at the draft article in your sandbox regarding Murat Ses and it's a very good start.
Next step, read this and then make any additional improvements to the draft.
After that: When you think your draft is ready for official review, move it to Articles for Creation. Instructions for moving it are here.
After that: Your draft will be reviewed, and either (a) moved to "mainspace" by the reviewer, or (b) you'll be given feedback regarding what needs further attention. (Be patient with the volunteer reviewers.)
In the meantime, I left a Welcome message on your talkpage with some additional helpful links for newcomers.
Happy editing! --Rosiestep (talk) 13:06, 28 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

hello how do I add things to my profile --Terrorsincethepublicera (talk) 22:38, 29 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Terrorsincethepublicera and welcome to Wikipedia. To add things to your profile, edit this page. (In Wikipedia, we refer to an editor's profile page as their "userpage".) At least till you get familiar with Wikipedia, don't put any self-identifying information (age, gender, where you live) on your userpage.
By the way, I left a welcome message on your talkpage with some additional helpful links for newbies. (More info about "talkpages" here.) --Rosiestep (talk) 11:26, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Wilko1911 (16:24, 30 October 2025)

[edit]

hi , i want to create a new link for a fashion brand --Wilko1911 (talk) 16:24, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wilko1911 and welcome to Wikipedia. Here are instructions how to link within Wikipedia articles. Note, if the linked article exists, doesn't exist, is a disambiguation page, etc., its color will vary; more info about that here.
If the fashion brand article exists already and you want to create a link to its official website, here are instructions on how to do it and here is info regarding where to put it within the article.
By the way, I just placed a Welcome message on your talkpage which has some standard helpful info for newcomers. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:26, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Harry Thomas fashion brand Nottingham Wilko1911 (talk) 19:11, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Wilko1911. I understand now that what you want to do is to create a new article. Ergo:
  1. I have shifted the content your left here on my talkpage into your sandbox: look here. In your sandbox, you can work on the draft until you feel it's ready for review.
  2. But before you do any more work on the draft, read this info about "your first article".
  3. If/When you think your draft is ready for official review, move it to Articles for Creation. Instructions for moving it are here.
  4. The reveiwers (they are all volunteers) will either (a) approve what you created and move the draft to "mainspace", or (b) they'll give you some type of feedback regarding why not.
--Rosiestep (talk) 20:08, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, Wilko1911... As I noticed that your username "Wilko1911" has some similarity to people (Harry Wilkinson & Thomas Wilkinson) named in your draft article, here is information about conflict of interest. If applicable, please abide by the policy. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:17, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Guide to temporary accounts

[edit]

Hello, Rosiestep. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern: ~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options → Tick Enable the user info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

Question from Baliramlone (01:55, 1 November 2025)

[edit]

how to create page abd google scholar --Baliramlone (talk) 01:55, 1 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Baliramlone and welcome to Wikipedia. Info about how to create your first article is here. I left a welcome message on your talkpage with some additional links for newcomers. I know what google scholar is, but I don't know what you mean by "... abd google scholar", so if you clarify that, maybe I'll be able to answer that part of your question. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:06, 1 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Baliramlone - I just noticed that you put some biographical info about yourself on your userpage. If your question had something to do with a desire to create your autobiography, don't, because creating an creating an autobiography is considered a conflict of interest. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:10, 1 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
