Invitation to provide feedback

Inspired by Worm That Turned's re-RfA where he noted administrators don't get a lot of feedback or suggestions for improvement, I have decided to solicit feedback. I'm reaching out to you as you are currently one of the users I've selected as part of my recall process. I hope you will consider taking a few moments to fill out my feedback form. Clicking on the link will load the questions and create a new section on my user talk. Thanks for your consideration. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 15:42, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

Notice

The article Damien Short has been proposed for deletion. The proposed deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This is an automated notification. Please refer to the page's history for further information. DatBot (talk) 00:01, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

You are receiving this message because you are on the update list for Palestine-Israel articles 5. The drafters note that the scope of the case was somewhat unclear, and clarify that the scope is The interaction of named parties in the WP:PIA topic area and examination of the WP:AE process that led to two referrals to WP:ARCA. Because this was unclear, two changes are being made:

First, the Committee will accept submissions for new parties for the next three days, until 23:59, 10 December 2024 (UTC). Anyone who wishes to suggest a party to the case may do so by creating a new section on the evidence talk page, providing a reason with WP:DIFFS as to why the user should be added, and notifying the user. After the three-day period ends, no further submission of parties will be considered except in exceptional circumstances. Because the Committee only hears disputes that have failed to be resolved by the usual means, proposed parties should have been recently taken to AE/AN/ANI, and either not sanctioned, or incompletely sanctioned. If a proposed party has not been taken to AE/AN/ANI, evidence is needed as to why such an attempt would have been ineffective.

Second, the evidence phase has been extended by a week, and will now close at 23:59, 21 December 2024 (UTC). For the Arbitration Committee, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 03:20, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

Your addition to World War II Talk

Hello there

Please note that The World War II Talk page "is not a forum for general discussion of the article's subject." it is not a place to discuss editors' opinions on new books about WWII. If you have a suggestion for a specific addition to the article please provide it with appropriate sources. Aemilius Adolphin (talk) 11:00, 30 December 2024 (UTC)

Aemilius Adolphin Your overzealous attempt to unilaterally police the talk page are in fact likely to be considered edit warring, if reported. If it's controversial or other editors disagree, you should not be removing others' comments on talk pages. I am asking you to self revert. (t · c) buidhe 22:10, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
You are right that I was overzealous in reverting your contribution to the talk page. I apologise for this. However, if you start a Talk topic called "Interesting new book" and then ask people to comment on a summary of this book you shouldn't be surprised if someone thinks you are inviting other editors to enter into a general debate about this book. It would have been better to start a topic called something like: "Estimates of Civilian Deaths" and then propose a change to the info box based on cited page numbers of this book. Also the question you posed is already canvassed in the article so it appeared to me that you hadn't even read the article. Nevertheless I should have answered you question on your Talk page or on the article Talk page as I have now done. Again I apologise for not taking your question seriously. I hope you have a great new year and that I wake up less cranky than I was. Aemilius Adolphin (talk) 22:45, 30 December 2024 (UTC)

I have sent you a note about a page you started

Hi Buidhe. Thank you for your work on Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign. Another editor, Klbrain, has reviewed it as part of new pages patrol and left the following comment:

There are two sources independent of the group, although it would be helpful to show sustained coverage from independent sources.

To reply, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Klbrain}}. (Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.)

A tag has been placed on Exercise capacity requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

WP:NOTDICTIONARY

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, pages that meet certain criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Notice

The article Daniel Uziel has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Source 1 is worldcat, which is made for any author. Source 2 is a blog. Source 3 is self-published. Every other source confirms a book published + is self-published.

Istrian-Dalmatian Exodus

Hello Buidhe. Could you validate that this edit where these sources are reliable and in-fact state that the entire exodus of 350,000 Italians was ethnic cleansing? Not even the article on the topic states this outright. Thanks. OyMosby (talk) 22:15, 17 January 2025 (UTC)

The arbitration case Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Palestine-Israel articles 5 has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

  • All articles whose topic is strictly within the Arab-Israeli conflict topic area shall be extended confirmed protected by default, without requiring prior disruption on the article.
  • AndreJustAndre, BilledMammal, Iskandar323, Levivich, Makeandtoss, Nableezy, Nishidani, and Selfstudier are indefinitely topic banned from the Palestine-Israel conflict, broadly construed. These restrictions may be appealed twelve months after the enactment of this remedy, and every twelve months thereafter.
  • Zero0000 is warned for their behavior in the Palestine-Israel topic area, which falls short of the conduct expected of an administrator.
  • Should the Arbitration Committee receive a complaint at WP:ARCA about AndreJustAndre, within 12 months of the conclusion of this case, AndreJustAndre may be banned from the English Wikipedia by motion.
  • WP:Contentious topics/Arab–Israeli conflict#Word limits (discretionary) and WP:Contentious topics/Arab–Israeli conflict#Word limits (1,000 words) are both modified to add as a new second sentence to each: Citations and quotations (whether from sources, Wikipedia articles, Wikipedia discussions, or elsewhere) do not count toward the word limit.
  • Any AE report is limited to a max of two parties: the party being reported, and the filer. If additional editors are to be reported, separate AE reports must be opened for each. AE admins may waive this rule if the particular issue warrants doing so.
  • The community is encouraged to run a Request for Comment aimed at better addressing or preventing POV forks, after appropriate workshopping.
  • The Committee recognizes that working at AE can be a thankless and demanding task, especially in the busy PIA topic area. We thus extend our appreciation to the many administrators who have volunteered their time to help out at AE.
  • Editors are reminded that outside actors have a vested interest in this topic area, and might engage in behaviors such as doxxing in an attempt to influence content and editors. The digital security resources page contains information that may help.
  • Within this topic area, the balanced editing restriction is added as one of the sanctions that may be imposed by an individual administrator or rough consensus of admins at AE.
Details of the balanced editing restriction
  • In a given 30-day period, a user under this restriction is limited to making no more than one-third of their edits in the Article, Talk, Draft, and Draft talk namespaces to pages that are subject to the extended-confirmed restriction under Arab–Israeli conflict contentious topic procedures.
    • This will be determined by an edit filter that tracks edits to pages in these namespaces that are extended confirmed protected, or are talk pages of such pages, and are tagged with templates to be designated by the arbitration clerks. Admins are encouraged to apply these templates when protecting a page, and the clerks may use scripts or bots to add these templates to pages where the protection has been correctly logged, and may make any necessary changes in the technical implementation of this remedy in the future.
    • Making an edit in excess of this restriction, as determined at the time the edit is made, should be treated as if it were a topic ban violation. Admins should note that a restricted user effectively cannot violate the terms of this and above clauses until at least 30 days after the sanction has been imposed.
  • They are topic banned from the Arab–Israeli conflict, broadly construed, in all namespaces other than these four (except for their own userspace and user talkspace).
  • This sanction is not subject to the normal standards of evidence for disruptive editing; it simply requires a finding that it would be a net positive for the project were the user to lower their activity in the topic area, particularly where an editor has repeatedly engaged in conflict but is not being intentionally or egregiously disruptive.
  • Any admin finding a user in violation of this restriction may, at their discretion, impose other contentious topic sanctions.
  • If a sockpuppet investigations clerk or member of the CheckUser team feels that third-party input is not helpful at an investigation, they are encouraged to use their existing authority to ask users to stop posting to that investigation or to SPI as a whole. In addition to clerks and members of the CheckUser team, patrolling administrators may remove or collapse contributions that impede the efficient resolution of investigations without warning.

No wood for the trees

I think it's hilarious that in the upper echelons of administratordom, no one seems to be able to conceptualize any possible tool that they could use other than TBANs. In terms of sanctions against individuals alone, the diversity that here eludes is ever present at ANI, where all sorts of bespoke and custom bans frequently emerge. Sometimes these are TBANs with carveouts, but also notably, there are a range of bans that I have seen introduced specific to RFCs or certain types of RFCs. Editors who have frequently opened bad AfDs or RMs to the point of disruption have found themselves subject to bans for those specific RFC types, for example. Thus, in cases where evidence might rely heavily on RM content, for instance, you might think ... Iskandar323 (talk) 05:00, 26 January 2025 (UTC)

How would you go about finding sources for conspiracy theories?

like how would you find sources that dont like promote the conspiracy theory? cuz theres hundreds of comments on various sites claiming churchill and the like were all jewish.. but can you really use that as sources?

sorry this is just.. a really wierd thing to try and get a source for because... who really gives them the time of day to make a article talking about the conspiracy... and for them not to be nuts and actually believe it... or can you use them?

sorry i just dont really know how you go about getting sources for something not true HCPM (talk) 07:16, 22 February 2025 (UTC)

HCPM there is a lot of academic research on conspiracy theories. Start with a Google Scholar search of the general topic you want to write about (for example "Jewish conspiracy" will get you a lot of results for the topic you were editing about). Use these sources to expand the article. Be cautious when looking for sources to validate a specific piece of information, because that can lead to cherry picking. Canoooo.4 It's not enough to have several sources if they don't have substantial coverage of the subject, and it does no one any good to start a new article when an existing one has more information on the subject. In general, it's always a good idea to improve existing articles, and only create a new one if it's necessary. (t · c) buidhe 22:12, 22 February 2025 (UTC)

Armenians rebelled in 1915, cont.

Ottoman Armenians, of course, had to be far more circumspect if they sympathized with the Russian cause. This was only true, however, as long as they remained inside the empire. For this reason, thousands of Armenians, mostly Ottoman army deserters, began crossing over to Russian lines in August 1914, aided by Dashnak guerrillas familiar with the border areas. The Erzurum garrison alone hemorrhaged more than 50,000 deserters before Turkey even entered the war, most (but not all) of them Armenians, in part because soldiers had not been issued warm clothing (the first snows that year fell in September, foreshadowing the bitter winter to come) [...] The Turkish Consulate in Kars, for example, reported as early as July 1913 that Russian agents were smuggling weapons to Armenian rebels inside Turkey [...] Not being suicidal, the Erzurum Dashnaks and other Armenian partisans in the region, Adamov promised, “will not likely risk launching the uprising until the Russians are right on their doorstep” [...] A deputation of Ottoman Armenian rebel leaders from Zeytun, in the highlands north of Aleppo, reached Tiflis in mid-February 1915, claiming that they had 15,000 men ready to “pounce on Turkish [army] communications” if they received Russian arms and ammunition. Armenian rebels attacked an Ottoman weapons convoy and an army barracks in Zeytun in early April 1915, killing some five hundred Turkish soldiers before they (along with 20,000 Armenian civilians from Zeytun) were forced to flee into the mountains.

You requested a secondary source. Here it is. Sarımtrak (talk) 06:10, 16 March 2025 (UTC)

If you want an honest answer, the reason the article doesn't reflect this source is because McMeekin's views on the Armenian issue is in contrast to the vast majority of reliable, published sources—see wp:fringe. (t · c) buidhe 06:32, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
How many sources do you need to bypass the fringe barrier? I can cite as many sources as you want. All of them show that the Armenians rebelled. Sarımtrak (talk) 06:44, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
You're not going to find the sources that you're looking for when we have many sources for the prevailing opinion in scholarly sources. But I'd argue that a bigger issue is how you are framing the problem. "The Armenians" are not a cohesive entity that can all "rebel" at once. Did Armenians rebel? Some did, most did not. However, to attribute the actions of some people to others in the same ethnic group is exactly how genocide happens, as we are seeing in Gaza. (t · c) buidhe 06:49, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
Where is your evidence that the prevailing opinion is that Armenian did not rebel? I can cite more sources for the Armenian rebellion than you can cite against it. What is happening in Gaza is not remotely related to the Armenian events. Turkey is not convicted of genocide, but Israel is being prosecuted in the ICJ. Sarımtrak (talk) 07:07, 16 March 2025 (UTC)

Chapeau

Hi @Buidhe - it's surprisingly difficult to write this, because I'm struggling to find the correct words and phrasing. RfA is a somewhat anxiety inducing process, especially at the very beginning when it goes live. Having watched RfAs over the last six or seven years, I'm often surprised how quickly they can "turn". I would just like to personally acknowledge your responses in the RfA, not to say I agree with them, but because ... this is what I am struggling to write properly ... they demonstrated a confidence in and defence of my abilities to be an admin. Of course, everyone's support is important, but when it's an editor whose work one is very familiar with, one who has shown long-standing dedication to this project, one who I hold in very high regard, and one who works with precision in areas that truly require it given the contemporary world, that's why they meant a lot to me. I have no doubt you have a long list of people who stand ready to help you if you need it at some point, please add me to it. With gratitude and in kindness, Goldsztajn (talk) 23:12, 23 March 2025 (UTC)

Eichmann trial article

Hello,

I've taken a look at your contributions to GA articles in the Holocaust topic and I was wondering if you could help make the Eichmann trial article into a GA. I translated most of it from the Hebrew and Norwegian Wikipedias, but sadly due to my work schedule I do not have the time to do the work of turning it into a GA myself, otherwise I would. I'm impressed with the work you've already done on other articles in the topic. Please let me know if you are interested in helping out.

Thanks!

Gommeh (talk/contribs) 19:22, 20 March 2025 (UTC)

I'm a lot less active on wikipedia than I used to be, so no.
One thing the article is really missing is about the political role that the trial served, and the "Consequences and impact" section is missing some negative effects that have been attributed to the trial, imv. In contrast, I would trim some details about how Eichmann was abducted—arguably another article "Adolf Eichmann manhunt" could be spun off. (t · c) buidhe 00:47, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
Understood. I've revamped the article since your last comment. Could you please clarify exactly which negative effects you think should be covered? Gommeh (talk/contribs) 14:12, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
GommehGaming101 sorry my comment was not particularly clear.
The article as it is begins suggests the rationale for the trial as self-evidently flowing from Eichmann's crimes. While no one reasonably doubts his guilt, there were specific reasons why the trial was held and publicized:

The Eichmann trial belonged to another category of prosecutions of political crimes, one in which a government aims at utilizing past crimes to build support and legitimacy for itself and invites the pop-ulation to identify with the victims.2 David Ben-Gurion, the prime minister of Israel, intended to use this trial to remind the world of the Holocaust, to teach the younger generation about the past, and to strengthen Zionist convictions.3 In order to do so, the whole history of Nazi persecution of Jews was to be displayed in court, with special emphasis on ideologically important episodes involving Jewish resis-tance and heroism. Many of these historical episodes had nothing to do with Eichmann.[1]

I realize you have a short section on the didactic purpose of the trial, but it's buried in the "prosecution" section rather than presented at the beginning as one of the main reasons it was held to begin with.
The prosecution section doesn't deal with criticisms of historical accuracy and selection of witnesses that were there for other reasons than to testify about the defendant's guilt[2]
The reactions section I would also rework into a section detailing legacy and effects. What were the effects of the trial on, for example, research and popular understanding of the Holocaust, Jewish society in Israel[3][4] and around the world, relations between Israel and other countries? That's not really covered either. I apologize for my wording in the previous comment, it's not usually helpful to think of effects in terms of positive and negative.
You linked to the Nazis and Nazi Collaborators (Punishment) Law, which I did write and I think it does a better job of covering the historical context rather than getting too lost in the details. There is also so much written about this trial that I don't see the need for citing news reports and the trial itself. Its easier to misrepresent primary sources and if info is not covered in the voluminous scholarly literature it's surely undue. (t · c) buidhe 00:54, 27 March 2025 (UTC)

Spoken version of "Armenian genocide"

I'm considering creating a spoken version of the article "Armenian genocide," which you improved to featured article status 3 years ago now. As it is both a vital and featured article, and also because the 110th memorial day of the genocide is next month, I believe it would be a very good article to record. I'd just like to ask you if you consider the article as it is currently to be fit for a spoken recording, or if you first have to perform some edits or reforms of the article. ―Howard🌽33 06:30, 25 March 2025 (UTC)

Howardcorn33 It's a FA and no edits are planned. (t · c) buidhe 07:03, 25 March 2025 (UTC)

New LGBTQ article proposal

Hi, Buidhe. We have no article on Transgender erasure, which currently redirects to Queer erasure#Trans erasure. Given a lot of recent activity (not only post-election, but that, too) I think it is inevitable that this will be broken out into its own article. Having seen your work, including breaking out some LGBTQ topics into their own article from a previous section somewhere, I trust you way more to do justice to this topic than some activists I can think of on either 'side' of the topic, and if you have the time, I'd much rather you got there first. I don't have the time to take the lead on this, but I can pop in now and then in a support role if you can lead it. Would love it if you could take this on. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 20:24, 9 April 2025 (UTC)

OhanaUnitedTalk page 18:47, 16 April 2025 (UTC)

OhanaUnited Yes I did see the ping but thanks for the reminder. Unfortunately I'm pretty slammed with IRL stuff right now and it will take me some time to remember what I was doing with the article, but I am hoping to get it done at some point. (t · c) buidhe 22:16, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
No problem. We'll keep it on hold. You can continue working on it once things are quiet down on your end and let us know when that happens. Cheers. OhanaUnitedTalk page 19:18, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

Pinged you at the FAC page and commenting here that the After World War II section has been reworked to more accurately reflect regional trends in Christianity's growth/decline. Hope you can review the new wording when you get the chance! ViridianPenguin🐧 (💬) 19:55, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

Sayfo Infobox

Hello, can you show me the talking discussion regarding the Infobox for pages like Sayfo, or for specifically the Sayfo page? I haven’t seen anything and I just think it’s weird that the Armenian genocide, Greek genocide, and Great Famine of Mount Lebanon pages get to have an Infobox but not Sayfo. Etcnoel1 (talk) 22:08, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

Etcnoel1 Please see Talk:Sayfo where they are linked. (t · c) buidhe 22:15, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

Kneecap Article

I think a good compromise would be for the hamas and hezbollah bit to be included in the intro (because it is their biggest controversy) but also include that they denied supporting hamas and hezbollah Denninithan (talk) 04:24, 4 May 2025 (UTC)

Denninithan This discussion should really take place in the talk page, but the verifiable facts here are 1) there is a video that purports to show band members expressing support for Hamas and Hezbollah and 2) the band denies that they have ever supported these groups. I haven't seen any news reports that outright say that the band supports the armed groups which is what you inserted in the lead. (t · c) buidhe 04:31, 4 May 2025 (UTC)
fair point I'll reopen this on the articles talk page Denninithan (talk) 04:39, 4 May 2025 (UTC)
