Correction for cellular respiration pathway equation

    [edit]
    Article(s)
    Cellular respiration
    Request
The red box at the bottom right below the mitochondrion says "6 H2O", which might be confusing especially since the equation is very small and says "½O2 + 2H+ + 2e", when we know that one O2 becomes two H2O. My request is to forego the "½O2" (make it whole), make the "2" protons and electrons into "4" instead (because the electron transport chain already has two "2e"s coming together before this point), and make it so that 6 O2 results into 12 H2O instead of 6. -- CheckNineEight (talk) 05:09, 27 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

What about other multipliers e.g. for ATP, Pyruvic acid and CO2. Do other items e.g. glucose and acetyle need multipliers introduced? cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 12:07, 27 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Good catch! The whole thing is for one glucose, so it's good as is. "Acetic acid" should rather be "Acetate", and it is 2x – same goes for Acetyl CoA. And "Pyruvic acid" should actually be "Pyruvate". So, from one pyruvate to a complete citric acid cycle, that gives off 3 CO2; there's two of them in the diagram, so that equals 6. CheckNineEight (talk) 12:32, 27 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If so, as a layperson, having a number before unfamiliar terms like "Acetyl CoA" might cause me to think that there's a substance named "2 Acetyl CoA", like "2-propanol". As such, I think the current multipliers are clearer. cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 14:05, 27 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. (And, I mean, the original already has "2 pyruvate" in it; and I doubt that confusion can happen, because there's no hyphen between the number and the word.) How about using "(2x)" in parentheses and an X or a multiply symbol, placed either before or after the substance name? That, or it was probably meant to be interpreted as taking from one pyruvate anyway, but then "6 CO2" wouldn't make sense in that case. CheckNineEight (talk) 15:01, 27 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the 2 pyruvate might also mislead (I suppose having 2 arrows pointing to it alleviates it a bit). I don't know of a good solution. "(2x)" would lead to inconsistencies with H2O etc and having it on all might be excessive. Perhaps a question for Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Science? cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 22:53, 27 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think two arrows should do it. CheckNineEight (talk) 23:05, 27 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I mean it's not that complicated. Do we really need to go to the reference desk? It's a straightforward thing to resolve. Just double the arrows between "pyruvic acid", "acetic acid" and citric acid cycle; or better yet, let's just stick to the original plan of just correcting "6 H2O" into "12 H2O" and changing the equation (½O2 + 2H+ + 2e) accordingly. CheckNineEight (talk) 00:06, 30 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The labels must be consistent. We can't change just one part and leave other multipliers which matter.
There's also a mix of processes (glycolysis and citric acid cycle) and substances (glucose, NADH, FADH2 and acidic acid). Wouldn't the latter now require a multiplier of 2? cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 14:02, 31 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the late response here, I got distracted and immediately procrastinated. Like I said before, the whole diagram is for 1 glucose, so it shouldn't get a multiplier. The ATP outputs are accurate (2 each from glycolysis and citric acid cycle). Glycolysis also makes 2 NADH, oxidation of pyruvate into acetate in this case makes 2 (1 ×2) and citric acid cycle in this case makes 6 (3 × 2); in total, that makes 10. FADH2 is not produced anywhere in the cycle because that's actually a cofactor of Complex II (which is implied or vaguely depicted in the electron transport chain); this should actually be ubiquinol, and in this case 2 (1 × 2) is made here. Both NADH and ubiquinol carry 2e each, totalling 24e. O2 input remains the same (24÷4=6), and that converts to 12 H2O (6×2=12).
    TLDR
    • 10 NADH
    • FADH2 2 Ubiquinol
    • 2 pyruvic acid 2 pyruvates
    • acetic acid 2 acetates
    • 12 H2O (from 6 O2 + 24e + 24H+)

    Perhaps I should've done this {{ping}} thing... @Cmglee: I've replied since August 2. Sorry about that. CheckNineEight (talk) 11:16, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@CheckNineEight: to be honest, I think that the ½ is preferable to twos appearing before some terms. I'll leave it to a third party to decide whether they want to make the change. Sorry! cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add {{ping|cmglee}} to your reply) 13:17, 28 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    @Cmglee:

the ½ is preferable to twos appearing before some terms.

... huh? Do you mean the catabolic pathways? 'Cause I'm pretty sure the whole path from pyruvate was already implied to be doubled – if "6 CO2" is anything to go by.
It's still wrong and misleading, anyway, whether or not you leave it as is. You made it seem more complicated than it is, when the original request was simple:

    change equation to "O2 + 4H+ + 4e", and the product should be "12 H2O" (from 6 O2)

The reduction equation was arbitrary, so was the amount of electrons taken from the metabolic pathway; changing the O2/H2O amounts doesn't change whether there's 1 or 2 acetates or whatever. Respiration (reduction) is a separate process anyway. It didn't need to be ½O2 and 6 H2O to begin with.
And how would "2 pyruvate" be misleading/confusing at all? It's not even equivalent to "2-propanol", which has a hyphen. Most people already know what a pyruvate is, they wouldn't confuse "2 pyruvate" as another, different compound. CheckNineEight (talk) 07:56, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I can see that they are separate pathways and so only the right part of the diagram needs changing.
Nevertheless, the "½O2 ..." label is not SVG text: it has been baked into paths, so changing it will involve finding and matching the correct font. It might be best to contact the original uploader who may have the original file with the text string.

    Terrain following radar

    [edit]
    Article(s)
    terrain-following radar
    Request
The basic concept of terrain-following radar is somewhat difficult to grasp when described in text, but rather easy in diagram form. Essentially there are two parts, the terrain itself, and a smooth curved line generated by electronics in the radar. The two are overlayed and subtracted from each other. The result is a new curve that represents the difference between the two curves. The electronics then look for the point where that differences is the greatest, positive or negative, and adjusts the flight path.
There is a not-very-good diagram found here (hope that links works) that shows a sample terrain curve, but that doesn't show the second curve. The only image of that I found was here, which shows the curve, marked "3", if you look for "Zero Command Line" in the page. The curved below that, 1 and 2, shows the original radar signal (not really useful here) and the resulting terrain curve - the radar can't see through hills so valleys show up as nothing. In this particular image, the synthetic video, which represents the terrain, is always below the zero line, meaning this aircraft does not have to do anything. For the illustration, the synthetic line should intersect the zero line at some point, so we can explain that it has to maneuver by that amount to avoid it.
Ideally I'd like two images the same size, one showing the real terrain like in the first link, and the "ski ramp" curve superimposed on it. The second would show the resulting difference signal, and indicate the maximum and minimum points.

Ok, I hope an imgur link is OK:
    https://imgur.com/a/EyKNNnl
There are a couple of problems with this version:
    1) the blue line should be horizontal on the left for a distance, to about the 2 point.
    2) it should rise smoothly to the right of 2, it should not curve back. So basically it's correct up to about the 6.
    3) the green line should remain below the blue one for some distance. lower the part to the left of the 2.
    4) the green line is too regular, it doesn't look like real hills.
    5) the green line has to go above the blue one at some point. if we flatten out the left part and raise it so that the peak at 4 is about 4 on the y-axis that should do the trick

Well one off the top - the green part in my imgur should be BELOW the green line, not above it. That's supposed to represent forested hills.
There is one tricky bit, but I'm not sure if we need to show it. The radar is line of sight, so it can't see the valleys. So in my image, there's a "hill" around X=4. Because of that, the valley at X=6 is invisible. So what the radar really sees is the portions from 2 to 4, and (if they were a bit higher) the bits from 7 to 8, and so forth. Does that make sense? Perhaps we should have a second line showing this? Or maybe it's just too "inside baseball"?
    Some labels for this one:
    1) blue line = zero command line
    2) green line = actual terrain
    3) a dimension arrow from the X-axis (y=0) to the flat part of the blue line = "clearance setting", in this case set to "2"
    4) X-axis is "range", from 0 to 10 km
    5) Y-axis is "altitude" from 0 to 2000 ft.
    Maury Markowitz (talk) 17:39, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    Simplified operation of terrain-following radar:
    1. In a plot of altitude a and range r, the blue triangle denotes the aircraft, the blue curve Z its zero command line for clearance setting c, the green curve T the detected terrain (dotted parts are in radar shadow), and the black curve T−Z their difference. Its maximum (red arrow) being positive determines by how much the aircraft should climb.
    2. If the aircraft flies higher, the maximum being negative determines by how much it should descend.
@Maury Markowitz: I decided to draw two plots to compare the climb and descend cases. I removed arbitrary values for altitude and range, and just used a and r axes. What do you think? cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add {{ping|cmglee}} to your reply) 21:28, 29 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent! I really like the use of dotted lines to indicate the invisible bits. Just some minor things:
In the upper graph, "C" should be "Z" and "s" should be "c'. That's all I can see there.
... which would mean the lower would be labeled "T-Z".
    I think that's it! Maury Markowitz (talk) 14:18, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Cmglee: Ok, will this affect your vectorization of this flag in any way? It seems that whoever designed the flag just got the first silhouette of a stag from a website and copied it to the flag. It does seem to be the design used on physical flags of Uddel in real life, according to this Dutch website that sells flags https://www.vlaggen.com/p/vlag-uddel/. Also seen here https://www.fotw.info/flags/nl-ge-ud.html and here https://uddel.info/nieuws/bestellen-van-de-nieuwe-uddelse-vlag/. Please let me know what you think about this. --109.76.204.174 (talk) 20:34, 8 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Unsure whether this affects the legality of the flag, if the silhouette does not have a free licence. A Dutch village might get away with it, but can we? cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add {{ping|cmglee}} to your reply) 01:16, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We really need to get some clarification from the village of Uddel over who designed the flag and where the design for the silhouette. My theory is that the silhouette is a stock image taken someplace online and that both Echo Deer and Wildacker used the same image. This kind of scenario has happened at least once before. In 2023, there was a contest in Martinique (a Caribbean island that's also a French overseas territory) to design a flag for the island and the original winner was a design that had a hummingbird. The design of the hummingbird was taken from the Shutterstock website (where the designs are copyrighted) and when this was discovered, there was controversy in Martinique because of that. As a result, the flag's designer Anaïs Delwaulle asked for her flag to be withdrawn from consideration from Assembly of Martinique. The Assembly complied with Delwaulle's request and the Assembly instead voted for a preexisting design known as "rouge-vert-noir" used by Martinique independence campaigners. We must find out where the stag silhouette on Uddel's flag comes from, and most importantly, we must find out its license and clarify if it's legal to upload on Wikipedia. Otherwise, the "Hoge Raad van Adel" license is incorrect and not only will this flag be deleted from Wikipedia for copyright violation, Uddel will itself be forced to change the flag as it's a copyright infringement and violates Dutch legislation which states that official flags of Dutch municipalities and provinces are public domain. As you can see, this does have real life consequences. Thanks for reading. --109.76.204.174 (talk) 02:20, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for investigating. Interesting to hear about the Martinique case.
It seems the stag is found in Adobe stock images at https://stock.adobe.com/images/deer-vector-illustration/201022301 . @Cmglee: That's good that you found two stock image sources. Now we need to contact Uddel village, find out who designed the flag and if they took the stag silhouette from one of those websites or not. If it comes from a site such as Openclipart which explicitly allows free use of their images and relinquish all copyrights from them, then it's probably OK! Otherwise, the image will have to be deleted form Wikipedia and Uddel will have to change their flag to avoid breaking the law. --109.76.204.174 (talk) 19:21, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Do you want a reduction of code for this file? ◀Strenatos :3▶ 22:55, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if this is enough, but the file is obviously heavy and has duplicate elements on top of each other, and this is clear when viewing it. Ahmed 04 (talk) 01:02, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Map of the ancient Egyptian expeditions to Sinai

    [edit]

Hello, I need to redraw a diagram of the ancient Egyptian expeditions to Sinai for copper and turquoise from page 84 and connect with dotted lines along the route:

    • 1. One route apparently began in the north-east Delta, possibly from Pi-Ramesses or Tjaru (whence one expedition leader originated), and headed southward to the Gulf of Suez. A variant of this route may have traversed the Wadi Tumilat (East Delta) and turned south along the Isthmus of Suez, which contained a Second Intermediate Period settlement at Tell el-Maskhuta,52 a New Kingdom settlement and Ramesside fort at Tell er-Retabeh,53 a Ramesside fortified shrine at Gebel Abu Hassa (containing inscribed jars, texts, and stelae of Sety I and Ramesses II),54 a stela of Ramesses II erected at Gebel Mourr, and a Ramesside fort at Kom el-Qolzoum (Port Suez).55 The small shrine at Gebel Abu Hassa has yielded a small stela fragment mentioning the goddess Hathor, mistress of the turquoise, attesting to this way-station's role in the passage of expeditions to South Sinai.
    • 2. Abdel-Raziq quite plausibly suggests that another route to South Sinai departe the Memphite region and used eastern desert wells (e.g. Bir Qana) to sustain exp along the route to el-Ein el-Sukhna. This destination lay 10 km south of an anch at Bir Odeib56 beside the Red Sea at the northern end of the Gulf of Suez. El-Ba and Abdel-Raziq recorded eight Middle Kingdom rock-cut inscriptions at el- Sukhna,57 some of which attest to copper and turquoise mining expeditions reach region en route to South Sinai. The preceding three routes appear to originate f contemporary royal residence (Itj-tawy in the Twelfth Dynasty; Pi-Ramesse Ramesside Period) and reached the northern end of the Gulf of Suez.
    • 3. A fourth overland and maritime route to South Sinai very likely began from th residence at Thebes or Memphis, and crossed the Eastern Desert from the envir Beni Suef in Middle Egypt. This route traversed Wadi Araba, passing a shrin Ramesses II at Wadi Sannur and a New Kingdom copper mine and camp near Bir Bikheit and Bir Thimeil.59 The Red Sea terminus of this route probably lay at Mersa Thelemet60 opposite el-Markha Plain, which accessed the turquoise (and copper) mining region.
    • 4. An examination of survey maps and the region along the West Sinai foothills, from Port Suez to el-Markha Plain, reveals a north-south line of fourteen oases, springs, wells, and basins (Table 1; fig. 1).67 Most of these water sources could easily have provided the daily water requirements for overland expeditions in the winter and to a lesser extent in the summer. The first well, Ayun Musa,68 which lies to the south-east of a Ramesside fort at Kom el-Qolzoum (Port Suez), contains archaeological remains, including an ushabti fragment and a late Roman to Coptic Period settlement.69 The second well, Bir Abu Qitifa, is very salty, and could not have supplied drinking water.70 The eighth water source, Wadi Gharandal, contains a small stream and many trees, furnishing an ideal watering place and camp site, and has yielded archaeological remains from the Roman Peri
