Question from Dave.W.Simmons (17:35, 4 June 2024)

Hi Nick, can I publish an article I created? --Dave.W.Simmons (talk) 17:35, 4 June 2024 (UTC)

Hello Dave.W.Simmons, my name's not Nick (you can call me LEvalyn or L) but I might be able to help. If you want to create an article, you can start the process from here. After you read the introductory advice, you'll see a button that says "Click here to start a new article". Let me know if you have any questions or problems, and happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 04:45, 6 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from Garforthminer (09:31, 6 June 2024)

Hi there, I run the website and social media for a football club - Garforth Town AFC. The club logo that is shown on Wiki is slightly inncorect and I want to update it. There is a rose in the emblem, but in the uploaded image it is transparent instead of white. I want to upload the image without this transparent rose. Thank you --Garforthminer (talk) 09:31, 6 June 2024 (UTC)

Hello Gaforthminer, thanks for getting in touch! Step one is to upload the image here, following the instructions for a non-free image with a fair use rationale. Once the file it uploaded, it can be added to the article— I can help with that part if you need. Let me know if you run into any trouble, and happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 18:28, 6 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from DanicaShardae201 (20:59, 3 June 2024)

Hello!

I was reading through info about vocal range and found the category "singers with a 5-octave vocal range". I know one of the artists I listen to belongs in that list but he doesn't have a personal wikipedia page, only a band one. Is there a way for me to update the list to include him without writing an entire page? Thanks --DanicaShardae201 (talk) 20:59, 3 June 2024 (UTC)

Hi DanicaShardae201, and thanks for this interesting question! I think the best way to accomplish this would be to follow the thinking at these guidelines for adding categories to redirects. Basically, we could make a redirect from the singer to the band, and add that redirect to the vocal range category. The outcome would be, people who browse the category will see the singer listed there, but when they click the singer's name it will take them to the band's article, where they can learn more. If anyone ever makes a full article about the singer, it will also naturally be categorized correctly.
You can't make the redirect yourself yet because your account is too new, but I'm happy to do it for you -- just let me know what singer and band you're talking about. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 21:56, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
Thanks! That would be great!
The singer is Tim Foust, with the band Home Free. There are a number of celebrity blurbs which mention his 5-octave vocal range.

Hi DanicaShardae, sorry it took a little bit for me to get around to it -- it looks like someone else beat me to the punch! The category has been added to the redirect, and you can see him listed here. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 05:15, 10 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from Editor 5692 (21:20, 18 June 2024)

Hi, How can I create new articles? --Editor 5692 (talk) 21:20, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

The article creation wizard is here. Making an article is not usually a good way to get started on Wikipedia; I suggest reading the advice here before you start. The most important thing is to make sure you will have sources to cite that meet Wikipedia's standards; if you like, you can share links to your sources with me and I am happy to give my opinion as to whether they are likely to work. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 21:23, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from MahmoudAbbasAlDilfti (10:02, 20 June 2024)

Hi,

Do you know what should i do when there is a "field required" when i tried to enter the title of the article that i want to archive?

Thanks! --MahmoudAbbasAlDilfti (talk) 10:02, 20 June 2024 (UTC)

Hm, from that description all I can really say is “fill in the information which that field requires”. It sounds like you’re trying to use a template that can’t work unless a particular piece of information is provided. Can you get more specific about what you’re trying to do? Maybe a screenshot? ~ L 🌸 (talk) 04:38, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from Editor 5692 (17:08, 20 June 2024)

Hi,

I just wrote my first article. It was rejected. Can you help me to improve it in order that it will not be read promotional --Editor 5692 (talk) 17:08, 20 June 2024 (UTC)

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! This sounds like a frustrating start. The best way to avoid promotional writing is usually to write just 2-3 factual sentences with the basics, with citations to 3-4 super high quality sources. Often the sources are even more important than the specific words. What is the topic you’re trying to write about? If you link me to your 3 best sources (most independent, most in depth) I can give you my personal opinion about whether they will work for an article. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 04:42, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of A Spy on Mother Midnight

Question from Deolububble (14:33, 3 July 2024)

I did my first sandbox and it was deleted under 5 minutes. Trying to find out why --Deolububble (talk) 14:33, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

Hello Deolububble, and welcome to Wikipedia! It looks like your draft was deleted as being unambiguous advertising. Wikipedia is a reference encyclopedia, which aims to provide basic, neutral, factual information rather than praise or recommendations. If you want to try again, I suggest reading WP:BACKWARD and WP:YFA. You should also probably read WP:SIMPLECOI. Another good approach for learning encyclopedia-style writing is to start with just a "stub" article of 2-3 very well-sourced sentences covering the bare-bones basics. Let me know if you have any other questions, and happy editing. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 19:40, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

Hello Alawode Anuoluwapo Oluwafunmilayo, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a collaboratively-written encyclopedia, so there isn't really a way to prevent others from editing something: the whole goal is to write together. If you make a user page for yourself here, people will typically avoid editing it out of politeness. If there is an existing article that is getting vandalised a lot, you can request that the page be "protected" to limit who can edit it (though not so no one can edit). ~ L 🌸 (talk) 17:44, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Hello SuvGh, thanks for reaching out for help here. It looks like, shortly after your question to me, you received a response on the talk page, which captures the same advice I would have given you. More broadly, if you find that you are not reaching consensus through back-and-forth editing of an article, making a new topic on the Talk page is the best next step. If you think there is still a change that ought to be made at Guglielmo Marconi, you could try suggesting it on the Talk page and see if the editors there can assist with making it fit with the writing style, referencing, etc of a wikipedia article. I am happy to answer additional questions you may have, or for a faster reply you can also ask the mentors at the Teahouse. Happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 22:36, 2 October 2024 (UTC)

Administrator Elections: Call for Candidates

Administrator Elections | Call for Candidates

The administrator elections process has officially started! Interested editors are encouraged to self-nominate or arrange to be nominated by reviewing the instructions at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Call for candidates.

Here is the schedule:

  • October 8–14 - Candidate sign-up (we are here)
  • October 22–24 - Discussion phase
  • October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase

Please note the following:

  • The requirements to run are identical to RFA—a prospective candidate must be extended confirmed.
  • Prospective candidates are advised to become familar with the community's expectations of adminstrators, which are much higher than the minimum requirement of having extended confirmed status. This includes reviewing successful and unsuccessful RFAs, reading the essay Wikipedia:Advice for RfA candidates, and possibly requesting an optional poll on their chances of passing.
  • The process will have a one week call for candidates phase, a one week pause to set up SecurePoll, a three-day period of public discussion, followed by 7 days of no public discussion and a private vote using SecurePoll.
  • The outcomes of this process are identical to making requests for adminship. There is no official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA or administrator elections.
  • Administrator elections are also a valid means of regaining adminship for de-sysopped editors.

Ask any questions about the process at the talk page. A separate user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.

To avoid sending too many messages, this will be the last mass message sent about administrator elections. If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.

You're receiving this message because you signed up for the mailing list. To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself from the list.

Question from AmritAtman (16:50, 8 October 2024)

Hello! I just want to edit one specific article, which is one-sided (and I have legal documentation to that effect), and I want to create a page as well. Do I need to build up my experience? Can I go right into that edit?

Thank you,

Amrit Atman --AmritAtman (talk) 16:50, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

Hi AmritAtman, welcome to Wikipedia. In principle, Wikipedia is the encyclopedia anyone can edit, and only a few articles will prevent inexperienced articles from working on them. But your question here raises some red flags for me, so I don't want to encourage you too strongly without knowing more. It's extremely unusual for legal documentation to be relevant to writing a Wikipedia article, because Wikipedia is a tertiary source which just tries to summarize what has been published elsewhere (eg in newspapers, books, and scholarly research). What is the article that concerns you, and what seems to be the problem with it? ~ L 🌸 (talk) 02:55, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
I thought it was customary to cite sources when writing a wikipedia article? Forgive me. I misunderstood. AmritAtman (talk) 16:37, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
Concerning the page I wanted to edit, I was surprised to learn this morning that it's been deleted. It's a page on Eren Niazi. People have been engaged in slandering him on his wikipedia page, and I guess someone deleted it in the last week, so the question I posed to you is moot--probably due to such gross and baseless accusations. Anyway, I'll just create a new page. I've known Eren for 30 years, and am uniquely qualified to write a simple bio on him as the founder of Open Source Storage. AmritAtman (talk) 17:03, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
Hello AmritAtman, I do not advise re-creating the article. Please read this guide on writing about people you know. Sources cited on Wikipedia must meet the criteria described at WP:RS, particularly in being published and independent; legal documentation and personal knowledge do not qualify. Articles are deleted when there are not enough of that kind of source for a summary-style encyclopedia article to be written. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 16:18, 17 October 2024 (UTC)

Administrator Elections: Discussion phase

Administrator Elections | Discussion phase

The discussion phase of the October 2024 administrator elections is officially open. As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • October 22–24 - Discussion phase
  • October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase
  • November 1–? - Scrutineering phase

During October 22–24, we will be in the discussion phase. The candidate subpages will open to questions and comments from everyone, in the same style as a request for adminship. You may discuss the candidates at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Discussion phase.

On October 25, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote tallies cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's tally during the election. The suffrage requirements are different from those at RFA.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time, perhaps a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose). As this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!

Question from DCfootball09 (13:51, 24 October 2024)

Hi! I submitted my first article and it was denied and need some editing. I completed the step suggested. It there a way to alert the original reader to review again? --DCfootball09 (talk) 13:51, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

Hello DCfootball09, and welcome to Wikipedia! To request that a draft be re-reviewed after your edits, there is a "Resubmit" link at the very bottom of that big box above the article. In future, please don't remove that big box, since it's how Wikipedia tracks the progress of drafts. I put it back for you, so you should now be able to see a blue "Resubmit" button. If you have any other trouble, feel free to ask, and happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 16:16, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
Thank you so much! I have no idea how I did that mistakenly! I'm still learning and can't wait to expand my knowledge DCfootball09 (talk) 17:25, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
Learning to edit Wikipedia can be like trying to drink from a firehose -- lots of details to keep track of all at once! The best way to learn is by doing. Glad I could help in this instance and good luck with your future work. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 19:51, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
Morning! Any help you can give me with my article further? I'm trying not to be impatient but I'm so anxious haha DCfootball09 (talk) 16:35, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
If you're asking about Pat Bastien, it looks like that was already approved through AfC! I made a few polishing edits myself just now. If you want to continue improving the article, the first thing I notice that the page is an orphan (meaning no other pages link to it). The biography is also lacking a lot of info on his life before college. And it would be nice to add the page to some more categories -- I personally use Wikipedia:HotCat for that. Of all those, the orphan status seems most urgent to me. You could also start planning your next article! My advice there would be to start with a magazine or newspaper that covers topics of interest to you, and the next time you read an interesting, in-depth profile, go and see if you can use it to make or expand a Wiki article. I hope you have fun! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 18:55, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
Hi again! I noticed some of the content at Pat Bastien was removed because it didn't match the source it was cited to. I wanted to emphasize that verifiability is a crucial part of writing Wikipedia articles, so even if you know something is true from your familiarity with the topic, it needs to be in a published source somewhere else before we put it in the Wiki article. If you'd like help researching sources to put some info on Bastian's coaching philosophy back in the article, just let me know.
Regarding the tags for promotional language, spammers often remove those tags in bad faith, so it can look a little shady when a newbie removes their own promo/NPOV tag. It can also take a while to really learn how to write in Wikipedia's dry, factual style, so it's hard for a newbie to evaluate whether the tag is still appropriate. If you think you've fixed up an article enough that it's not promotional anymore, a good idea is to ask for a second look at the Teahouse.
Anyway, that's my unsolicited advice for now -- if you have any questions as you edit, or want to solicit more advice, just let me know! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 20:45, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
I will accept ALL of the advice! This is really fun just have to continue to refine until I get it just right. I truly appreciate you taking the time to explain. DCfootball09 (talk) 21:15, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

Question from Tres Libras (18:31, 23 November 2024)

Hello,

I’d like to create an article, but I’m not sure where to find good ideas for a topic. I’m open to working on anything and plan to draft it slowly in my sandbox. I won’t publish it until I’ve received your feedback.

Thank you! --— Tres Libras (talk) 18:31, 23 November 2024 (UTC)

Hello Tres Libras, and welcome to Wikipedia! Personally, I think it's easiest to start with a source of information first, and then see what articles it leads you to. (And keep in mind that expanding an existing article is often much more useful than making a new article.) So, I'd grab any book or long magazine article that interests you, and as you read, see if it has information that could be added to existing Wikipedia articles on related topics. If you really do want to do a whole article from scratch, I think a similar approach still applies -- look for some topic where you can find 2-3 in-depth sources about it but there's no Wikipedia article. WP:BACKWARD has more advice in this vein. Personally, I find there are a lot of books where there is plenty of information in book reviews but no Wikipedia article, so I work on those a lot. If you have more specific questions as you work, feel free to ask, and happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 21:59, 24 November 2024 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Question from Eternal-Opto-Mistic-Wonderer (14:47, 31 December 2024)

Good morning. Nothing to ask yet. And, I'm not sure I'll be a true editor. I'm more interested in learning what exists and positing what might be; that is, trying to "wonder" aloud aimlessly and seeking the worlds' response. --Eternal-Opto-Mistic-Wonderer (talk) 14:47, 31 December 2024 (UTC)

2025 Update from Women in Green

Hello LEvalyn:

2024 has wrapped up, and what a full year it was for WikiProject Women in Green! Over the past year, we hosted two edit-a-thons, one themed around women's history and another on women around the world. We also managed to achieve most of our 2024 annual goals, nominating 75 articles for GA, reviewing 64 GA nominations, nominating 8 articles for FAC, peer reviewing 3 articles and reviewing 10 FAC nominations. Excellent work, and thank you to everyone involved!

For 2025 we have a new set of goals for nominations and reviews. In particular, we would like to see more articles on our Hot 100 list being improved and nominated for GA this year. If you take a look at the list and see an article you are interested in contributing to, feel free to add it and yourself to our Hot 100 project discussion. You might even find someone interested in collaborating with you!

This year, as with every year, we hope you will join us in helping improve our coverage of women and women's works on this encyclopedia. Every contribution helps. We'll see you around!

Question from InekeCrezee (08:37, 5 January 2025)

Hello mentor, I am very happy to have your assistance! I have been battling fake information in my wikipedia page for many years. for some reason, my date of birth is coming up as 01 January 1950 and I am at my wits end trying to change this as it is incorrect. Please assist. Happy New Year and many thanks! Ineke Hendrika Martine Crezee --InekeCrezee (talk) 08:37, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

Hello Dr. Crezee, and welcome to Wikipedia! How frustrating. Wikipedia's policy is to to only include birthdays when they have been reported in multiple secondary sources or published by the person themselves. (You can read the policy here.) It looks like for now you've successfully removed the date; I have added your biography to my "watch list" and I will keep an eye out to make sure the date is not re-added. If you would like a birth year to be included, and for it to be the correct one, you could make a post on a public social media site that just says "For the record, I was born in XXXX!" and that can be used to put the correct year in the article. Just send me the link if you decide you want to do that.
Also -- as annoying as I'm sure this has been, since you have an account now, you could consider making improvements to Wikipedia's articles about linguistics topics! The humanities can get a bit overlooked here, and your expertise could be a real boon to the encyclopedia. As long as your changes include a citation (even an offline/paywalled one) they would be very welcome.
Let me know any time can help further! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 08:55, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
Oh, actually, looking more closely, it seems you intended to update the birthdate, not remove it! The birthdate is "hidden" in the article right now, so your change isn't visible to readers. I can un-hide it if that is what you prefer; just let me know. (Or you can un-hide it by deleting the "<!--" parts.) ~ L 🌸 (talk) 09:00, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

Question from Sugar candyy on Rivers State House of Assembly (20:51, 9 January 2025)

The current speaker of River State is Honorable Victor, Oko-Jumbo --Sugar candyy (talk) 20:51, 9 January 2025 (UTC)

Hello Sugar candyy, and welcome to Wikipedia! It sounds like you've found some outdated information that needs to be updated. This is a great kind of edit to make yourself, to learn the ropes of Wikipedia. Here are the general steps:
  1. Find a news article that says Victor Oko-Jumbo has become the Speaker of the Assembly.
  2. Click "edit" on the article to delete the current sentence and add something like, "Since [YEAR], the Speaker of the State Assembly is Victor Oko-Jumbo".
  3. Click the "cite" button and follow the instructions here to put a reference to your news article after the sentence.
If you have any trouble, let me know and I am glad to help, or you can get a faster response by asking at the Teahouse. Happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 23:02, 9 January 2025 (UTC)

Question from Aorclippy (16:58, 10 January 2025)

Pardon my query: What is the consensus format on dates? I often see dates posted as, for example, "March 10 1980", instead of "March 10th, 1980". Technically this is grammatically incorrect, but is this the accepted date format? --Aorclippy (talk) 16:58, 10 January 2025 (UTC)

Thanks for reaching out to check! It looks like in the Manual of Style at MOS:DATE (short version at WP:DATEOVERVIEW), the format “March 10 1980” is an error. The style is to use either “10 March 1980” or “March 10, 1980” (which just has to be consistent within the article). You can improve these when you find them by adding the missing comma. Happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 21:14, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
