The WikiProject Engineering assessment department focuses on assessing the quality of Wikipedia's Engineering articles.

Assessments are performed via parameters in the {{Engineering}} project banner which is posted to an article's talk page.

An assessment parameter (FA, GA, B, Start, or Stub) causes the article to be rated and grouped

Collaboration

The Engineering Collaboration of the week seeks to identify particular articles that would benefit from a significant collaborative effort. Every week, a single article is selected as the focus, and the project attempts to improve it, potentially to featured article standards.

Any articles dealing with some aspect of Engineering (except for current featured articles and featured article candidates) are eligible, and everyone is invited to nominate articles.

Peer review

The peer review department of WikiProject Engineering conducts peer review of articles on request. The primary objective is to encourage better articles by having contributors who may not have worked on articles to examine them and provide ideas for further improvement.

The peer review process is highly flexible and can deal with articles of any quality; however, requesting reviews on very short articles may not be productive, as there is little for readers to comment on.

All reviews are conducted by fellow editors—usually members of WikiProject Engineering. While there is a general intent to expand this process to allow for review by subject experts, the preparations for this are not yet complete.

Requested images

Wikimedia Commons has media related to Engineering.

The Requested images department aims to provide a collection of high-quality photographs, maps and images for use in Engineering articles. The department gathers existing public domain and free-license maps as well as creating new ones from other materials where no suitable maps can be found. All project members are welcome to request additional maps that may be needed for particular articles from the department.

Wikimedia Commons has images of the engineering field. Many of these photos would make useful additions to many of our articles here which may be lacking adequate illustrations. Please see the Commons categories at right, or try searching on Commons since many images available there are not properly categorized yet.

Outreach

The Outreach department acts as the project's central point of coordination for recruiting new members and maintaining the interest of current participants.

  • The article Direct metal deposition has been AfD nominated as is non sourced.(but here is a source I have just found on a PDF [1] ) This is a registered trade mark, so really ought, I think, be redirected to Selective laser sintering. The technique it depends on however is call Direct laser powder deposition and I don't seem to be able to find that. So maybe that needs a mention. I am out of date on this technology.   • There does not appear to be an engineering-focused article on the general concept(s) of sources and sinks. I'm a geographer with broad scientific/mathematical experience and NOT an engineer, but I think the public should be able to get an understanding of these important ideas beyond their use in ecology as discussed in Source–sink dynamics.     • I take an original or historical view, that source and sink are originally about Flow (fluid) and later were applied metaphorically. This suggest that, instead of a redirect to a hydraulic science article, it should be a broad rather than deep discussion of fluid flow, including source and sink and especially their metaphorical adaptations, as in electricity and ecology.

Isn't this the same as Integration Testing or are there moron bureacrats who view this as an extra step after I&T?

Can we replace the word "shakesdown" - I don't understand what it means. I'm not a software developer, but I've just come across a document on our intranet which shows Development --> SIT --> Regression so i wanted to understand what "SIT" and "Regression" means - and I can't fully understand what "shakesdown" means when refering to programming.

There is a distinct difference between Integration Testing (sometimes called Integration Testing in the small) and System Integration Testing (Integration Testing in the large). integration testing confirms that the units of a single system co-exist. Whereas System Integration testing confirms that multiple systems co-exist.

Once a system has been tested using a suite of tests there may be future releases. Regression Testing is the re-running of those previous tests to ensure that the system has not been regressed by any of changes.

I agree that System testing tests the integration of components into a system, and that System Integration testing tests the integration of systems. So, we probably shouldn't merge. Also, there's a statement about SIT being similar to unit testing. I strongly disagree with that. They're at two opposite ends of the spectrum. DRogers 16:16, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I guess we are clear about the difference between System Testing and Integration Testing. Even though they can be categorised as two different types of testing, they can be interchangably used (to some extent). For example, testing a few modules combined for flow in your software package can be called Intregration Testing, but testing all the modules combined for all possible flows can be called Integration Testing as well as System Testing.

System Integration Testing, can be defined as taking the best approach of both System and Integration Testing and doing it as a single test (depending on your needs and the demands of your software).

Like the previous comment by DRogers, claming that SIT is similar to Unit Testing, is preposterous !

Well, the way I see it,has integrating modules can be called Module Integration (though usually shortened to Integration). Integrating subsystems can be called Subsystem Integration. Integration systems can be called System Integration. I think I see a pattern. The real question is, what is the scope of each article, and what is the overlap? There are several grammar issues and a number of ambiguous and confusing word choices in this article. Here are a few examples:

Article neglects system hardware

Is the intention to cover only software and not the hardware? In the case of a PC/laptop it may be justifiable to some people to neglect hardware when discussing integration testing but not so for instrumentation. By "neglect" I mean to assume the hardware works perfectly and is not an experimental variable. As a systems engineer coming from a hardware background I could never justify this assumption. We need an article on SIT for complex hardware/software systems that points to this article. At the very least I would like to see the present article mention the limitations/risks of neglecting hardware when performing software SIT.

 Fixed I have altered the lede, with a citation, to start to remedy the scope problem in this article. It not only negected the sort of (electronic) system hardware that you were referring to, it also neglected all sorts of system components in non-electronic (or much-more-than-merely electronic) systems such as cars, aircraft, launch vehicles, ground transport prototype technologies like Hyperloop pods, spaceplanes, elevator systems, building equipment, etc., etc. All of these large systems of technology are the proper full scope of system integration testing.
The article still needs a LOT more work (nearly all of the software-specific material is unsourced; it is now challenged) and needs to get the fuller understanding of system integration testing fleshed out.
