The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the illustration workshop. Anyone can make a request for an illustration to be improved or created for a Wikipedia article. Clicking the "New Request" button will bring you to a standard template for submitting requests, as well as general advice that should be followed.

    Advice to requesters

    All requests:

    • Please make sure your request is "legitimate" by copyright. If the image(s) are in the public domain or freely licensed, you are fine. If the image(s) are "Fair use", there are only certain things we can do with them without falling afoul of Wikipedia's fair-use policies.
      • If you are requesting assistance with a copyright or fair-use image, don't display it on this page; place {{GLNF|Example.png|caption|align=left}} to create a link to it. Do not add the File: extension. Our fair-use policy does not allow displaying fair-use images out of their articles on ANY account.
    • Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
    • If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

    SVG requests:

    • Make sure your request can actually BE vectorized. Note that vector drawings are not suitable for certain applications. We generally use SVG format for icons, logos, drawings, maps, flags, and such. Certain things, photographs especially, are totally impossible to vectorize.
    • Per our non-free content policy, vectorization of copyrighted images is not permitted. If a vectorized non-free image is desired, seek out such an image from the copyright holder.

    Cabinet of Albania

    Fulfilled Requests

    Article(s): Cabinet of Albania

Request: Please fix and vectorise the complete logo Vinie007 20:33, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): Image's request under progression Request taken by Card Zero. for Cabinet of Albania logo - looks like a bit of a challenge. How much real-world shininess do I try to preserve in the vector version? The eagle would be disappointing if it was just flat yellow. I'll try using gradients.  Card Zero  (talk) 13:16, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Card Zero, for the ministry of foreign affairs logo you can use the eagle in File:Albania state emblem.svg. -- Orionisttalk 22:39, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I incorporated it. You don't happen to have a globe and laurel wreath svg kicking around as well?  Card Zero  (talk) 11:08, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I Love the result, and i find it good enough :D, hopefully the Cabinet of Albanian main logo will look so good --Vinie007 11:32, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand the eagle's heads (in the cabinet logo). Do they have their beaks open or closed? Protruding tongues? Overbite? I wish I had a closeup. Will have to fudge it.  Card Zero  (talk) 11:58, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think it has an tongue like in this picture --Vinie007 13:14, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think your best bet is to use the heads from the state emblem and modify them to fit the image. By the way the font used in the logo is Trajan Pro, most probably Bold, and you can take the border from File:Mississippi-StateSeal.svg or File:Seal of North Carolina.svg. Regards, -- Orionisttalk 13:47, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That would have been useful information last night, before I spent ages adjusting the glyphs of Garamond. :) It's going OK, though, and I've begun drawing the eagle (autotracing it seemed a non-starter), but it must wait some 12 hours or so now while I do some real-life things.  Card Zero  (talk) 17:55, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Still one logo left --Vinie007 10:39, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

3-D Dodecahedron Flat-fold Wikipedia Logo Handout

    Article(s): Not Applicable

Request: This graphic object will be used at Wikipedia Ambassador Program Educational Outreach events. McMormor (talk) 20:41, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): Hi - I've asked around friends who are obsessed with polyhedrons for a solution, but none of us know how to tackle this. There's several difficulties here, the first two theoretical, the last practical.

    1. The dodecahedron is uniform, whereas the actual puzzle-globe is not. It's hard to see from the official rendering in the side-bar, but the pieces in the equator is actually bigger (not just perspective), and the pieces towards the poles are tiny.
    2. The puzzle-pieces are 4-sided, and it's not clear how they can fit non-awkwardly on 5-sided planes.
    3. How does one map from a spherical object to a dodecahedron without distortion?

So, at this point I'm not sure if it's doable. However, if you're willing to settle for something simple, like a single character on each face, that would be imminently doable. Jon C (talk) 19:30, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, I might have goofed ... I posted my reply to your talk page. So I'll repost it here so it's contained with my request.
I apologize for taking so long to respond to your post. I'm a MSU-Bozeman (Montana) Campus Ambassador and these have been the last two weeks of classes for Spring 2011, so I’ve been a bit busier than normal (I also work on campus in the library). Thanks for your patience.
If you think you can generate something that “looks like the wikipedia puzzle” then your idea of a single character on each face sounds great.
I was going to try and create a mock-up over the summer, --literally cut out all the characters and then do a paper cut-out dodecahedron in the same scale and then glue them on. My thinking was if you folks had an actual mock-up model then it would be easier to translate it into an actual graphic. What do you think?
Again, thanks for you patience and help! And sorry for my multiple replies. I’m still very much a newbie wikipedian. McMormor (talk) 17:04, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Here's something for you to cut, paste, and play with; it's probably easier than a hand-drawn version because the shapes are precise in this template. I don't know how the puzzle pieces will fit on here, and I haven't scissors and tape one myself yet. Any mockup that clears up the proposal will be helpful. Jon C (talk) 21:46, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Sweet!
I've printed it. Print is great! Will cut, tape, play with it this afternoon, and report back with results! Nice. —Preceding unsigned comment added by McMormor (talkcontribs) 17:05, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    I made one. Pretty cool!--ragesoss (talk) 21:17, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Cool stuff! Seeing it in flesh and blood - well, pixels - makes me wonder if we should break each pentagon face into 5 small triangles, and make each face a puzzle piece. The puzzle-pieces would be three-sided, which may look odd (and I'll need to figure out how to make them cross seamlessly from one to the next), but the tilings would then be regular. The resulting object will then have an apparent 60 faces, quasi-matching (off top of my head) the 54 characters in the wikimedia set - possibly with open top / places for drawing on. Ideally this would be with some actual curvature to the center of the pentagon (so it's not just apparently flat) - is there an equivalent flat-fold that can do that? Great Seals of the Republic of Texas

Article(s): Seal of Texas, Republic of Texas, Other articles

Request: We currently do not have the 2 former Seals of the Republic of Texas, both of which can be seen on this page, as well as HERE and HERE. It would be great to have them added in SVG format. The first seal was used from 1836 to 1839. The second was used from 1839-1845, and was almost identical to the current state seal provided above, but with "Republic of Texas" instead of "The State of Texas" as the inscription. As far as I know, the first seal was never coloured, however the second seal was, so please use the same colouring scheme as the current State Seal for the second seal of the Republic, and upload them as "Great Seal of the Republic of Texas ()" with the years of use in the brackets. They can both be uploaded to Commons as PD as they're certainly too old for copyright. Thank you Fry1989 (talk) 05:42, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Want a 2π-unrolled version of our existing π-unrolled animation

Article(s): Radian, Turn (geometry), Perimeter and Circumference

Request: This is a great animation, and this is a request for a (relatively minor) variant of it. The current version shows a circle of diameter one whose circumference is π. In many contexts it would be nice to have a version where the circle has radius one instead (diameter two) and a circumference of 2π. Because this is an animation, I'm not sure SVG enters the picture (I'd defer to the illustrators if I'm wrong on that; the photography workshop has confirmed that it isn't theirs just because it is a raster rather than an SVG). The new image would not replace the existing one but would have a new name (Twopi-unrolled.gif, I suppose, unless someone has a better idea). Discussion of the mathematics is at File talk:Pi-unrolled-720.gif#Radians and WT:MATH has been consulted (on 23 April 2011). Kingdon (talk) 01:17, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
