The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the illustration workshop. Anyone can make a request for an illustration to be improved or created for a Wikipedia article. Clicking the "New Request" button will bring you to a standard template for submitting requests, as well as general advice that should be followed.

    Advice to requesters

    All requests:

    • Please make sure your request is "legitimate" by copyright. If the image(s) are in the public domain or freely licensed, you are fine. If the image(s) are "Fair use", there are only certain things we can do with them without falling afoul of Wikipedia's fair-use policies.
      • If you are requesting assistance with a copyright or fair-use image, don't display it on this page; place {{GLNF|Example.png|caption|align=left}} to create a link to it. Do not add the File: extension. Our fair-use policy does not allow displaying fair-use images out of their articles on ANY account.
    • Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
    • If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

    SVG requests:

    • Make sure your request can actually BE vectorized. Note that vector drawings are not suitable for certain applications. We generally use SVG format for icons, logos, drawings, maps, flags, and such. Certain things, photographs especially, are totally impossible to vectorize.
    • Per our non-free content policy, vectorization of copyrighted images is not permitted. If a vectorized non-free image is desired, seek out such an image from the copyright holder.

@Snow Lion Fenian: Image's request under progression Request taken. for design 3, despite SVG transformations being a pain in the ass. QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 13:06, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Snow Lion Fenian:  Done but I need author and copyright/licensing information before I upload. QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 13:41, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Preferably just edit my Commons sandbox with the information and ping me afterwards. QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 14:29, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@QuickQuokka: Thank you, and sorry for the delay in responding. Well, all three designs originate from BBC Derby. According to the original website, the designer of the original concept was Leon Summers, with BBC Derby modifying his submission to create what was known as "Design 3". Which is also exactly what BBC Derby did with Martin Enright's submission, modifying it to create "Design 1" (which was of course chosen as Derbyshire's flag). Hence, I'd recommend giving the new file the same CR tag as "Design 1". Hope this helps. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 15:29, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Snow Lion Fenian: The description page of the file says it's released to the public domain by the author, and supposedly also the author (I don't really believe the uploader is the author), but there's no source to verify that unfortunately. QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 16:25, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@QuickQuokka: Good point, and profuse apologies for the excessively long delay in getting back to you. Well, I certainly don't pretend to be an expert on CR licenses on Wikipedia. The impression I've gotten is that the uploader wanted to waive their rights to the file, but went about it the wrong way, resulting in using a license that creates a slight bit of confusion. After considering it all, I'd now recommend giving the new file the "Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported", in order to cover the same bases while making it clear that the uploader is not the original designer. Hope this helps. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 18:43, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Snow Lion Fenian:  Done QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 10:02, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Snow Lion Fenian: Now looking at it after having uploaded it, I see I accidentally used the wrong flower design. Should I fix this? QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 10:04, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@QuickQuokka: Oh yes, if you think you can correct the flower, then don't let me stop you. But no pressure if you can't. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 14:34, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Vectorized image

    Serpent labret with articulated tongue
    Request
Could someone please create a vectorized image of the four illustrations on pages 115–117 of this article? Please create it as a single image, with A in the top left, B in the top right, C in the bottom left, and D in the bottom right. Happy to talk through any of the issues. Thanks, --Usernameunique (talk) 02:43, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Image's request under progression Request taken. However I'm unsure if what you're asking for violates the copyright of the source material (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). Wouldn't making a chart like that be considered a derivative? afever15:52, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much, afever. I don't think the image is under copyright. The 1955 images were published in a journal without a copyright notice (see here), so should be in the public domain by now. Also, the underlying image is a sketch of a design that's some 500 years old, and thus PD. (It's similar to this file, which is based on a 1972 sketch of a more than 1000-year-old design.) --Usernameunique (talk) 00:44, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I see. Sorry, I'm still new to copyright and that sort of stuff on Wikipedia. I'll start working on that shortly. Thanks :) afever02:39, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Afever, no rush, but just wanted to check in and see if you've had any luck with this. Thanks, --Usernameunique (talk) 19:32, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about the delay, Usernameunique. Please let me know if there is anything you'd like changed or added. afever17:19, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
afever, thanks very much for this! These are really well done, and look great. Could you please make the following minor tweaks?
    • Top left: 1) Please remove where the line at the mouth crosses over the tongue. 2) Please remove the gray from the portion of the tongue which is inside the serpent's mouth. 3) Please put a small "A" at the bottom left of the image.
    • Top right: Please put a small "B" at the bottom left of the image.
    • Bottom left: Please add the three "plugs" (the things with diagonal lines). Please also put a small "C" at the bottom left of the images.
    • Bottom right: 1) Please add the three "plugs". 2) Please define the end of the serpent's tail (this may require making the surrounding gray area a little larger). 3) Please make the surrounding gray color (i.e., the part that was added in this image) a bit different (e.g., with dots) than the interior gray color (i.e., the color that's in all of the images). 4) Please put a small "D" at the bottom left of the image.
Once this is done I may also ask you to add the numbers that are in the original, but (if you're willing to bear with me) I'd like to first see how it looks without the numbers. Thanks again, --Usernameunique (talk) 19:28, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This image of the cell layout at Barnimstrasse women's prison is obviously in German. I would like it converted to English using a font that is similar to what is there if possible. Perhaps an key can be added possibly. Ideally it will be done in diagram. I can supply the translations in table. It will take a few days to do it, assuming this can be done. My intention is to create it as a svg file.

    • What do you mean by "Ideally it will be done in diagram."?
    • Yes I need a translation.
    • That image includes a lot of measurements, and other info, you will have to tell me how much info you want in it. --always ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 15:34, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Scope creep Just so you know I'm working on it and will need the translations pretty soon, thanks. --always ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 18:20, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Goran tek-en: Quick update. I've done about 60% of the translations. I will get the rest done today and hopefully get it finished. scope_creepTalk 04:02, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    ----
Those drafts are PNG versions of the original SVG file I'm working in and will upload to commons.
Those drafts are shown for proofreading only.
    ----
We haven't discussed how much details you think a viewer should see when the image is in 100%.
The draft I show you here a quit big in pixels, 511*2377 px,
Draft_200-1. but then you can see in detail. If you want it smaller I can do that but maybe it's better to set a size when used if necessary.
Check this draft and give me feedback, thanks. --always ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 15:14, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Goran tek-en: That is cleaned up perfectly. That is excellent, its exactly what I was trying to get to, but couldn't. Anyway, I've got a partial list that I've created of the translations. I've still to do the top left to do and to clean into English. I'll do it tommorrow afternoon. I've kept the numbers, like "8 single cells", to show widths, so I guess putting in the distance markets would be ideal, with some clean design. They are located at User:Scope creep/Sandbox B22. Ping me if you need anything. scope_creepTalk 22:11, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Scope creep Have you had the time to translate the last part? --always ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 11:21, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Goran tek-en: I've not managed to get it done yet. Last couple of days have been really busy. I'm free today to work on it. I'll do it now. scope_creepTalk 11:31, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Scope creep I didn't mean to stress you, we all have other things in life, take your time. --always ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 11:51, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Goran tek-en: Life getting in the way, I guess. There is several abbreviations I couldn't translate, when I looked at them last week. Got some help for it, so on its way. scope_creepTalk 22:15, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Afternoon @Goran tek-en: I think that's it now. The finalised list is still in User:Scope creep/Sandbox B22. I think all of them have been identified. Its been a bit of work to it and then to get them checked by @Lambiam:. I couldn't have done it without him. If there is any missing, please flag them. I'm really looking forward to see how it looks. scope_creepTalk 15:28, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Map of Italy & Republic of Venice 1494

    Request
I've tried to make a correction to the file, but the system refutes to upload it because of some XML error, which currently don't know how to fix. For my correction see this image (which mostly based on this map). Specifically, the map in question is mainly based on the early 20th century Shepherd's map which has several more or less significant errors. This map still has many errors, but the most prominent error are the borders of the en:Venetian Dalmatia, Hungarian Kingdom and Ottoman Empire which must be corrected because are very misleading because are completely historically inaccurate, antedating them for almost 400 years. The majority of the en:Dalmatian hinterland in 1494 was under Hungarian(-Croatian) Kingdom (see this map, and Ivetic's work Eastern Adriatic: Historical atlas of one littoral part of Mediterranean, pg. 161 map 59, pg. 162 map 61, pg. 166 map 70, pg. 167 map 71–72), and with the Ottoman conquest by the 1520s this part of Dalmatia i.e. Croatia was re-organized as en:Croatian vilayet and after the en:Siege of Klis (1537) incorporated into en:Sanjak of Klis and partly later into en:Sanjak of Krka (this map and this map show Ottoman expansion into Croatia). Venetians in their historical sources before Ottoman expansion often called the Dalmatian cities as part of some "Sclavonian" or "Croatian" country, and after the Ottoman expansion called the Dalmatian hinterland as "Banadego" which was a reference to the historical fact that this part of the region was under the governorship of Ban of Croatia (for such and more info see Fine, Ivetic etc., it is common historical knowledge in academic literature and easily proven in historical sources). In other words, both the Hungarian-Venetian and Hungarian-Ottoman borders in 1494 were not even close as shown in the map. Dalmatia was for several centuries divided between the bigger Ottoman Dalmatia and smaller Venetian Dalmatia (map of Eastern Adriatic 1558, map and map of Bosnia Elayet 1600). The borders of Venetian Dalmatia which are shown in the map are exactly the modern period borders of Dalmatia which came to be in the late 17th and mostly in the 18th century, while the Ottoman Empire borders are exactly the modern period borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina which came to be with Treaty of Passarowitz (1718). This is all wrong, and unfortunately readers who have low knowledge about the pre-Venetian i.e. Ottoman and Hungarian-Croatian history of Dalmatia often share this map/variations on social media and elsewhere, often followed by Italian irredentist commentary how the whole modern region of Dalmatia was "Italian" for 500 years. What's worse, the SVG file was used to make many language PNG and SVG variations which are used and spreading such misconceptions on many language editions of Wikipedia. For the beginning, we need a correction of the original SVG file (and possibly English PNG), so other editors can correct other SVG & PNG files from there. --Miki Filigranski (talk) 16:48, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Sm faysal Hi back, can you please explain to me the steps? how exactly you did? Riad Salih (talk) 03:08, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Riad Salih Thanks for asking. You can extract vector elements of a PDF file by opening the PDF file in inkscape software.
    1. Download Inkscape from www.inkscape.org (version 0.46 and above)
    2. Download the PDF you want to convert
    3. Run Inkscape
    4. Open the PDF file you want convert in Inkscape (not Acrobat) by clicking File>Open..
    5. Uncheck Embed images on the box that comes up and click OK
    6. Wait a little while as Inkscape converts it
    7. Click File>Save As..
    8. Under Save as type:, choose "Plain SVG (*.svg)"
    9. Click Save in the bottom right corner
    10. Done! You now have an SVG file with the same name as the PDF, but with the .svg extension
Note 1: Try to avoid PDF files having huge pages. In that case just print the target page with Microsoft PDF printer or any other virtual PDF printers.
You can follow the instructions described here Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Resources/PDF conversion to SVG. Beside this you can search [youtube.com Youtube] for details tutorials. Hope this will help. Please feel free to ask anything you want to know. Sm faysal (talk) 03:34, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate your guidance. I already have Inkscape installed, but I haven't used this method before. Typically, I would open the file with Photoshop and select "Images" instead of "Pages" to view all the images in the PDF. Then, I would extract the desired image and convert it to SVG. However, based on your suggestion, it seems like using Inkscape directly would be a better approach. Thank you for sharing. Riad Salih (talk) 03:38, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
