The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the photography workshop. Anyone can make a request for a photograph to be improved for a Wikipedia article. The standard format for making a request is shown below, along with general advice, and should be followed.

Advice to requesters

All requests:

  • Please make sure your request is "legitimate" by copyright. If the image(s) are in the public domain or freely licensed, you are fine. If the image(s) are "Fair use", there are only certain things we can do with them without falling afoul of Wikipedia's fair-use policies.
    • If you are requesting assistance with a copyright or fair-use image, don't display it on this page; place {{GLNF|Example.png|caption|align=left}} to create a link to it. Do not add the File: extension. Our fair-use policy does not allow displaying fair-use images out of their articles on ANY account.
  • Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
  • If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

SVG requests:

  • Make sure your request can actually BE vectorized. Note that vector drawings are not suitable for certain applications. We generally use SVG format for icons, logos, drawings, maps, flags, and such. Certain things, photographs especially, are totally impossible to vectorize.
  • Per our non-free content policy, vectorization of copyrighted images is not permitted. If a vectorized non-free image is desired, seek out such an image from the copyright holder.

Crop, contrast, less shadow noise on two old b&w images about film-making

[edit]
Article(s)
Destined for inclusion in the (forthcoming) collage {{Welcome mentee/Screen arts}}; to be used for welcoming new users on their talk page via transclusion from template {{Welcome mentee}}. (Compare existing collage: {{Welcome mentee/History}}.)
Request
  1. (Loveland): please snip off the three lines of text above the image, and adjust contrast for pleasing look at small size.
  2. (Adverse 1936): there is mottling throughout the image, especially in deep shadow; if this could be minimized, that would be great. (I tried making up a word: de-mottling, but I found 'reduce shadow noise' online, so I hope that's the right term.) Also, at 600px it doesn't quite look sharp, but at 100px I don't notice it, so maybe this doesn't matter.
Keep in mind that these will be displayed at a small size (see {{Welcome mentee/History}} for an example), so no need to optimize for full size; as long as the images look decent at 100px (or whatever the individual image size is in that collage), then it's fine. Image's request under progression Request taken by Liandrei (talk) 22:54, 6 January 2026 (UTC).[reply]
Done the first one, cropped, straightened and contrast/colour adjusted. Shall see what can do about the noise on the Adverse image! Liandrei (talk) 22:56, 6 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, the Loveland one is great now. If the second one is too much of a pain, I can do without, but if it's easy, then great. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 00:06, 7 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Done - Reworked from the original higher-res Internet Archive scan and used less harsh contrast increase to reduce the mottling in the darker areas, also kept the original sepia tone as more detail was lost in the previous conversion to B&W. Can the picture be edited so that his face appears more brightly lit? I'm not sure if this is possible. Also, not sure if focus can be improved?-- Jahaza (talk) 18:56, 6 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Request
Hello, could the white patch on David Marshall (with pipe) be fixed? The image itself could use some cleanup, but the size is already quite low so it's fine if nothing can be done in that regard. Thanks in advance, – actuall7 (talk | contrib) 01:01, 8 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
