Oxford commas

You recently reverted fifteen of my edits with the identical edit summary of "WP:OXFORD is only concerned with when Oxford commas or the lack thereof create ambiguity. This is not one of those cases."

I would call your attention to the following:

Key quote: "When either of two styles are acceptable it is inappropriate for a Wikipedia editor to change from one style to another unless there is some substantial reason for the change."

Also see the third paragraph at Wikipedia:Manual of Style which says: "Where more than one style is acceptable under the Manual of Style, editors should not change an article from one of those styles to another without a good reason. Edit warring over optional styles is unacceptable. If discussion cannot determine which style to use in an article, defer to the style used by the first major contributor.

Please explain where, exactly, you used an oxford comma to reduce ambiguity or otherwise improve the page in this edit. Another example is this edit, where the meaning is the same with and without the oxford comma. Please see Serial comma#Resolving ambiguity for examples of actual ambiguity, Also note that sometimes adding an oxford comma can create ambiguity; see Serial comma#Creating ambiguity.

I am going to ask you to go back through those reverts and undo them, keeping those where your edit actually resolves ambiguity. Then we can look at the rest, and it is very likely that in the remaining cases we will both agree that you were correct in adding the comma.

Adding double spaces after punctuation marks, on the other hand, is never correct, and the Wikimedia software removes it when displaying the page. See Sentence spacing. I am going to ask you to please stop doing that.

Also, see WP:BRD and note that it is BRD, not BRRD. --Guy Macon (talk) 21:06, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

I would draw your attention to Wikipedia:OXFORD itself, which says absolutely nothing beyond that it is the editor's preference which style to use when ambiguity or lack thereof is not an issue.
I also find it amusing that you accuse me of edit-warring when you were the one who started reverting me over tiny insignificant things. Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty | Averted crashes 21:15, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
I didn't accuse you of edit warring. You did ignore the good advice found in WP:BRD and WP:TALKDONTREVERT, but you have not violated WP:EW so far. If you had, I would consider myself partly to blame, because it takes two to edit war. What you call "tiny insignificant things" are not allowed on Wikipedia, as I explained by quoting the arbcom cases where that policy was established. Please make your intentions clear. Are you going to stop or not? You don't have to agree with Wikipedia's policies, but you do have to follow them. --Guy Macon (talk) 23:27, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

Re. this edit: I agree with the added serial comma. Even if you hold that the final item in a list must not be preceded by a comma (wherever practical), that list needs the final comma because it is a complex list. (I like serial comma; I think it is the trend, and is heading toward the accepted rule. It's a simpler rule, and better safe than sorry.) For those who are highly annoyed by the opposite preference, serial commas, there could be a middle ground: Wiktionary has created a template to encode optionally droppable commas. (See wikt:Template:,.) Each logged-in user can set a preference whether the renderer should show or hide such commas. (Appallingly, the default is to hide.) Wiktionary also has a droppable serial semicolon! ((English Wikipedia does not have these features. Template:, already redirects to something else; those uses would have to be cleaned out first. Template:; already does something else.))

Re. this edit: I have no problem with these added commas. These are not serial commas; they have a different function. I disagree with adding second inter-sentence spaces – you should be taking them out, for two reasons: consistency across articles, and searchability. I often select and copy text from the article body (Ctrl+C) and then immediately search the page for it (Ctrl+F Ctrl+V); that usefully jumps the selection between the rendered text and its markup – UNLESS someone has put more than one consecutive space in the markup. Extra spaces between sentence or words here are cruft (because rendering discards them all). Their semirandom distribution is pointless noise, or perhaps steganography from Chaos itself. I think single spaces in markup is the trend, and is heading toward the accepted rule, on English Wikipedia and everywhere else. (In desktop publishing, I always use two normal spaces between sentences. Word processing, desktop publishing, etc. were supposedly going to automatically create wider spacing between sentences (sentence spacing), but I haven't seen it happen, and I don't expect it to happen, because it's hard to define a rule that reliably makes sure never to put a sentence-space after an abbreviation that doesn't end a sentence.) - A876 (talk) 08:17, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

Sentence spacing

Could you please stop adding double spaces after the ends of sentences? Is there some reason to do this? Kendall-K1 (talk) 22:07, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

No response from Whoop whoop pull up, but he has continued doing it.[1] --Guy Macon (talk) 04:01, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

Could you at least please apply the comma and spacing changes as two separate edits? It's hard for me to tell just from the diff where you have changed commas and where you have changed spacing. Kendall-K1 (talk) 15:45, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

You're still doing this. You don't want to talk about it? Kendall-K1 (talk) 22:29, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

As of July 2018 still doing this, as on Amílcar Cabral International Airport, and never explains why, far less discuss. I call this disruptive editing and there must/should be some kind of treatment/remedy. Jan olieslagers (talk) 21:24, 22 July 2018 (UTC)

New template for Bluebook

FYI, I just created {{MBTA Bluebook 2014}} to be used anytime the Bluebook needs to be cited. They just moved the web link which broke a lot of citations; this way, a single edit can fix all of them. I'd be much obliged if you could use the template when doing future editing. (Don't worry about switching existing instances - someone with AWB will mop them up shortly). ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Whoop whoop pull up. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Voting for the Military history WikiProject Historian and Newcomer of the Year is ending soon!

Time is running out to voting for the Military Historian and Newcomer of the year! If you have not yet cast a vote, please consider doing so soon. The voting will end on 31 December at 23:59 UTC, with the presentation of the awards to the winners and runners up to occur on 1 January 2017. Just taking another look at this diagram: would it make more sense if the  Blue Line  headings were on the left and the BRB&L on the right, so that the Winthrop Loop is under the correct company? Useddenim (talk) 13:34, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

Mmm, good idea; I'll get right on it! Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty | Averted crashes 15:13, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
@Useddenim: There, sides switched; does it look all right? Did I miss anything? Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty | Averted crashes 15:18, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
I flipped "Orient Heights Yard", "Blue Line to Bowdoin", and "Atlantic Avenue Elevated" as well. Looking at the parent article, I think the diagram is going to have to come out of the infobox the that the collapsible section lines up correctly. Useddenim (talk) 16:56, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
And now that it's out of the infobox, it's still cramped. I honestly have no idea what's going on... Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty | Averted crashes 17:20, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
Hmm… everything lines up on my computer(Macintosh/Firefox) now, both in the article and on the Template: page. (I'll go take a look on my wife's PC.) Useddenim (talk) 18:10, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
Well, I just made a couple changes (notably removing the connection at Lynn, as there was no connection whatsoever between the two railroads) and trying to narrow it. Now it displays fine on the template page to me, but not on the article. I think the padding is just a problem all told - is there a way to code the text so it doesn't need padding, especially on the collapsible section? Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:31, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

That's funny; I've viewed the template on three different computers in a total of five different computer-browser combinations, in most of which it's misaligned even when outside the infobox.

  • My trusty Acer Aspire V5 laptop, running Windows 8.1, 1366x768 resolution:
    • Google Chrome: The collapsible section is shifted slightly to the left of where it should be; it's a bit annoying, but not too bad, at least compared to
    • Mozilla Firefox: Said section is shifted to the left by an amount greater than half the width of the route lines. Quite jarring.
  • My HP Compaq 6910p laptop, running Windows 7 Service Pack 1, 1280x800 resolution:
    • Chrome: Collapsible section shifted to the left by about the same amount as it was in Chrome on the Acer, although possibly a bit less.
    • Firefox: Lines up perfectly, for once—the only one of my five available computer-browser combinations for which this is the case.
  • My iPad Mini 3, running iOS 10.2, 2048x1536 resolution (Retina Display):
    • Safari: Collapsible section shifted very slightly to the left. Of the four computer-browser combinations where the collapsible section is misaligned to any degree, this one has the least misalignment.

Whew! Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty | Averted crashes 21:56, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

@Jc86035 and Sameboat: Since you’re the ones maintaining {{Routemap}}, can you look in to this? Useddenim (talk) 23:19, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

Bradford Yard

Thanks adding the yards to commuter rail RDTs. One thing about Bradford Yard - it's parallel to Bradford station, rather than before it on the line. Trains can either go through the station on the two platform tracks, or go around it on the two yard tracks. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 03:42, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

Do you own Tremont Street Subway: A Century of Public Service and Boston's Commuter Rail: Second Section? I recently was given duplicate copies of these two as gifts, and it looks like they're well-stocked in local libraries so I'm unlikely to be able to donate them there. If you'd like either or both for free, you have right of first refusal. Cheers, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 19:25, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

I currently have a copy of Boston's Commuter Rail: Second Section (as well as a duplicate copy of Boston's Commuter Rail: The First 150 Years; would you happen to know anybody who could use a copy of it?), but not of Tremont Street Subway: A Century of Public Service, which I would like, if it's all right with you. Do be aware that my current residence is in Minnesota, so it might require more postage than otherwise (or not; I'm really not very familiar with U.S. postage rates). In any case, thanx!  :-) Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty | Averted crashes 19:16, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

Due to current news, I was perusing the VX article, and got somewhat confused, at least partially due to this edit you made back in 2014. The problem is that hydroperoxide is merely a redirect to Organic peroxide, which is not that informative (and in this particular case, probably misleading). Eventually, I figured out my answer (the women in question almost certainly washed off with hydrogen peroxide), but this was complicated by the fact that the diagrams immediately below show Sodium Hydroxide for both cleavages (P-S and P-O). I suspect it's worth cleaning that up to indicate specifically H2O2 as a destructive agent. Since I'm not enough of a chemist to approach that, and I don't have full access to the references, can I ask you to consider revising the text to make it clearer to the legion of amateurs who are shortly going to peruse this article? Thanks, Tarl N. (discuss) 02:48, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

An update from the Sustainability Initiative

Thank you for supporting the Sustainability Initiative!

Hi, Whoop whoop pull up! Thank you again for supporting the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 200 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.

What's new?

We are writing you this message because there is great news: The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has finally passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Also, we have created a cool logo and found a nice name for the project which you can see on the right :-)

What's next?

Currently, we are working with Wikimedia Foundation staff to make sustainability a key priority for the selection of a new location for Wikimedia servers in Singapore. Also, we have presented the Wikimedia Foundation with a green energy roadmap to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.

Please help!

Let's keep this project moving forward – and there are several ways in which you can help:

  • Ask other Wikipedians to sign the project page as well – this way we can show the Wikimedia Foundation that this is an issue that the community really cares about.
  • Talk to Wikimedians you know about the importance of reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement.
  • Improve and translate the project page on Meta.

If you have any questions, you can contact us on on Meta. Again, thank you very much for your support! --Aubrey and Gnom (talk) 09:50, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

FLASH Memory

Although FLASH memory is a non volatile memory, it is also a form of read only memory. FLASH memory is EEPROM, that is 'electrically alterable READ ONLY memory' with much of the sense amplifiers and erase logic missing. It qualifies as read only, because it is not truly a read write memory as it is quite impossible to change a single byte (or even a single bit) within its structure. The minimum amount of memory that can be changed is dependent on its architecture, but most architectures require 64 blocks (each block being several kilobytes in size) to be erased to facilitate the changing of a single byte. Most implementations of FLASH memory include a controller that makes this process transparent to the user, but that is a feature of the memory/controller pair, but not of the memory itself. 86.142.86.17 (talk) 17:00, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Whoop whoop pull up. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Hello, Whoop whoop pull up. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Nephric portal system".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. JMHamo (talk) 12:16, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
