ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:42, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

Question from VampireEmpire mp3 (21:13, 19 November 2024)

this isn't really about editing I suppose, but could I write about myself? --VampireEmpire mp3 (talk) 21:13, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

Hi, you can write an introduction on your page, or if you meet Wikipedia:BIO you can create an article about yourself, but I highly recommend reading Wikipedia:COI first. Hope this helps, Encoded  Talk 💬 09:21, 21 November 2024 (UTC)

Thank you!

Hi Encoded!

Thanks very much for your help with changes to Dashun Wang's page. I really appreciate it. The article is much improved! I think I've tagged you on his talk page (Talk:Dashun Wang) in response to your question and in an additional request. Please let me know if you need any more information from me.

Thanks again! Moose181 (talk) 23:25, 18 November 2024 (UTC)

Bybit

Hi, could you check the Bybit article? It was previously deleted through an AfD discussion that you initiated about a year ago. I'm wondering if the article's content has since been improved. Ckfasdf (talk) 23:20, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

A quick note in this topic. That article has now been renominated for deletion; see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bybit (2nd nomination). I am notifying all participants in the previous AfD. Thanks. Dclemens1971 (talk) 18:15, 26 November 2024 (UTC)

How do I write an article --RMLLx (talk) 04:24, 26 November 2024 (UTC)

Hey @RMLLx so sorry for taking so long to get back to you, is there a specific element of writing you need help with? The welcome message I've placed on your talk page should have some links you'll find useful. Thanks, Encoded  Talk 💬 00:38, 11 December 2024 (UTC)

Question from Dgonzal8nscc (12:40, 5 December 2024)

Good morning, I am wondering what I need to do to get some help on edits I am doing on an article for a college page. There is someone who continues to undo all my edits and the information that is currently there is not accurate. --Dgonzal8nscc (talk) 12:40, 5 December 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Dgonzal8nscc, welcome to Wikipedia! Since you're an employee of the college you have a conflict of interest, and I highly recommend reading Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. I noticed that you've started a conversation with another editor on the talk page, and I'd advise you continue to work with them there to resolve the issues, if you need an extra pair or eyes please ping me a message and I'll drop by!
Since you have a COI, you need to request edits to a page that you're connected to. You can do this at Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard, this will then be reviewed by one of the edit request reviewers (I'm one too, so if you have trouble please feel free to message me!) who will decide if it should be added, or provide feedback to improve it.
The welcome message on your talk page may also be helpful in starting out as well!
If you have any questions I'm here to help! Encoded  Talk 💬 00:37, 11 December 2024 (UTC)

Citation needed banners

You may think sticking such banners on articles is a useful thing, I do not. Essentially, it is just saying that something is incomplete, but I cannot be bothered to fix it. Instead I will stick a great big ugly banner on an article and some other schmuck can do the work. Try fixing problems, rather than just highlighting them. Then you will be doing something that is really useful. Urselius (talk) 17:34, 7 December 2024 (UTC)

Hello, please may I ask which articles you are referring to? It may be that I did not have time to complete the section but still wished to flag it for later, which is what these banners may be used for. Instead of posting messages like these on my talk page may I suggest that if you have a problem with the banner, you may decide to resolve the issue, or instead place a polite message reminding me to go back over it, then you will be doing something that is really useful. Question from YourFavoriteNPC (04:21, 18 January 2025)

Hey I'm brand new and have a question. Does being a fan of the thing I want to write an article about count as a conflict of interest?

I made this account when I found out a fairly popular band (BearGhost) did not have a Wikipedia article. I am a fan of their work and wanted to rectify this issue. Being a fan I am fairly knowable on their history and music. But as I was reading the rules of Wikipedia (nerd) I saw that they have a policy against conflicts of interest. I dont want to break the rules or make Wikipedia look bad thats not my goal. I have experience writing informational works and believe I could write a almost perfectly neutral article that would help show off a cool band.

I dont know what Im doing, what do you think? Can I write the article? It wont be my first thing mind you, I will start with Wikipedia's little check list of starter items first. After that though I do want to try and make the article.

TLDR: Is being a fan of a band a conflict of interest large enough that I should not write a article about them? --YourFavoriteNPC (talk) 04:21, 18 January 2025 (UTC)

Hi @YourFavoriteNPC:, welcome to Wikipedia! Being a fan of a band or something else wouldn't be a conflict of interest concern.
Our COI policy applies if you have a personal or working relationship with the band (see WP:EXTERNALREL) but your message you don't need to worry about it. I'd just make sure to keep a neutral point-of-view and follow Wikipedia's other policies as normal, and you're good to go!
Thanks for checking, and if you have any further questions please feel free to ask! Encoded  Talk 💬 19:15, 18 January 2025 (UTC)

Editing

Hi Encoded,

A newbie here. I was thinking of editing a particular page. If I have citations and evidences on a PDF linked to old articles and news paper clippings, how would you recommend me on making these edits? TruthSeekerOX (talk) 06:13, 10 March 2025 (UTC)

@TruthSeekerOX As an editor with a WP:COI editing the article of the company you are hired by, you need to follow the COI editing instructions which Drm310 had linked to in your talkpage. Thanks. ~ JASWE (talk) 00:35, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
Hi @TruthSeekerOX, sorry for taking so long to reply. This page contains information on how to cite particular sources, for the newspaper clippings I believe you can reference the newspaper itself, as for PDFs I'm not too sure, but the help desk should have an answer for you on that one! As JAWSE said as well, please make sure to follow our COI editor policies, you're still welcome to contribute but they must go through the proper channels. Thanks! Hi Encoded,

I'm glad to have you as my mentor. I want to ask if I have to add a reference in the reference section after every edit or there's no need for that?

Thank you, David. --DavidSegunOloye (talk) 20:39, 23 March 2025 (UTC)

Hi @DavidSegunOloye, welcome to Wikipedia! Apologies for the delayed response. You don't need to reference every edit, the guidelines say:
sources are required for material that is challenged or likely to be challenged. If reliable sources cannot be found for challenged material, it is likely to be removed from the article.
Basically, if it's a common known fact typically it does not need a reference, but if you think someone might need to check if it's real it does. For example: you'll need to reference something like "Company X did this to Company Y" but not "Apples grow on trees". There's some more information here: WP:WHYCITE. Anything related to living people must be sourced.

Hello, I would like to add a name to the page titled Jewish Mathematicians. His name is my late husband Haskell Rosenthal. Thank you, Gayle Rosenthal --GaelRos55 (talk) 12:32, 16 April 2025 (UTC)

Hi @GaelRos55, thanks for your message.
To add your late husband to the list we'll need to create a page for him, this means he'll have information about him on the site similarly to other pages (for example Samson Abramsky). Since you've said he was a professor and has written important papers and made important discoveries then I believe that he is a great candidate for a page and addition to the list.
There's a few bits of information we'll need to gather to do this, and if you're OK with a page existing for him I'm happy to get the process started.
Many thanks, Encoded  Talk 💬 16:10, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
Hello, and many thanks for your encouragement and parameters. I was thinking this as well ... that it would be good to dedicate a page to him and his work. His unpapers were donated to the American Math Association, and I'm not quite sure how to obtain a list of his published work. I will consult another professor I know who is retired from UT and also I will consult my sons about this process. I will be in touch as I develop the information.

Hey bro, it's nice to meet you. I've been trying to attach Pomme as a hyperlink thing on an article talking about the sampling disputes on Kanye's music and I can't figure out how to add her without it saying, "this title relates to more than one page" or saying, "(singer)" on the actual published versions. This is what I've been putting in the editing and it doesn't preview what I want it to preview. Sometimes I'm reading other articles and it says things like, "on their debut record" and "debut record" is a hyperlink to the record mentioned. Try to reach back and thank you! --Minatokiji (talk) 15:49, 25 April 2025 (UTC)

Best regards, Minatokiji (talk) 02:07, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
Hi @Minatokiji, you can change or delete any content on the wiki if you believe it is incorrect, if it's not descriptive I'd recommend modifying it to be more descriptive if you can as opposed to deleting it outright, and if it's incoherent I'd recommend replacing it with something else if you can, but deleting it is allowed if you believe that the article would be better off without it or it's incorrect. Question from SreyebTruk (18:54, 5 May 2025)

Hello, Encoded. Thanks for the welcome. My question is on conflict of interest. I submitted a draft of a new article for review, and on the talk page of the draft and in the section where I noted editing changes, I pointed out that I am being paid an hourly rate to prepare this particular article for submission to Wikipedia. Another editor immediately responded with a warning about conflict of interest. I replied to that editor with another detailed explanation of what I had done and why. My question is on the official Conflict of Interest form. I did not file that because it seemed to me that filing it says that someone is employing me to be on Wikipedia, which is not the case. I am a freelance writer and editor, and the musical group that is the subject of my submission paid me an hourly rate to learn Wikipedia's requirements, prepare the material according to those requirements, hunt up the appropriate references, and submit it. Do I need to fill out the COI form and submit it? And does it brand me as someone's paid employee? Thanks for any help. --SreyebTruk (talk) 18:54, 5 May 2025 (UTC)

Hi @SreyebTruk, thanks for sending the question. Wikipedia views employees or freelancers being paid in the same category regarding COIs, so you'll need to disclose this. There's more information about this here: WP:DISCLOSEPAY You can use the template I've attached below, this should be placed on your user page and I would also recommend mentioning in any edit requests or drafts just so that everyone is aware and nobody tries to claim you haven't disclosed this.
{{paid|employer=CLIENT NAME|some=yes}}
You can also add any additional info alongside it:

Thanks, Encoded. I will take care of it.
I have a question on a different topic. I was reading Wikipedia's entry on the 17th Lancers of the British army (just happened there from an external link), and I found a passage that was horribly written and that had some misspellings and typos. When I see something like that, what is the procedure to correct it? SreyebTruk (talk) 23:27, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
If you're being paid to edit the article, you can create an edit request with the changes you'd like to make, otherwise if you're not being paid I believe you can edit the article yourself. As long as you follow WP:PAID you're all good. If you do edit articles that you're not paid for, I highly recommend keeping a list of articles that you are paid for on your user page so that others don't accuse you of COI editing. I've also known people to use a second account for non-COI editing, which you should also disclose on your user page if you decide to do this. Thanks, Encoded  Talk 💬 08:10, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

Question from Zachmanjr (21:15, 9 May 2025)

Can you make a wikipedia page for any real person or is there a minimum threshold of popularity, notoriety, etc? --Zachmanjr (talk) 21:15, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

Hi, there is a minimum threshold of notability, you can see it here: WP:BIO
In short: People are presumed notable if they have received significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject.
Hope this helps, and if you have any questions please feel free to message back. Thanks, Encoded  Talk 💬 16:00, 11 May 2025 (UTC)

Articles for Creation backlog drive

Hello Encoded:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive in June!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 1 month of outstanding reviews from the current 3+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 June 2025 through 30 June 2025.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 3200 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:25, 20 May 2025 (UTC)

Question from Expatcousin (20:56, 20 May 2025)

how do i amend a deadlink --Expatcousin (talk) 20:56, 20 May 2025 (UTC)

Hi, you can use https://web.archive.org to receive an archived version of the dead link (if available), then replace the deadlink with a link to the archived version. If it's a reference, there's an archived link option in the cite tool. Hope this helps, Encoded  Talk 💬 15:55, 21 May 2025 (UTC)

Question from Limjran on San Isidro, Davao del Norte (13:15, 18 May 2025)

Hi, Good eve, I am Limjran from Municipality of San Isidro now officially called as Municipality of Sawata I just would like to appeal on your kind heart to please move the title of the article San Isidro, Davao del Norte to its new name which is Sawata, Davao del Norte. Due to the fact that it could make some trouble in terms of travelling and in terms of economy as well. In accordance to R.A. 11814. Thus, as Sawateño's I am grateful if you would accept my request. Thank you po! --Limjran (talk) 13:15, 18 May 2025 (UTC)

Hi, apologies for not replying sooner, there's currently a discussion underway to move the page so I unfortunately cannot move it until the results of this are available. I'd recommend joining the conversation there and provide some links to sources (e.g. any legislation, news stories, etc) to confirm. Thanks, Encoded  Talk 💬 10:20, 23 May 2025 (UTC)

Question from GrowthAlchemist (02:07, 13 May 2025)

Hello and greetings, Mentor Encoded. Thank you for your time to help me learn and edit Wikipedia pages. I am scheduled to participate in a 4-hour Wikipedia event in Dallas on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. I wanted to create a page before I joined this session. I look forward to your critique and suggestions on how I can continue editing my first Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:GrowthAlchemist/sandbox. Thank you so much. --GrowthAlchemist (talk) 02:07, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

Hi @GrowthAlchemist, sorry for the delay in responding to this message! The page is a good start and the concept is explained well. The pointers I have are mainly based on the style of articles used on Wikipedia. I'd recommend the following:
- Replace bold text designed to be headings with the 'Heading' style in the VisualEditor toolbar.
- External links are typically not in the body of the text, but instead at the end of the article in an 'external links' section, I've noticed your see more section contains external links so renaming that should do the trick. Using bullet points on the links also makes it look tidier. There's a policy around the use of external links available here: WP:EL
- For references, use the Cite tool. I've added the reference list module for you so once they're moved over to the cite tool the list will automatically generate in the correct format.
- Some sections of the article sound like it's promoting the framework, whereas Wikipedia is supposed to be a neutral source of information. For example: achieved a remarkable 16.4 percentage point increase in the accountability system could be changed to achieved a 16.4 percentage point increase in the accountability system. Simple changes like this make the article dramatically more likely to be approved.
I hope this helps, it's a great start and I hope you're able to continue working on it! If you'd like any further advice or feedback, or have any questions, please feel free to message me back! Encoded  Talk 💬 10:19, 16 May 2025 (UTC)
Have I done the recommended changes correctly? GrowthAlchemist (talk) 01:00, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
That's much better! Just don't forget to add references using the cite tool. Thanks, Encoded  Talk 💬 07:25, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
I'm unable to find the "Cite" tool GrowthAlchemist (talk) 05:43, 23 May 2025 (UTC)
The Cite tool on the en-wiki toolbar.
Hi, the cite tool looks like the attached picture (you might need to click on it to enlarge). When you edit the article it should be in the toolbar alongside the buttons for headings/bold/etc. There's also help page here that may be useful. I've added an example reference at the end of your first paragraph, if you still can't find the cite tool you should be able to edit that one and copy the code for it.
With regards to the links in your other message I'm not sure which ones you're referring to, but the external links are all inserted correctly.
Hope this helps, Encoded  Talk 💬 10:34, 23 May 2025 (UTC)
Finally, I think I got it. Thank you so much, Encoded! GrowthAlchemist (talk) 05:08, 26 May 2025 (UTC)
How do I "Submit for Review" to the "Articles for Creation" now? GrowthAlchemist (talk) 05:56, 26 May 2025 (UTC)
I've moved the page to Draft:A–Z for Life and added the template, just click "Submit for review" button at the top of the page. For future reference, you move the page to the draftspace (Move button is in the right hand sidebar) and add the {{draft}} template. Encoded  Talk 💬 21:27, 27 May 2025 (UTC)
I've added three links on the mail body, as examples. Have I done them correctly? GrowthAlchemist (talk) 05:50, 23 May 2025 (UTC)

Question from Wynott (22:34, 20 May 2025)

Hello, Encoded!

Thank you for volunteering to be my mentor. I feel like one of those people who call into talk shows saying "long time listener, first time caller", as I've used Wikipedia a zillion times, but have never even thought about editing it. However, due to several changed circumstances, I'm now interested in doing so. So, thank you in advance for your advice.

Some of the editing is related to my myriad interests in history, literature, sports, etc. Some is related to my work, for which I understand there are a distinct set of rules; i.e. I'll need to declare a "conflict of interest".

I think I can figure out the former fairly quickly, but we'll see if that's true! It's the latter about which I'm more uncertain.

Can you please point me to written guidelines for such editing? Beyond that, do you have any suggestions for how to proceed?

Thank you! --Wynott (talk) 22:34, 20 May 2025 (UTC)

Hey @Wynott, welcome to Wikipedia! I've just placed a welcome message on your talk page with a bunch of links with information and tutorials on it.
The full conflict of interest policy can be found here: WP:COI. With regards to your work if you're editing an article about your work, research, or something else you directly contribute to outside of Wikipedia, or one of your competitors, that would trigger a COI. However, if it's something you work with you can still edit pages about the general idea (For example: A baker can't edit articles about their own bakery or a competitor without following the guidelines, but they can edit an article about bread). I'd recommend reading the above linked page to check!
On articles you do have a COI with I recommend using the edit request wizard to suggest changes to articles and articles for creation if you're making any new ones. You can absolutely still contribute to wikipedia with a conflict of interest, your edits will just need to be reviewed. If you're editing articles that you do not have a COI with, you can edit as normal. You'll need to disclose any conflicts (see WP:COI for info) I recommend keeping a list of pages/topics on your user page that you have a conflict with - this counts as the disclosure.
Other than that, I'd recommend starting off with the Introduction to Wikipedia which teaches you all you need to know about Wikipedia. You could edit an article that you're interested in, or visit the Task Center which contains a list of tasks that need to be done around the site.
Hope this helps, if you have any questions at all please feel free to send me a message! Encoded  Talk 💬 16:15, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
Thank you! Wynott (talk) 17:13, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
Dear Encoded: As previously mentioned, I have a conflict of interest for the first site on which I want to make edits. So, I'm reliant on a Wikipedia volunteer to review and make any changes. In this case, the site is listed as Being of "low importance" and there haven't been any changes made in several years. I assume that means that I might have to wait for awhile until someone notices the Talk request and volunteers to engage. Are there things that can be done to speed up the process? Thanks! Wynott (talk) 21:21, 27 May 2025 (UTC)
Hi @Wynott, you can speed up the request process by adding the {{edit COI}} above your message which adds your request to the queue, I've added the template for you in your recent post. It may still take some time for the edit to be reviewed as we're somewhat short on reviewers at the moment and there's over 200 requests pending. However, without the tag it would likely take much longer! Thanks, Encoded  Talk 💬 21:34, 27 May 2025 (UTC)
Thank you! Wynott (talk) 23:40, 27 May 2025 (UTC)
A related question: For COI-requested edits, is it generally better to make several small separate requests or one request that includes each of the proposed changes? Wynott (talk) 19:15, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
It's usually because editors are more willing to complete many smaller requests as opposed to one big one, tends to get done faster. Especially some new reviewers may find larger requests somewhat daunting. I'm currently going through a 60+ changes mega request that's been sat in the queue completely untouched since January. Question from KoshyTA (05:40, 29 May 2025)

Hello mentor,

I created a page for the artist K. Appukuttan Achary in my user sandbox and moved it to the main area yesterday. I had a couple of queries in this regard:

1) I want to include the artist in the "Painters from Kerala" category. I added the category box to the page but the artist's name does not appear in the list of persons within the category. How do I make it appear in the category box? 2) Once I moved the artist's page to the main area from my user sandbox, the sandbox has a message showing a redirect. If I wanted to use my user sandbox to create another article, how should I go about it?

Thanking you in advance, Yours sincerely, Koshy TA --KoshyTA (talk) 05:40, 29 May 2025 (UTC)

Hi @KoshyTA, when you added the articles they were added like this:
<nowiki>[[Category:Indian male artists]]</nowiki> - if you're using VisualEditor you might not have seen it, but the tags around it make it not work. The way I recommend is as follows:
Adding categories
1. On the "Page options" menu, click the "Categories" item. If the tool is not visible, first search for three horizontal lines , that's where it is.
2. Enter categories into the top box. Make sure to apply settings, then save/publish the page. You might need to click on the category once you've finished typing it for it to be added, it should display below the text box.
Removing redirects
1. On the "Page options" menu, click the "Page Settings" item.
2. Uncheck the checkbox that says "redirect this page to". Make sure to apply settings, then save/publish the page.
You can click on any of these pictures to make them bigger if you need to.
Hope this helps, Encoded  Talk 💬 18:13, 30 May 2025 (UTC)

Hello Mentor! I work in the marketing department for a not-for-profit senior retirement community that is not represented on Wikipedia - I would like to create an article about our community. I've read the conflict of interest article. I'm not sure it that means that I shouldn't be the one to write about it? If not, then who?

Thanks for your consideration! Slidegirl62 --Slidegirl62 (talk) 15:31, 12 June 2025 (UTC)

Hey @Slidegirl62, welcome to Wikipedia! You can create the article yourself but it will have to be reviewed through our Articles for Creation (AfC) process.
There's some useful info here for you: User:Encoded/Drafts, as well as the information if you scroll down to the bottom of that page and enter the article name into the box it'll set up the draft with a menu for AfC within it so you can easily submit it for review. If you have any trouble with this let me know and I can give you a hand!
I'm also both an AfC and COI edit requests reviewer, so I'm happy to help if you have any questions, please feel free to let me know! Thanks, Encoded  Talk 💬 16:12, 12 June 2025 (UTC)
