Just a heads-up, it takes two to edit-war, and even if the hatnote is an improvement, it's best to not keep reverting the IP again and again, as you're technically at your fourth revert already. I'd suggest to wait to see if they reply to us on their talk page, and/or open a section on the article's talk page itself. Good luck! Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 23:12, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

WP:EDITWAR does not apply to reverting vandalism. ... discospinster talk 23:14, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
True, but it doesn't technically counts as vandalism, as they're not removing stuff for purely disruptive purposes but arguing that the hatnote is unnecessary (to quote their edit summary, The game has nothing to do with the subject). For that matter, I don't agree with them and think the hatnote is good, but it is a reasonable position to have, and doesn't fit the exemption of Reverting obvious vandalism—edits that any well-intentioned user would agree constitute vandalism, such as page blanking and adding offensive language. Vandalism for edit-warring purposes is pretty strictly defined, and, if a well-intentioned user like myself can disagree with this characterization, I don't think that it is clear-cut enough for an edit warring exemption. Yes, it is unhelpful to remove the hatnote, but I can (kind of) understand their case and see that they're not doing it to explicitly disrupt the encyclopedia. • For additional information, please consult the Election FAQ.

Meeting info:

All attendees are subject to Wikimedia NYC's Code of Conduct.

Thank you for working to improve Wikipedia.

You said "characters should redirect to the film they are in" and that makes sense, but in the case of Biggs Darklighter the actor's page has more about the character. Maybe we should make an exception?

(i'm also waffling about Darklighter, where the edit history is mostly about Charmed, but that article doesn't mention them anymore.)

Wikipedia:Sexual Aussault by Birju Maharaj Topic

Hi, can you please think once again about this cause I really think this is an irrelevant topic. As, kindly check that there are lack of evidences. How can only a particular thing said by a particular person which lead to rumours and is not even known that these assaults were real or not, be in the page? Since, these particular things were not asked by that person to Birju Maharaj when Maharaj was alive, and were henceforth not given any chance for proper validation, then how can that topic be here in this page? No Government Issues or Cases are also there against Birju Maharaj. Where is the evidence that this person is not making up things or trying to defame Maharaj, as all these are done after Birju Maharaj's death and not when he was alive!

So, please kindly have a look into this matter which has lack of "proper" evidences... Editordcs (talk) 17:23, 15 September 2024 (UTC)

Selassiedunkley

Hi, Disco. I have a couple reasons to be concerned over the behavior of Selassiedunkley, and although I may take it to a noticeboard if it continues, I wanted to discuss it with an admin one-on-one first.

  • I believe Selassie is the subject in question, as their stated name within the two identical Wikipedia articles they created and have linked to elsewhere is 'Selassie Dunkley'. They are a single-purpose editor with a clear lack of understanding of guidelines, including the one on self-promotion.
  • I have reason to believe these articles were specifically self-promotional hoaxes. Selassie states that they were signed to Def Jam Recordings but provides zero evidence for this, and I can find zero evidence on Def Jam's website that they ever signed this person. Def Jam has some of the biggest names in music signed to them, and this leads me to believe that Selassie – either as a prank or as a deliberate lie – stated falsely that they were signed to them. Either way, Def Jam's own website directly contradicts what Selassie is saying in the now-drafted article, and I believe it should be removed as a hoax. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 01:36, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

Glady (surname) page dispute

ATTENTION! Im not sure if you understand how Wikipedia work. This is literally mind boggling. The Glady surname page is specifically written for the surname. That’s why it has “(surname)” after it. It is about the surname, not any individual. Im not sure if you understand this, but there is a separate stand-alone Angel Glady wiki page that is attached to the Glady disambiguating page for anybody to find. Anybody can search for Angel Glady and find the page. This has nothing to do with the Glady surname page. The Glady surname page and the Angel Glady page are separate pages. Angel Glady has a separate independent page. She does not need two. There is no reason to redirect from the surname page. You do not have to continue to hijack the Glady surname page. Both can exist simultaneously. Why doesn’t this compute? 2600:1006:B14D:6BFD:88E8:EA64:1E63:7388 (talk) 04:07, 6 October 2024 (UTC)

Hi discospinster – I hope you are well!

My name is Brad and I am an employee at Brooks Macdonald. I noticed you recently worked on the article removing some uncited content and wanted to ask if you would be able to help me with some very small, factual updates.

The updates reflect a new CEO starting their post as well as the company logo being used. I have shared more details at Talk:Brooks Macdonald, please take a look and let me know what you think.

Thanks for your time and expertise. Bradryan (talk) 14:04, 14 October 2024 (UTC)

Jonatan Habib Engqvist

Hi DS! I saw that you commented on Jonatan Habib Engqvist. I would prefer to edit the article than to have it deleted. Jonatan Habib Engqvist is an important figure in the art world. The page is a translation from Swedish Wikipedia (with some clean-ups and added sources).

There are THREE notable sources from major Swedish news outlets to support the mainstream importance of this figure.
One is NOT behind a paywall, from SVT: https://www.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/jonkoping/jattesmileyn-uppsatt-pa-radhuset SVT is the Swedish equivalent to the UK's BBC. See here: Sveriges Television
In addition, there are two other mainstream sources Svenska Dagbladet and Dagens Nyheter, the two largest Swedish newsoutlets-

In addition, there are only handful of Swedish curators active on the international scene and Jonatan Habib Engqist is one of them!
Thank you. I know it is important with multiple opinions and input from experienced users! Thanks! Matriarch-info (talk) 04:35, 15 October 2024 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Dorothy Lawson (Q18576060) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a recently created redirect from an implausible typo or misnomer, or other unlikely search term.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

A. Quraishi - Sources

Had a question on two sources I found updating the notability of this article on Ammad Quraishi. One source seems to be a blog/newsletter entry by the subject from about two years ago referring to his identity and the precise notability claim. Not sure if it can be referenced. The other source is from a national organization that verifies the claim in an archived link (on archive.org) that has redirect issues. The primary link works, but the entry where it is sublinked is either a dead link or just not loading. Should I add these links and then refer to them on the talk page or in the AfD thread? Or do you recommend an alternative? Seeking guidance, BernieBruh (talk) 04:43, 15 November 2024 (UTC)

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Okay, thanks for letting me know. FifthFive (talk) 22:55, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
WP:WARNVAND does state that users should be warned for each and every instance of vandalism and I've been told by administrators (Swarm) that leaving the templated warnings are a quote "basic expectation" and that it's never ok to not leave a warning. Is this not true? I recall a case where after a revert by Discospinster, an IP re-added their edits as they hadn't any idea of their mistake, causing more work for another editor to again revert the edits, where then I had to revert the revert as the original edit by the IP turned out to be correct in the first place. All of these unnecessary steps could have been avoided by a simple note after the first revert. -- Cosmic6811 🍁 (T · C) 05:24, 21 November 2024 (UTC)

The first sentence of an article does not indicate the subject's ethnicity, it is for nationality (i.e. the country that they are from): "The opening paragraph should usually provide context for that which made the person notable. In most modern-day cases, this will be the country, region, or territory where the person is currently a national or permanent resident; or, if the person is notable mainly for past events, where the person was such when they became notable." So you suggesting me (by discussing these issues) to violate undertakings by Wikimedia given to Indian court of this judge as recorded in the first artycle of english wikipadia taken down by court order ? The "deleted" artycle is still accessible from WMF server so I quote for you from it On 14 October, a bench – comprising justices Manmohan and Tushar Rao Gedela – heard the appeal; they said that Wikipedia's portrayal of ANI was potentially defamatory, and hence, must be defended by the editors in question.[24][27] They also characterized Wikipedia's refusal to divulge the identifying details as "extremely disturbing", and warned that WMF would lose its protection under the Safe Harbor Act shall it choose to defend the allegations of defamation.[26][28][27] The judges further objected to the creation of an English Wikipedia article about the defamation case, alleging interference with "a sub-judice matter" and took particular umbrage at the article mentioning criticism of Chawla's order.[26][29] Later that week, the court passed an order directing all "pages on Wikipedia pertaining to the single judge [Chawla] as well as discussion of the observations of division bench [Manmohan and Gedela]" to be "taken down or deleted within 36 hours".[30][31][32] On 18 October, ANI asked the court to seek contempt proceedings against the WMF, since the 36-hour deadline had not been complied with.[33] As an administrator/sysop you can verify this QUOTE text is accuret and exact, and it said "..all.." pages... You are a senior sysop with many edits, so please canduct per the Universal Code and using terms first and Wp local rules second.. Information icon Hello. Regarding the recent revert you made to Daniel Dubois: you may already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template index/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. They can also be used to give a stern warning to a vandal when they've been previously warned. Not sure why you didn't place one, but I've gone ahead and issued a warning template to the user in question (there was already a note from a previous revert). Cheers. @Deepfriedokra: Is there a rule against using templates on 'regulars' or something? I did notice that their account is 20 years old and they must be quite active, judging by the talk page, but I didn't think it would preclude the use of a template. It's concise and gets the message across. I did consider there might have been a reason or such for it, which is why I added the custom personal message at the end instead of just calling it a day.

I've twice now draftified this article due to the overwhelmingly positive commentary that reads like advertising copy. I placed notices on the user's talk page regarding the issues. Those notices were ignored. Now I think they are about to do the same with Draft:"Beanie" (Chezile song), which is also gushingly positive. Personally, I don't think either should be in mainspace. But, I'm running into brick walls with this user. Suggestions? (courtesty @Anabelle Agosto:) --Hammersoft (talk) 20:25, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

The section about what other periodicals have said about it, or cited it, is not appropriate. If someone said something negative about the magazine, would you add that as well? The list of prominent contributors isn't necessary unless the contributors have their own Wikipedia articles. Content like "The Wild Hunt has continued to evolve into a recognized independent news outlet" is not worded neutrally and adds no factual information. ... discospinster talk 02:59, 19 January 2025 (UTC)

Regarding SDN Dispute

This is regarding latent deletion of history section and references. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software-defined_networking The page is full of partial truth, favoring this source: https://www.cs.princeton.edu/courses/archive/fall13/cos597E/papers/sdnhistory.pdf as the sole truth of history. Recent edit deleted a whole section of history, backed by formal U.S. patent applications that describe SDN, and have many SDN patents derive from them. Arguably these parents are the pivotal point that changed SDN from theory to practice. It's easy to see the list of patent citations = patents that reference these patents to see their importance in SDN innovation. You can also ask chatgpt to read the patent and tell you how it relates to SDN. We must not hide important facts. 85.250.177.182 (talk) 00:19, 27 January 2025 (UTC)

Block of Aenth

This was pretty clearly an involved block as you had reverted their edits three times. Also, they were warned for disruptive editing, then one minute later you warned them that they needed sources to verify their edits, then one minute after that you blocked them as WP:NOTHERE.

As I am sure you are aware, the norm when a new user is edit warring is a short block and thorough explanation of what edit warring is and why it is not tolerated. An indef NOTHERE block seems out of line, that page repeatedly uses phrasing like "long -term" and "extreme disinterest" for a reason. This sort of thing is exactly why we have the involved admin policy. Beeblebrox Beebletalks 22:45, 1 February 2025 (UTC)

Performance of arrangement of beethoven symphony 5

Dear Sir, I understand that my contribution on the covers of Beethoven's fifth symphony raised your concerns in terms of identifying a reliable source. Unfortunately, as I tried to explain, to do so for the arrangement made by Peter Welsh is almost impossible and I will now explain why. I was present at the time the arrangement was performed in 1989 after the fall of the Berlin Wall, they were months of great excitement and lots of celebrations were held. In an attempt to give reason to the cause of a unified Germany also our network of musician and composer decided to organize something. In this context is to be inscribed the performance of the mentioned arrangement made by Peter, who simbolised the union of the German spirit (incarnate by the teremin and the piece) and the old Soviet one (incarnate by the balalaika) . As you can imagine, given the context of the situation, no large amount of sources could be produced, if not in personal diaries; I remember that the only public source of this concert was the concert program, which was distributed to members of the audience. I hope you understand that my intent is to celebrate the good work of an esteemed artist, who deserves respect for his production; it would be a pity that the reputation of a person could be obscured just by an excessive rigidity on the matter of sources policy. I also am to inform you that other voices in the page do not contain sources, so for the same reason should they be redacted? Trusting in your good evaluation, I know a solution can be found. Please I ask you to restore the entry I made, in the name of free knowledge and high esteem we should all have for artists. Waiting for your reply Sincerely Otto Brünner 87.4.238.63 (talk) 23:39, 7 February 2025 (UTC)

The articles are not meant to include every single performance, only the ones that have attracted media attention. ... discospinster talk 01:32, 8 February 2025 (UTC)

The performance did receive media attention, the documents simply weren't digitalised; also consider that we are not talking about a simple perfomance of the piece, but rather abuot a original arrangement. You understand that there is a real word made of people out of the screen. The means of media were different back then. I hope we can clarify the position. So if a very important thing happens, just because it doesn't receive sufficent digitalised media coverage then its value disappears ( and consider that here we are talking about something happened in 1989)? I agree with you that something is notable only when relevant in a society, but how can one reason only in digital terms? People coming together, talking, writing, leaving tangible manufacts, these are also sources of the importance of a phenomenon. We cannot rely exclusevely on one type of source, it wouldn't be fair. What can decide is something is relevant or not? The people, and they do so by talking about it. And already just the fact that we are discussing about it shows the importance that this particulary performance had on a community. In light of this, I cannot see how the entry could cause any harm to the page. Sincerely Otto Brünner

I didn't say it had to be digitised, just that there was media attention. Citations to print sources are valid, as long as they are reliable sources. ... discospinster talk 02:47, 8 February 2025 (UTC)

Well thank you, I will provide a citation that includes a reliable printed source as soon as possible. Sincerely Otto Brünner
