[edit]Wouldn't it be more appropriate for Wikipedian to link to Wikipedia community instead of Wikipedia? Laura240406 (talk) 06:31, 16 January 2025 (UTC)

I haven't specified the "gender" parameter, but this template shows a male symbol (♂) next to my name with the tooltip "male" and puts me in Category:Male Wikipedians. (Edit: I've since changed this; see permalink for reference.) I guess what's happening is it's pulling from the setting "Gender used in messages", but the thing is, that setting is about grammatical gender, not gender proper.
The software uses this value to address you and to mention you to others using the selected grammatical gender option.
In my opinion, my gender is irrelevant to Wikipedia; I only provide my pronouns for convenience/clarity. As well, from what I understand, there are gender-non-conforming people who use masculine/feminine pronouns but don't identify as male/female, so we should try to be inclusive of them.
So, two things to change:
- I shouldn't need to specify the "pronoun" parameter if I've already specified my pronouns in the setting "Gender used in messages"; it should automatically say "he/him"
- The template shouldn't assume "masculine pronouns" means "male". (As a workaround for now, you can specify
gender=
.) The user should need to specify their gender explicitly to get the male/female symbol.- Alternatively, it could still show the symbol but clarify in the tooltip "uses masculine pronouns" or something along those lines.
- Maybe the template could check if the user is already in Category:Male Wikipedians/Category:Female Wikipedians and infer the "gender" parameter in that case.

- The template can't see what categories a page is in, AFAIK. As for assuming pronouns based on gender, see preferred gender pronoun for why that is a poor assumption. If you have an idea about how the template could work better, feel free to change the code in the template's /sandbox page and test it on the testcases page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:11, 20 February 2025 (UTC)

Slightly linked to the edit request above (23 June 2025) which I don't think was actioned in Sandbox, but I thought it'd be really useful to have a section where you could list Projects you're part of? Such as AfC or NPP. I don't know the code for the Sandbox, but I imagine something like..
