Is there an option to make this template use American English
[edit]The template is on my profile but at one point it says "Hobbies, favourites and beliefs", which is correct in both spelling and grammar in British English, but I want to change it to "Hobbies, favorites, and beliefs", since that is correct in American English. - Ok. However, the template doesn't use the Oxford comma after "interests" and I wish it did BombCraft8 (talk) (contributions) 23:36, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- It does now. Primefac (talk) 12:49, 12 November 2024 (UTC)

Description of suggested change: Allow users to add their ORCID Numbers to their userpage. ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID), is a 16-digit code assigned to individual researchers to allow for their work to be found easier, and is used by ~15,000,000 people.
ORCID IDs are 16 digits long separated into four four-digit long sections by hyphens, and are intended to be displayed in the format "https://orcid.org/0000-0000-0000-0000. The final digit of an ORCID ID can be the letter X, but all other digits will be numbers between 0 and 9.
Adding the ability for Wikipedia users to easily display their ORCID IDs on their Userpages would allow for people who use Wikipedia for research purposes to more easily direct people to their work.

- Please don't get too "toxic" on me or be a "MONS†ER", I love kittens and cats and have one at home, a gray Tabby named Fayrah (Fay Fay). She's all grown up now and still has such a kitten face. Take a look on the [test cases] page to see a way that this template can handle such things as ORCID numbers. It uses the
|custom_label=
and|custom_data=
parameters (see documentation). Feel free to erase or alter that section on the test cases page if you want to. I'm sorry but I don't feel comfortable adding parameters to an already many-parameters template, but will add it if you can build a consensus for doing so. Thank you for your edits! P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 01:36, 27 December 2024 (UTC)- that makes sense sorry. also i forgot about my weird mess of a userpage and was super confused when I saw this. I'll definitely look at testcases. Thanks, Tantomile (talk) 03:02, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

I haven't specified the "gender" parameter, but this template shows a male symbol (♂) next to my name with the tooltip "male" and puts me in Category:Male Wikipedians. (Edit: I've since changed this; see permalink for reference.) I guess what's happening is it's pulling from the setting "Gender used in messages", but the thing is, that setting is about grammatical gender, not gender proper.
The software uses this value to address you and to mention you to others using the selected grammatical gender option.
In my opinion, my gender is irrelevant to Wikipedia; I only provide my pronouns for convenience/clarity. As well, from what I understand, there are gender-non-conforming people who use masculine/feminine pronouns but don't identify as male/female, so we should try to be inclusive of them.
So, two things to change:
- I shouldn't need to specify the "pronoun" parameter if I've already specified my pronouns in the setting "Gender used in messages"; it should automatically say "he/him"
- The template shouldn't assume "masculine pronouns" means "male". (As a workaround for now, you can specify
gender=
.) The user should need to specify their gender explicitly to get the male/female symbol.- Alternatively, it could still show the symbol but clarify in the tooltip "uses masculine pronouns" or something along those lines.
- Maybe the template could check if the user is already in Category:Male Wikipedians/Category:Female Wikipedians and infer the "gender" parameter in that case.

- The template can't see what categories a page is in, AFAIK. As for assuming pronouns based on gender, see preferred gender pronoun for why that is a poor assumption. If you have an idea about how the template could work better, feel free to change the code in the template's /sandbox page and test it on the testcases page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:11, 20 February 2025 (UTC)
