New edit filter: Very short translation creation
[edit]Disallow actions that meet the following rule:
!("confirmed" in user_groups) &
(new_size < 30) &
(page_title rlike "/.{2,3}$")
These obviously malicious translations are common, so this filter would disallow those actions. Faster than Thunder (talk) 20:57, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- Why use page_title instead of page_namespace? – Phương Linh (T · C · CA · L · B) 23:31, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- Checking the suffix of the page title is impossible to do with
page_namespace
, and titles that match the regex are [nearly] always translations. I agree with Pppery, filters only need to be hidden if they target extreme cases like LTAs, not drive-by vandals. Faster than Thunder (talk) 05:06, 10 May 2025 (UTC)

- My question to you is similar to one I had last time – what's the point of having a filter set to disallow now that you've posted the conditions in public. Please, email a sysop next time you want a filter implemented. //shb (t • c) 23:57, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- This filter isn't targeting suffisticated filter-dodging LTAs, it's targeting drive-by vandals, so it would be fine for a filter for this to be public IMO. * Pppery * it has begun 00:49, 10 May 2025 (UTC)
- We need to consider that text to be translated in one translation unit is often itself short (sometimes even one-word) so the size of even a legitimate translation of such text would not necessarily be 30 bytes or more but if set to disallow, this filter would stop them. – Svārtava (tɕ) 14:23, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
- Fortunately, this filter will only affect autoconfirmed users (hence
!("confirmed" in user_groups)
), and newcomers and anonymous users are more likely to create bad short translations than more experienced users. Faster than Thunder (talk) 22:23, 11 May 2025 (UTC)- We are also going to have to exclude some East Asian languages using
!equals_to_any(translate_target_language, "ja", "ko", "yue", "zh")
. Codename Noreste (talk · contribs) 02:02, 12 May 2025 (UTC)- Why should we exclude those languages? Faster than Thunder (talk) 05:35, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Faster than Thunder: I had seen that part, and I still wouldn't say it's a good idea to blanket ban all translation edits from IPs and new users which are less than 30 bytes. – Svārtava (tɕ) 05:24, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
- I'm concerning translation creations, not edits to existing translations. Edits to existing translations will be unaffected. Faster than Thunder (talk) 05:36, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
- We still have legit translations that less than 30 bytes, and disallow IPs and new users to create them doesn't look so good. If the filter we talking here is just 'tag' only, I don't think there's a need since we have filter to monitor bad translation. Regards, aqurs 🍧 07:21, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
