Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat

Meta-Wiki has a small active community. When a normal user requires the assistance of an administrator or bureaucrat for some particular task, it is not always easy to find one. This page helps users find one when they need one; asking specific admins directly via their talk pages is one way to elicit a fast response. It is only for assistance required at Meta-Wiki, help for other wikis needs to be requested at those wikis.

A RFC to opt meta-wiki in to the globalsysop set has been opened at Meta:Requests for comment/Allow global sysops on Meta. Interested contributors are invited to comment there. — xaosflux Talk 15:14, 18 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Proposal to add a Abuse Filter Search (Gadget) for ( / to) metawiki?

[edit]

I am currently making a abuse filter search. This should help us and all other projects to better maintains abuse filters and find deprecated variables etc. The search allows you to search in local filters and also global (use optional sitematrix for all active projects) or foreign projects. Since we also have global filters in Metawiki and crosswiki, the projects meet. I suggest add the script as a gadget. What do you think I should add the script as a gadget?

If the script doesn‘t exist yet, we can‘t really decide on „upgrading“ it to a gadget. TenWhile6 17:52, 24 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@TenWhile6 The Script is already on gitlab: [1]. See Screenshot. PS: The script is in English and German + Machinetranslations (French and Spanish). The search has many search functions and a export. 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 (WikiBayerCatHelper) 18:17, 24 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I have used https://search-filters.toolforge.org/ in the past, although I'm not sure if the tool still works given recent updates to AbuseFilters like protected variables @Martin Urbanec? Johannnes89 (talk) 18:18, 24 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
The tool is limited to a few users and shows rather little information, code from private filters does not work with it. My script has the advantage that it uses the API directly in the browser, so you have no oauth restrictions and can also search private filter code (which was also the main reason for my work) and can search everything. the script also immediately displays short code and more information. 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 (WikiBayerCatHelper) 18:34, 24 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Johannnes89 Is that for GAFH/AFM-only? – Phương Linh (T · C · CA · L · B) 12:29, 25 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think you can also use it without those permissions, but obviously only search filters your account can access. Johannnes89 (talk) 16:16, 25 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Johannnes89 search-filters.toolforge.org can only used by users with global permissions. The toolforge tool from Martin check "globaluserinfo" per api. (See here). All other user become only see "permission_denied.html" 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 (WikiBayerCatHelper) 16:44, 25 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Johannnes89 The tool should still work, although I need to double check it still has access to IP-provided private filters. I'll double check and let you know. Martin Urbanec (talk) 16:10, 25 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Before considering making a gadget, making a user script is usually the first step. When that is done let's take a look, especially if this is going to be opt-in. — xaosflux Talk 18:27, 24 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@WikiBayer Does this script return results that include private filters on the wiki where I have permission to view and edit them? – Phương Linh (T · C · CA · L · B) 12:36, 25 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Hide on Rosé Yes you can see and search in all filters and it even shows whether the filter is public or private. See for example the Screenshot on Commons ("Öffentlich" is german public). For obvious reasons, I have not included a screenshot of a pirvate filter, but this looks exactly the same except that it says "Private" instead of "Public". 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 (WikiBayerCatHelper) 14:30, 25 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I noticed some bugs about this script:
  • Every time I use it, it logs me out every time.
  • When on "Edit" or "View history", the script loads on these pages where it should not load. It should only load on "Read".
  • Can its appearance be changed for dark mode? It has poor contrast.
Codename Noreste (talk · contribs) 05:18, 26 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Codename Noreste""Edit" or "View histor" the Script overide fill page. The Page as no content. Why need you edit this page? The Darkmode is not supported.
"Every time I use it, it logs me out every time."
I can't understand it. I had tested the script and don't know what could trigger it. 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 (WikiBayerCatHelper) 09:54, 26 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@WikiBayer I assume what CN meant is that there's no need to load the script when page action == "edit/history". – Phương Linh (T · C · CA · L · B) 09:06, 27 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Only OAuth administrators can work on this, so I'm pinging @DerHexer:. – Phương Linh (T · C · CA · L · B) 09:11, 27 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Isn't such request usually placed at Steward_requests/Miscellaneous? Stang 09:12, 27 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Stang I'm not really sure, only two stewards are OAuth admins. – Phương Linh (T · C · CA · L · B) 09:15, 27 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Requesting closure of vague RFC

[edit]

Could a meta administrator please review Requests for comment/I feel disgusted by Wikimedia and Wikipedia and (re)close it if appropriate? The complaint made in the RFC does not clearly identify any actionable issue. It was previously closed by SHB2000 but was subsequently reopened out of process by the creator. Omphalographer (talk) 23:00, 27 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

I'll leave it to another sysop this time. //shb (tc) 23:34, 27 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
