New private AbuseFilter: LTA 404
[edit]Recently, some LTAs made bad edits to pages related to me, including my talk page itself. This filter would block users who make actions that match the following rule:
bad := "\{\{ *edit protected*\}\}|\d+:\d\d|\d{5,}";
(added_lines rlike bad) && (added_lines.length - removed.lines.length < 30) & !("confirmed" in user_groups)
Faster than Thunder (talk) 01:50, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- I do not see a valid reason for that. Can you please show some edits? – Phương Linh (T · C · CA · L · B) 03:43, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- You reverted some LTA edits to Wikihavior and my talk page, and I warned User:User talk:103.239.6.100 for adding bad translations, which this filter would cover. Faster than Thunder (talk) 05:16, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- A few bad edits IMO isn't a valid reason to justify a filter. //shb (t • c) 05:18, 8 May 2025 (UTC)

- Also not sure what the point of a "private" abuse filter is when you've pasted the conditions in public. //shb (t • c) 04:44, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
Not done per SHB. Also if you want a sysop to set up private filter for you, please, send it via wikimail. – Phương Linh (T · C · CA · L · B) 05:58, 8 May 2025 (UTC)

Question
[edit]Where can a user request rights that allow them to create and edit abuse filters on this wiki? Faster than Thunder (talk) 01:58, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- If you think you can be trusted enough to handle abuse filters, you may apply for Meta sysop. If you are trusted, your request will likely pass; if you aren't, then it will likely fail. But given your track record, please don't go applying for Meta sysop because I can guarantee it's not going to end well for you. //shb (t • c) 02:01, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- Meta unfortunately doesn't have the sheer userbase of Wikipedia, so individual rights of the admin toolset cannot be given individually. Anyways, I've learned my lesson from over 1,000 days ago: Don't edit for power. Faster than Thunder (talk) 02:07, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- Yes...and if you think you're trusted enough to edit abuse filters, WM:RFA for sysop does exist. //shb (t • c) 02:09, 8 May 2025 (UTC)

- I request an evaluation of the situation involving the user page initially created on ptwiki and later deleted for violating the local user page policy.
- After the deletion, the page was recreated with the same content as a global user page, apparently to circumvent the decision and make the page reappear on ptwiki, the only project where the user is active. This practice contradicts part of the global user page policy, according to GUP#Content, which states that the content of the global user page should not be considered inappropriate in the projects where it is displayed. Ninja Spmc (talk) 02:36, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- I have requested a speedy deletion and sysop has removed it, the problem no longer exists. ~~Sid~~ 05:45, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

I feel like the best action taken by this filter would be to disallow the action, since most edits caught by this filter are actually malicious enough to be disallowed completely. Faster than Thunder (talk) 19:34, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Faster than Thunder: Please check carefully, there are so many false positives from this filter and they are not problematic. Thanks for your passion but I personally believe that you need to observe and learn more about filters before suggesting creations or changes to filter, for example at the section above, you did not demonstrate that you are familiar with filters. Competence is required. aqurs 🍧 20:35, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Faster than Thunder: This is
not done, given the number of false positives. Please note that abuse filters are heavily monitored by existing sysops - and I think if we could prevent problematic translations that easily, we would!
- @Aqurs1: Please consider the tone of your response. It is strongly discouraged to cite w:en:WP:CIR, as it is inferring an editor is incompetent, which is not necessary or likely true here over two relatively unconsequential mistakes. --Ferien (talk) 20:44, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

New edit filter: Very short translation creation
[edit]Disallow actions that meet the following rule:
!("confirmed" in user_groups) &
(new_size < 30) &
(page_title rlike "/.{2,3}$")
These obviously malicious translations are common, so this filter would disallow those actions. Faster than Thunder (talk) 20:57, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- Why use page_title instead of namespace? – Phương Linh (T · C · CA · L · B) 23:31, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
