My original artwork file is being blocked by automated filter
[edit]Hello. I am the author of the uploaded artwork file "Horizonte difuso.jpg". An automated filter is blocking my edits when I try to fix the file information.
This is an original painting and I would like help adjusting the description so it follows Commons policies.
Thank you. User: LuisaViggiano Maria Luisa Viggiano (talk) 19:17, 10 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hello and welcome @Maria Luisa Viggiano, your edits were blocked by the filter because you were trying to edit the section headings. Please avoid changing the section headings (e.g.
=={{int:filedesc}}==) or the templates (e.g.{{own}}) to plain English, these templates are there for translation reasons. Thank you. Tvpuppy (talk) 20:14, 10 December 2025 (UTC)- Thank you for the clarification.
- I understand now that the filter was triggered by editing section headings and templates. I will avoid changing the section headings and translation templates, and only adjust the file description content to comply with Commons policies.
- Thanks again for your help. ~2025-41458-40 (talk) 14:56, 18 December 2025 (UTC)

I have already made minor edits to the current text I didn't understand how to upload a photo of myself. Fschapiniii (talk) 00:09, 12 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Fschapiniii: this is not wikipedia, this is Wikimedia Commons. For matters relating to that article in the English-language Wikipedia, you can post at en:Talk:F. Stuart Chapin III. You should not be directly editing the article about yourself: see en:WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY and en:WP:COI.
- As for uploading a photo, yes, Commons is the place to do that, but we need the permission of the copyright-holder which, except, for selfies, will almost never be the subject of the photo. If you have a self-taken photo to upload, them just start at COM:First steps, but if it was taken by someone else you will want to read COM:THIRD, because otherwise there is close to 100% chance it will end up deleted.
- Thanks for trying to help out, and I know it can be tricky to plunge into an unfamiliar environment and try to make changes, even if they are in an article about yourself. - Jmabel ! talk 06:15, 12 December 2025 (UTC)

I Am Queen Mary (statue)
[edit]The article for this statue does not include a photo of it. (en:I Am Queen Mary (statue) )
The statue was placed in public, and later damaged and taken out of public view.
I just found that I took a couple of photos while it was exhibited, shortly before it was damaged. The photo is not very high resolution (and could be reduced), and since the article is about the work I thought it would be an acceptable use, but given that it's a modern art piece from a living artist who surely holds the rights, I wanted to check first.
Would a low-resolution image of the sculpture be acceptable? Mzedp (talk) 21:53, 13 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Mzedp: Thank you for your interest in uploading a photo of that statue! Unfortunately, Denmark does not have freedom of panorama for publicly displayed artworks, so we cannot host a photo of that statue here on Commons as the underlying statue has copyright protection. However, you can upload the photo to the English Wikipedia under their non-free content policy, which allows the English Wikipedia to host low-resolution images of copyrighted works in specific cases, such as to identify an artwork on the artwork's article. Note, the image should be no more than ~100,000 pixels total in size (width x height). Also note, you need to be autoconfirmed on the English Wikipedia in order to upload photos, so you will have to make 3 more edits (for a total of 10) before you are able to upload photos. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 00:24, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Mzedp If you want to upload on en-WP per above, go to WP:FUW and pick Upload a non-free file. Also, you don't have to bother with the size, a bot will take care of that eventually. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:37, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you both, I've uploaded the file to English Wikipedia as recommended. Mzedp (talk) 18:06, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
Uploading a public figure
[edit]So I've seen a lot of public figures such as Taylor Swift for example having public photos I could easily find on the internet in seconds, even articles not as popular as idk the actual Taylor swift page, I need to put a photo of a couple, and I can't go to them and take a picture of them, I would like to know more about these rules. Gfroi (talk) 05:29, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Gfroi: if you didn't take the photograph, the photograph needs to be explicitly under a free license to be hosted here. Please read COM:L. Abzeronow (talk) 05:44, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
- Alright

File description discrepancy
[edit]The {{int:filedesc}} and {{int:license-header}} infomation for File:You Can't Lay Down Your Memory by Tejo Remy.jpg and the cropped version (File:You Can't Lay Down Your Memory by Tejo Remy (cropped).jpg) is nearly identical, yet the latter displays "Please edit this file's description and provide a source" notice (due to "lacking" source and author information). Any guidance on how to resolve this would be appreciated. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 12:40, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Cl3phact0: Your upload of the first file with flickypedia inserted information in the structured data (mirrored by default in the description page), but your upload of the second file with CropTool did not. Yoiu can add manually the essential information (description, date, source, author) directly in the information template in the description page. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:32, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you. Both files appear to contain the information already (compare original and cropped versions). I was hoping to find a less error prone method than re-entering the data manually. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 15:24, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
- The manual addition of
|author =and|source =information in this edit resolves the issue. Thank you, Jmabel. I've been able reproduce this result in other files too, however, if there is also an automated method for achieving this (something like User:Emijrpbot or User:BotMultichillT), I would be interested in learning how to invoke that tool as well. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 11:30, 18 December 2025 (UTC)

Request for duplicate image merge
[edit]Hi
I'm helping the UN share images on Commons and I've realised that I've uploaded one of their images twice.
- File:Palestine refugees enforced to flee Hamad quarter in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, after receiving an evacuation warning from Israeli army.jpg
- File:Palestine refugees enforced to flee Hamad quarter in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, after receiving an evacuation warning from Israeli army 5.jpg
The first image already has the VRT permission done and is widely used on Wikipedia, can I request the second one is deleted?
Thanks very much
John Cummings (talk) 09:38, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- Sorry I didn't mention this earlier, but I tagged it as {{Duplicate}} which will tag it for speedy deletion. Looks like an administrator has taken care of it and deleted the file. HyperAnd (talk) 20:57, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
Request: Upload SANHA logo
[edit]Please upload the official logo of the South African National Halaal Authority (SANHA) under non-free fair use for use in the SANHA article.
- **File name**: SANHA_logo.png
- **Source**: https://sanha.org.za
- **Author**: South African National Halaal Authority (SANHA)
- **License**: Non-free logo used under fair use
- **Fair use rationale**: This logo is used to identify the South African National Halaal Authority (SANHA), a notable organization with a dedicated Wikipedia article. Its inclusion serves purely for informational and identification purposes. The image is not used for commercial purposes and does not detract from the original market value. No free equivalent exists that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose.
I am the editor of both the English and Arabic SANHA pages and will insert the logo appropriately once uploaded. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mitwaly (talk • contribs) 09:51, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Mitwaly: Under no circumstances does Commons accept files on a non-free fair use basis. If something on this site suggested that this is possible, could you please point to it so that it can be corrected?
- Several Wikipedias, including the English-language Wikipedia, do accept files on this basis, but that is entirely a matter within that Wikipedia and does not involve Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 21:40, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
Batch upload audio files
[edit]Hello! I have about 6000 audio files that I want to upload to Commons. What would be the most efficient way to do that? It should also be mentioned, that the files are .wav, but they need to be converted to .ogg; also, the names of all of the audio files need to be changed. That means I need to go through them manually anyway, but it would be greatly appreciated, if anybody can advise me on how to do that efficiently. Joonas07 (talk) 15:20, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- There's a freeware (kind of en:Nagware, but not really annoying) for Windows called "Advanced renamer" (advancedrenamer.com) that could serve you well in renaming your files locally. I'm using the slightly older version 3.88, as the GUI there feels the most intuitive. Converting could be done by the en:VLC player, but there's a plethora of other software for such tasks too.
- When you've finished preparing the files: the standard upload wizard supports batch uploads, but I think that you'll have to do smaller batches (with a double digit number of files only) as descriptions and categories are to be set manually. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 15:58, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- So how does this work exactly? I'll convert them to .ogg using VLC player, then I need to somehow rename them using Advanced renamer, do I need to know how to code or how does the renaming work? Then when I'm done, I'll upload them e.g. 99 at a time using the wizard, what does that look like process-wise?
- Another issue is that of categories. While all of the files belong to the category "Estonian pronunciation" (they are pronunciation audio files), they should be sorted according to the first letter of the word, so for example the file Et-udu.ogg should be categorised as [[Category:Estonian pronunciation|U]]. Is there any way to do that without clicking through 6000 links? Joonas07 (talk) 17:35, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- The Advanced renamer is a GUI program. While it does support "coding" with en:regular expressions (RegEx), you don't need to know this to use it. There are user guides, for version 4 and for version 3. You can get a first visual impression of the interface in them.
- I don't really understand your Commons:Upload Wizard question with "what does that look like process-wise?" - didn't you already contributed files? In any case, that page may provide some guidance.
- About categorisation: I guess that you could do stuff with the Visual File Change (VFC) tool. It's also supporting RegEx, but that's beyond my abilities to code. But it'll certainly be helpful if your filenames can follow a strict pattern so that a simple character count would find this first letter of the word, or if a unique symbol (like a hyphen) marks that letter. Using a temporary user category (like Category:User Joonas07 WIP Estonian pronounciation) may also be helpful for automating the categorisation through VFC. I hope that other people may join in in advising you for that task (if you're using the "MarkAdmin" gadget: look for Interface Admins [denoted with an (IA) after their nick], such people are often more knowledgeable about RegEx than random Wikimedians). Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 18:21, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- I have only uploaded files one at a time using the upload wizard, what I meant by that question was in what way is the process different, do I get to add the description, source, time, etc. to the files one at a time or is it possible to input one source and time which applies to all the files?
- Fortunately, it's pretty straight forward to identify the first letter of the word and categorise it accordingly, I think that's doable using RegEx, but, like you, I have next to no skills in that. Could somebody with more experience run me through how would I go about doing this? Joonas07 (talk) 18:51, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Joonas07: Several possibilities here besides what Grand-Duc mentioned, but let me ask you a question before I suggest anything specific: is this from a PC (as against, for example, a tablet) and what operating system are you running? - Jmabel ! talk 21:49, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- PC and Windows 10. Joonas07 (talk) 21:54, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Joonas07: If the renaming follows a pattern, then you can do it with PowerRename, part of the free Microsoft PowerTools suite. I don't use the rest of the suite much, but I use that one a lot. You'll probably do best if your step 1 is to separate out files that need to be handled differently into different folders.
- As for the type conversion,
ffmpegis a free command-line utility that does this well. Pretty sure you can do it in a batch, picking up all the files that follow some pattern (originally a Unix utility, and they pretty much all do that). - Once you've done that, it's a matter of doing a mass upload. I can't say we currently have great tools for that; to the best of my knowledge Commons:Pattypan is the best choice in terms of capabilities and stability, but someone who does this sort of thing themselves may know more than I do. - 00:13, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Could you give me a step-by-step guide using everything you and Grand-Duc have mentioned so far? Joonas07 (talk) 08:44, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
- No, I could not. If you want to find a mentor, I suggest approaching people who have already done similar tasks. - Jmabel ! talk 19:31, 18 December 2025 (UTC)

¿Dónde aparece mi solicitud de desbloqueo?

- @Nicodemutti: When an administrator responds to your unblock request, they replace the unblock template you used with a different one that will display their response.
- However, I don't see where you were ever blocked here. I do see that you are blocked on Spanish Wikipedia. To get that block removed, you need to make the request there. -- Auntof6 (talk) 20:12, 17 December 2025 (UTC)

- ¡Gracias! Nicodemutti (talk) 20:26, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Nicodemutti: I can only speak for what it would look like here on Commons. It might be different on Spanish Wikipedia.
- Here, if an unblock request is granted, the unblock template on the user's talk page will be replaced with a template that looks like the example on Template:Unblock granted where it says "Unblock request granted". If a request is declined, it will look like the example on Template:Unblock declined, where it says "Unblock request declined". In either case, the user's original reason for unblocking and the admin's reason for their decision will appear. You can see English-language examples of what that would look like on this old version of the Commons sandbox.
- I'm sorry my Spanish isn't good enough to explain this in that language. I hope this helps. -- Auntof6 (talk) 20:37, 17 December 2025 (UTC)

Is Pointcrows logo Copyrighted?
[edit]Is it? Im not sure, Im trying to add it to his wiki Page YorkEditorial45 (talk) 22:35, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- @YorkEditorial45: Assuming you are asking about something on line some place, please provide a link. - Jmabel ! talk 00:19, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
- [1] YorkEditorial45 (talk) 19:45, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
- @YorkEditorial45: Thanks for adding a link; unfortunately, though, that's a direct link to the logo itself and there's no real way to tell how whether the image has been released under a copyright license acceptable for Commons or anything else about the logo's en:provenance. Are you able to provide a different link showing where and how the logo is being used online? Without any more information to work with, this logo looks more than creative enough to be considered eligible for copyright protection under US copyright law and that means it really shouldn't be uploaded to Commons unless it can be verified that it has been released by its copyright holder, who's most likely the logo's creator/designer, that's free enough for Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 20:50, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
- It would certainly be copyrightable unless we could demonstrate that it was created entirely by AI (in which case it would be {{PD-algorithm}}. It's obviously new enough that if it can be copyrighted than it is copyrighted. We could not have it on Commons unless either we can prove that or its copyright-holder offers a free license. - Jmabel ! talk 20:57, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hi again YorkEditorial45. FWIW, it looks like you're asking about the logo for en:PointCrow, right? The same logo can be found here on their YouTube channel, but there's no indication (at least not one that I can find) that PointCrow has released the logo under anything other than a standard YouTube license. Standard YouTube licenses aren't free enough (i.e., they place too many restrictions on re-use) for Commons' purposes; so, this logo shouldn't be uploaded without also providing some way of verifying PointCrow's COM:CONSENT: see COM:THIRD for more information on that. Now, having said all that, it's possible the en:wordmark greenish-yellow logo at the top of PointCrow's YouTube page could be uploaded to Commons because logos consisting of only text are typically considered to be too simple to be eligible for copyright protection. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:02, 18 December 2025 (UTC)

- Jmabel ! talk 00:33, 18 December 2025 (UTC)

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, whose agency oversees the Coast Guard, said on social media that the latest changes were made so no one can “misrepresent” the branch's position.
[edit]“The pages of superseded and outdated policy will be completely removed from the record so no press outlet, entity or elected official may misrepresent the Coast Guard to politicize their policies and lie about their position on divisive and hate symbols,”
The move appears to cap off back-and-forth revisions to Coast Guard policy on swastikas, nooses and other hate symbols, which has sparked an uproar. The Department of Homeland Security has said there “was never a ‘downgrade’” in policy language.
Noem's announcement came a day after Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen of Nevada said she was holding up the nomination of Adm. Kevin Lunday for Coast Guard commandant because leadership appeared to have “backtracked” on a commitment that swastikas and nooses are considered hate symbols and prohibited from display.
Rosen said Thursday on social media that she was lifting the hold and looked forward to working with Lunday to continue strengthening anti-harassment policy at the Coast Guard.
“While I continue to have reservations about the process by which this happened and the confusion created by leadership at the Department of Homeland Security, I am pleased to see that the policy now directly refers to stronger language against swastikas and nooses,” she said. License for LBJ Library photos
[edit]In June 2025, I uploaded a photo from LBJ Library Flickr and trusted that the {{PDM}} tag was correct, but user @A1Cafel changed the tag to {{PD-USgov}}. And so when I again uploaded a photo from there, I applied the USgov tag, but then user @0x0a changed it to the {{PD-author-FlickrPDM}}? Which template am I supposed to use when uploading photos from this account? – Howardcorn33 (💬) 23:41, 19 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Howardcorn33 Hi, either is OK for a work created LBJ Library employee as the LBJ Library is part of the National Archives and Records Administration. I changed {{PD-USgov}} to another template because the former would categorize any files into the Category:PD US Government, which is very crowded (we always avoid too many files in a super category) and we have no {{PD-USGov-NARA-LBJ Library}} template currently. 0x0a (talk) 17:27, 24 December 2025 (UTC)
Help for newbie
[edit]Hi,
Where can I get help to do everything right in Wikimedia? JoeMiami (talk) 13:55, 20 December 2025 (UTC)
- Consider going thru the introduction at Commons:First steps. – Howardcorn33 (💬) 14:37, 20 December 2025 (UTC)
- @JoeMiami: You are unlikely to suddenly be able to do everything right. There are tasks here that have a long learning curve (e.g. designing a category hierarchy; correctly handling materials that raise complicated copyright issues; writing bots). What sort of things do you want to do here? That will help someone aim you at the most useful documentation for what you want to do. - Jmabel ! talk 20:32, 20 December 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, I just want to a information of a person that was very important in Venezuela, that it. JoeMiami (talk) 21:45, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
- @JoeMiami: How you worded your response looks like you're searching for biographical information. That kind of information is not within the purview of that site here, Commons. You should rather look for a Wikipedia edition in a language that you're comfortable with. Personalities, celebrities and historical facts are encyclopaedic in their nature, so fitting for Wikipedia. Here, you're looking at a media repository (for images, videos and other graphical material).
- Now, I'm guessing what could be behind "a person that was very important in Venezuela" - you may want to read about en:María Corina Machado, en:Nobel Prize, en:Nicolás Maduro or perhaps en:Donald Trump? Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 09:41, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, @Grand-Duc. I’m familiar with María Corina Machado. I don’t like writing about politics—it’s not my thing. What I don’t understand is why most of the responses I’ve received are so negative. I’m talking about art. This is an example of what I’m aiming to do: Jerry Saltz – Wikipedia JoeMiami (talk) 00:26, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- @JoeMiami: I think the reason you are not getting the answers you want is that so far you haven't asked a very clear question. Is there something you are trying to do here on Wikimedia Commons (find a file? upload a media file? edit the description of a media file? categorize a file?)? If so could you be more specific about what you want help with? Or are you asking a question about either the English- or Spanish-language Wikipedia, in which case you should as on their respective help desks; again, the more specific the question, the more likely you can get a good answer. - Jmabel ! talk 04:21, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Grand-Duc Thanks it help a lot. JoeMiami (talk) 21:23, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Grand-Duc Thanks for your help — yes, I am trying to be more specific. What I want to do is a biographical article, similar to what was done with the Jerry Saltz – Wikipedia: in English about Eduardo Planchart Licea, who was an art historian and art critic. JoeMiami (talk) 21:41, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- @JoeMiami: that sounds like it is entirely a question about the English-language Wikipedia. You might start at en:Help:Your first article. - Jmabel ! talk 01:25, 24 December 2025 (UTC)

intermittent problems with displaying an image on commons
[edit]I just uploaded File:Historical US personal income tax-annotated.svg and found that the default display shows only the top ~40% of the image. If I click on it, I see the full image. What do you suggest I do to fix this?
p.s. I created this by downloading File:Historical Income Tax Rates and brackets.png, modifying that image in R and then saving it as *.svg. That process is documented in detail in The Media, the Great Depression, and our future/Companion R Markdown vignette.

Translation of File:Soran Emirate.jpg
[edit]like the header says ive translated a file into another, how can i upload it? بلباسپور (talk) 20:43, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Average kurd: Meaning you have translated the labels? When uploading, indicate that File:Soran Emirate.jpg is your source; because that is CC-0 it doesn't really put any limitations on what you can do with it, so other than acknowledging it, there isn't anything here very different from creating a file from scratch. I would note though: that file does not note where it got the outline map from, which could be a problem; also, JPEG is not a great format for maps (SVG is best, probably followed by PNG); and that file cites no sources for the borders it shows. So you may be building onto a house of cards. - Jmabel ! talk 02:53, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
- Yes i meant i translated the labels, it's better for me to leave it then. Anyways, thanks for the reply. بلباسپور (talk) 07:09, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
Inquiry regarding the deletion of File:বিডিআর কল্যাণ পরিষদ, গোপালগঞ্জ.jpg
[edit]Hello,
I noticed that my uploaded file File:বিডিআর কল্যাণ পরিষদ, গোপালগঞ্জ.jpg has been deleted citing 'Complex logo or insignia above ToO' and 'Copyright violation' as the reasons.
I would like to ask a few clarifying questions:
Since it is marked as a copyright violation, could you please specify the source or website from which this image is believed to have been copied?
Why is this logo considered to be 'above the Threshold of Originality (ToO)'?
If I want to use this institutional insignia, what specific documentation or permission (VRT) is required to prove its copyright status?
@Timtrent @Ziv BDR Welfare Council Gopalganj 1 (talk) 06:36, 22 December 2025 (UTC)

- Please familiarize yourself with COM:TOO. If you are the actual copyright holder, please send a ticket to COM:VRT to verify yourself. Regards, זיו「Ziv」 • For love letters and other notes 07:00, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Ziv Please read and answer my previous question completely. BDR Welfare Council Gopalganj 1 (talk) 10:20, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
- Your file is largely identical to File:Bangladesh Rifles monogram.png and is a copy of it, apart from the additional text you apparently added. However, the added text has a 3D effect and is therefore no longer a simple text logo. Furthermore, a source citation (derivative work) is missing on the file, and the license is also incorrect. If you believe the logo was mistakenly deleted by us, please submit a undelete request to COM:UNDEL. Don't forget to sign your post. - @Ziv Thank you for your response. However, I have examined the link to 'File:Bangladesh Rifles monogram.png' and I believe that my uploaded image is not identical to that monogram. My image contains unique design elements and features specifically related to the 'BDR Welfare Council' that do not entirely match the image in the link.
- Regarding this, I have a few questions:
- Could you please specify which exact parts of these two images you consider to be identical?
- If I cite the source as a 'derivative work' and update the license accordingly, would the file be considered acceptable?
- You mentioned a '3D effect'; what specific modifications are required to simplify the text and ensure it meets the necessary standards?

Accessibility tracking categories
[edit]Are there any tracking categories for accessibility issues, e.g. images missing alt text? Rosaece ♡ talk ♡ contribs 14:52, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Rosaece: a partial answer. Because Commons is a media repository, we don't make much use of ALT text: the descriptions and captions (and, to a lesser extent, categories and depicts) generally serve that purpose. Galleries usually have explicit captioning of images (where they don't, they should); ditto for "thumb". For the latter two, I could imagine tracking those that don't, but at present we haven't done that. Do you have somewhere else in mind that you would expect ALT text?
- There is a ton under Category:Maintenance categories; I doubt any one person knows their way around it all. We do have Category:Files missing SDC depicts and its subcats, but I'm not sure how populated these really are. - Jmabel ! talk 19:50, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for answering. Do you know of any categories for files missing captions? I skimmed through the maintenance categories and couldn't find one. Rosaece ♡ talk ♡ contribs 22:14, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- No, but probably less than half of the files on Commons have a caption in any language. You could start with almost any topic (and language) that you know moderately well and start going through the files writing captions. I suspect almost all categories would be "target-rich environments," but if you happen on one that isn't, pick something else. - Jmabel ! talk 01:29, 24 December 2025 (UTC)

Location of FI0010549.jpg
[edit]In this edit at Wikipedia, User:Marsulta removed File:FI0010549.jpg from w:Milford, Iowa, claiming that the image is from Milford, Pennsylvania. Perhaps the file description needs to be updated, or if it cannot be verified, deleted, as no article now uses it. There are a number of pictures of the Sawkill Creek in Milford on hiking websites, but it is hard to match up FI0010549.jpg with those images due to angles they were taken, but it certainly seems possible it is from the Sawkill Falls. More persuasive to me, was looking at maps of Milford IA, where the only nearby river is the w:Little Sioux River, and according to one site, it is "a classic prairie river, characterized by meandering, indicating a low gradient (slope) over its course" (e.g., File:Little Sioux River.jpg). This is not a proof, of course, but indicative. Another indication is that Milford, IA is in Dickinson County and this List of Waterfalls in Iowa doesn't list a waterfall in Dickinson County. Mathglot (talk) 20:36, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
- Certainly none of this is reason for deletion. We have plenty of photos on Commons depicting unknown locations. - Jmabel ! talk 20:56, 23 December 2025 (UTC)

[edit]Para que una obra mantenga su integridad frente a tergiversaciones y pueda servir como referencia colectiva, es fundamental definir con claridad su propósito, principios y límites de interpretación. Hey, there's too much black around this photo, how do I get it to zoom in more so that the black isn't shown on there? Wikieditor662 (talk) 20:51, 25 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Wikieditor662: Sounds like you want to crop, not zoom. Depending what you want it for, you could use CropTool to create a version on Commons that with the margins cropped out (PLEASE, though, do not overwrite if you do this: save to a different filename like File:Beethoven 5th Symphony Holograph manuscript (margins removed).jpg). Or, if you just want it on one of the Wikpedias displaying without the margins, you could use {{CSS image crop}}. For example:
{{CSS image crop |Image=Beethoven 5th Symphony Holograph manuscript.jpg |bSize=400 |cWidth=372 |cHeight=270 |oTop=8 |oLeft=13 }}
- Jmabel ! talk 01:07, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you! But why not override? Wikieditor662 (talk) 03:33, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Wikieditor662: I assume that by "override" you mean "overwrite". Please read COM:OVERWRITE: it is pretty rare that it is correct to overwrite a Commons image that you did not upload yourself. In the case of this document, someone might want a version that clearly shows the edges of the paper and lets them see just what the document looks like. A "clean" crop loses that. - Jmabel ! talk 05:28, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
- I did upload this myself, but I suppose that this version can still stay... why would someone want to see the corners though? Wikieditor662 (talk) 06:05, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
- Also, how do I crop it onto the current version which already has a description and thumb? [[File:Beethoven 5th Symphony Holograph manuscript.jpg|thumb||1807 [[Holograph manuscript]] of this piece.]] Wikieditor662 (talk) 03:37, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
- You still haven't said where you want to use this. If (as I take it from this last question) you are using this within a WMF sister project and you are not particularly strong on complex wiki markup, the simplest approach would be to use CropTool (linked above), save to a distinct filename, and use that rather than the current file in the project where you want to use it. If you are doing something else, please be more specific about what you want to do, and on what site. - Jmabel ! talk 05:28, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
- Ah, sorry, I want to use it on Wikipedia, I thought it would be clear as it's the most popular one, I suppose there were more of the wikis that are useful than I thought... Wikieditor662 (talk) 06:04, 26 December 2025 (UTC)

Can this be considered Public Domain
[edit]Hi,
I wanted to ask if this work can be considered Public Domain? I'm interested in a snippet of the title page for the book's article on the English Wikipedia, The Natives Of Mailu.
The book was first published in 1915, but this uploaded work was republished in 1988. The original author Bronisław Malinowski died in 1942. You can read the article for clearer details. Kingsacrificer (talk) 10:07, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
