This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Boxing. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
- Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Boxing|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
- Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
- You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Boxing. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
- Further information
- For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.
This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Sports.

- Comment - Similar to WP:Articles for deletion/David Gillow, one of the cited sources seems to be a picture of a newspaper, but from a Facebook page. We have yet to exactly decipher where the newspaper came from. Until then, per WP:V, I can't count it since we don't know what newspaper this is about. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 21:10, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- Keep. Incredibly obvious notability. We have SIGCOV here, a picture of an old newspaper story included in a post by the national Olympic academy (the Olympic academy's text indicates notability as well, e.g. "famous in the world of boxing / He fulfilled the dreams of the leaders of the Iraqi sports movement / he has been dubbed the "Golden Champion" for winning the only gold medal in boxing at the Arab Tournament, in which all Arab countries participated / When he retired from boxing, he never strayed far from the boxing atmosphere, remaining attached to its champions, especially those within the army national team, where he became the team's president for many years / to date, no boxer has occupied his position in his weight class / his name flies high among the flags of immortal champions."). There's a big difference here from Gillow, as we can actually read the full text and know it to be SIGCOV. Among other things, it notes he never lost at the national championships and was a well-known national figure nicknamed the "Golden Champion". Other modern sources such as this name him as one of the "sports stars" of his era. The odds of a nationally-known figure and famed "champion" of Iraqi sports remembered decades after his career – someone we've already demonstrated to have one piece of SIGCOV – not having any further coverage during his career (we have not checked any Iraqi archives) is 0%. - It’s still not technically an independent source unless we find that newspaper directly and cite it directly. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 01:01, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- A newspaper doesn't become non-independent if its republished by an Olympic committee. WP:NEXIST. And do you seriously think there would be no further coverage in Iraq of their famous "Golden Champion" who never lost a fight in the country, won every national championship he competed for, and is remembered today as an "immortal champion" who "fulfilled the dreams of the leaders of Iraqi sports"? That would be a ludicrous assumption! Its obvious he's notable. BeanieFan11 (talk) 01:07, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- no direct source of the paper itself, no NEXIST. If you can’t find the actual paper, you can’t cite it. That’s bordering on Original research. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 02:07, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- No, that's not how it works. If we have evidence that sources exist, and here it is incredibly strong evidence, then that is sufficient to keep. I don't see how information from a newspaper is possibly "original research" at all. Do you have reason to assume the Olympic organization would fabricate newspaper stories on him? BeanieFan11 (talk) 02:16, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- I have reason to believe that the Olympic org as a non-indepnedent source would overblow the amount of coverage. Where is the actual direct citation of that specific newspaper? All I am asking for. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 12:47, 18 July 2025 (UTC)

Also is there some sort of contest going on to see who can AFD nominate the most sportspeople because there seems to be a lot of late and many have quickly been proven to be ludicrous nominations the subjects of which have had loads of SIGCOV and were clearly notable? Just asking because if there's a prize I might join in! Anxioustoavoid (talk) 12:38, 18 July 2025 (UTC)

No notable sources found per my research on Google. I was also able to find Archivi.ng, a free website which provides an archive of many Nigerian newspapers. No mentions located on there either. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 15:37, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- Note: This discussion has been included in the deletion sorting lists for the following topics: Sportspeople, Boxing, Olympics, and Nigeria. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 15:37, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- Archivi.ng has some Nigerian newspapers, but the search function works poorly (they seem to show every match for "William" by looking up William Azanor; they don't let you specifically search two names). He was the third-best boxer in Africa at two different championships. That is something that would have coverage. Furthermore, that you can't find "any mentions" at all in newspaper archives proves that those aren't great newspaper archives, given that American newspapers literally mentioned him 100+ times. BeanieFan11 (talk) 17:39, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- Then what coverage do you have or can find which demonstrates that Anzor was notable? Not everyone can access every archive. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 18:04, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- I don't have access to Nigerian newspapers. We should have someone who does have access look before we delete subjects that are extraordinarily likely to be notable. BeanieFan11 (talk) 18:09, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- Then draftify. If a subject is likely to have sources but we don't have them yet, that's what draftification is for. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 18:13, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- I don't see how I'll be able to access Nigerian newspapers in six months. BeanieFan11 (talk) 18:14, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- Well you did say that you got 100+ hits on the American newspapers. Do those demonstrate notability? InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 18:22, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- They don't, but clearly there's something wrong with the Nigerian archives you're checking if there isn't even a single match, given how many times American newspapers mentioned him. BeanieFan11 (talk) 18:24, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- So what else can we search? If we can't, there's no SIGCOV, and no SIGCOV means no article. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 18:26, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- Two Americans(?) with no access to Nigerian newspapers not finding SIGCOV on one of the best boxers in Africa/Nigeria with a Google search hardly demonstrates that there is no coverage. BeanieFan11 (talk) 18:28, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- Well if I have access to Archivi.ng, that means I do have access to some Nigerian newspapers. And if nothing is coming up there... InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 18:36, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- It means that Archivi.ng is very incomplete since American newspapers mentioned him over 100 times. It is insane to think that the U.S. would cover the top Nigerian boxer over 100 times and Nigeria would cover him 0. BeanieFan11 (talk) 18:38, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- We're going on the sources that we can find. Unless you have stuff you can find...no SIGCOV, no article. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 18:47, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- And as I said, it is ludicrous to delete articles on African champions when next to no effort is being put in to look for sources. We need to have someone check offline Nigerian newspapers. BeanieFan11 (talk) 18:48, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- And if we don't have that person, then draftify until we can. But if nothing comes up, again, no SIGCOV yet, no article yet. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 18:53, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- This feels like the clearest example of WP:NEXIST. Notability is based on the existence of SIGCOV, not its presence. Ike Lek (talk) 21:48, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- Which we still don't know if it exists. And if archives don't pull up anything, nor Google. It's also worth reading the end of NEXIST -
However, once an article's notability has been challenged, merely asserting that unspecified sources exist is seldom persuasive, especially if time passes and actual proof does not surface.

- Delete - The above discussion is a clear example of someone wasting editor time with groundless claims of notability and unreasonable demands for checking of offline databases. I would hope that the editor in question reflects on this.
- This article fails for lack of IRS SIGCOV. I don't have a Newspapers.com subscription, but a search of the NewspaperArchive through the Wikipedia Library turned up 11 hits, none of them related to the subject, all just people with similar names or bad OCR. The chances are pretty good that many/all of the hits discussed above are of the same nature. FOARP (talk) 14:01, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- Delete: Subject fails to meet the WP:GNG due to a lack of WP:SIGCOV. Let'srun (talk) 15:05, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- Redirect to Nigeria at the 1980 Summer Olympics I don't see evidence to support him having an individual article. He was knocked out in the first round of his first fight at the Olympics. He doesn't appear to meet WP:GNG, WP:ANYBIO, WP:NBOX or any other WP notability criteria. A redirect seems to me to be preferable to outright deletion. Papaursa (talk) 16:18, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
