Input on kami/emperor genealogies
[edit]There are a few articles/templates of kami and/or emperor genealogies that I have concerns with and I'd like opinions.
With the imperial genealogies we have the problem that they blur the lines between myth and reality as they state the emperors are descended from kami, and do not make it clear within the template/page that this is myth (other than one of them noting some of the emperors may be legendary, but no mention about the kami). The Imperial Household Agency doesn't even include kami in the genealogy, though they do include emperors whose existence is contested.[1]
The other issue with making a genealogy of kami is that there are multiple primary sources with conflicting information which you'd need to make decisions about what to use and not use. This is particularly problematic seeing as clans regularly attempted to claim certain genealogies for political reasons, meaning there isn't really a non-political genealogy. It isn't uncommon for Shinto academics to synthesise the information from the multiple sources, but I don't believe it should be done by a Wikipedia editor as it has been here.
I feel like something needs to be done, but I'm not positive on the right direction.
Family tree of Japanese monarchs
Template:Generations of Jimmu
Template:Eight generations of Izumo
Template:Three generations of Hyuga
(my last complaint is entirely person preference, but they're just ugly on the pages they're used on because they break the formatting) Erynamrod (talk) 20:51, 6 February 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, there was a discussion where I pointed out the mixing of in-universe and historical perspectives in more detail, but I can't find it at the moment. There is other discussion of related issues at, e.g., Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive1122#Need Japanese-speaking and maybe admin help. Other related discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Oto-takara. These are mainly the work of one well meaning but currently indefinitely blocked editor, and I agree that work is needed. Dekimasuよ! 04:37, 7 February 2026 (UTC)
- The Family tree of Japanese monarchs was originally just the monarchs from Jimmu, so we could theoretically pull out the kami and at least start with Jimmu keeping the note about the existence of some of those emperors being contested. At least then it'd be the "official" genealogy, which is verifiable.
- The most effective way I can think of for solving the myth/history problem in the templates is turning them into pages where we can put in the context. This requires them to be notable enough to justify having their own page though, and I'm not sure they are (and it doesn't solve the "who gets to decide what genealogical information to use" problem). The Three generations of Hyuga (Himuka) is a defined concept that exists[2], though it's quite niche even in Japanese, so that one might qualify, but I'm not sure about the other two.
- I might actually prefer how Ōyamatsumi handles the genealogy (minus the templates which were added later) because the article simply lists it out, illustrating the fact that there are multiple possible relations depending on what source you're looking at.
- Which makes me lean towards deleting the templates that can't be turned into a page, because they are misleading and may not even add any value because the correct information can be provided in a different, if less immediately readable, format. Erynamrod (talk) 11:03, 7 February 2026 (UTC)

The article Team Albirex Niigata has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Unreferenced for almost 18 years. Tagged as Unreferenced for 15 years. Also tagged for promotion and lack of notability for 7 months. Fails GNG.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion based on established criteria.
If the proposed deletion has already been carried out, you may request undeletion of the article at any time. Bearian (talk) 20:10, 7 February 2026 (UTC)

Translation help needed for bilingual welcome template
[edit]
Courtesy link: Template:Welcome-foreign/Japanese
Hello. Can you help verify a brief, English-to-Japanese translation in a welcome template?
Template:Welcome-foreign is a bilingual welcome template used to welcome new users who have written content in some other language besides English. The template welcomes them first in English, then in their own language, as long as it is one of the three dozen languages it can handle. New languages are easily added. I have added support for Japanese, but I don't know Japanese so I used (old, pre-AI) automatic translation to create Template:Welcome-foreign/Japanese from the original at Template:Welcome-foreign/English. I'd appreciate it if a native Japanese speaker could verify or improve the translation. Feel free to edit it directly, or paste a better translation below, if you prefer not to edit a template. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 06:32, 9 February 2026 (UTC)
- It's junk: starts "nice to meet you Mr/Ms/Mx 'Welcome-foreign'". Need to start again. Imaginatorium (talk) 17:20, 19 February 2026 (UTC)
Can someone help me check a DYK hook?
[edit]Hello I am reviewing Template:Did you know nominations/Meiō incident but I don’t know any Japanese language or history so I am struggling to check the source of the hook. If anyone could take a quick look that would be great Chidgk1 (talk) 07:00, 9 February 2026 (UTC)
- I got as far as figuring out that the original diary entry is probably digitized in booklet 126 of the original manuscript here, but without the ability to read 15thC Japanese I couldn't get farther than that. There's a published transcription of the diary too, which would be easier to throw some machine translation at (the Zoku Shiryō Taisei (続史料大成) edition: Daijō'in Jisha Zōjiki, 12 vols., ed. Takeuchi Rizō et al. (Rinsen Shoten, 1978; revised edition 2001)), but I can't access it. I am also not sure if it's appropriate to cite this info directly to a contemporaneous primary source, rather than to a modern secondary source. ~ le 🌸 valyn (talk) 03:35, 19 February 2026 (UTC)
Dethronement of Emperor Yōzei
[edit]What is the correct date when Emperor Yōzei was dethroned? The Yōzei article says March 4, while the Emperor Kōkō article says that Yōzei was dethroned February 4 and Kōkō reigned from March 5. ~2026-79235-7 (talk) 08:14, 9 February 2026 (UTC)

The article Ayako Enomoto has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Tagged as for BLP reference and Notability concerns for 15 years. No other language has a reliably sourced article from which to translate. Poorly sourced WP:BLP. In ordinary times, not a big problem, but nowadays, this is a legal risk.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Editors-San, please add reliable sources. Bearian (talk) 00:15, 20 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Bearian:
Done - While, I'm heavily reliant on jisho.org for unknown terms. I remove/hide unreferenced stuffs and add new texts from sources I found. Any editors who is more proficient on Japanese than I do, please fix and or add more stuffs on the page. Thanks Warm Regards, Miminity (Talk?) - What I mean with the "Stuffs" are things that I'm too lazy to add or I things I'm lacking the proficiency to add. I added a book citation recommendation in the talk page plus, I didn't milk the Kotobank source enough (as I'm not too familiar with this topic). Warm Regards, Miminity (Talk?)
