Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Islands

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Islands. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Islands|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Islands. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.

Velit Bay Plantation (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

Page has two sources, one of which is an advertisement for the property sale, which I don't think counts for notability. Googling this location all I can find is a tripadvisor page with some reviews, one of which points out that it closed at some point before December 2018. I don't believe this page currently passes WP:GNG and I see little prospect for future improvement given the current status of the venue. Giuliotf (talk) 23:19, 12 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete - fails WP:GNG. Apparently, a minor, short-lived venture. A book said it was under construction in 2009. Velit Bay Plantation's website came online in 2011, they started doing blog posts and stopped that year. Facebook account had no posts beyond 2011. By 2014 their website declared that Velit Bay Plantation is now FOR SALE. Indeed, an archived version of the first reference lists the property for sale for $4,000,000 in 2014. There's a Lonely Planet listing of it, but it's one paragraph long (The winding 2km drive down the rocky road to spectacular Velit Bay is a visual sensation, while the small, open-sided 15 South does much to tempt the taste buds. Chill on the private beach, where there are deckchairs and a bunch of activities, kayaking, kitesurfing, snorkelling and beach volleyball - or indulge in a fresh seafood or pasta.) and another paragraph tells you how to get there. Nothing else on Google Books except apparent false positives. Visited by a Guardian journalist in 2015 for lunch, noted to be staggeringly beautiful and with Cattle and coconut groves. The Daily Mail (LOL) wrote that Cate Blanchett visited in 2016. Nothing on Google Scholar, TWL, Newspapers.com. What was Velit Bay Plantation is apparently no more by 2019. It became a noni plant farm by 2022. This isn't enough for detailed coverage. starship.paint (talk / cont) 09:52, 13 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - the Lonely Planet is the only reliable source that I can see, so it lacks significant coverage in reliable sources. Soft delete in case it gets re-developed. Bearian (talk) 18:04, 13 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Varo (island) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)

After extensive searching I was unable to find any other sources that mention the island or even locate it on a map. As such if it exists I believe it fails WP:GEOLAND Giuliotf (talk) 19:40, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have added more refs to support notability--books with ISBN numbers and pages. Lamro (talk) 13:17, 7 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for providing the extra links. Unfortunately I can't access some of them, but I was able to access one of the new sources for Varo which helpfully has Varo Island labelled on a map in roughly the location where it should have been (-16.5422, 167.6965), which likely means that Leumanang is here (-16.5303, 167.7054) (one of the alternate names for this island on geonames is Limaning, so it seems like a good match), which would make the island here Arseo (-16.5200, 167.7155) (using google earth to look at historical photos I can see some buildings on the south of the island in 2003 with the island becoming overgrown between 2003 and 2015, which is consistent with what is written on the wiki page. The names I have found for these three islands are Fido, Limani and Faroun.
Unfortunately I am unable to access most of the new references, best I've been able to manage is using google books to see some snippets, for Varo Island as far as I can tell both new sources have very brief mentions that help confirm the location of the islands, but little else (maybe someone with better access to the sources can provide more context).
For Leumanang Island, one source is a brief mention that was also added to the Varo page, the mapaction PDF I am unable to access (the url might be incorrect) and for reference 4 ([1]) I am unable to see a preview and I can only see 3 snippets, all three of which are snippets of maps, but where the location of Leumanang appears to be further north, near Norsup, so it appears that these three mentions at least are of a different place with the same name (possibly an alternate name of Uri (island) or Uripiv or maybe the island here (-16.0990, 167.4427) which I have been unable to find a name for, but these are just guesses. I also suspect the current reference 7 refers to one of these islands as they are missing from that page and the other Leumanang Island looks uninhabited).
I'll tidy up the wikidata entries and add the location information so the conversation can be better informed. Giuliotf (talk) 17:15, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I am also nominating the following related page because for the same reason, (unable to find any other mentions of it or even locate it on a map):

Leumanang (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
