Wikipedia:What false balance is not

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

WP:FALSEBALANCE is a policy which explains that WP:NPOV does not state or imply that every minority view, fringe theory, or extraordinary claim needs to be presented along with commonly accepted mainstream scholarship as if they were of equal validity. It exists to ensure that exceptional claims such as moon landing conspiracy theories, which are not supported by reliable sources, are not treated with the same credibility as claims supported by a majority or a significant minority of reliable sources.

WP:FALSEBALANCE is not...

  • ...a reason to present opinions, including unanimously accepted opinions, as facts.[a]
  • ...a reason to present a claim as fact if there are reliable sources seriously contesting it, even if it is the most widely accepted viewpoint.[b]
  • ...permission to use judgemental language or write disparagingly about any subject, even if they make minority or fringe claims.[c]
  • ...permission to omit or disregard opinions that are held by a significant minority of reliable sources.[d]
  • ...grounds to describe a claim as academic consensus, unless reliable sources directly say it is academic consensus.[e]
  • ...grounds to describe claims as rejected or classify them as pseudoscience if they are not directly described this way by reliable sources.[f]
  • ...justification for editors to debunk claims themselves.[f]
  • ...justification for the community to vote on which viewpoint to accept when there is a dispute in reliable sources.[g]
