Non-free image of a living person :3 F4U (they/it) 16:14, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I'm concededly a novice when it comes to WP image policies. From what I understand from F4U, images of living persons are rarely accepted. But I think there are two potential reasons why an exception should be made in this case. First, the image is a dual biography picture and historical-event picture: The image is of Goetz is not a random "subject walking on the street" image, as many pictures of Goetz are. Rather, it depicts him at his resentencing hearing related to the charges that stemmed from the 1984 New York City Subway shooting, which is the only article for which this image is used. That resentencing is discussed, albeit briefly, in the article here. In other words, the image serves to illustrate both Goetz (because no free picture of Goetz can be found) and an event discussed in the article, the resentencing hearing (because no free image of that event can be found). Second, a modern image of Goetz would be less appropriate, because Goetz has nearly doubled in age. Importantly, the article is not on Goetz; it is on the 1984 shooting and its cultural and legal aftermath. As such, I'd argue that there's value in relatively contemporaneous photographs. Goetz, born in late 1947, was 37 at the time of the shooting and 41 at the time of his resentencing (and this photograph). He is now 75.--Jerome Frank Disciple (talk) 16:22, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Freedom4U: In light of User:Glades12's comment, I have moved this entire discussion here and updated the tag on the image page.--Jerome Frank Disciple (talk) 17:49, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
