Ping to admin

[edit]

As you are a recently active admin, this is a ping for doing a revert of an undiscussed page move, filed at Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests#Administrator needed, initially under Requests to revert undiscussed moves, but shifted to the Administrator needed section. Original name 2025–2026 Iranian protests, undiscussed name 2025–present Iranian protests. This has been waiting for many hours, is a CTOP, and is linked from the main page. A tag has been placed on Category:Help articles by quality indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 18:06, 13 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Cumberland Hotel

[edit]

Many thanks for taking some photos. I have also added yours of the corner view, which is a good one. I guess you weren't too happy with File:The Cumberland hotel, Great Cumberland Place (1).jpg, it isn't a great photo, but no doubt the traffic keeps on coming. If you are ever passing when you spot a clear view, do please try again! Moonraker (talk) 09:07, 2 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@Moonraker You're welcome, thanks for all the work on the article! (I spotted it in the most edited new articles list last week). Agree it's not a great photo: only had my phone not my proper camera, and the traffic was indeed fairly constant. There was a coach parked in front of the entrance for a while so I was pleased enough when that moved off and I could get a photo at all. the wub "?!" 17:11, 2 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – February 2026

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2026).

Arbitration

  • Due to the result of a recent motion, a rough consensus of administrators at the arbitration enforcement noticeboard may impose an expanded topic ban on Israel, Israelis, Jews, Judaism, Palestine, Palestinians, Islam, and/or Arabs, if an editor's Arab-Israeli conflict topic ban is determined to be insufficient to prevent disruption. At least one diff per area expanded into should be cited.

Arbitration

  • Following a motion, remedy 9.1 of the Conduct in deletion-related editing case has been amended to limit TenPoundHammer to one XfD nomination or PROD per 24-hour period.
  • Following a motion, the Iskandar323 further POV pushing motion has been rescinded.
  • The Arbitration Committee has passed a housekeeping motion rescinding a number of outdated remedies and enforcement provisions across multiple legacy cases. In most instances, existing sanctions remain in force and continue to be appealable through the usual processes, while some case-specific remedies were amended or clarified.

A barnstar for you!

Am I allowed to warn users if I'm not an admin?

[edit]

I have been doing so after reverting vandalistic edits before reporting them on AIV. I'm not an admin. Am I allowed to do this? Am I at least allowed to do anything up to level 3 warnings (since I don't actually have the power to block)? I want to make sure I'm not misusing Twinkle on this. VidanaliK (talk to me) (contributions) 00:40, 10 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@VidanaliK Yes, you can certainly warn users at any level which is appropriate. You can even give a level 4 warning if it gets to that point. And thanks for the barnstar! I wasn't actually looking at AIV but came across the vandals while using Wikipedia:AntiVandal. Haven't done much anti-vandalism for a while but it seems to be a busy night tonight! the wub "?!" 00:50, 10 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick reply! Well, now I know my anti-vandal workflow: revert, warn, report. I had no clue it was possible to revert an edit so quickly until I did it myself using RecentChanges.
Also, another question; why do admins sometimes give blocks of only 31 hours (specific?) (and small) when it is often very disruptive and likely they will go back to vandalising immediately? VidanaliK (talk to me) (contributions) 00:55, 10 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
31 hours as the go-to block is an old Wikipedia tradition: someone started doing it, people copied them, and eventually it became the default option. There is some logic to it: most vandals are just bored kids who will move on. And if they do try to come back, 31 hours ensures they can't come back at the same time the next day. See User:Magister Mathematicae/31 hours. the wub "?!" 01:05, 10 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

It appears you may have forgotten to list Neurotransmitter  4 as VA4 per the discussion you closed on Wikipedia talk:Vital articles/Level 4. I just happened to notice scrolling through. I2Overcome talk 06:57, 10 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it looks like none of the articles you closed at ~23:30 UTC 9 April 2026 got added or removed? I2Overcome talk 07:00, 10 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind, I see it listed. Whatever bot does the updates must not run very frequently. If that’s the case, please ignore this. I2Overcome talk 07:10, 10 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the bot runs daily. And I believe it's common practice to let it do the grunt work of updating counters and the lower levels. the wub "?!" 08:48, 10 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

You are invited to participate in the Destubathon of the Americas, a contest/editathon which will run from May 1 to May 31. The goal is to destub as many of our 475,000+ stubs for the Americas (from Alaska down to Chile) as possible. A good chance to have fun in expanding many of our old stale stubs and win up to £2000 ($2680) in Amazon vouchers for expanding stub articles. Sign up in the Contestants/participants section on the contest page if interested. Even if not interested in prizes you are still warmly welcome to participate in it as an editathon! Hopefully we can achieve something significant in the month of May together! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:47, 15 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Changes to user permissions made from Meta are now included in the local user permissions log (T6055).
  • The autoconfirmed user group will soon be modified such that the four-day account age requirement begins when an account makes its first edit (T418484).

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case SchroCat has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case closed on 15 April.
  • Per a recent motion, appeals of blocks from the conflict-of-interest VRT queue are, by default, appealed on-wiki through the normal unblock process. However, they may be heard by the Committee if COIVRTers disagree on the interpretation of the evidence or believe ArbCom would be better suited to hear the appeal. Administrators are also advised that loosening or lifting such blocks without the consent of someone with access to the queue or ArbCom can be grounds for desysopping.
  • Per a recent motion, restrictions issued directly by the Committee may now be enforced with blocks which work exactly like contentious topic blocks.
  • The arbitration case Maghreb has been closed.
