Deleted Article Retrieval

[edit]

Hi Nyttend,

You deleted my article: 23:13, 31 May 2024 Nyttend talk contribs deleted page Draft:Anne H. Flitcraft (G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion) (thank) that I need for a class assignment and I was wondering if it was any way possible to get that article back? Or if you could possibly put it back into draft space so that I can edit it? Please let me know, thanks.

Pennsylvania municipality pix list

[edit]

I see you haven't updated your User:Nyttend/Pennsylvania list in a while. Late in the summer, I went through pretty much the whole list of 2500+ municipalities checking off if there was a Commons category, any photos, and a locator map. By checking against geo-located photos on Open Street Map and other photos since added, I basically have the updated list of municipalities like you had, good news we're down to about 157 municipalities without good or any images for their infobox. Because your list is so comprehensive and well put-together, is it alright with you if I go ahead and update your page/images? —Mr. Matté (Talk/Contrib) 22:35, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Communities of Perry County, Tennessee template edits

[edit]

Good afternoon! I see that you reverted an edit to this template to a version including a number of red links to pages that had been draftified until notability can be established. I am unsure of what you mean by your edit summary of "Redirecting communities to the county is grossly inappropriate," as it appears as though all you did was restore a number of red links. Could you please further explain what you were trying to do? Thanks! nf utvol (talk) 19:22, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

They might not be notable, though. I added these places after I found them in the GNIS, but before I discovered the rule that simply existing in GNIS isn't enough for geographic places. Based on that, I took the articles that I created that I was having trouble finding additional sources or evidence of notability of, draftified then until I could do more research, and removed the entries I had created from the template. I didn't just go deleting redlinks, I deleted redlinks that I had added myself on a mistaken interpretation of the rules, then corrected when I realized my error. Either way, I'm still not sure what you were talking about with the redirecting comment, as none were redirects to the county.nf utvol (talk) 01:47, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nyttend, You created an entry for the historic home in Henrico named Edge Hill - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edge_Hill_(Richmond,_Virginia). You describe the accompanying photo as Front of Edge Hill but the street side view is the back. The south-facing front is magnificent and cannot be seen from Greenview Drive. This error would not matter but that the front of the house is significant to it's historic designation, please correct the text for your photo. Kwhopson (talk) 11:31, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Partial blocks

[edit]

Per your question at ANI, I'll try to answer.

You can block editors from specific pages, in whatever namespace, or from entire namespaces. This is often useful in stopping edit warriors, as it's less drastic than a siteblock, and allows them to make their case on the article talkpage, for instance. You can block from multiple pages in different namespaces.

Namespace blocks can be useful for dealing with an editor who is to focused on WP space pot-stirring. . . Someone who is less than competent with templates might need a template space block. I've also used it for editors who are polite and communicative, but who have chronic sourcing issues in article space.

It can be extremely useful where you might otherwise have to place an overly large IP rangeblock - you can deal with a focused problem IP range by blocking the individual articles or editors they've focused on. Harassment IPs are often dealt with that way.

I wasn't keen on it at first, and there are still many times when someone just needs a siteblock. But it's a little gentler than a siteblock for editors whose problems can be isolated to a few locations, or where you want to preserve access to most of the 'pedia from a big range..

See WP:PBLOCK. Acroterion (talk) 21:31, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

First Denbigh Parish Church Archeological Site Picture - precision location?

[edit]

Hi Nyttend! You have an original picture attached to the First Denbigh Parish Church Archeological Site article here . In the description, you have it located 'off Miller Road' at 37° 06′ 14″ N, 76° 33′ 07″ W. Based on the NRHP nomination documentation, https://www.dhr.virginia.gov/VLR_to_transfer/PDFNoms/121-0037_First_Denbigh_Church_AE_Site_1982_Final_Nomination.pdf, the location was cited as being nearest 18 Walters Road, about 4500ft south, at the next creek convergence. Language in the NRHP doc described 15 feet out of 50 of the church having being lost to erosion before rip rap was added, implying it was right on the river. The Newport News property records at https://assessment.nnva.gov/PT/datalets/datalet.aspx?mode=sales&UseSearch=no&pin=178000121&jur=700&taxyr=2025&LMparent=20 also match the NRHP assertion of a Donald Shenk owning the land at the time of the 1981/2 submission. Before I update, do you happen to have a different source or personal knowledge that would put the location that 0.85 miles north, near Miller Road? Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. Since you said you were curious about CTOP

[edit]

Since you mentioned that you weren't familiar with the CTOP protection enforcements and were curious - if enforcing a protection of a page as part of WP:CTOP - there's a logging procedure outlined at Wikipedia:Contentious_topics#Logging to log said protection at the relevant subsection in the log, such as Wikipedia:Arbitration_enforcement_log#American_politics_(CT/AP) for enforcing an AMPOL protection so a history of such protections is centralized, for example to say be able to see how often a certain arbitration enforcement had to be enacted each year. As I'm editing fairly frequently on various CTOP articles and counter vandalism patrol, I've encountered my fair share of it, so I've become fairly familiar with the theoretical aspect of it to seek help from admins on it to help enforcement as necessary :) It's up to the admins discretion, but given the vandalism appeared clearly politically motivated, I would have considered it to fall under the AMPOL CTOP, which is why I suggested logging it, but it's up to you as the admin that imposed it of course :) Raladic (talk) 04:35, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for reverting the PROD tag I added to various location pages. I did read the page for notability of geographic places but I mistakenly thought "census tracts" were the same as census-designated districts. I've researched within censuses for years and it wired my brain to refer to what WP:NGEO refers to as "census tracts" as "enumeration districts." I was thinking of census tract as "census-defined tract of land." I'm really glad you fixed it, and I learned something! Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 03:12, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, @Nyttend, your reversion of my addition of the PROD tag to Brook does not have obvious justificaiton. If you refer to the page I lined above it SPECIFICALLY says GNIS is not reliable and not considered evidence of notability. I'm going to undo your reversion of my edit on that ground. Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 03:18, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Let me add here, the edit-summary "Obviously it meets WP:NGEO; don't prod pages out of ignorance" is a personal attack, especially when repeated 40+ times. WP:CIVIL behaviour is important. FOARP (talk) 12:49, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Decreasing Protection of Tim Walz

[edit]

Hi Nyttend. I would like to suggest reducing the page protection of Tim Walz from ECP to Semi. This is due to Walz no longer heavily being in the news and therefore probably not a target for vandals, considering that election season, when the initial vandalism occurred, has passed. It also feels extreme to retain the protection level for Walz, since both Harris and Biden, who left office, already have their pages reduced to semi. I hope you will consider this arguement. Yes I am a nerd -XCBRO172 (How could you tell?) 06:28, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Nyttend. Following a request for comment in May 2025, the community has decided to implement an activity requirement for the autopatrolled permission. Because your account has not edited in the last three years, the autopatrolled permission has been removed from your account. This action is purely procedural and does not affect your ability to create articles; if you return to actively creating articles, you may request that the permission be restored through the normal process. When returning, please consider taking some time to re-familiarize yourself with common practices and how they may have changed over the past few years if you wish to request the permission back. Request to take a photo

[edit]

Nyttend,

here: [2] https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Veterans%27_monument_in_Darlington,_Pennsylvania.jpg. If you have time, could you please take a photo of the company that made this monument. Usually, the few companies molded their name on the base in small print. It may be elsewhere. It would be nice to attribute to a specific company and town that moulded this monument. Thank you, -- Ooligan (talk) 00:27, 19 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Great minds...

At Redemption movement, you made the exact edit I was about to make--adding a comma. When I went into editing mode, the comma was there! I did have the article open for about a day before I got around to reading it, though. Cheers. David10244 (talk) 06:10, 27 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

A tag has been placed on Draft:Hurricane Kristy (2024) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, at Talk:Hurricane Kristy (2024). When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. End self-requested block

{{unblock|reason=I asked to be blocked to run a test (see [[WP:AN#PBLOCK_me_for_testing]]), and I'm done with the test.}}

Is this template correct for a partial block? If there are syntax errors, or if something else is wrong, please let me know. Nyttend (talk) 23:49, 31 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Weird. I just found that I'm able to un-partialblock myself. Nyttend (talk) 23:52, 31 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Temp block for testing

[edit]

Could you PBLOCK me from User:Nyttend/testrjehtunrinetdngrm please, for 24 hours? Almost done with block testing, but there's one thing I forgot previously. Please disable autoblock, since it's a technical testing block, not something meant to prevent disruption :-) Nyttend (talk) 10:25, 1 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Done. (Hope I did that right – if not, squeal!) Once your block expires, behave yourself, or the next block will have to be indef. :) DoubleGrazing (talk) 10:32, 1 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Uh, what? Is this gibberish? The letter ð is pretty much restricted to Germanic languages, which don't look like this — š looks Slavic, and the combination of ç and ü looks Turkish. Nyttend (talk) 08:23, 30 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

my answers reverted

[edit]

I'm super confused, why were my answers here reverted? you can delete this after notifying me, I just don't know who else to contact. Sarefo (talk) 21:55, 30 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Can you help me understand why you removed my CSD? If you check the transclusions you will see it is unused. I personally handled all of the conversions which is why I put the CSD on it. - Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 04:00, 3 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The age of the redirect is not a factor when applying WP:X3; consensus has been that these redirects should be deleted regardless of age. (The point of WP:X3 is to avoid flooding WP:RFD with old redirects where there is consensus to delete.) Helpful Raccoon (talk) 23:51, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox Australian place

[edit]

Hey. I wanted to leave you a direct message regarding the tfd discussion for Template:Infobox Australian place. For starters let me say I have huge respect for you as an editor. For one thing you're an administrator, but you have also helped me out in the past and corrected my errors in the past. So I wanted to start by acknowledging that.

A LOT of work has gone into this recent iteration of Infobox Australian place. It is NOT a true merger, nor is it a deletion. It is a conversion. Your point that the TFD starts with Propse merging is totally a valid one. That is because I used WP:TWINKLE to initiate the TFD and it only gives 2 options, delete or merge. I should have read it more carefully and clarified from the get go. I have corrected that error with a strike and replacement text. I will just point out that the 2nd sentence of the TFD states It is time for this template to be converted to be a wrapper for Template:Infobox settlement (emphasis added).

Anyway, let me be clear, with the conversion, ALL information is retained. There is not, at this point, any advocating for removal of information that is important to Australian places. Same goes for all the customization of displaying maps and LGAs, rainfall, etc. (full disclosure there are some kinks still being worked out with the maps, but nothing that can't be figured out).

What this does it modernize the template, eliminating things like hard coded conversion such as {{rnd|{{{area}}}/2.589988110336|1}} to convert the area from km2 to sq mi in favor of more modern approaches. It also unifies the templates look and feel to be like the other 576,000+ settlement pages on Wikipedia.

I'm sure that as an admin you have other projects you are working on, but can I please implore you to take some time to really look at the testcases? If you have specific objections to how something is being displayed or objections to how things are being implemented, I/we 100% want to hear that! A number of people (including Innesw & Joy as well as a number of Australian editors which I am not) have found issues. Some of them were typos, some of them were just my lack of understanding about Australia. I really want to hear this feedback so that we can improve the template. I just ask that you please don't rubber stamp this as just another attempt at the same thing. I really did my homework and tried to address the issues raised in previous TFDs.

Thanks for hearing me out! Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 05:38, 13 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sites

[edit]

Hi Nyttend, I hope you're well.

Just to note that I have reverted your recent flurry of bold moves, for example Adams Site -> Adams site etc. Looking at book sources, I'm seeing plenty of sources which render these names with a lower-case site, for example:

to name just a few - there seem to be plenty for all the names, often from high-quality archaeology literature.

Bearing in mind that MOS:CAPS requires titles to be "consistently capitalized in a substantial majority of independent, reliable sources" in order to qualify for title case, I'm not sure that bar is met in these cases. Granted, the official websites for the sites seem to use Site quite a lot, but overall when considering all sources, I'm not sure it's clear cut. Given that the stable titles were the site versions since 2022, I've reverted per WP:RMUM, and I think a formal RM will be required if you wish to consider moves. Guide to temporary accounts

[edit]

Hello, Nyttend. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern: ~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options → Tick Enable the user info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.
