I have seen your post on reddit

I have seen your post on reddit and felt like you seem to know this platform really well and was hoping you possibly could assist me in publishing a page. I feel like I keep hitting stonewalls when ever I submit. I'm currently reediting the article.... again.. But when its ready could you offer critique before i submit? {{Hatnote group}} is a different color than {{Hatnote}}

Hey! This a minor thing that's been bugging me for a while. In dark mode on the mobile app, Hatnote has a light-gray color, as does nearly every other hatnote template. But Hatnote group just displays as white.

Weirdly, on the web browser, it still displays as that light-gray. Is there any way to fix this? Farkle Griffen (talk) 02:37, 25 March 2025 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure that's a bug in the mobile app caused by the mobile app restyling the content; the restyling doesn't "know about" {{hatnote group}} and so fails to restyle it properly. {{Nihiltres |talk |edits}} 21:35, 25 March 2025 (UTC)
I don't know much about how these work in Wikipedia, but you're saying the light-gray coloring is done by Wikipedia itself, and isn't part of the code for the template? If so, who could I message about this? Farkle Griffen (talk) 16:26, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
Sort of. A typical hatnote template is some text wrapped in an HTML <div> element that has the CSS classes hatnote (or hatnote-inline) and navigation-not-searchable. Then in turn on-wiki styles are applied to elements with those classes; these days with CSS applied by TemplateStyles at Module:Hatnote/styles.css instead of the older method of putting those styles in MediaWiki:Common.css.
The mobile app, for whatever reason, decides to ignore some of this styling and reformat some things in ways that its designers must think are worthwhile to support readers on phone-shaped and phone-sized devices, including restyling some templates (like hatnotes and infoboxes) and removing others (many navigational templates). The logical solution is to report the issue as a bug in the mobile app over on Phabricator.
I'm … resigned … about the problem because I wrote the template as a prototype, then people just started using it because it's useful in adding some flexibility to hatnotes. {{Nihiltres |talk |edits}} 18:55, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
@Nihiltres, it just got fixed. Thanks! Farkle Griffen (talk) 18:22, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
