Adrianne Wadewitz edit-a-thons in Southern New England

As you may have already heard, the Wikipedia community lost an invaluable member of the community last month. Adrianne Wadewitz was a feminist scholar of 18th-Century British literature, and a prolific editor of the site. As part of a worldwide series of tributes, New England Wikimedians, in conjunction with local institutions of higher learning, have created three edit-a-thons that will be occurring in May and June. The events are as follows:

Eva Batt

[edit]

Hi Maynard as an American do you have access to historical newspaper archive websites? I have been subscribed to several for 7 years. In total I have spent over £6000 documenting historical photographs and newspaper articles of vegans and vegetarians. I am not a paid Wikipedia editor, nor am I personally funded by any organization; all this has come out of my own pocket. Monthly subscriptions are expensive! I can't afford to keep at this and my partner isn't too happy. She would rather have the money spent on our vegan weekly shop.

The outcome is that I am removing my international newspaper subscriptions, meaning I will not have access to USA databases for historical newspapers. Chronicling America is free but it doesn't cover much from the the 1950s or 1960s, it doesn't have many high-quality photographs like other paid databases. The reason I am asking about this is because there must be a good photograph of Eva Batt somewhere in American newspaper archives. Eva Batt was British but she spent a lot of time in the USA. We already have several non-free photographs of her [2] which can be used as a last resort. However, I would rather find an image that is not copyrighted of her published prior to 1963. If you have access to any databases and you find anything, let me know. I am keeping (probably indefinitely!) paid access to European newspapers as this is a huge part of my research but there doesn't seem to be much coverage of Eva Batt in the British Press. I plan on creating Eva Batt's Wikipedia article sometime in the next month. Veg Historian (talk) 16:55, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have asked Freya Dinshah and her daughter, Anne Dinshah, who now runs American Vegan Society, to upload some photos that they have taken, but they have pleaded overwork. I would be willing to work on finding photographs for biographical articles if these could be sent to me in an updateable chart (by separate e-mail). But I need to be (a) brought up to date on the needed procurement process and (b) given clear instructions on how to go through the steps to make acceptable photos available to you or Wikipedia. I (may seem to) learn fast, but I need each step clearly spelled out (in separate e-mail) for my instruction and learning. MaynardClark (talk) 17:14, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Dan Abrams Article

[edit]

Hi MaynardClark, I'm working to address the tags on Dan Abrams's page which point to promotional content and too many section headers. In my edit request, I have suggested a redraft of the page which removes many of the section headers and the promotional language. I see that you're a member of WP:BLP, so I hope that you'll consider taking a look and implementing the edit. 2020AM2009 (talk) 15:52, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Fun Awards Idea

[edit]

Haha, I love the idea of awards like "The Marinated Tofu Award" or "The Vegetable Crudites Award"! If we wanted to make it official within the Vegetarianism and Veganism WikiProject, here's how we could go about it:

1. Define Award Criteria

[edit]
  • Purpose: We'd need to decide what contributions these awards would recognize—such as quality article writing, helpful collaboration, or passion for plant-based topics.
  • Categories: Some fun categories could be:
    • Best Article on Vegan/Vegetarian History
    • Best Plant-Based Cooking Content
    • Outstanding Collaboration in the WikiProject
    • Most Creative Edits

2. Create Fun Award Descriptions

[edit]

Each award should have a fun, creative description, like:

  • "The Marinated Tofu Award": Awarded to someone who has made significant contributions to an article with thorough, thoughtful edits.
  • "The Vegetable Crudites Award": Given to someone who has contributed fresh, creative ideas to the project or quickly improved discussions.

3. Nominations and Voting

[edit]
  • Nominate: Members could nominate contributors for the awards (maybe monthly or quarterly).
  • Vote: After nominations, members could vote for the winners, or a smaller group could decide.

4. Add It to WikiProject Pages

[edit]
  • We’d create a new section on the WikiProject page for these awards.
  • Announce winners in an informal "award ceremony."
  • Display the awards on user pages with links to their contributions.

5. Create Digital Badges

[edit]
  • Digital badges (like a tofu or vegetable icon) could be created for winners to display on their user pages as a visual recognition of their contribution.

6. Collaborate with the Community

[edit]
  • We could start a discussion on the WikiProject’s talk page to finalize the awards and get input from the community before launching.

It would be a fun way to recognize contributions, keep the project positive, and encourage more involvement in plant-based topics!

What do you think? :)

Other Potential WikiProject Awards for Veganism and Vegetarianism

Here are a few other fun and creative WikiProject Awards that could be developed for the Veganism and Vegetarianism WikiProject:

This submission appears to read more like an advertisement than an entry in an encyclopedia. Encyclopedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources, not just to materials produced by the creator of the subject being discussed. Draft talk:Maloney Properties
Draft:Maloney Properties MaynardClark (talk) 22:21, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that as since I reviewed Norman A. Scotch I probably have some minor COI involving you and also unfortunately I do agree with the previous reviewer; it's quite promotional and there really aren't many reliable sources cited in the article. Best, GoldRomean (talk) 22:29, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I needed to hear your agreement.
I thought that I had removed all seeminly-promotional wording and materials and that I had rebalanced that article with equal coverage of the competing property management companies in the affordable housing space.
Perhaps a different article would make sense - focusing on the group of property management companies based in Greater Boston that support affordble housing here. It is a niche, and it surely has its pressures. MaynardClark (talk) 00:11, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure what you meant by the last paragraph, but currently for example even the section title "Serving a Range of Communities" is promotional/NPOV. Either way, as said above, congrats on Norman A. Scotch but I won't be reviewing this article. GoldRomean (talk) 01:03, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I honestly don't see how that is "promotional" because they serve 159 residential properties and over 11,000 units (a book of business that they developed in 44 years of operation), which is "a range" - which is spelled out as apartment buildings, condominiums, public housing, housing cooperatives, and three-decker residences. There may be an editorial bias in not reading that for exactly what it is (a pretty straightforward description of what they do), but I can appreciate the obstacle a descriptive artricle would confront. I'm happy to let this rest for a few months, but I don't want to face deletion over and over again. It's only a draft. I had an interest in a company that I see throughout the areas of Boston where I walk or otherwise travel, and (surprising to me over the years) contracts for many publicly-supported low-income housing have been granted to Maloney (and they seem to know how to bid for those contracts). MaynardClark (talk) 01:32, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I changed that to "Property Management Activities" and am reviewing the wording in the section. Indeed, that title ought to have been changed. It reads too much like a narrative, and IMO isnot encyclopedic. MaynardClark (talk) 01:39, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Articles for Creation backlog drive

[edit]

Hello MaynardClark:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive in June!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 1 month of outstanding reviews from the current 3+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 June 2025 through 30 June 2025.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 3200 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:25, 20 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. You're invited to participate in The World Destubathon. We're aiming to destub a lot of articles and also improve longer stale articles. It will be held from Monday June 16 - Sunday July 13. There is over $3300 going into it, with $500 the top prize and $300 top prize for most Science and Tech destubs and improvements. If you are interested in winning something to save you money in buying books for future content, or just see it as a good editathon opportunity to see a lot of articles improved for subjects which interest you, sign up on the page in the participants section if interested. Even if you can only manage a few articles they would be very much appreciated and help make the content produced as diverse and broad as possible! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:58, 15 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit the draft for review!" button at the top of the page OR move the page back. Alpha3031 (tc) 07:58, 19 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Your submission at Articles for creation: Ron Pickarski (June 25)

[edit]
Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed. Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. The reasons left by Tails Wx were:
This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of people). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia.
This submission does not appear to be written in the formal tone expected of an encyclopedia article. Entries should be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources. Please rewrite your submission in a more encyclopedic format. Please make sure to avoid peacock terms that promote the subject.
Please check the submission for any additional comments left by the reviewer. You are encouraged to edit the submission to address the issues raised and resubmit after they have been resolved.

Destubathon runs until the 16th of July

[edit]

Hi, just a courtesy message to notify you in case you haven't seen the Wikipedia:The World Destubathon contest update in the last few days that we've decided to run the full month until the 16th of July. For those who have been too busy to contribute, we would love some help in reaching 4000 articles by Wednesday night! At present we're about 480 articles short!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:52, 13 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your contributions to Milton Mills (vegan physician). Unfortunately, I do not think it is ready for publishing at this time because it needs more sources to establish notability and it is promotional and reads like an advertisement. I have converted your article to a draft which you can improve, undisturbed for a while.

Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit the draft for review!" button at the top of the page OR move the page back. ProtobowlAddict talk! 03:39, 17 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That is an untrue accusation (and libelous). I was not paid to develop this article. It fits within the WikiProjects that are mentioned on the talk page.MaynardClark (talk) 16:13, 3 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft article, Draft:Magnus Klaue

[edit]

Hello, MaynardClark. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or draft page you started, "Magnus Klaue".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material, the draft has been deleted. When you plan on working on it further and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Liz Read! Talk! 02:11, 14 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Why aren't we notified BEFORE the deletion has been done?
If we forget, why not routinely notify article creators, say, 5 months after inactivity, or 5.5 months after inactivity.̴̴ The "Magnus Klaue" article was an English translation of the already-existing German-language article.̴̴̴ MaynardClark (talk) 12:22, 14 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
FireflyBot automatically sends a message after the first 5 months (#Concern regarding Draft:Magnus Klaue). It does not send follow-up notifications. -- Reconrabbit 20:00, 2 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Why would I not see such a message from FireflyBot? MaynardClark (talk) 02:55, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's on this page. I found it by scrolling up to 2 February 2025. I have this problem too. All I can advise is keeping a list of drafts you are working on so that they don't fall by the wayside. -- Reconrabbit 12:15, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Articles for deletion/Plant-based cat food

[edit]

Hi MaynardClark, I know you have been active on the vegan and vegetarian dog food page. If your knowledge extends to plant-based cats, I would appreciate your input on the AfD discussion for this page if you're interested.

Help with article review

[edit]

Hi, I work for journalist Vicky Ward. I recently rewrote her career section in my sandbox to add many more citations and improve the organization all while removing promotional phrases. I am looking for an editor who can review it and replace the current section if they think it meets all policies and criteria. Since I have a conflict of interest I won't do this myself, but I would appreciate your feedback. Thank you! Tatianacooper16 (talk) 19:52, 5 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Mobility portfolio for deletion

Information icon Hello, I'm Encoded. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Alice Crary, but you didn't provide a reliable source. On Wikipedia, it's important that article content be verifiable. If you'd like to resubmit your change with a citation, your edit is archived in the page history. If you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Encoded  Talk 💬 08:28, 28 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, MaynardClark,

Would you consider moving this draft back to your User space? Then it wouldn't be deleted every 6 months and then get restored. Just remove any AFC tags from the page and our AFC bots wouldn't list it as eligible for deletion. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 02:14, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I would happily do that. MaynardClark (talk) 03:41, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

ChatGPT

[edit]

Hi Maynard,

I know in the past you have done good work on veg related Wikipedia articles and I really appreciate that but over the last year you have been using ChatGPT which was confirmed in a recent email you sent me. I have noticed this myself and I have also had private complaints from two members of WP:VAV that you are using an AI chatbox to generate responses. When you are questioned about this you ignore replying. I also noticed some of your articles were deleted and they were essentially very poor quality. There doesn't seem to be any effort. I do not know why you ended up using this ChatGPT but unfortunately it gives the WikiProject Veganism and Vegetarianism a bad image if you are using this. It seems like you have lost interest in doing genuine research into animal rights and you are just copying and pasting content from AI answer generators. This is a very lazy approach.

I have never used any AI chatbox. All the research I do is my own and it takes me many hours of honest research to write a Wikipedia article from all sorts of historical archived material. I have spent countless hours doing research and writing articles. Outside of Wikipedia there are only a few historians involved in archiving and documenting historical animal rights material and I am in contact with them. It's going to be problematic if you are emailing some of these scholars material from ChatGPT or other AI answer generators under the name of our WikiProject. It will give us a bad image. We do not use AI generated material. What happened to good honest old fashioned historical research? What made you switch to this AI nonsense? I am not looking for an argument here I am just curious to your change in behavior.

In regard to this AI edit you made [3] you copied personal phone numbers and email addresses onto the WikiProject. Veg Historian (talk) 10:30, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Articles for Creation backlog drive

[edit]

Hello MaynardClark:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive in December!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than half a month of outstanding reviews from the current 2+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 December 2025 through 31 December 2025.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 3000 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 06:07, 23 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
