Original titles
Hello Lord Cornwallis. Firstly let me add my congratulations for the impressive amount of Wikipedia work you have done, especially in adding material about lesser known films of the past. It is an immense achievement over many years.
One matter I would like to raise is the use of original titles in information about foreign-language films. I know that you carefully follow the guidelines about Common name and Use English, but in the case of many older foreign films the issues are not straightforward. I note particularly this section of Naming_conventions_(films)#Foreign-language_films:
- "If the film has never been widely released in the English-speaking world, it is not assumed to have a commonly-recognized English name; in such cases, the native name is to be preferred over potentially variant translated titles used in English-language reliable sources."
For me the key issue is not so much the choice of an article title, for which there are always cross-references, but rather the recognisability of a film from its title within an article or filmography. Whichever title Wikipedia editors have decided upon, the fact remains that some people will identify a film by its English title while others will know it only by its original title. The most helpful response is therefore to provide both titles wherever possible, following the examples at WP:NCFF.
My remarks are prompted by recent changes in the article on Charles Spaak, to which we have both contributed. That filmography now has mixture of titles in English and in French, instead of the previous list of the French ones which was admittedly deficient but it was consistent. When such articles need to be edited, I think the best solution is to add a missing title rather than to substitute it for one already there, thereby preserving rather than deleting potentially useful information. This should assist the maximum number of people to recognise which films are which. That is the practice I would like to follow, and indeed more consistently than I may have done in the past. With best wishes, Lampernist (talk) 16:57, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Films directed by André Haguett

A tag has been placed on Category:Films directed by André Haguett indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 23:00, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of File:False Appearances.jpg

A tag has been placed on File:False Appearances.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused duplicate or lower-quality copy of another file on Wikipedia having the same file format, and all inward links have been updated.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. adding information to Lord Palmerston article anew
@Lord Cornwallis I would love to edit the page for Lord Palmerston as because of a rather new found interest in British history. I have recently edited only contemporary British politics recently and found it to be a bit hard for me to keep up with all the recent developments in the field and so decided as a result to edit more historical pages for the sake of improving my editing and abilities. Therefore, I would like to ask you for sources for that article such as books (biography or otherwise), websites or news stories that concern his premierships. Like there is a complete lack of mention of domestic policy on matters like the economy, substantial reforms and corporate policy. So can you give me a list of such sources to draw information and thereof unto the article? I would appreciate your help immensely on this occasion. ZombieBruce (talk) 10:36, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:The Boathouse Riddle.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:The Boathouse Riddle.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Ирука13 04:58, 20 November 2024 (UTC)

Hello, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Your bold move of Portrait of Benjamin Disraeli has been reverted because an editor has found it to be controversial. Per Wikipedia:Requested moves, a move request must be placed on the article's talk page, and the request be open for discussion for seven days, "if there is any reason to believe a move would be contested". If you believe that this move is appropriate, please initiate such a discussion to form the appropriate consensus. Again, please note that moving a page with a longstanding title and/or a large number of incoming links is more likely to be considered controversial, and may be contested. Note that such consensus is particularly required before moving a title with incoming links in order to create a disambiguation page at that title. jlwoodwa (talk) 00:28, 26 November 2024 (UTC)

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete or generic. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact source (such as the web page, or printed document) where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain, search engine, pinboard, aggregator, or the direct/bare URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you. Wikiacc (¶) 22:48, 29 December 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Totò Mignone

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Totò Mignone requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Replaceable non-free use File:A Chronicle of the Reign of Charles IX.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:A Chronicle of the Reign of Charles IX.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Ирука13 12:05, 24 January 2025 (UTC)

Images of old paintings
Hi Lord Cornwallis. I've noticed you've recently upload a number of files of old paintings like File:Cleopatra and the Peasant.jpeg locally to Wikipedia. You might want to take a look at c:Commons:When to use PD-Art because most of your uploads are probably OK for Commons. Files uploaded locally to English Wikipedia are limited technically to being used only on English Wikipedia, even when they're licensed as public domain; files uploaded to Commons, on the other hand, can be easily used by any of the various language Wikipedias or other WMF projects. So, Commons is better suited to hosting such files since its setup is global and works well with all WMF projects. As long as you're reasonably sure the the paintings are no longer eligible for copyright protection in both the US and their country of first publication, they should be fine for Commons. If you've got any doubts, you can always ask for input at c:COM:VPC.
As for the files you've already uploaded, you can relicense them as {{PD-Art}}
, a local English Wikipedia version of the Commons "PD-Art" template, in combination without another license like {{PD-US-expired-abroad}}
(with the parameter |pdsource=yes
used to indicate the painting is also PD in its source country; for example, {{PD-Art|PD-US-expired-aborad|pdsource=yes}}
.) to tweak their respective licensing to something a little more appropriate while simultaneously tagging the files for a move to Commons. The {{PD-US-expired}}
license you used isn't wrong per se, but the "PD-Art" license contains additional wording to cover any possible copyright concerns about the photo of the painting (these photos almost certainly aren't as old as the painting themselves) and the "PD-US-expired-abroad" makes it clear that the painting was first published outside the US and is also PD in its source country. For reference, such photos, for the most part, are considered to be slavish reproductions (i.e. lacking sufficient creativity to establish a new separate copyright for the photo itself) under US copyright law and by Wikimedia Commons, but the "PD-Art" license just makes that a bit clearer. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:35, 13 February 2025 (UTC)

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Works about the Punic Wars requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
The article The Golden Salamander has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Article has had no evidence of meeting Wikipedia:Notability in its 5.6 years, and has naught but a single source—not about this novel, but the film into which it was adapted. Further, all other claims are unsupported by citations to reliable sources.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
