Wurth Electronics Midcom is a global leader in the design and manufacture of custom magnetics from its headquarters in Watertown, SD.

History

Wurth Electronics Midcom was founded as Midcom Inc. in Watertown, SD in 1972 as a subsidiary to Midtex to manufacture transformers for the telecommunications industry. In 1987, Midcom Inc. was purchased by the ANZA group and grew to 3 additional locations in the rural area throughout the next 8 years. In 2007 Midcom was acquired by the Würth Group based in Künzelsau, Germany. The Würth Group has 65,000 employees and sales of 9.98 billon €.[1]

Wurth Electronics Midcom is the global leader in the design and manufacture of custom magnetics. Wurth Electronics Midcom produces custom transformers and magnetics for power, signal and communications applications.

Additionally, the company produces standard passive components including: ferrites, filter chokes, common mode chokes, varistors, TVS diodes, power inductors, power transformers, RF inductors and LTCC components and EMI shielding materials.

The electromechanical components line of Wurth Electronics Midcom includes Board-to-Board connectors, Wire-to-Board connectors, FPC Connectors & FFC Cables, communication connectors (USB, mod jack, HDMI), terminal blocks, tact, dip, & rotary switches, press-fit connectors, and assembly products (cable holders, heat shrink tubes, cable connectors, mounting tabs).

Würth Elektronik, with consultation by Bernhard Rall and Heinz Zenkner, is also known for writing the design guide, The Trilogy of Mangetics. The Trilogy of Magnetics is a 700+ page design guide for EMI filter Design, SMPS and RF Circuits.

Later, Würth Elektronik released, The Trilogy of Connectors, written with consultation by Dr. Robert S. Mrodzkowski. The Trilogy of Connectors is approximately 300 pages that covers basic principles and connector design explanations.

Most recently, the company partnered with Linear Technology and Gilles Brocard, who wrote The LTspice IV Simulator handbook. This book is filled with manuals, methods and applications for LTspice IV, an SMPS simulation software.

International Offices

The headquarters of Wurth Electronics Midcom is in Watertown, SD, USA, and houses engineering, a research & development lab, a warehouse, inside sales representatives, growth & retention, accounting, marketing & communications, administrative staff and management.

Sales offices around the world accommodate the local inside and outside sales staff and Field Application Engineers. In the U.S., these locations include Rutherford, NJ, Elgin, IL, Plano, TX, and Milpitas, CA. Wurth Electronics Midcom expanded a research & development office in Garching, Germany in 2013.

The Wurth Electronics Midcom facility in Guangdong, China facility is home to the Asian support staff, a prototype production line, and a research & development team. In Chongqing, the staff builds medium- and high-volume products and has developed cost-effective LEAN lines. Most recently, the company opened an additional manufacturing facility in Tongzi, Zunyi, China, which accommodates high-volume production[2] .
