Murali Architects
[edit]Murali Murugan[1][2] is an Indian architect and designer known for his innovative architectural works and design leadership. He is the founder and principal architect of Murali Architects[3][4][5][6][7], a Chennai-based architecture firm recognized for its contextual and sustainable design approach that blends modern architectural practices with traditional Indian sensibilities.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Murali Murugan was born and raised in Tamil Nadu, India. He completed his Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) at the School of Architecture & Planning, Anna University, Chennai in 1981. Pursuing higher education abroad, he obtained his Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) from McGill University, Canada, between 1981 and 1984. His academic exposure in Canada significantly influenced his design thinking, integrating international design principles with Indian cultural and climatic contexts.
Career
[edit]After returning to India in 1984, Murugan worked with several architectural firms in Chennai, gaining early experience in diverse project types. Between 1986 and 1990, he served as a faculty member at Anna University, teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in architecture. In 1990, he founded Murali Architects[8], headquartered in Adyar, Chennai.
Since its inception, Murali Architects has undertaken a wide spectrum of projects including large urban infrastructure works, hospitals, educational institutions, commercial complexes, and residential developments. Murugan has also served as consultant and advisor to major public institutions and corporations such as the Corporation of Chennai[9], Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, and Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation.
Their notable public infrastructure projects[10][11] include the 32-acre Koyambedu Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) in Chennai—executed in collaboration with architect Kuldip Singh and RITES, New Delhi—and the Thirumayilai MRTS Railway Station at Mylapore. These projects remain major urban landmarks demonstrating functional planning and architectural clarity.
Academic and Professional Engagement
[edit]Murali Murugan has contributed significantly to architectural education in Tamil Nadu. He has served as a member of the Board of Studies in Architecture for leading institutions such as the School of Architecture and Planning, Anna University, SRM University, and Sathyabama University.
He has also been a visiting design critic at several schools including Thiagarajar College of Engineering (Madurai), MEASI Academy of Architecture (Chennai), and Sathyabama University.
Beyond teaching, he wrote over 60 architectural articles for The Hindu’s “Property Plus” supplement between 2004 and 2006, discussing architectural trends, urban issues, and design philosophies for a wider audience.
Philosophy and Legacy
[edit]Murali Architects's architectural philosophy emphasizes context, climate responsiveness, and human experience. Their work often incorporates natural materials, daylight, and passive ventilation to enhance spatial quality and sustainability. He is known for merging modern design sensibilities with traditional Indian principles, producing architecture that is both functional and emotionally resonant.
Through his teaching, writings, and professional practice, Murugan continues to inspire a generation of architects in Tamil Nadu and across India. His work demonstrates how design can shape not just structures, but also cultural identity and civic life.
