Picture of the day

Euphaedra themis is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. It is found in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria and western Cameroon. Its wings have a black ground-colour above and are green, blue, orange-yellow or whitish to beyond the middle of the hindwing and at the hindmargin of the forewing. 28 BC – Chinese astronomers during the Han dynasty made the first precisely dated observation of a sunspot.
1775 – American Revolutionary War: A small force of Patriots led by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold captured Fort Ticonderoga (depicted) in New York, without significant injury or incident.
1933 – Thousands of books on the history and healthcare of transgender people, taken from the Institute for Sexual Science, were burned by Nazis in Bebelplatz Square for being "un-German".
1940 – British prime minister Neville Chamberlain resigned and formally recommended Winston Churchill as his successor.
