Laurie Patton is an Australian public interest advocate and a former political advisor, journalist and media executive.[1][2][3] He is a council member at the Australian Republic Movement and is its New South Wales regional convenor.[4][5]
At the height of his corporate career Patton held senior executive positions at the Seven Network.[6][7] He created the World Movies channel, now screened on SBS,[8] and oversaw construction of a community television station for Western Sydney University,[9] subsequently heading up negotiations to secure spectrum for the conversion to digital broadcasting for the community television sector.[10][11]
As an advisor in the NSW government - under premier Neville Wran - Patton spearheaded significant policy reforms, including the decision to save the Terania Creek rainforest - the first of many such moves in response to growing community concerns about the environment.[12][13]
Patton has held non-profit roles, including CEO / Executive Director at Internet Australia, where he launched a campaign for #BetterBroadband as key to a national innovation strategy and the elimination of the ‘digital divide’,[14][15] and decentralisation as a means of providing more affordable housing and more liveable communities.[16][17] He has also campaigned for laws to deal with “keyboard cowards”.[18]
As deputy chair of the NSW Film & Television office, he led the first official delegation of filmmakers to the Shanghai International Film Festival.[19][20][21]
Patton was a member of an expert panel for a review of the Indigenous broadcasting and media sector, which recommended that SBS Television provide a home for the National Indigenous Television channel (NITV).[22]
