Dr. Piyush Raj

[edit]

Dr. Piyush Raj is an Indian Kathak dancer, choreographer, arts entrepreneur, and performer. He has a doctorate in pharmacy and MBA degree in marketing. Dr. Raj transitioned into performing arts and dance after two decades in the medical industry followed by a duration of 10 years in interior and furniture design. He is the founder and director of Natanam Studio for Performing Arts in Mumbai, affiliated with the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and Natavari Kathak Nritya Academy. He is a well-known performer who devotes his life to promoting and reviving Indian classical dance.

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Dr. Piyush Raj holds a bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences from Mumbai University and an MBA in marketing from Prin. L.N. Welingkar Institute of Management. His fervour for dance continued throughout his academic and professional career, eventually resulting in his complete dedication to the performing arts and dance.

Dance Training

[edit]

Dr. Raj is a Nritya Alankar in Kathak. He has received his initial training from Dr. Shveni Pandya, a disciple of Pandit Lacchu Maharaj. He continued his training for over two decades under the Guru-Shishya Parampara from Late Shri Bireshwar Gautam, a noted Kathak exponent and Thumri singer, who was trained under Guru Bandana Sen, Padmashri Pt. Gopi Krishna, and Padmashri Damayanti Joshi.

His signature dance style emphasizes Thehraav (meditative stillness) —and refined storytelling through Bhava and Abhinaya. Motivated by the legacy of his late guru, Dr. Raj is continuing his training in Thaat and Vilambit Khayal.

He is currently pursuing advanced training in Kathak under the guidance of Mahamahopadhyaya Padmashri Dr. Puru Dadheech, with whom he is working to revive ancient traditions such as Kathak Kathan Parampara and explore Aprachalit Taals (rare rhythmic patterns). His interests also extend to incorporate Kathak Prayoga with Shastra. He artistically blends both precision and soul—a very rare combination that is quickly disappearing from modern-day classical dance.

Dr. Raj has also attended various workshops under eminent gurus, including Pt. Birju Maharaj and Guru Pratap Pawar, and has attended body movement workshops by Aditi Mangaldas. He has contributed to multiple ballets that combine Kathak and folk elements and has extensive knowledge of Indian folk dances.
