Rufai Kasim is a Ghanaian-American entrepreneur. He is the founder of CarloVan Group, which operates CarloVan Security, a security technology company based in Ghana, and the CarloVan Foundation, a non-profit organisation that provides solar lighting and other support to communities in Ghana.[1][2]

Kasim has been reported as a steering committee member of the Global Wealth Forum, a platform that focuses on wealth creation and financial literacy, and as an ambassador and investment promoter for a women-in-mining initiative associated with former Mauritian president Ameenah Gurib-Fakim.[3]

Early life and career

[edit]

According to Ghanaian media reports, Kasim was born and raised in Accra, Ghana, and later relocated to the United States to live with his father and siblings.[1] Before entering the security sector, he founded CarloVan Clothing, a streetwear brand that received attention from some celebrities and media personalities and was described as promoting positive messages and connections to Ghana for members of the African diaspora.[1]

Armed robbery and transition to security

[edit]

In interviews with journalists, Kasim has stated that in 2019 he was the victim of an armed robbery in Ghana during a property transaction after being set up by an acquaintance.[4] He has said that the incident left him with physical injuries and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.[1][2]

Kasim has described this experience as the main reason he decided to work in security technology, with the aim of helping households and businesses reduce their exposure to burglary and violent crime.[2][5]

CarloVan Security

[edit]

Kasim is the founder and director of CarloVan Security, a company based in Ghana that designs and installs security systems for residential and commercial clients.[2][6] Media coverage describes the company as using devices such as wireless alarm panels, motion detectors, door and window sensors, closed-circuit television cameras and, in some cases, solar-powered surveillance equipment.[2][5][7]

CarloVan Foundation

[edit]

Kasim later established the CarloVan Foundation, described in local reporting as a philanthropic arm of his work.[1] The foundation focuses on providing solar street lights, educational materials and relief items to communities in Ghana. Projects reported in the media include the donation of solar lighting to schools and neighbourhoods, financial assistance and supplies for people affected by flooding, and the distribution of shoes, toys and chess sets to school children and people in prisons.[1][4][2]

Media coverage

[edit]

Kasim and his activities have been profiled by media outlets including Starr FM, MX24, Kasapa FM, GhanaWeb, The Ghana Report, Afropulp and Economic World, and he has appeared as a guest on Ghanaian television channels such as GHOne TV and GTV.[1][2][3]
