Powercoders

[edit]

Powercoders is a Swiss non-profit organization that provides intensive IT training and job integration programs for refugees and migrants. Founded in 2016, Powercoders aims to address both the shortage of IT professionals in Switzerland and the barriers faced by displaced people in accessing the labor market.[1][2]

History

[edit]

Powercoders was founded in 2016 by Christian and Bettina Hirsig in response to the European refugee crisis. The first bootcamp launched in Bern in early 2017, attracting a large number of applicants, volunteers, and partner companies offering internships. The program quickly expanded to Zurich, Lausanne, and Basel, before consolidating into permanent programs in Zurich and Lausanne. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Powercoders adopted a hybrid model blending remote and on-site learning to serve participants across Switzerland.

Programs

[edit]

Bootcamp

[edit]

The flagship program is the **Powercoders Bootcamp**, a 13- to 14-week intensive, full-time IT training course, followed by a 6–12 month internship at a Swiss IT company. The curriculum includes specialization tracks such as Web Design, Advanced JavaScript, Java, Testing, and DevOps. The bootcamp also incorporates weekly social and business skills training. Selected participants receive support for laptops, transportation, and meals if needed.

The program is designed for refugees and migrants aged 18–55 who face barriers to entering the Swiss IT job market. The majority of seats are reserved for people with refugee status, and the program is fully funded and free of charge for participants.

Women connect and other initiatives

[edit]

Powercoders also runs **Women Connect**, a part-time pilot program focused on social and business skills for women seeking IT jobs in Switzerland.[3] Additional self-learning and digital talent programs are offered in partnership with organizations such as HiCoders and Kiron Open University.[4]

Admission and selection process

[edit]

Applicants complete an online application, followed by an interview and IT test. Promising candidates are invited to participate in testing weeks, after which the final selection is made. The selection emphasizes motivation, learning ability, teamwork, and passion for IT.

Internship and job integration

[edit]

After the bootcamp, participants attend a "Career Day" where Swiss companies present internship opportunities. Most participants who complete the program secure an internship, and over 90% have historically transitioned to internships or jobs. Each participant is paired with a volunteer job coach during their internship.[5]

Impact

[edit]

Powercoders has trained hundreds of refugees and migrants, many of whom have gone on to secure employment in the Swiss IT sector.[6] The organization addresses the growing shortage of ICT specialists in Switzerland, which is projected to reach nearly 40,000 unfilled positions.[6][7]

Funding and support

[edit]

The program is financed through donations from companies, government support, and volunteer contributions. In return, participants are encouraged to give back 100 hours of their time to support others in the community.[8]

Recognition

[edit]

Powercoders has received recognition from Swiss media, government agencies, and international organizations for its innovative approach to workforce integration.[9] The program has been featured in national newspapers and has participated in social entrepreneurship competitions.[10]
