East Asian eras

[edit]

@Smasongarrison: please could you tweak Template:Occupation by nationality and century category header/era, or whatever else may be needed, so that prople from 2nd century BC to 5th century go into "from Imperial China" rather than "Ancient Chinese"?

E.g. 2nd to 5th centuries AD no longer belong in Category:Ancient Chinese astronomers or Category:Ancient Chinese physicians.

For consensus supporting this, please see Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2025_February_24#More_medieval_Chinese_categories. – Fayenatic London 22:24, 8 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'll see what I can do. SMasonGarrison 23:59, 8 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok so the tricky thing is that there are nationality specific eras, but there is also a general switch statement for Medieval and Ancient categorization. SMasonGarrison 00:08, 9 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, so what I have right now should behave for China. It's hard to tell because @Marcocapelle seems to have removed the templates from a lot of places. I'm happy to modify. SMasonGarrison 00:37, 9 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Non-diffusing

[edit]

@Smasongarrison: please can you make the non-diffusing part of this template conditional on the subcats existing? See e.g. 2 redlinks currently at Category:20th-century American mathematicians. – Fayenatic London 21:41, 9 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It's not an easy fix. Right now each combination needs to be spelled out. Template:Occupation_by_nationality_and_century_category_header/diffusingchildren I'll start thinking about ways to refactor the code to make it easier to modify. SMasonGarrison 21:56, 9 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have a rough working version Template:Occupation by nationality and century category header/diffusingchildren/sandbox. It needs some more testing before it goes to prime time though. SMasonGarrison 21:33, 10 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's not behaving quite right with Template:Non-diffusing parent category SMasonGarrison 21:48, 10 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Fayenatic london So I've rolled it out, and I think it's working. I suspect that there will be edge cases, but I can fix those as they come up. SMasonGarrison 01:07, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Like it's not showing up for Category:19th-century American businesspeople, but it is for Category:20th-century_American_businesspeople Hmmmm SMasonGarrison 01:09, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Looks OK now to me – maybe it just needed time to propagate fully. – Fayenatic London 13:27, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I had to hide a redirect. It's definitely not ideal but this works for every other occupation that's non-diffusing like this. SMasonGarrison 00:05, 4 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
