Template misuse

[edit]

The list of people and organizations is non-neutral and biased. The inclusion of this "Autism rights movement" section in this article on Amanda Baggs is biased, apparently intended to promote the views and philosophy of the "Autism rights movement." This section reads like an advertisement and promotional, and as such is not appropriate for wikipedia.--Appto (talk) 06:49, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Then deal with the article; you don't put a tag on a template when your issue is with an article. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 06:56, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Autism Speaks

[edit]

Autism Speaks is an autism awareness organisation, but it is not an autism rights organisation. Therefor I don't think it belongs on the list of autism rights organisations. --Wikiman2718 (talk) 17:36, 16 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

For example, over the past year or so Devon Price has emerged as a major thought leader in the autism rights movement due primarily to his book Unmasking Autism: Discovering the New Faces of Neurodiversity. Is it appropriate to add a link to this template? —siroχo 10:12, 15 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As I already addressed here, in my opinion, this would require an independent, third-party source.--TempusTacet (talk) 12:41, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll not add a link to the article unless such a source is found. —siroχo 08:54, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Siroxo, I've re-considered my position and added Devon Price to the template. I still don't see the sources supporting him to be an autism rights advocate but I believe that through his writing he is a notable voice in the discussion around & promotion of the Neurodiversity paradigm, which is the current title of the template.--TempusTacet (talk) 12:51, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense! Thanks —siroχo 05:29, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Simon Baron-Cohen

[edit]

While Simon Baron-Cohen is undoubtedly a major figure in autism research, it seems questionable to include his bio on this autism rights template. I'd argue (reserving judgement) that Baron-Cohen's contributions to the field have been "rights-agnostic". He's proposed ideas that have indirectly both set back (eg. extreme male brain, mind-blindness) and helped the autism rights' movement (eg. double-empathy), without any demonstrated intent in either direction.

I propose removing Baron-Cohen's bio from this template, I'll plan to do so after waiting at least a few weeks for comment. —siroχo 10:23, 15 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I support the proposal. He seems to have significantly changed his views over the course of his career and has generally been sympathetic to the autism rights movement in recent years, but he's never claimed to be an autism rights advocate nor has (to my knowledge) anyone else claimed that he is.--TempusTacet (talk) 12:24, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for making the update! —siroχo 16:46, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Support. I have yet to see Baron-Cohen claiming to be an autism rights advocate, nor have I heard anyone claiming him to be one. Cflam01 (talk) 13:55, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Move template?

[edit]

I.e. directly to "Neurodiversity paradigm" or simply: "Neurodiversity"... if not "Autism as Neurodiversity"? Biohistorian15 (talk) 11:58, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Temple Grandin

[edit]

Should TG be added to this template? WLU 14:06, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is currently being discussed at Talk:Temple_Grandin#Removal_of_questionable_claims_regarding_autistic_rights_and_neurodiversity_movements. --Guy Macon Alternate Account (talk) 09:59, 12 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Circling back on our earlier discussion that mostly took place on the Template Grandin article's talk page (thanks for linking that above, BTW), did we reach what would be considered consensus for removing her from this template? As we discussed, Grandin has never explicitly labeled herself a member of the autistic rights or neurodiversity movements, and there's a paucity of reliable sources that make that explicit assertion. DoItFastDoItUrgent (talk) 22:50, 15 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the entry. --Guy Macon (talk) 19:39, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed removal of Stephen Shore from template

[edit]

I hereby propose removing Stephen Shore from this template. I haven't been able to find any reliable source that explicitly labels Shore a part of either the autistic rights or neurodiversity movements and, similar to Temple Grandin (see discussion thread above), he's never labeled himself an adherent of either movement.

Further, based on the sources I've come across while recently updating his article, he seems, if anything, to be opposed to the core tenets of both movements and firmly in support of the medical model of disability. He's even described the onset of autistic traits in toddlerhood as an "autism bomb" going off that "spreads its shrapnel from the child to the family, to education, the community, and humanity at large." He's also served on the boards of various organizations that have historically opposed said movements (e.g., Autism Speaks).

This template is not a general list of openly autistic public figures; it is (in part) a list of people and organizations in favor of or opposed to the autistic rights and neurodiversity movements. We, here at Wikipedia, need to stop making the blanket assumption that any and all autistic public figures are adherents of the autistic rights and neurodiversity movements. Like all topics, reliable sources are key. In this case, I don't believe there are any reliable sources that explicitly categorize Shore as a member of the autistic rights or neurodiversity movements. DoItFastDoItUrgent (talk) 23:29, 15 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Since no one's raised any immediate objections, I've removed Shore from the template for the reasons stated above. It appears he was initially added without any stated justification by an IP editor back in 2016. If anyone's late to the party and objects to his deletion, I strongly suggest outlining your objections here and providing reliable sources justifying his inclusion.
