- What I think should be changed (include citations):
I am Anne Charnock, the subject of this biography, and I have a conflict of interest. I am requesting that independent editors make the following factual corrections, with reliable sources provided. Many thanks in advance if you are able to help.
1) Fix incorrect description of A Calculated Life
Current paragraph: “Charnock's first novel, A Calculated Life, was originally self-published in 2013, and was later picked up by 47 North, an imprint of Amazon. The story follows migrant workers attempting to make a living in the UK, and was published a quartet of short stories published by NewCon along with stories by Neil Williamson, Simon Morden and Alastair Reynolds. It was nominated for the 2013 Philip K. Dick Award.”
Change requested: Replace second and third sentences:
“A Calculated Life is set in a dystopian near-future Britain shaped by advances in genetic engineering and corporate power; its protagonist is a ‘simulant’ (part human, part AI) leased to a corporation to generate economic predictions. It was nominated for the 2013 Philip K. Dick Award. Charnock’s novella The Enclave, set in the same world, follows migrant workers attempting to make a living in the UK, and it was published in a quartet of novellas by NewCon Press alongside works by Neil Williamson, Simon Morden and Alastair Reynolds.”
Sources:
• https://sf-encyclopedia.com/entry/charnock_anne (describes the “Calculated Life sequence”, near-future Britain, genetic engineering, simulant protagonist leased to a corporation)
• (Retain existing source [3] for the NewCon quartet.
• (Retain existing source [4] for Philip K. Dick Award nomination.
2) Improve accuracy of Sleeping Embers of an Ordinary Mind description
Current text:
“Charnock is also the author of Sleeping Embers of an Ordinary Mind (47 North), published in 2015, the story of an Italian female artist in the 15th century.”
Change requested: Replace with:
“Charnock is also the author of Sleeping Embers of an Ordinary Mind (47 North), published in 2015, a novel that braids together past, present and future, with a 15th-century Italian female artist at its centre.”
Source:
• https://www.theguardian.com/books/2015/dec/03/best-science-fiction-and-fantasy-books-of-2015 (contains this characterization)
3) Update judging roles
Current text:
“Charnock was a judge during the 2018 James White Award short story competition.”
Change requested: Change to: “Charnock was a judge during the 2018 James White Award short story competition, and served as a judge for the Kitschies Awards in 2024.”
Source: • https://locusmag.com/2024/11/2024-and-final-kitschies-winners/ (lists the judges)
4) Bibliography: add missing novel
Change requested: Add to bibliography/works list:
Bridge 108 (2020)
Source: • https://www.publishersweekly.com/9781542006071
- Why it should be changed:
Requested change #1 Reason: The current sentence describes The Enclave, but it is placed as the description of A Calculated Life.
Requested change #2 Reason: The current wording describes only one strand of the novel.
Requested change #3 Reason: The Kitschies judging role is not currently included.
Requested change #4 Reason: Novel missing from the bibliography.
