Wanting to shorten Bassfield, Bowling Green, and Dresden

Hey after this next outbreak, I'm planning on maybe shortening or simplifying the summaries for the 2020 Bassfield, MS tornado, and the 2021 Bowling Green, KY and Dresden, TN tornadoes as well. Bassfield shouldn't be all that hard to simplify. However, the Bowling Green and Dresden summaries are extremely long, and they are going to be more of a challenge to condense. I guess what I want to know is, is it more of a size and length thing that should be reduced, or more about simplifying, taking out repetitive "fluff", and making it easier to read, even if it doesn't cut down on length all that much? Doing both may be especially hard for an extremely long tracked tornado like Dresden.

Now the other option is that I just leave it alone and let other users make that call, and leave it to them to remove what they feel can be taken out. Either or works for me. TornadoInformation12 (talk) 10:37, 3 April 2023 (UTC)TornadoInformation12[reply]

@TornadoInformation12: It's more of a repetition and excess detail issue, the length will be what it will be. One of the main things is the amount of times trees are mentioned. However, we can't arbitrarily constrain the length if all the information being conveyed is essential. After thinking it over for a few days I think I understand where I came off a bit wrong with my intent to reduce the size of the tornado summaries. OK sounds good. Yeah when it comes to really long-tracked events like the ones I mentioned, controlling length will be a challenge. But I don't have to go into detail about every road they cross, or every single business or wooded area they impact. So yeah just show me what you have in mind and we'll go from there.

@TornadoInformation12: I'll be workshopping a rewrite of the Bowling Green EF3 here: User:Cyclonebiskit/BG. I'll leave notes throughout the original one to highlight my thought processes on how/why I've condensed things. Then we can bounce around if I've removed too much or if there's additional information that you believe is worth including. I've also gone ahead and condensed the second Bowling Green tornado, it really didn't have much notability aside from hitting Bowling Green alongside the EF3. ~ Cyclonebiskit (chat)
Hey sorry things got unexpectedly busy, but still down to work on this with you. So the first thing I notice is there's too much repetitive tree damage information throughout the whole summary, so we can cut most of that out. Now is the stuff highlighted in red info that you want to do away with completely, or just condense? The reason I ask is there's some stuff in there that's important, mainly the explanation of slabbed duplex that looked like EF4 damage, but was rated EF2 because it was struck by heavy debris. That was a big source of controversy and some people will still want to know the rationale behind that. But there's multiple other highlighted parts that can be cut out too.

Article: List of fatal tornadoes?

You mentioned somewhere that you were toying with the idea of creating an article with a list of fatal tornadoes. I toyed with the idea myself and started some research a while ago (death tolls > 10 and "US/Canada-centric") so maybe it would be helpful? While I didn't list a pile of references, I recall that everything came from a mish-mash of established Wiki articles or Storm Data reports, NWS office websites, or Grazulis. There were discrepancies among those three sources, so I'd probably go back and just grab whatever is on the Wiki articles first (NCEI database? Storm Data reports?) then grab additional info from wherever the established standards dictate. Let me know. ~David

WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

Sourcing and notability on lists of Pokémon by generation (e.g., List of generation I Pokémon)

The lists of Pokémon by generation articles contain a large volume of information in the 'notes' column which appears to not be sourced and/or below the threshold for notability due to being detailed in-universe information.

I have opened a discussion in the teahouse before making any changes to avoid edit wars and agree on the appropriate actions for these articles. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Teahouse#Notes_in_the_lists_of_Pok%C3%A9mon_by_generation_(e.g.,_List_of_generation_I_Pok%C3%A9mon) [which will likely be included in archive 1198 if this link is no longer active].

@Shazback:, I believe Blacephalon is the more relevant person to contact for this. I largely focused on restructuring the lists into a more coherent system in 2016 and most of the prose I added is connected to references. Re: 1964 outbreak

@Cyclonebiskit, United States Man, and TornadoLGS: I see that your draft relies on Thomas P. Grazulis to adjust some official ratings. However, is this acceptable on Wikipedia? If I recall correctly, users here are advised to rely on official sources for ratings. To my knowledge the Significant Tornadoes volumes are not official sources, except perhaps for pre-1950 tornadoes whose ratings are semi-official. I am working on a draft of my own and would appreciate some clarification on this matter. CapeVerdeWave (talk) 15:38, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@CapeVerdeWave: Given his expertise in the field and that NWS offices have used him as a reference (can't remember the event pages I've seen this on off the top of my head) I think it's fair to use his ratings. It's well-known that the NCEI database is riddled with errors and we're not forced to adhere to a single source if reliable sources have differing information. WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. The WikiCup is a marathon rather than a sprint and all those reaching the final round have been involved in the competition for the last ten months, improving Wikipedia vastly during the process. After all this hard work, Delaware BeanieFan11 has emerged as the 2023 winner and the WikiCup Champion. The finalists this year were:-

1963 North Indian Ocean cyclone season

I am attempting to make track maps for the 1963 North Indian Ocean cyclone season and am halfway done. I am using official IBTrACS data, however I am not using the official track map generator that Wikipedia offers. Is this okay for tropical cyclones? I have noticed that you have made many tropical cyclone track maps using official data and am curious about how to approach this matter as I am not a very experienced track map maker yet. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

WikiCup 2024 May newsletter

The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.

So far this year, competitors have gotten 18 featured articles, 22 featured lists, and 186 good articles, 76 in the news credits and at least 200 did you know credits. They have conducted 165 featured article reviews, as well as 399 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 21 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed during Round 3, which starts on 1 May at 00:00 (UTC). WikiCup 2024 July newsletter

The third round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 June. As with Round 2, this round was competitive: each of the 16 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 256 points.

The following editors all scored more than 400 points in Round 3:

So far this year, competitors have gotten 28 featured articles, 38 featured lists, 240 good articles, 92 in the news credits, and at least 285 did you know credits. They have conducted 279 featured article reviews, as well as 492 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 22 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 June but before the start of Round 4 can be claimed during Round 4, which starts on 1 July at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. WikiCup 2024 August newsletter

The fourth round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 29 August. Each of the 8 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 472 points, and the following contestants scored more than 700 points:

Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated. Contestants put in extraordinary amounts of effort during this round, and their scores can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 36 featured articles, 55 featured lists, 15 good articles, 93 in the news credits, and at least 333 did you know credits. They have conducted 357 featured content reviews, as well as 553 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 30 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Any content promoted after 29 August but before the start of Round 5 can be claimed during Round 5, which starts on 1 September at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. If two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. WikiCup 2025 March newsletter

The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.

Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:

During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.

To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received.
