ZetaChain is a public, open-source Layer-1 blockchain built with the Cosmos SDK that aims to let applications interact with assets and smart contracts across heterogeneous blockchains, including non–smart-contract networks such as Bitcoin. Independent coverage has highlighted its design goal of enabling cross-chain applications via an EVM-compatible execution layer.[1][2]
History
[edit]ZetaChain announced mainnet in January 2024 following a public testnet. Coverage at launch discussed its cross-chain design and planned Bitcoin-related functionality.[3][1]
Technology
[edit]ZetaChain’s consensus uses a CometBFT-style PBFT mechanism with proof-of-stake validators. According to the project whitepaper, validators run components that observe external chains and co-sign outbound transactions using a leaderless threshold signature scheme; contracts on ZetaChain’s EVM can be invoked from or dispatch transactions to external chains, with foreign assets represented on ZetaChain as ZRC-20 tokens.[4] Independent overviews describe this approach as hub-and-spoke cross-chain composition.[2][5]
Security and audits
[edit]Independent security firms have published assessments of ZetaChain components and integrations, including:
- Trail of Bits (security assessment, 2024).[6]
- Zellic (audits in 2023).[7]
- Halborn (smart-contract and Cosmos components, 2023).[8]
- Sherlock (public audit contest, 2025).[9]
Adoption and ecosystem
[edit]Third-party analytics have reported network activity; for example, DappRadar’s chain overview lists monthly users over a 30-day window (methodology may vary).[10] External integrations and validator participation have also been announced by independent organizations, including Coinbase’s developer platform and Animoca Brands.[11][12] Reporting in general-interest and crypto media has covered use cases and ecosystem development.[1][13]
